By Roger PilonToday POLITICO Arena asks:
Given that Planned Parenthood’s online donations have shot up over the last two months, is Mike Pence (R-Ind.) correct to say it could — and should — operate without taxpayer funds?
My response:
Given that many Americans believe that abortion is murder, of course Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading abortion provider, should not be publicly funded. (And please don’t say that no taxpayer funds go for abortions: money is fungible.)
Democrats think that almost everything should be publicly funded – education, health care, retirement, the arts. What’s next? News? Entertainment? Oh, I forgot: NPR and PBS. But only that programming that meets their exacting standards. FOX News? Faget about it! Where you from? Kansas? And they won...

By Roger PilonToday POLITICO Arena asks:
Given the push by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) to deny all federal funding to Planned Parenthood, are we seeing the revival of abortion as a major fault line in American politics?
My response:
Opponents of the push to deny federal funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers will try to inflame the debate by characterizing the push as an attack on the Supreme Court's discovery of a right to abortion. But the issue goes much deeper and is perfectly generalizable: it's a push to get government out of one more controversial area of life.
Most modern liberals fail to grasp -- or ignore -- a fundamental principle of political theory, namely, that the more we do collectively, the more liberty is restricted and passions are inflamed. That's w...

By Michael F. CannonAccording to MSNBC, Democratic leaders have given up on trying to appease pro-life House Democrats:
House leaders have concluded they cannot change a divisive abortion provision in President Barack Obama’s health care bill and will try to pass the sweeping legislation without the support of ardent anti-abortion Democrats.A break on abortion would remove a major obstacle for Democratic leaders in the final throes of a yearlong effort to change health care in America. But it sets up a risky strategy of trying to round up enough Democrats to overcome, not appease, a small but possibly decisive group of Democratic lawmakers in the House…
Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman of California, chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee…predicted some of the anti-abo...

The following post represents my personal opinion and not that of any groups or organizations with which I am affiliated.
Okay, it’s enough already! Why is it that women are always the target? First it’s abortions, then mammograms, pap smears following closely, behind and now cosmetic surgery (although that’s not only women!) It looks like the Congress is desperate to find any savings anywhere. Why not tell it like it is, it’s raising taxes. Whether it is through so called elective procedures or levying taxes on devices and diagnostics, to be passed on to the patients, it’s a tax.
Instead of rewriting the rules on mammograms which will cost lives, maybe not that many, but if it is your life that’s all that matters and focusing on false positives and unnecessary screening, ...

President Obama’s approach to health care reform — forcing taxpayers to subsidize health insurance for tens of millions of Americans — cannot not change the status quo on abortion.
Either those taxpayer dollars will fund abortions, or the restrictions necessary to prevent taxpayer funding will curtail access to private abortion coverage. There is no middle ground.
Thus both sides’ fears are justified. Both sides of the abortion debate are learning why government should not subsidize health care. Tip of the hat to President Obama for creating this teachable moment.
Meanwhile, Catholics should be outraged at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (to which my grandfather served as counsel). Yes, the USCCB helped prevent taxpayer funding of abortions in the H...

It’s that time of the year again for us horror movie fans to indulge in some great and not so great films with the Toronto Afterdark Film Festival. A friend of mine wanted to see the movie, The Children, so much he ordered if off of the Amazon UK site. I fought temptation to ask him if I could borrow it. What stopped me was the sudden memory was of the last time years ago of borrowing Man Bites Dog – the uncensored version on VHS, and never getting back to him.
Given that not so great precedent, I decided to keep my mouth shut. When the line up for the festival came out, I was delighted to see that they had brought in The Children for a screening.
The director was not able to be there, however, he did send a message to be read via email.
This movie is made for all of you hav...

Despite the legality of abortion, those who work in facilities that provide abortions are still at risk from some people who don’t believe that abortions should be done. This became abundantly clear with today’s murder of 67-year-old Dr. George Tiller, one of the country’s few providers of late-term abortions.
According to the news, the father of four and grandfather of 10 was shot to death as he participated in his role as usher at the Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kansas.
Dr. Tiller had received numerous threats over the course of his careeer. He was shot in both arms in 1993 and his clinic was bombed in 1985.
Late term abortions
The term “late term abortion” is a controversial one. Some people refer to any abortion after 12 weeks as a late term ab...

What do you want to do when you grow up...December 2008 (1)As Jenny walked into the consulting room it was clear that she was distraught. She was in tears before she started talking. She is about seventeen weeks into her second pregnancy. She already has a two-year old daughter. Jenny is forty-two. She married late in life, at thirty-eight. Until then, although she was a full-time primary school teacher, she was also an as near as dammit full-time carer for her elderly mother. Then mother died unexpectedly and, within a year, rather to her surprise, Jenny was married to a fellow teacher, who is now fifty. Yesterday, she had the result of the amniocentesis. She is carrying a Down’s Syndrome baby.Jenny is going to have an abortion. You can call it a “termination” or a TOP if that makes...
