FDA Warns Novartis Over Flu Vaccine Promotion

The use of language is a subtle art. Ask any regulator. And the regulators at the FDA have determined that Novartis was a bit too subtle, perhaps, in trying to promote its Fluvirin vaccine for the flu. The agency recently issued a warning letter that chastised the drugmaker for distributing a sales aid and print advertisement that were deemed misleading.
Specifically, the promotional materials incorrectly characterized a published recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and implied the Novartis vaccine can be used in all age ranges covered by the ACIP recommendations, according to the FDA letter, which was issued on February 4.
For the current flu season, the ACIP recommended annual vaccination including infants who ...

And so another work week will soon draw to a close. And not a moment too soon. There is much tidying up to do around the Pharmalot corporate campus. Moreover, we look forward to a respite in order to catch up on some reading and tend to the shortest of short people. What about you? Any special plans? Gearing up for vacation, perhaps? Whatever you do, enjoy. And see you soon…

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released its recommendations on the use of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine. Here is my summary of the salient points.
The report begins with information on who is contracting pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza. The median age of persons with laboratory-confirmed infections in the United States is 12 years. The highest incidence of infection is among persons aged 5-24 years, and the lowest is in persons over 65 years of age. Similar findings have been reported in other countries. Comparison of the age distribution of hospitalized persons with laboratory-confirmed novel influenza A (H1N1) also shows a striking difference compared with seasonal influenza, as shown in the figure.

As we have discussed previously, the reduced susc...

The Lancet today published results from a large European study that showed GlaxoSmithKline's Rotarix, an oral rotavirus candidate vaccine to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis, provided protection against the 5 most common rotavirus types. While not yet approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration, the vaccine would enable completion of the rotavirus vaccination schedule by the age of four months. Children hit by a rotavirus experience severe, dehydrating gastroenteritis that results in 1 in 5 affected being hospitalized and most are under the age of six months. The study, a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III clinical trial showed that two doses of Rotarix provided effective and sustained protection through two consecuetive seasons. "The candidat...

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is now recommending that FluMist for children in the 2 to 5 year old bracket. Previously, the nasal spray was only for children over the age of 5.FluMist, by MedImmune, is a nasal spray flu vaccine that is a substitute for the flu vaccine. Approved in 2003 for people between the ages of 5 and 49, the FDA has now approved it for use in children 2 - 5 as well. The Committee did not advocate for FluMist over traditional flu shots but merely approved it as an alternative for children who fear needles. The ACIP also approved that the government extend its coverage to include FluMist. This means those children who are eligible for Medicaid, Native American children, Alaskan Native children and some who don't have insurance will have...
