Title: Tackling problem drug use (Executive Summary)
Skinny: National Audit Office report that identifies good progress in a number of areas, including an increasing number of problem drug users in effective treatment and an increasing number leaving treatment free from dependency. Without an evaluative framework for the Strategy as a whole, the NAO is not able to conclude positively on value for money. Nevertheless, the NAO note that the Drug Treatment Outcomes Research Study (DTORS) has estimated the benefit-cost ratio for drug treatment, the largest element of spending, at 2.5 to 1 and that the programme has delivered some significant successes.
There are an estimated third of a million problem drug users in England. As part of an increased emphasis on drug treatment, funding rose from ...

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life… as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”
- Booker T. Washington
With multiple premiers of The Chronicles of EMS and a wave of enthusiasm from the EMS Today conference in Baltimore, the future of EMS looks bright, blindingly-bright. I’m incredibly optimistic about where this crazy experiment in EMS is headed, but I also see some big hurdles in our path.
Put on your shades and let’s talk about what I feel are the five biggest challenges to EMS reform.
1.) We’ve been talking a lot about unity and standardization, but individual EMS systems are unique in every way. How do you influence standardization and still allow for the tremendous leeway required for ...

Title: Powder cocaine : how the treatment system is responding to a growing problem
Skinny: NHS National Treatment Agency for Substance Abuse report on the effectiveness of treatment for cocaine use following statistics from the British Crime Survey, showing around one in ten adults have tried cocaine at some point in their lives. Treatment consists of psychosocial techniques, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, which help users to understand and then to change their behaviour. Most powder cocaine users start treatment with a specialist drug treatment service, based in the community, within a week of being referred (on average, it takes just over five days).
Key findings:

Within six months of entering treatment, 61% of those in the study had abstained from using cocaine for at least ...

This freely available perspective piece from the New England Journal of Medicine ties in nicely to what Dr. Abraham Verghese said last week about engaging at the patient bedside – Ministry of Touch — Reflections on Disaster Work after the Haitian Earthquake. It includes this line about the approach to women in labor: “We develop a system whereby one of us sits behind the woman and holds her, another rubs her back, and I sit or kneel near her, touching her belly and legs, whispering words of encouragement. I pray, and I watch the woman’s face for clues as the labor progresses.”

Everyone is a psychologist. By that I mean that everyone tries to work out why people behave the way they do. This is an inbuilt social drive that helps us to interact normally. It is based on theory of mind which is about understanding other people’s mental states and intentions. Lack of theory of mind is the key disability in Autism. In my work I find that most people have a strong belief about why someone is behaving the way that they do (although in my work I think that it is often a wrong belief).
I think we base our understanding on why others behave the way that they do on what we think about ourselves and our cultural norms. This is essential to group cohesion. No one can truly know how another person is thinking but we automatically make an educated guess. ...

What does “have sex” mean? That’s what researchers wanted to know. Does having sex mean oral sex? Does it mean heavy petting? Or does it mean only acts where there is penetration? While it may not seem to be terribly important to understand what the term means among different groups of people, it actually is. When discussing topics that involve sexual health or abuse, everyone who is participating in the conversation and/or treatment/management, must be on the same page as to what “having sex” is.
To clarify this, or in the hopes of clarifying this, researchers from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University wanted to see what the definition of “having sex” was to most people. This question had originally been asked in 1999, sparked by the then- U....

Via Speak to Power, I learned that a domestic violence shelter in Jackson, TN operated by the Wom/Men’s Resource and Rape Assistance Program had an electrical fire and a new location will be needed (thankfully no one was hurt).
It’s estimated that the agency might need $50,000 to $100,000 to cover what insurance will not. I know people are being asked to give to a lot of worthy causes and might be tapped out, but if you can and want to, you can donate to WRAP via their website.

This is going to be one of those “musing out loud, wall of text” posts, so sit tight, or go look around the archives for shorter fare. Now then. There’s a bill proposed in my home state of Tennessee that would require abortion providers to put up signs effectively saying that it’s illegal for anyone to force a woman to have an abortion.
Okay, then.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing to try to tease out whether a woman is being coerced into having an abortion and to make sure she is choosing abortion of her own free will. In fact, I think that is a pretty standard part of pre-abortion counseling. Still, I don’t see what harm putting up signs in waiting areas and patient areas does. Reinforcing a woman’s personal bodily autonomy is never a bad thi...

Many efforts have been made to shut the place down under state law, but without success. Now that the "big guns" of a Federal civil rights investigation have been brought out, maybe we'll finally get somewhere; I'm cautiously optimistic.More articles about the Judge Rotenberg Center investigation can be found at the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe, Mother Jones, WWJ Newsradio 950, WHDH Channel 7, Left Brain/Right...

There's a campaign to encourage people to rethink the words they choose to write and say. Today, March 3 2010, has been chosen as a day to focus on these issues.Words matter, language matters. When people decide to use as slurs and insults, words that originated as diagnostic labels for various disabilities and/or for various categories of mental illness, real and manufactured ("hysteria") then they contribute to a culture that marginalises people. Disabled people are dehumanised by these words. A society that tolerates the use of slurs like r*t*rd and sp*st*c as equivalent to stupid, useless, pathetic, hateful or annoying, legitimises the hatred that leads to the abuse, murder, forced drugging and sterilisation and discarding of so many disabled people in this country and all around the w...

Golly, it’s been some time since I’ve written a post. It’s not for a lack of thoughts, but rather energy. My sleep has been disturbed by nightmares for, well, months, and the cumulative effect wears me down in the evenings.
This I had posted over years back. As the saying describes, Friends come and go, but [...] (Source: Andrea's Buzzing About:)

Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, co-dependency and compulsive gambling may identify with these points. They may be the victim, the perpetrator or an observer. These reasons apply to heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual and transsexual people.
Additionally, just because someone is in recovery does not exclude them from being difficult in relationships.
Why would a woman stay in a relationship with a guy who puts her down, hems her in, and perhaps even physically abuses her? Why would a woman hold down two jobs to keep the rent paid and food on the table while her boyfriend sits around smoking weed all day? Why oh why would a woman allow herself to be emotionally blackmailed by her boyfriend’s threats that he will kill himself or her or both if she even talks ab...

A lot of medication gets misused, as is the right expression, meaning not used for the intention or indication it was developed for in the first place. This reminded me of one of my first publications on the abuse of anticholinergics.
From case reports it appears that quetiapine is sought after for recreational use and inappropriate use such as intranasal and intravenous administration. Quetiapine is also for sale on the street, symptom malingering to obtain the drug and higher dosage requests. It’s always important to recognize such misuse of medication because in the case of quetiapine it can induce weight gain, glucose intolerance, in rare cases movement disorders. Moreover, these drugs are very expensive and will cost society more money when misused.
In a recent publication a ca...

By Julian SanchezThere’s a lot to unpack in the Office of the Inspector General’s blistering 300-page report on illegal FBI abuse of surveillance authority issued last month, but I want to highlight one especially worrisome aspect, about which I spoke with The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder earlier today.
The very short version of the report’s background finding is that, for several years, analysts at the FBI blithely and illegally circumvented even the minimal checks on their power to demand telephone records under the PATRIOT Act. I’ll go into this further in a future post, but there are strong indicators that the agents involved knew they were doing something shady. Thousands of records were obtained using a basically made-up process called an “exigent lett...

Local and law student Goldni has two good posts this week, one on Roeder’s trial, and one on the parents who tried to get the dictionary removed from school because it contains *gasp* adult words. She writes:
…the fact that it took a whole committee to decide that it would do more good than harm to let the kids use the dictionary, and the fact that there are still some parents who may think that the dictionary may be just too scandalous for their kids, is profoundly disturbing.

I’m hesitant to write this post as I fear some will think it to be “TMI”, but I will promise all my readers that I’m not going to go into any graphic details. I do want to write it because there is a lot of discussion going on about autistic people and whether or not the sensory issues we often experience would impact our sex lives.
There are a few things which aren’t always considered when discussing autistic people and sex. The first is romantic love. This is an emotion we can experience, and a powerful one. Like many of our emotions, I believe this emotion is felt very deeply in many of us. I didn’t particularly think it possible before I met my wife, but it is clear to me that I was wrong about that – I can and do feel it. Experiencing an emoti...

From MomsRising . . .In a staggering announcement this past weekend, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated there's now officially cause for "concern" about toxic Bisphenol-A (BPA) in food and beverage containers, but they stopped short of banning BPA from products children and pregnant and nursing women use everyday.1 It's not enough to just announce "concern." We already know BPA is dangerous, and we know there are safer alternatives. It's time for Congress to take this issue to the next level to keep our kids safe. Urge your U.S. Senators today to co-sponsor and support the Ban Poisonous Additives Act that will ban BPA from food and beverage containers. http://momsrising.democracyinaction.org/o/1768/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=97Bisephenol-A (BPA) is one of the most pervasive...

Will Be Hammered Down.So goes an old Japanese saying, meant to illustrate (as well as inculcate) a sense of conformity among the Japanese people. Westerners (especially Americans) are supposed to place much more value on non-conformity and individuality. But that idea only goes so far, and is noticably absent in the American public school system. When it comes to school kids, conformity is king. And if you step out of line, you will be hammered down, sometimes quite forcefully.Nowhere is this more evident then when it comes to kids with disabilities, especially those on the autism spectrum. Often, kids on the spectrum have various sensory processing difficulties, and may also persevorate on certain things. When they run into difficulty, they can get emotionally "wound up" fairly quickly, a...

Via a message from Aunt B, I learned of this Florida case in which Samantha Burton, a pregnant woman, visited her doctor with sins of a potential miscarriage at ~25 weeks. The doctor ordered bed rest, which Burton declined with the intent of seeking a second opinion, as she believed her two existing young children and keeping her job would make bed rest untenable. The doctor then contacted the state.
She was ordered to stay in bed at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and to undergo “any and all medical treatments” her doctor, acting in the interests of the fetus, decided were necessary. Burton asked to switch hospitals and the request was denied by the court, which said “such a change is not in the child’s best interest at this time.” After three days of hospitalization, she had to u...

Children’s welfare and development entered UK politics yesterday with David Cameron the Conservative leader talking about the warmth of parenting being more important than poverty in outcomes with poor children. Poly Tonybee in the Guardian wrote a stinging reply. This prompted me to think about my experience as a child psychologist with children from neglected backgrounds. For the past 13 years some of my work has involved assessing children in care, both residential and foster care. This has shown me how damaging early experience of abuse and neglect is for children, how it is reinforced and not addressed. It is a big problem. There are approximately 60000 children in care in the UK . The number of children with a child protection plan is increasing every year. The vast...

Those of us who share on this blog often hold back a bit because of the glaring nature of our words staying here forever. We hide behind first names, try to watch our language, although that isn’t always easy to do, and often hold onto our emotions to be civil. In short, we make a noble attempt to behave like ladies and gents. All the while, we know, within each of us we are so much more than just our pain.
We all have homes to run, many have jobs to hold down just to survive and many have children with needs, tears, laughter and love to share. We worry about money, family problems and mortgages, just like everyone else. The difference is that we have this “albatross” to carry, each and every day on top of the usual stresses of li...

New research demonstrates what many of us could guess . . . Being spanked as a child is linked to having a lower IQ, according to a study presented today at the International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego. The relationship between spanking and intelligence is found in children around the world, said the lead author of the study, University of New Hampshire professor Murray Straus. Children in the United States who were spanked had lower IQs -- by 2.8 to 5 points -- than those who were not spanked, Straus found. Straus studied 806 children ages 2 to 4 and 704 ages 5 to 9. Both groups were retested four years later.
What with the new year and decade and all, it seems appropriate to engage in a bit of reflection. First, the blog itself. This year will mark the 5th anniversary of Women’s Health News – I first posted on May 19, 2005, although that was at the blogspot location. While this little blog is not among what most people would name as the top medical or top feminist blogs, I don’t worry too much about traffic, or increasing traffic, so long as at least a a few people are finding it useful and I’m not too overworked to deal with it. So, I expect to continue on for a bit longer. Will it make it to the decade mark? Who knows. I do sometimes find the lack of comments discouraging, but it is what it is. If there is anything you’d like to see covered more often, or less of...

Alcoholism and addiction have several common threads with reciprocal recovery principles.
In their book, “Rethinking Substance Abuse,” editors William R. Miller and Kathleen M. Carroll to sum up what has been learned about the science of addiction. These are;

Drug Use is Chosen Behavior in the Beginning – for experimenting, peer pressure or otherwise its chosen at first.
Drug Problems Emerge Gradually – it takes time to become addicted.
Once Well Established, Drug Problems Tend to Become Self-Perpetuating – once the brain alters it number of drug receptor cells drug craving demands more of the same.
Motivation is Central to Prevention and Intervention – actively doing something toward change may be more important than the particular actions that are ...

Being drunk is a self-induced condition. Becoming ill or being injured as a result of excessive alcohol consumption is therefore also a self-induced condition. Therefore, it only stands to reason, if you’ve caused this to yourself, then you should not benefit from others paying for you to get better, right? Or wrong?
This is mostly an issue for countries with socialized medicine, but it could also be an issue for insurance companies in the United States. In the United Kingdom, a suggestion has been made that people who are sick and/or injured because they abused alcohol should have to pay for their own medical care.
According to this article, New Year drunks should pay for hospital care?, the cost of medical care on the British medical system for people abusing alcohol, is reaching a...

Childhood sexual abuse and the course of alcohol dependence (alcoholism) development
Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been associated with increased risk for alcohol dependence (AD), but the extent to which childhood sexual abuse history may impact transitions in the course of alcohol dependence development remains unclear.
The current study examined the role of childhood sexual abuse in initiation of alcohol use and rate of progression from first drink to alcohol dependence using a sample of 3536 female twins (mean age = 21.6 years). Psychiatric diagnoses and alcohol use histories were obtained via telephone interviews using an adaptation of the SSAGA. The contribution of childhood sexual abuse to alcohol outcomes independent of familial influences was estimated by using co-twin alcohol d...

I just watched “A Girl’s Life” on PBS – it’s not specifically health-focused, but does examine issues of body image, bullying, violence, and education through profiles of four adolescent girls. It was very good and is well worth a watch, even for those without daughters.

Odysseus´ Voyage of Recovery
The story of Odysseus is about more than just a Greek guy in a boat.
About 3000 years ago, the poet Homer told a story about a man called Odysseus and his voyage home to Greece following the Trojan Wars. Odysseus and his men met up with many exciting adventures along the way, but the most relevant to us is the story of his landing on the Island of the Lotus Eaters.
The island was so beautiful that Odysseus wanted to stay there awhile and rest up. So he sent out some scouts to determine if the natives were friendly. Odysseus waited and waited, but the scouts never returned.
What had happened was this: the scouts had indeed met up with the locals, the Lotus Eaters, who turned out to be very friendly. The Lotus Eaters even shared their food with the scouts. But t...

Medication addiction
Prescription medications can sneak up on you and lead to addiction.
Many celebrities have recently fallen victim to prescription medication addiction and/or overdose.
But its not just celebrities that need to be cautious its everyone who takes mood changing, psychoactive or pain medications. Every day medicines hold a punch that may be life changing, life changes you may not normally choose.

A drug addict used to be someone who bought illegal fixes from a shady character in a back alley. But with more and more people admitting addiction to prescription drugs, your ’dealer’ can be the person you least expect to harm your health – your GP or chemist.
Many doctors agree that powerful tranquillisers, sleeping pills and painkillers are addictive, and that the bo...

Understanding alcohol abuse and alcoholism can be a key step in solving drinking problems
Some people worry about their alcohol use but are not convinced that they need help. Friends or relatives might express their concern–”You have a drinking problem.” But often that well-intentioned statement fails to define the issue or suggest a clear solution.
To cut through the confusion, it helps to understand the difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Making this distinction can help you think clearly about a “drinking problem”–and allow you or a loved one to get the kind of help that makes a difference.
Alcohol dependence–often called “alcoholism”–is only one potential complication of drinking. Alcohol abuse can disru...

This delivery plan contributes to key Government initiatives around protecting the public, reducing health inequalities, reducing reoffending and health improvement and protection. Key points are:

Dysfunctional families maintain a false facade in public
Dysfunctional Families; Types, Symptoms and Effect on Children
A dysfunctional family is a family in which conflict, misbehaviour and even abuse on the part of individual members of the family occur continually, leading other members to accommodate such actions. Children sometimes grow up in such families with the understanding that such an arrangement is normal. Dysfunctional families are most often a result of the alcoholism, substance abuse, or other addictions of parents, parents’ untreated mental illnesses/defects or personality disorders, or the parents emulating their own dysfunctional parents and dysfunctional family experiences.
Behavior patterns
Dysfunctional family members have common symptoms and behavior patterns as a ...

These drugs are available legally only by prescription, to treat conditions that occur when the body produces abnormally low amounts of testosterone, such as delayed puberty and some types of impotence. They are also prescribed to treat body wasting in patients with AIDS and other diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass.
1. Introduction:
Some years ago while I was working as a health care assistant in operating theatres a student nurse from Ireland consumed alcohol excessively during her 21st birthday party. The next day she attended the accident and emergency department but was sent away diagnosed with a hangover. Normal doses of self-administered paracetamol overloaded her liver due to her dehydrated state and she subsequently underwent a liver transplant. Unfortunately she then had a stroke and died in the intensive care unit. Her 18 year old sister who was also a student nurse went back to Ireland in a state of distress. My last shift in theatres before I departed to University ended with an alcoholic man bleeding to death. I still remember the distinctive smell of blood which at first could not be see...

Morning Edition this morning provided an update on the case of Scott Roeder, accused of murdering Dr. George Tiller (summary here, there doesn’t seem to be a transcript).
Roeder pleaded not guilty in the shooting of Dr. Tiller, has admitted killing him, and claims he did it to protect unborn children (who I’d say were under no immediate threat while Dr. Tiller was at church that day). The justifiable homicide defense has apparently not been allowed when it has been attempted in previous cases of this nature. One supporter of the defense is interviewed and compares Roeder’s plea to stepping forward to defend a born child under attack, but the piece notes that Dr. Tiller was not engaged in any illegal activity, creating a distinction between the acts.
The piece also notes ...

This entry is part 15 of 15 in the series Regulation of PsychotherapyLast week I highlighted the role of Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology at Essex University, in the Derek Gale abuse case.
Samuels is currently claiming (see comments thread) that it’s an “urban myth” that he offered to be his Gale’s supervisor if Gale’s suspension from the Health Professions Council was lifted. If it’s an urban myth, it’s one that has spread to the transcripts of the HPC hearing. (PDF file: see pages 36, 37 and 47)
It turns out Professor Samuels wasn’t the only prominent psychotherapist to leap to Gale’s support when he was up before the HPC for running a deeply abusive therapy cult. Time now to meet Brian Thorne, Emeritus Professor of ...

I'm going to be forwarding it to the Ugandan High Commission in Ottawa and to the attention of my member of Parlement, for there are a number of issues that they should be considering. I don't give a flying fig about the sin of homosexuality. I'm not convinced of the argument and for me it's moot. And if it is a sin, it's mentioned as being fairly much on the level of mixing flax and wool in one garment. It's not mentioned at all in the big ten - but the bearing of false witness, that's right up there. So, if you must throw stones, you might consider starting there. And I assure you, all the things stated about gay people by those responsible for agitating you all to commit what ...

Therefore the promotion of healthy positive experiences for children is a necessary and potentially cost-effective target for the prevention of age-related disease.' Co-author Professor Avshalom Caspi, Duke University, US, adds: 'What we're learning is that poor adult health is, in part, manufactured in childhood. It is multiple and cumulative childhood experience that predisposes adults to poor health.' The authors now wish to further study how adverse psychosocial experiences can become biological risks in childhood. (And, goodness me, but isn’t it noticeable how disengaged from the debate the MN regulars have been? You can’t move for comments from them when they’re arguing about nursing becoming an all-graduate profession (something that will make slightly less than f.-all difference to patients), but when it comes to a discussion of what ought to be the single most pressing issue any of them will ever encounter in their entire professional lives – the systematic abuse of the people they are theoretically meant to care for – suddenly there’s all sorts of other things they have to worry about instead.
For abused women, leaving is a complex and confusing process
I have seen and heard of this process in many of my clients (men and women) who were partners of alcoholics, addicts, compulsive gamblers or sex addicts.
Additionally, I have seen these stages of leaving in recovering people who have codependent partners who will not change their behaviours. In other words, the codependent behaviour is itself abusive.
Nothing could be easier than walking out the door, right? According to a new University of Illinois journal article, an abused woman actually goes through a five-step process of leaving that can be complicated at every stage by boundary ambiguity.

A great video from Face The Issue about abuse narrated by Halle Berry.
The following is an anonymous quote from a victim of abuse.
..when I’m being beat, just hit, or shouted at.
Been bullied by mam all my life, which is probably a factor.
With a few people I almost wanted them to hurt me, usually people I love. I wanted to be told. I really have no idea why, of course I want to be treated good and that, but theres just that underlying need to be hurt. I feel like I deserve it.
Aye, I feel like sh!t about it, even now when other people shout at me or raise their hand(it’s only been once or twice), I almost always cut after. With other people, it isn’t rage though, just sadness.

But in the actual moment I can’t help myself, I laugh, I usually dont try and protect mys...

Many years ago, I learned something that changed my life. I had no idea how profound this was at the time, although I did immediately see the power of the change. It’s simple: I decided to move on from the abuse. In my case, I did this with God’s help, although I think non-religious people could probably find other ways to make this possible.
Let me explain what I mean when I say I “moved on”. I did not forget the abuse (I still sometimes wish I could), nor did I simply put a smile on my face and pretend what happened to me wasn’t “really” all that bad. No, part of moving on requires acceptance that what I went through was something nobody should ever experience, a crime that showed the evil humanity is capable of towards others. I do n...

This study now establishes a link between early psychosocial stress and shorter telomere length. Researchers have also found that telomeres shorten at a higher rate when exposed to toxins, such as radiation or cigarette smoke. Other studies have looked at adult female caregivers who are responsible for children with developmental delays, determining a link between accelerated telomere shortening and the higher stress levels the caregivers faced. This may be the first attempt to look at telomere length in relation to childhood mistreatment. Researchers said the early findings are compelling, because they looked at adults who were otherwise healthy and had not had any current or past psychiatric disorders. The early data shows strong links between childhood stress and the accelerated shorten...

Assorted things of interest from the previous week.
It’s not nearly as controversial as the USPSTF’s breast cancer screening recommendations, but ACOG released a new practice bulletin on cervical cancer screening. The New York Times has coverage of the change, which is basically that women can wait until up to 21 years of age to start getting Pap tests, and then can get Paps every 2-3 years instead of every year once they’ve had a few normal tests. This is not entirely new – the USPSTF’s 2003 recommendations are very, very similar. (so, 6 years from now, we’ll be cool w/ the breast cancer recs?)
Some lots of Vick’s Sinex nasal spray are being recalled due to bacterial contamination.
The FDA has tips on holiday food safety.

It wasn’t about their behaviors, though I’d make it a point to avoid a beating by wandering the neighborhood til the lights went out, go home and step over mom on the way to the kitchen, eat a tub of Cool Whip, fall asleep on the couch and wake up with a caregiver’s dick in my mouth. Go down to the basement and burn my cum-stained nightie in the laundrytub, thinking, then head off to school in rumpled overalls and mother’s torn nylons, sleep at my desk while intuitive classmates point and ridicule, gearing up for the beatdown I was hoping to dodge by the bullies on the playground.
For many Americans there is an unfortunate notion that our health care is the best in the world, so, when I recently read an article entitled "The Epidemic of Medical Child Abuse, and what can be done", I had to share some statements and comment.

Just read the first statement from author, Dana Ullman:

The primary purpose of this article is to encourage a stronger commitment from doctors and parents to consider using safer medical care for infants and children FIRST before resorting to more dangerous treatments.
I absolutely agree with this statement. It's not to say that there are not medical treatments which are necessary and lifesaving, but are there options. What are those options? Take constipation for example. I have seen numerous children hospitalized due to constipation. When if...

Recently, I and many others wrote about an Oklahoma abortion law that could potentially seriously compromise the privacy (and safety) of women seeking abortions in that state. At issue is the law’s requirement that that each individual form be posted to a publicly available website. While traditionally identifying information would not be included on the form, public posting is an unnecessary for data collection and analysis and could still jeopardize women’s privacy (see this post for more on why I think that’s the case).
The Center for Reproductive Rights has filed a lawsuit challenging the law. Via Women’s eNews, I learned that a temporary restraining order has been issued to block enforcement of the law until the district court judge has a chance to review the c...

By Patricia McAdams, HBNS Contributing Writer Many U.S. children face a terrible burden of stressors that can harm the development of their brains and nervous systems. These stressors can lead to health problems and diseases throughout their lives, ultimately causing some to die prematurely, according to the lead author of a new study. David W. Brown, DSc, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and colleagues found that children who were exposed to six or more "adverse childhood experiences" or ACEs were at double the risk of premature death compared to children who had not suffered these experiences. On average, the children at highest risk eventually died at age 60, compared to low-risk children who lived to age 79. The study appears in the November is...

Children have a certain disempowerment simply because they are young — they are naïve, less learned, and lack perspective. But this transcended childhood. It sank past the boundaries of adult to child, or parent to child, and trampled my self-identity and self-determination.

Before you go into psychotherapy, you should be informed of your rights as a patient ahead of time by the therapist. The therapist should, in addition, give you a printed copy of something that reads similar to the below, so that you can take it home with you. We’ve long had a version of these rights here on our website, but I thought it might be helpful to further describe or explain each right in a little more detail.
Therapists nowadays may also often offer you their guidelines for electronic and/or outside contact, (such as through Facebook, email, telephone, etc). This sets the ground rules for how you may contact the therapist outside of session, in event of an emergency, or in the event that you just want to share something with your therapist (or change your appointment or su...

Newsflash: Having Sex w/ an Unconscious Drunk Person *is* Rape

I was watching To the Contrary on PBS this morning, and one of the topics was the FBI-reported decrease in rape. One of the panelists essentially attributed this decline in reported rapes to college women being s.ty drunks who just give it up, and said, as best I can recall the word-for-word: “and once you black out, you can’t say it was rape.”
Oh yes you @#$%ing can. Unconscious people cannot consent to sex.
Other panelists were more tolerable, including addressing the issue of not blaming women for being raped (you know, since the rapists are the ones actually responsible). In another segment, they spoke briefly to Matthew Shepard’s mom and talked about hate crimes legislation. I’ll update with the link to the transcript after it’s available.

A new law, HB 1595, is set to take effect that could potentially seriously compromise the privacy (and safety) of women seeking abortions in that state. The law deals in part with collection of data about abortion in the state via an Individual Abortion Form which asks providers a number of questions about the details of the procedure and the woman requesting it.
The law requires that the State Department of Health make the form available on its website to abortion providers, and that providers complete a form for each department and submit it to the State Department of Health. This in itself is not so problematic, as many states have this type of surveillance in place. Collecting this type of data, and reporting it in aggregate, allows us to know things that run contrary to popular myths...

By Maia Szalavitz, HBNS Contributing Writer Child abuse has had a known association with increased risk for virtually all types of psychological and psychiatric problems - but a new evidence review suggests that it raises the risk of physical illness just as much. The review analyzed data from 24 studies comprising 48,801 adults who had been victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse or neglect as children. "The potential negative effects of abuse are as large in magnitude for physical health as they are for mental health," said study co-author Cinnamon Stetler, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Furman University in South Carolina. The average age of participants was 38; most were women and the time that had passed since the abuse varied among studies. "In general,...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In families with a history of child abuse, a mother's depression may increase the risk that she will act aggressively toward her child, a new study suggests. The study, which followed 5,500 U.S. families investigated by child- welfare agencies, found that when a mother developed depression, the odds of her child suffering "psychologically aggressive acts" — including threats or name-calling — increased.
More on Sylvia Tagle, the special ed teacher convicted of putting hot sauce in soda and allowing a child to drink it: Did she do it? Tagle has defenders who describe her as a caring and committed teacher. Was she? I am having a hard time getting a complete picture because the coverage of this story was so skimpy. I can understand why there wasn’t much space devoted to it. It just doesn’t seem like that big a story.

Abstract: Childhood maltreatment linked to greater symptom severity and poorer quality of life and function in social anxiety disorder

Conclusions: Despite the use of validated assessments, our findings are limited by the retrospective and subjective nature of self-report measures used to assess childhood maltreatment. Nonetheless, these data suggest a high rate of childhood maltreatment in individuals seeking treatment for GSAD, and the association of maltreatment with greater disorder severity suggests that screening is clinically prudent.
Title: Seeing double: meeting the challenge of dual diagnosis
The Skinny: Dual diagnosis is the term used to describe people who have concurrent mental health and substance misuse or alcohol problems. It affects a third of mental health service users, half of substance misuse service users and 70 per cent of prisoners.
Key Issues:

Dual diagnosis affects a third of mental health service users, half of substance misuse service users and 70 per cent of prisoners.
There are some examples of excellent mainstreamed services in this area. However, at a national level provision is patchy and remains an area of concern.
Service users with a dual diagnosis typically use NHS services more and cost more. Improving provision for users with dual diagnosis could save money.

As sometimes happens, the comments posted about a news item are as eye-opening as the event itself. A Miami special education teacher, Sylvia Tagle, will be sentenced Oct. 7 for spiking an autistic student’s soda with hot sauce. I read several reports in an attempt to untangle what happened; best as I can figure out, the soda was on Tagle’s desk and the student took it. Whose soda was it? Tagle’s defense attorney says it was her own. (Because so many people love hot sauce in soda.) Prosecutors say she did it knowing the student would take the soda, and she put the hot sauce in to teach him a lesson.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
A year ago A.J. and Lisa Demaree of Peoria, Ariz. thought they were taking pictures of their daughters taking a bath, but to a Wal-Mart employee, the Demarees were committing “child erotica” and “sex exploitation.”
I didn’t realize that child pornographers were in the habit of schlepping their images over to Wal-Mart, but what do I know?
Child Protective Services took custody of the kids for a month, and the couple, who were never charged, spent $75,000 on legal fees. Now the Demarees are suing both the state of Arizona and Wal-Mart. The Demarees’ lawyer released a photo, available at the San Francisco Chronicle Web site…

One would have had to have been living in a cave in the greater disability community two years ago not to have noticed the Ransom Notes Campaign and the furor that followed it. In that campaign the NYU Child Study Center put out an ad campaign that implied that autistic individuals (as well as those with a number of other conditions) had been kidnapped. This imagery was (not surprisingly) extremely offensive to many in the greater disability community. After an intense counter campaign by disability advocacy groups, including ASAN, the Ransom Notes Campaign was stopped. The above video takes up where the Ransom Campaign ended, and goes on from there. Not content just to dehumanize autistic individuals, the Autism Speaks video goes on to paint a picture of horror using the most vivid imagery...

Whenever a high-profile person dies as a result of abusing prescription drugs, it brings to light how serious the problem really is. To that end, a new study found that overall people are abusing prescription drugs less than the before. I’d like to think that it has something to do with learning from each other. If one person admits that prescription drugs are dangerous, perhaps it will help another person think twice about their use of the product as well. It will also help people become aware of what it means to become addicted.

The survey found that 2.5% of Americans (or 6.2 million) said they abused prescription drugs, which is down from 2.8% in 2007. Of course, this is a survey in which people admitted to abuse. As we know, sometimes the problem with abuse is not realizing you ...

By Amy Sutton, HBNS contributing writer On TV, Sex and the City makes regular Cosmo-drinking sessions seem like a glamorous, harmless pastime. In reality, though, excessive alcohol use can relate to overeating and depression in young women, according to the results of a new study. "Anyone who has been touched by depression, obesity or alcoholism knows that these disorders on their own can be devastating. When they're combined, these disorders become more costly, more difficult to treat and more impairing," said Carolyn McCarty, PhD, lead study author and a research associate professor at the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Research Institute. In the study in the September/October issue of the journal General Hospital Psychiatry, the researchers surveyed 393 men and 383 wome...

We've all heard about viruses and websites that steal our sensitive private information. Cyberstalking has also become a problem on social media sites. Blogs, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook, in particular, are prone to this sort of abuse. But even cellphone texting can be a problem since you can forward others details where ever you want. Although there are mixed reviews of just how much of a risk there is, there is agreement there is a risk. Parents should certainly provide supervision for their kids with the youngest getting the most.

Individual drinking habits may be found on a process from responsible drinking through alcohol abuse to alcoholism, or physical dependence. There are many signs that may point to an alcohol problem.
Drunkenness on its own or solitary drinking does not necessarily indicate alcoholism. The questionnaire will be meaningful to you only if you are honest with yourself when taking it.
The important question is: Is your use of alcohol creating significant negative consequences in your life?

Do you sometimes drink heavily after a setback or an argument, or when you receive a poor grade?
When you experience trouble or are undergoing stress, do you always drink more heavily than usual?
Can you handle more liquor now than you could when you first began drinking?
Have you ever awakened the &quo...

We’ve all heard the stories about people who dial 911 for things like not getting the right meal at a drive thru restaurant, or being angry at someone in line at the store, or simply because they are lonely. They make for funny news headlines, but these types of events are costing the taxpayers money. As the battle for healthcare rages on, this issue has been brought to the forefront.

While we often hear about the most outrageous calls to 911, the reality is that many of them are often just people upset with the medical system and looking for information. If they don’t get a response from their doctor, they dial 911. One source says half of the 911 calls in a specific “county are not really emergencies.” Calls can cost up to $500. If it turns out to be a non-emerge...

In this study, the researchers looked at how smoking and heavy drinking are associated with the trait. A person with high neuroticism is likely to experience anxiety or depression and may self-medicate with tobacco, alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism. They found that smoking accounted for about 25 percent to 40 percent of the association between high neuroticism and mortality. The other 60 percent is unexplained, but possibly attributed to biological factors or other environmental issues that neurotic individuals experience, Mroczek said. The researchers analyzed data of 1,788 men and their smoking behavior and personality traits over a 30-year period from 1975 to 2005. The data was part of the VA Normative Aging Study, which is a long-term study of aging men based at the Boston VA Out...

The Skinny: Revised set of multi-agency practice guidelines for frontline professionals (such as teachers, police officers, social and health care professionals, housing officers) to help them to work more closely together and to better identify and protect children and adults at risk of forced marriage. The revised guidelines replace the existing individual guidelines which were tailored for specific professionals and now brings these together into one single document.

The Web was buzzing after Billy Mays was found to have a mix of drugs in his system that included three different pain killers and cocaine. Because cocaine was in this mix, it led many to wonder if perhaps Mays was abusing prescription drugs, as well as the illegal drug of cocaine. So would a doctor really prescribe hydrocodone, oxycodone, and tramadol to one patient?

In a word, yes. It can happen with chronic pain. One source says that a:
“doctor might prescribe one medication to treat chronic, baseline pain and another one for a more acute pain that the first drug couldn’t prevent. In unusual circumstances, a third medication might be used to treat another “breakthrough” pain.”

I can only speak for myself, to be sure, but it seems to me that anyone with any sense of history and the slightest degree of rational paranoia felt a distinct chill when Bush announced the formation of The Department of Homeland Security, with it's eerie resonance to the Fascist "Fatherland" and the Stalinist "Motherland."Note that both Stalinist and Fascist states have one thing in common - a certain disdain for human rights and dignity when any particular person or idea is thought to be a threat to the state, for whatever reason, by whatever pinhead happens to be wearing the jackboots. It was no real surprise to me that the response of Homeland Security was lackadaisical in response to Hurricane Katrina, or that in absorbing FEMA (which was arguably one of the two most competent agencies...

Abstract: Early adversity and 5-HTT/BDNF genes: new evidence of gene–environment interactions on depressive symptoms in a general population

Conclusions Childhood adversity per se predicted higher levels of adult depressive symptoms. In addition, BDNF Val66Met and 5-HTTLPR polymorphisms seemed to moderate the effect of CSA on adult depressive symptoms. (Glossary links added; ed.) Source...
Abstract: Childhood neglect and abuse as predictors of antidepressant response in adult depression

Conclusions: The experience of having a neglectful father or an overprotective mother was more predictive of response to treatment for depression than abuse, suggesting that the quality of ongoing intra-familial relationships has a greater impact on treatment outcomes for depression than experiences of discrete abuse in childhood.
5 Reasons Your Life Will Improve Through Writing

Before I began to write, I didn’t fully understand the effects of the past on the present. Instead, for years, the past appeared in my mind’s eye like faded black-and-white photographs, in which no one, especially me, seemed to be fully alive.
Growing up, I lived a double life. On the face of it, we seemed like a normal, happy family: My father had an important career. We lived in nice houses and wore pretty clothes. But all this seeming perfection was a veneer, masking the reality that my father sexually molested me, a reality never spoken aloud.
Later, as an adult, I continued to live a double life: this time as a sex addict. Again, in public, I appeared normal, with a seemingly good marriage. No one knew that the shiny façade hid dark secrets: I cheated on my husband....

Depression Increases the Risk of Major Diseases and Illnesses

It’s fairly known that depression can occur after a heart attack and can increase the likelihood of a second heart attack. But did you know that the flip side is also true? That depression itself can increase a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. A recent Johns Hopkins Health Alert reports:
Prospective studies show that people who had no CHD [coronary heart disease] but were depressed when the studies began were more likely to develop or die of heart disease. Depression also aggravates chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, back problems, and asthma, leading to more work absences, disability, and doctor visits.
Now results from a large Norwegian study suggests that depression increases the risk of death from most other major diseases, including stroke, respiratory...

Anne Steenstrup-Duch Teens who drink heavily are more likely than their peers to have behavioural and attention problems and suffer from anxiety and depression, a team led by researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) report in the journal Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health. The data were drawn from a comprehensive, population based cross-sectional survey called Young HUNT. Ninety-one per cent of the youth population in one Norwegian county answered the drinking and behavioural questionnaire as a part of a larger comprehensive health survey of the entire county's population aged 13 and older. Fully 80 per cent of the teenagers said they had tried alcohol, while 29 per cent said they had been drunk more than 10 times in their lives. Boys who dr...
