Is failure an option?

No one wants to be wrong; ever. As much as there are trendy business mantras such as ‘Fail Fast’ which apparently encourage failure (as long as you learn quickly), it somehow just doesn’t translate to the world of a pharmaceutical company. In fact, ‘fail-fast’ is really an engineering concept that is most often considered in a research and development phase, long before a product reaches the general public where it might affect reputation.
To be fair, any kind of ‘failure’ in the world of pharmaceutical companies can potentially result in a significant loss in some form or another which could include shareholder value, customer confidence, or general credibility, not to mention individual careers.
Consequently, we are risk-averse. Rightly so.
As much as no individual wants to...

The British Pharmaceutical Industry Issues Social Media Guidance for Adverse Event Reporting

Once again the Brits have beaten the US in issuing useful guidelines for social media use by the pharmaceutical industry! As I reported back in April, 2011, the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA), which oversees the self-regulatory code of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), published "informal guidance" providing the drug industry advice on how to use online communications (see here).I learned today from a tweet by @dawidge (a Pfizer employee) that the ABPI Pharmacovigilance Expert Network (PEN) published GUIDANCE NOTES ON THE MANAGEMENT OF ADVERSE EVENTS AND PRODUCT COMPLAINTS FROM PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY SPONSORED WEBSITES (find the document here). The guidance addresses three different ways that pharmaceutical companies may learn of adver...

Bayer Tries To Have It Both Ways In Yasmin Ad

So how is this for subtlety? A journal ad for the Yasmin contraceptive pill sold by Bayer noted that the med had a beneficial effect on acne, fluid retention, hirsutism and premenstrual symptoms. At the same time, much smaller type mentioned that acne and fluid retention may be uncommon side effects and that Yasmin is not licensed as a treatment for any of the four afflictions.
And so a general practitioner in the UK filed a complaint with the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority, which is responsible for administering the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry’s practice code. The anonymous doc believed it was “highly unethical” to put misleading info into an ad and that patents could be placed at an unnecessary risk.
The upshot? A review panel found...

It was ironically only a couple of weeks ago that Creation Healthcare published a piece about “Healthcare engagement in the absence of regulatory guidance”. In that article, I made the point that “specific social media guidance cannot keep pace with change”, and more importantly that when using 3rd party engagement platforms like Facebook, Flickr or Twitter, a pharmaceutical company needs to ‘plan for change’.
In what I perceive as a positive step, the PMCPA recently issued guidance on ‘Digital Communications’. I was pleasantly surprised to see a certain level of clarity and an attempt to be non-technology specific. I still felt that in some cases it was too specific, which I will explain as you read on.
Even so, the inevitable ‘What does it mean for me?’ has me once ag...

There is nothing quite like a jury of your peers. And over in the UK, Novo Nordisk management was slapped around quite a bit by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry for breaching industry codes concerning various promotional efforts for its Victoza diabetes med.
What did the drugmaker do wrong? There were two cases, actually. In the first one, Novo Nordisk promoted the med on a website and at a symposium before regulators issued approval. The ABPI appeals board called this a “serious matter” that “displayed a poor understanding of the requirements” of the industry’s own code. In fact, the board was not convinced the drugmaker “understood the seriousness of the matter,” especially given there was another instance involving the same...

In an embarassing comeuppance, Cephalon was slapped around by the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry for discrediting its species by providing inappropriate hospitality to 13 healthcare professionals during a medical congress in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2009. The move came after a complaint was filed anonymously by a perturbed employee, who works as a hospital specialist, and noted a subject of discussion was the Fentora pain patch.
Among the transgressions that prompted the ABPI to admonish one of its own: an official feedback document that was distributed to Cephalon employees, including reps, that had such interesting comments as “Dinner was fantastic,” “great night again,” “took them clubbing,” and “we then went to a few bars and to a c...

OK this is getting ridiculous - much more on the ubiquitous Rodney Elgie here. The full article by Sarah Boseley at the Guardian was published just yesterday and can be read here. I’ll just copy a few paragraphs below.
“Drug companies in Europe, faced with declining sales and a shortage of new products, appear to be making ground in their attempt to enlist a major new ally in their struggle for profits - the patient.
Sales soared in the US after companies were allowed to advertise their prescription medicines on TV and radio and in magazines and newspapers. Patients in America began demanding more drugs and specific, expensive brand-name drugs from their doctors. Now the firms want to target the UK in the same way, and are strongly challenging a ban on direct consumer advertisi...

Will this thread never stop?????
So, Seroxat Sufferers dug around a bit and found out some information about the European Patients’ Forum.
I noticed one of the members of the EPF is Gamian - Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Networks, the contact is listed as one Rodney Elgie…
Rodney Elgie is also mentioned in Charles Medawar’s excellent piece which was published as a briefing for Members of the European Parliament on direct to consumer drug marketing.
It seems that Mr Elgie has a long history working with patient advocate groups and drug companies - a short biography was included in Charles Medawar’s paper:
“Biographical data published alongside a 1998 article Elgie wrote for Pfizer Forum reads as follows: “Rodney Elgie has been an attorney in p...

I’ve written about direct to consumer advertising a few times this year here, here and here. I don’t know why I bothered really!
Charles Medawar at Social Audit has written the definitive piece on the subject - and he wrote it 2001. You can see it here at Social Audit. This really is an excellent piece which was in fact published as a briefing for Members of the European Parliament on DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER DRUG PROMOTION:
“There is clear and worrying evidence that European patient organisations are coming to resemble their counterparts in the USA. The industry has gone to great and sometimes improper lengths to get patient organisations on side – sweetening them to an extent that might be expected to diminish fai...

In my previous post about Pharma TV, I wrote: “The TV pilot was welcomed by the European Patients’ Forum. The forum, an umbrella group, is one of only two patient organisations admitted to the working group set up by the commission to discuss changes in the rules.
