Philip over at Furious Seasons has a great interview with author Tom Wootton about his two books, The Depression Advantage (2007) and The Bipolar Advantage (2005). These are two self-help books that use “accelerated learning techniques [the author] developed as a corporate consultant to Fortune 500 companies” (according to the Amazon blurb). The Amazon reviews are worth the read, as some readers have some reservations about the author.
It’s an interesting interview and the author makes a very important point that we often see lost in the conversation about coping with long-term depression or bipolar disorder. You can learn important lessons from dealing with adversity, which includes any adversity in our lives. I’m not sure I buy into the idea that having a serious...

Summer school has began, July 2nd 2007. The program is six weeks long. Historically it has been all special education students and staff in one - and now two buildings, as our numbers have grown over the years
I've always maintained that the summer school program is a very positive experience. I believe this to be true for several reasons. The staff and students are all from special education classes in the district thus there are overlaps with prior shared experiences. The first days are actually somewhat of a reunion and very exciting. In past years there have been field trips to parks, movies and restaurants. These are especially meaningful for students who do not have these experiences as a daily part of their family lives. There have been programs that come into the building suc...

‘Desperate Housewives’ star Marcia Cross went to Capitol Hill last week, lobbying Congress to pass the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2007 to end “drive-through” mastectomies for women forced to leave the hospital hours after surgery.

Marcia Cross is campaigning to give women the choice to recuperate for at least 48 hours following a mastectomy and was joined by Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Lifetime network executive Meredith Wagner.
Lifetime has collected more than 20 million signatures for the petition on its Web site, according to the network.

Well, you've probably already seen the news on the ADA's website, and while this is the first indication that all of the efforts of patients, their doctors and CDE's have yielded actual proof that their efforts have paid off. But naturally, a slight majority (60%) isn't good enough.Dr. Earl S. Ford, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta said "As welcome as the recent favorable trends in glycemic control are, additional efforts are needed to help the approximately 40% of patients with diabetes who do not have adequate glycemic control."But I think its very unrealistic to assume it will get much better than this -- honestly. First of all, the struggle to achieve this was monumental, with tools that could best be described as prehistoric at best. Think about how crude the...

In my 2007 Wrap-Up and Outlook for 2008, I had noted some progress made towards curing type 1 diabetes. Specifically, I noted the work being undertaken by New Zealand-based Living Cell Technologies, Ltd. (LCT), as that company is now undertaking human clinical trials in Russia. I hadn't mentioned another company, this one based in San Diego, California named MicroIslet, Inc., a biotechnology company engaged in the development and commercialization of transplantation therapies for diabetes. I chose not to report on MicroIslet's innovations not because of lack of progress, but because MicroIslet is not as far along in trials of their product as LCT is with theirs. Perhaps did a disservice in not reporting it, therefore, I am reporting on their 2007 progress today.MicroIslet's innovation invo...

Hmmmm, another year begins! Although other bloggers beat me to it this year, this year, I will continue a tradition I first began in 2005: my annual wrap-up and outlook for the upcoming year as far as diabetes is concerned. (By the way, please feel free to look back at my 2005 summary or my 2006 summary, as you'll note most of my observations are accurate even today!)Time to Think Beyond Glycemic ControlSince the DCCT was published, the burden for secondary complications has shifted from away the disease itself to the person who has diabetes, despite the fact that no study (not even the DCCT) has ever been able to show that diabetes management alone can completely prevent complications, rather it only reduces the likelihood. Compare that to virtually any other disease, where the disease is...

Mother Goose“What Are Little Boys Made Of?” is a popular nursery rhyme dating from the early nineteenth century:[Mother Goose].What are little boys made of, made of?What are little boys made of?Snips and snails, and puppy-dogs’ tails,That’s what little boys are made of.What are little girls made of, made of?What are little girls made of?Sugar and spice, and everything nice,That’s what little girls are made of.~"Had A.D.H.D finally been shown to be a rather trivial disorder, of a type with the waywardness of natural boyhood, better left untreated, best handled through maturation, unconditional love and chemical-free good living?"-- Judith Warner.~Another version:"What are little boys made of?Hammers and nails, and puppy dog tails,That's what little boys are made of.What are little...

With the Iowa Caucuses a mere few days away, and the New Hampshire primaries to follow shortly thereafter, I thought it might be interesting to see what the U.S. pharmaceutical industry thinks about the 2008 election. The real question is whether it even matters? I cannot answer that question today, but I can provide some perspective on what the American drug industry is thinking. The pharmaceutical and health-products industry has spent more on lobbying Washington –- $1.1 billion -– since 1998 than any other industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which analyzes lobbying disclosure reports. Critics of the pharmaceutical industry argue that heavy spending on lobbyists and campaign contributions is a big reason drug companies have gotten much of what they've sought in ...

I think everyone will agree with me when I say that the year 2007 has been a year of blog events for the Philippine blogosphere. Being a blogging newbie that I was, this has also been the year when I started going to offline blog events and meeting other bloggers in the flesh. In a sense, my blogging world expanded and I realized that there’s more to blogging than just being able to write my thoughts online (and yeah, of course, there’s blog traffic rush too).
And since bloggers being humans really, we tend to form our little communities, both online and offline. With formation of such communities, it is expected that there will be some skirmishes here and there, some bouts of misunderstanding, and a little argument everytime somebody talks about a debatable issue. It could be ...

As many people do at this time of the year, we’ll be taking a few days off from blogging much here during the next week. We’ll post a few items, but not the usual levels of posting you might expect from World of Psychology. I’ll be traveling and visiting with family this week, so that means a great deal less time spent online in general.
One of the things we will be posting this week is a new feature, our year in review here at Psych Central. I’ll take this opportunity to write about some of the highlights for us in the past year here on the website, and discuss some of our plans for 2008. We already posted our Mental Health Year in Review: 2007, which has been one of more popular entries this past week. We hope to continue these features in years to come.

I didn't expect to post anything before next week, but again, my scan of today's news made that impossible!Back in November, I posted a story about how patientprivacyrights.org started a new campaign to call attention to the fact that your prescription drug buying history -- including your name, address, date of birth and drug regimen is FOR SALE. Each day virtually all of the 51,000 pharmacies in the U.S. download, transmit and sell personally identifiable information for every drug they disburse. The primary recipients include companies such as IMS Health of Norwalk, Conn., Wolters Kluwer Health of Conshohocken, Pa., and Verispan of Yardley, Pa., all of whom collect, analyze and sell medical data to drug companies, government agencies and researchers, often at very high prices.Patientpri...

7 Common Medical Myths Debunked

We’re not real sure why people love to believe simplistic things about their health and the human body. Perhaps we like to believe simple folklore because, even if not true, it feels like a common, shared bond that “everybody knows” and so we can repeat with others knowing they’ll agree.
Leave it to the British Medical Journal and authors Rachel Vreeman and Aaron Carroll (2007) to spoil our holidays by debunking seven of the most commonly repeated medical myths about our bodies and living today. According to their review of the medical literature, each one of these tidbits of common wisdom are false:

People should drink at least eight glasses of water a day

We use only 10% of our brains

Hair and fingernails continue to grow after death

	Shaving hair causes ...

Well, as some of my readers may have noticed, I hadn't posted anything this week, which is unusual unless I'm traveling. I was going to cop-out today and post a holiday meme or something, but in my scan of this morning's news, I learned that legislation I wrote about in November actually passed in Congress yesterday. I was expecting that like many other bills pending, this one would be delayed until 2008 since Congress hasn't accomplished a tremendous amount in recent months, and much of what they did accomplish only passed because of tremendous lobbying (by both professional lobbyists and citizen advocacy groups). The legislation I'm referring to would require scientists getting grant money from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to submit to the NIH a final copy of their research pap...

We present to you our highlights that we identified as some of the biggest stories in 2007 in mental health. Sorry it’s such a long post, but it was a busy year!
	Highlights from Research
	STEP-BD
A large, randomized, placebo-controlled study from the STEP-BD folks was published in April in the New England Journal of Medicine by Sachs et al. (2007). It found that in people with bipolar disorder, adding an antidepressant to a mood stabilizer doesn’t help to relieve depressive symptoms. It also doesn’t make things worse (e.g., there is no increased likelihood of a manic or hypomanic episode on an antidepressant). However, another study by Goldberg et. al. (2007) found that antidepressants were associated with significantly higher mania symptom severity at a 3 month follow-...

The U.S. healthcare insurance industry has a variety of issues impacting both cost and availability. One issue that is seldom mentioned is that although interstate commerce in goods and services is fairly routine in most other areas of the national economy (including banking and financial services, since the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, anyway), the insurance industry, and more specifically the healthcare sector is governed by a confusing patchwork of various state laws and inconsistent government regulations, all of which impacts costs and availability. This means that individuals and families are unable to secure the kind of coverage they want at the prices they wish to pay, and companies struggle with how to offer coverage that addresses the mandates ...

There is growing evidence that so-called "disease management" programs do not prove their worth, at least in terms of saving money. According to a study issued by the RAND Corporation, such programs appear to improve the quality of health care, but there is little evidence that such efforts actually save money. The RAND study is not the first to raise this question. A 2004 report from Congressional Budget Office raised its own concerns, saying that there was "insufficient evidence" that disease management programs can reduce overall health spending, or generate savings for federal health programs such as Medicare. Diabetes is perhaps the condition most often targeted by such disease management programs because it is relatively easy to do a glycosated hemoglobin (better known as the hemoglo...

This last week I dumped the account, sent an email requesting to cancel, due to making $28.00 bucks, it wasn't worth the space on my blog. Then I read This at Furious Seasons, and I want answers.I find it to be in the category of fraud, scam, bullshit and other. No one can prevent a person from clicking on the Ads. The policy is that we cannot tell others to do so, and cannot click our own ads.BECAUSE people cannot control who clicks the ad or how many times, I wonder just WHY Google doesn't pay, and cancel accounts that show a pay out, such as Furious Seasons apparently earning $600.00---and Google shuts down the account. This appears illegal to me, and I'm just a mother.I expect my $...

The Business of Diabetes: Lilly Presents An Otimistic 2008 Forecast; Wall Street Less Certain

Yesterday at an investor conference, Eli Lilly and Company (the maker of the insulin analog Humalog, antidepressant Cymbalta, erectile dysfunction treatment Cialis and co-marketer of the type 2 diabetes drug Byetta) executives projected 2008 earnings per share between $3.85 and $4 on sales growth in the mid-to-high single digits.According to analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial as well as Reuters' estimates, that forecast translates to growth of 8% to 14% over the expected 2007 full-year earnings, which exceeds analysts' 2008 profit forecast of $3.81 a share.Recently, the company has tried its best to put a positive spin on the results for its anti blood clotting drug prasugrel, which, assuming it receives FDA approval, will compete with the blockbuster Plavix, which is jointly marketed ...

Contrary to the impression that I give with my blog, I do have a full life outside of diabetes, its just that has never been the focus of my blog postings. After all, I don't think people read here for details on how I spent my weekend (at least I hope not)! But every once and a while, I have some personal detail that is worth sharing. On Tuesday night, I had the opportunity to meet Arthur Frommer, whose name is synonymous with travel since he first published his groundbreaking book "Europe on $5 a Day" back in the 1950's. He was giving a presentation to NYU alumni, although it was open to anyone who wanted to attend. Mr. Frommer has been hailed as "the dean of budget travel", and unlike the authors of some other travel book series, he actually stays at the lodgings that are recommended in ...

First, people with diabetes are regularly told that they should try to manage their consumption of carbohydrates, particularly highly-refined carbs like sugar, refined white flour, potatoes, rice and other foods that cause a rapid rise in blood glucose levels. The reasons differ, depending on what type of diabetes a person has. In the case of type 1, the non-physiological manner in which insulin is administered means that insulin is delayed in getting into the bloodstream and therefore cannot adequately match the body's needs. Although insulin analogs are supposed to better address this issue, they are not without their flaws. People with type 2 who use supplemental insulins have similar issues to people with type 1. They, along with those on other treatments also try to manage their carb ...

In the past around this time of year, I had people vote for the "Dumbest Diabetes Research of the Year". I will not be doing that in 2007, in part, because I did not do much as far as tracking the mindless studies done in the name of diabetes research this year. I must apologize if anyone was hoping to vote, but I would have to spend a lot of time sifting through medical journals, and at this time of year, that really isn't my priority right now. But I'd love to collect your nominations! As you may recall, last year, the winning study was an article entitled "Short legs related to excess weight and diabetes" in which researchers from Johns Hopkins University conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 7,424 adults aged 40–74 years, from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Surv...

For those of you who read Diabetes Health, you may have caught a recent write-up that indicated a commentary article published in the September 29, 2007 edition of The Lancet entitled "Patient-important outcomes in diabetes—time for consensus" in which the authors, largely from the Mayo Clinic, report that a majority of diabetes clinical trials in the U.S. ignore virtually everything except glycemic control. In the article, the authors wrote:"Unfortunately, HbA1c loses its validity as a surrogate marker when patients have a constellation of metabolic abnormalities, when the most common complications are macrovascular, and when the treatments have multiple poorly understood effects."Obviously, that was a not-so-subtle reference recent issues with the GlaxoSmithKline drug Avandia.
This morning's Wall Street Journal featured an interesting opinion piece written by Sidney Taurel, who is the chairman and CEO of Eli Lilly and Company. See below for details. My previous letter written to him can be seen here. In his commentary, Mr. Taurel argues that a lot of pharma reporting in the media is misinformation, or perhaps what could best be called sensationalism. While I agree with that general assessment, Mr. Taurel may find the reasons for my agreement a bit more disturbing.First, lets look at the big picture. Since 1997, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) loosened the restrictions on what is called direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, drug companies have spent billions of dollars advertising their drugs to a general audience. Amy Tenderich recently wrote "direct...

I suppose a brief comment on our recent Australian election is in order, although I prefer not to litter the blog with personal politics. The collage at left, culled from the weekend newspapers, summarises it for me.
It is quite uplifting when after a long, stale and conformist period in history the populace turns around en masse and says “enough, time for change”.
The Labor Party talked the talk during their campaign on science issues: higher education, IT infrastructure, skills shortages, maths/science degrees, technology development and action on climate change. Let’s just hope they deliver on some of those policies. (Source: What You're Doing Is Rather Desperate)

This weekend, the media in Indiana reported that Indiana State Police were investigating a theft involving two truckloads of stolen insulin, undoubtedly from manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company, which manufactures most of the insulin sold in the U.S. in the company's Indiana facilities (although the company also has a substantial manufacturing operation in Puerto Rico, mostly for the insulin analog Humalog).Reports indicated that the stolen trucks contained health and beauty aids and 21 skids of insulin stored in the refrigerated trailers, which were stolen from a Plainfield, IN trucking company between 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and 10:45 a.m. Thursday.Indiana State Troopers continued Friday to try to determine how and why the trailers were stolen. An increase in truck traffic has occurred in th...

It was not approved for that age bracket until 2007.The harm to innocent people vs. Pharmaceutical billion dollar industry has GOT to be scrutinized, one company, and one psychiatric medication at a time.Time is of the essence for a wake up call for American Citizens regarding the dangers of these medications before more innocent children such as 4 year old Rebecca Riley die from being medicated on drugs such as Abilify, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel and more. For further reading on the most recent news regarding suppressing of data, scientific misconduct and unethical marketing of Risperdal go to these blogs: for current media coverage online.Furious Seasons.Clinical Psychology and Pyschiatry.World of Psychology-Psych Central.Seattlest....

I know that Chrissie tagged me for the seven meme, and maybe Gina, too (then again, it may have been Scott Johnson, but either way, I'm doomed)! Whenever I think of seven ... I always think of the Morgan Freeman/Brad Pitt movie with all the creepy depictions of the seven deadly sins being carried out in the form of various ways to murder people. I suppose I could look on the brighter side, and assume it means I'm like Schoolhouse Rock's Lucky Seven Sampson, but lets not get into that right now.Although I'm not crazy about these meme things, which in the snail-mail world would be called a chain letter, I'll comply simply because this week is likely to be a quiet one for me as far as postings. Tomorrow, I'm going to my parents' place in the leafy exurbs in Connecticut for the U.S. Thanksgivi...

Every once and a while, I conclude that I cannot improve upon someone else's work, and so it is the case with patientprivacyrights.org's new campaign to highlight that your prescription drug buying history -- including name, address, date of birth and drug regimen is FOR SALE. In fact, each day all 51,000 pharmacies in the U.S. download, transmit and sell personally identifiable information for every drug they disburse. Even if you pay cash. One of the biggest data miners to profit from this data is IMS Health, a company who compiles prescription sales data for Wall Street analysts (or anyone else who wants to buy it) and sells it for outrageous sums of money, even though you never agreed to be included! The main purchasers of this data are insurance companies and underwriters, pharmaceutic...

Since 1923, Eli Lilly and Company's strategy for type 1 diabetes has been fixated on insulin replacement, and more recently, pushing the idea of intensified insulin therapy. Although Lilly's Humalog was the first insulin analog on the market, over the past decade especially, Lilly took its eyes off the ball and lost its position of dominance in the U.S. type 1 diabetes treatment market to rival Novo Nordisk and more recently, some share to Sanofi Aventis. For the past several years (my first post on this subject was in 2005), I chronicled Lilly's squandering of insulin market share in the U.S., from as much as 85% of the U.S. insulin market back in 1995 to just 43% in 2006 according to data from IMS Health. This year, the company beefed up its salesforce for diabetes products to match Novo ...

Since then, the community has grown substantially, creating an online community of hundreds (maybe even a thousand or more?) of us. World Diabetes Day is "celebrated" on Banting's birthday. I say "celebrate" because in spite of progress, this is really not a day anyone should celebrate (I certainly don't), as its a chronic disease that requires ongoing and expensive maintenence tools. Diabetes sucks, there's no better way of stating the obvious, and treatment has improved slightly, but its arguably the most challenging chronic condition to try and manage, and the new tools frankly haven't made life dramatically easier because we are tasked with trying to rep...

Here are a few words from the old advertisement for Ritalin in 1956:"No appreciable effect on blood pressure, pulse rate or appetite".Note that the people depicted in the advertisement are adults, not children. ~Now take a look at Furious Seasons and this article-FDA To Study Adderall And Concerta For Heart Risks.Unbelievable.~Then take a look at Reports: Researchers Wrong About ADHD Kids' Outcomes, Controversy To Follow- Furious Seasons, and wonder just WHY all of those kids were prescribed Ritalin, etc.--makes me think that 1956 was the start of a pharmaceutical epidemic of sort, and it causes one to wonder how many adults died from high blood pressure/heart complications, who may have taken Ritalin-- ...

As the D-Blogger community already discovered from Vivian's post, our do-nothing Congress has delayed passing legislation (until 2008) which would remove the final impediments for generic insulin, not to mention other (in the words of the FDA) "follow-on" protein products (that bill is known as S. 623/H.R. 1038, the "Access to Life-Saving Medicine Act of 2007").As I have chronicled throughout the year, the reasons for lack of generic insulin are multi-faceted, but the biggest single reason is that manufacturers of generic products, which include such well-regarded manufacturers such as Novartis' Sandoz unit, Israel-based Teva Pharmaceuticals, and U.S.-based Barr Pharmaceuticals among others are lacking guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on how to apply for and obtain appro...

Last week, an article published in The New England Journal of Medicine written by Oregon Health & Science University researchers suggested that Americans may be over-vaccinating ourselves. Specifically, the authors found that antibodies from some vaccines actually stay around in the bloodstream for much longer than previously thought, which means that the current schedules for some vaccinations may be overkill. The study found that protection from conditions such as measles, mumps and rubella following exposure to the diseases were, in most cases, maintained for life. For more background, see The Wall Street Journal health blog posting here."If we can continue to improve our vaccines, someday we might be able to give one shot and give lifelong immunity," said Mr. Slifka, associate professo...

I have been absent as of late, largely because I have been a bit under the weather with bronchitis which has rendered me pretty sick. However, I have remained on top of issues that should be of interest to people in the diabetes community. Most notable were two news stories from this morning's Washington Post. The first story was regarding a debate over whether the results of government-funded NIH research should be made freely available to the public, which had potential to make a big step toward resolution as members of a House and Senate conference committee met to finalize the 2008 Department of Health and Human Services appropriations bill. While it sounds like common sense, believe it or not, today, not all research paid for by U.S. citizens is accessible to them. A two-year-old Nation...

I'm going to do a quick wrap up from Carl's RIP 2007. I was part of the Peril the First in which I agreed to attempt the following: Read four books from any of the genre's discussed on Carl's blog and so I chose... 1. The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics) by H. P. Lovecraft and others (because of the movie my family members are involved with) 2. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (because Jen told me I should) 3. Lisey's Story by Stephen King (because I've never been able to resist his work for long) 4. Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore (yes, lightweight, but I think I'll need it by the time I get here, and hearing Mystical laughing out loud at another of his books just makes me want to dive into something totally irreverent and funny just in time for...

What do you all think of this ad?It's powerful, but don't expect to see it run, as this ad was shelved in favor of a less effective ad that ran for a very short time (see below for that ad).Apparently this was a concept ad that was proposed to the Department of Health and Human Services in an attempt to raise the nation's historically low rate of breast-feeding. A few years ago, federal health officials commissioned an attention-grabbing ad campaign to try and convince mothers that their babies faced genuine health risks if they did not breast-feed. The campaign featured striking photos of not only insulin vials and syringes, but also asthma inhalers topped with rubber nipples (see BrandWeekNRx.com for all of the pictures). But this ad, along with several others, were apparently caught up i...

Today's post is a bit out of character for me (George Simmons of The B.A.D. Blog is better known for his weekly YouTube postings), but perhaps when you have a look, you may see my logic here.Last night, I was watching the news and there was another story about yet another local school district trying to introduce "healthier" snack options by replacing sodas with (and the logic escapes me here) juice, which often contains as many calories and as much sugar as the so-called unhealthy beverages they are supposed to be replacing.Bottled water IS healthier, but replacing sodas with juices that are often loaded with high-fructose corn syrup and other crap make the newly chosen beverages no better than the sodas which have been banned by many school districts across the country. I'm sorry, but if...

Well, third-quarter earnings are being released en masse this week and next, and among the major drug companies, Pfizer and Lilly are releasing their earnings results today (October 18, 2007). Pfizer was the first one to release its results, and the company released a bombshell of sorts: they are pulling the plug on Exubera, the inhalable insulin that was released with much fanfare back in 2006. But the company made numerous mistakes in entering a business segment (diabetes) that they knew nothing about, and approached the market with a sense of arrogance that doomed the product.Pfizer Inc posted third-quarter 2007 revenues of $12.0 billion, a 2% decline from the same period last year. The company's reported net income was $761 million in the third quarter of 2007, a decrease of 77% from t...

In a sign that the FDA does not want to see a repeat of the events that occurred regarding the type 2 diabetes drug Avandia requiring more label warnings due to risk of cardiovascular events associated with that drug, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has called attention to something which appears to be a tiny risk associated with another type 2 diabetes drug, Byetta. The Avandia incident received widespread media attention and brought Congress to re-examine the FDA's review procedures.Yesterday, the FDA reported that the popular injectable medicine to treat type 2 diabetes, Byetta (known generically as exenatide), may be linked to cases of acute pancreatitis in some patients. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis (the kind that was linked by the FDA to B...

Apart from timely mammography, a simple urine test on Estrogen Metabolite Index (EMI) can help in determining whether one is at risk for developing breast cancer.
Are you concerned whether your intake of Oral Contraceptive Pills or Hormone Replacement Therapy may put you at risk? The following bit of information may answer some of those gnawing questions.
From Estrogen Carcinogenesis in Breast Cancer by James D. Yager, Ph.D., and Nancy E. Davidson, M.D., New England Journal of Medicine [2006;354:270-82]:

Studies of breast cancer have consistently found an increased risk associated with elevated blood levels of endogenous estrogen, clinical indicators of persistently elevated blood estrogen levels, and exposure to exogenous estrogen plus progestin through hormone-replacement therapy ...

It turns out that unsolicited advice about chronic illness like diabetes is seen as a taboo topic by many people, akin to politics and religion according to a new survey of more than 1,000 American adults. But the number and percentage who feel it is taboo is not as many (or as high) as one might expect. The survey was released by Evercare, a provider of health plans for people who have chronic illnesses, are older, or have disabilities which is owned by healthcare giant United Healthcare.According to the survey, which was released yesterday, 82% of respondents said they knew someone with a chronic illness, but were more likely to discourage friends or loved ones from buying the wrong house (65%), loan them a large amount of money (56%), advise them against taking a job they didn't think w...

But I don't believe that was anything inherently wrong with the book itself. To be quite honest, I think the problem was more me wanting to get back to the Twilight series. I made the mistake of reading Twilight first and having three completely different books for the remaining challenge books when what I really wanted to read instead was New Moon and then Eclipse. I didn't want to have anything to do with another author or set of characters. ...

George Clooney & Patient Privacy Rights

This week, patient medical records and patient privacy received some unusual media attention because one of Hollywood's own, George Clooney, allegedly had his medical records violated by more than two dozen employees at the Palisades Medical Center in New Jersey who supposedly handed his medical records over to the media. Clooney visited the medical center when he and girlfriend, Sarah Larson, were treated for injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident recently. Those employees, incidentally, have been suspended without pay for a month. They were suspended because Clooney is a celebrity, but if the same thing happened to an average person, I suspect they wouldn't have even been reprimanded.Unfortunately, medical privacy is a huge issue that has yet to receive the kind of public attention ...

Dow Jones is reporting that shares of French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis rose 2.8% in Paris amid market speculation that Pfizer is eyeing the purchase of a stake in Sanofi-Aventis from oil giant Total and cosmetics firm L'Oreal (which once owned a majority stake in Sanofi prior to its merger with Aventis), and supposedly Pfizer may also be mulling a full takeover. Sanofi Aventis is the manufacturer of the world's best-selling insulin analog: Lantus, as well as the rapid-acting insulin analog Apidra, and Amaryl, a sulfonylurea to treat type 2 diabetes. Traditionally, the French government encouraged companies own large shares of other French companies in spite of having no strategic interest via tax incentives. But these days, many French companies now trade in London as well, where...

Bipolar Fun- The Con

It makes perfect sense. Bipolar disorder is an illness of variations, therefore the entertainment this week is from two variations on the con game. The first con exploits bipolar disorder in an attempt to trick the court system into handing down a ‘get out of jail free card.’ The second con uses caring words and ridiculous ‘celebrations’ to maintain the status quo thereby securing benefactor roles for two organizations. Bipolar disorder is once again at play this week. This time it is a pawn in simple and elaborate con games. Let’s begin with a master con artist, Sharon Blevins. Blevins, the would-be ‘poster child for bipolar disorder,’ seems an unlikely choice for a poster child. As, Mike Willis, the team leader of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service describes, “She [Blevin...

Investigate Harvard: Rebecca Riley A Preventable Tragedy:Make a donation on behalf of my daughter

.Reading this post at Pharmalot-Massachussetts to Track Meds Given to Kids, is discussing Rebecca Riley's death. Read further to the comment section where people are discussing Biederman and investigating Harvard as to what responsibility it has in this situation. I found this post via this one at Furious Seasons-Lilly Updates Zyprexa label.Considering all that I have ever researched as a mother, Biederman is an influential key player in the childhood bipolar paradigm, along with ADHD--there is no question the Harvard stamp of approval goes far...into broad spectrum diagnoses happening to kids all over the United States, as a result of psychiatrists having this influence them as well as the trickle down effect to parents.Who does one believe? Parents don't have authority to write RX's so w...
