The first question parents ask about products to help with ADHD, is whether they could actually cure it? The answer is that, unfortunately, there is no cure for ADHD. There are lots of ADHD products. These range from medicines, gadgets, and diets but there are doubts about whether they will actually really be of any benefit to the ADHD child and his bewildered parents. Here are a few tips to help you decide what is right for your child.
Could a homeopathic remedy be one of the products to help with ADHD? Well, according to the Lancet, there is no proven efficacy that homeopathy works at all. Given that homeopathy treats the whole person and acts as a balancing force, it would be difficult to do any test or clinical trials to show that. Some trials have been done but they do not conform to ...

Non Medicinal Treatment of ADHD Looking at the Other Parts of the ADHD Jigsaw

It is surprising how tolerant some parents are about the side effects of medicines for ADHD and also about their long term effects. That is why they never even consider non medicinal treatment of ADHD. It seems that they can turn a blind eye to many kids who are not sleeping properly, having emotional weakness like crying, tics and of course, the worst one of all, a reduced appetite. They seem quite happy with the band aid effect in that their kids are now quieter, calmer, less reckless on the street and in the home and can now do their homework without it taking all day and all night.
But I know many parents who take a much more intelligent approach. First they know all too well that non medicinal treatment of ADHD can get the same results and that there are no side effects. This is true ...

What’s the reason behind this shift in treatment choice away from prescription drugs? Many more parents are becoming aware each day of the dangers of using drugs to treat their ADHD child.
Switching to ADHD natural supplements rather than using ADHD drugs is a better treatment option for various reasons, mainly the potential for dangerous side effects as well as the unknown potential for long-term effects.
The fear of side effects such as psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular problems, and risk of drug abuse gave rise to the advent of ADHD natural supplements. There are a lot of medical experts and parents who prefer to use the natural treatment of ADHD in children. This is very much justified as ADHD natural supplements are much safer than prescription medication, and they are extre...

In this article you’ll learn more about natural versus prescription medicines, so you can make an informed treatment choice for your child.
Most parents do not realize that natural medicine for ADHD has been a treatment choice for decades. This is because pediatricians, psychiatrists and traditionally trained doctors usually prescribe pharmaceutical drugs and these drug companies advertise so heavily in the media and in women’s magazines. Actually, when you finally get the big view picture of the differences between natural medicines and drugs, you will discover why many parents believe they are more effective than the drugs that t...

They say that some lifestyle changes when treating ADHD in children can really make a difference. We could extend our definition of alternative medicine for ADHD to include these. Let me give you just one example. Did you know that if a youngster texts or uses the computer a lot before bedtime will suffer some pretty nasty side effects the next morning?
Those side effects are simply a worsening of his ADHD symptoms and some parents might be blaming this on the meds. It is not the medicine but just the computer screen which tricks the brain into thinking it is daytime. The result is poor sleep and the next day, the ADHD symptoms of restlessness, and lack of attention are there for all to see. These are the findings from a study at the JFK Medical Center in Edison in New Jersey.

Medicines For ADHD Trying To Find The Right Balance When Looking For Safe Alternatives

The problem with medicines for ADHD is that they are now regarded with some suspicion. That is, of course, justified in that they come with a whole range of side effects and the long term risks for our health seem like a skeleton in the cupboard. They are never mentioned!
So, are these medicines for ADHD any use at all? Yes, they are very beneficial for providing some relief of ADHD symptoms but really, they are limited to that. Hyperactivity, distractability, inattention and impulsivity can all be kept under control, to a certain extent. Unfortunately many people still do regard them as a cure-all and that is the problem.
The main defect in that argument has now been demonstrated very clearly in that the effects of these medications, mostly amphetamines, tend to wear off after three years...

If you, your child, or someone else you care for has been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), you’re probably feeling a little overwhelmed. After all, this is a diagnosis that’s going to affect your whole life, whether you have the disorder yourself, or you’re living or working closely with someone who does. And the most popular methods of dealing with it – primarily through drugs – don’t really help, either.
You may be wondering if drugs really are the only option, or if ADHD can be treated using other methods. The good news is that yes, there are other options. ADHD natural medicine can be used to help you improve the quality of life for yourself or a child with this problem, without having to resort to the pharmacy.

When we look at alternative medicine for ADHD, there is a startling variety and it is sometimes difficult to see the wood for the trees. We have a fantastic choice which ranges from Bach flower remedies, herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupuncture, meditation and behavior therapy. You could say it is anything which is not allopathic conventional medicine. For the purposes of this article, I want to concentrate on behavior therapy and homeopathy as they have given the most promising results in many trials with ADHD children and are gaining both popularity and respect as the best alternative medicine for ADHD available now.
There is a lot of debate and controversy on homeopathy. The medical establishment has long taken a hostile stand against homeopathy largely because it is using natural ingre...

Effective Alternatives to Medicines For ADHD

Medicines for ADHD have been a cause for much controversy and there continues to be great debate over the efficacy of standard stimulant based medications. Since most standard medications carry serious side effects, there is very real cause for concern. Fortunately for patients and their families, there are other options available which offer safe treatment and long lasting results.
ADHD can have a wide range of symptoms including hyperactivity, lack of concentration, inability to focus and physical tics. Because ADHD can vary from patient to patient, using a traditional ADHD med to combat symptoms can be a difficult choice. Since most traditional medications treat the surface symptoms, not every medicine will work the same for each patient and none of them may be wholly effective...

Certainly the biggest concern for most parents of ADHD children is finding the safest and most effective treatment method possible. One would think that once the initial diagnosis confirmed the presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder the path would be clear cut from that point on. Sadly, this is not the case.
There are truly as many different treatment options, including alternative medicine for ADHD, as there are symptoms. The primary symptoms are inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity followed by a long list of secondary symptoms including anticipation of failure, worry, boredom, loss of motivation, frustration, low self esteem, sleep disturbances, and hopelessness. There is also the concern of overlapping conditions such as OCD, bi-polar disorder, learning disorders, a...

Although ADHD used to be considered a disorder of childhood, follow-up studies indicate that between 30% and 60% of children with ADHD continue to experience symptoms and impairment in adulthood. And, even when ADHD symptoms decline over time, many individuals continue to experience significant impairment in important areas of functioning.
For example, children with ADHD have poorer academic achievement as adolescents compared to their peers and this trend continues into adulthood. Research pertaining to occupational functioning is limited but available data clearly points to poorer employment histories in adults with ADHD. Predictors of occupational outcomes in individuals with ADHD have not been carefully investigated, however.

Have you read about the whole question of ADHD and natural medicine? Natural medicine is NOT regarded as complementary in the US whereas in the UK, it fits in more comfortably with conventional medicine and there are often medical surgeries which will embrace a whole range of treatments. In that way they can decide what is more suitable and indeed more effective. In this article I want to point out what are the advantages of ADHD and natural medicine so that you are better informed before making any decision about how to treat your child.
Why are psychostimulants the first choice for many doctors? There may be a conviction that it is actually safe and right or there may be a cavalier attitude to this mental disorder which does not take into account the fact that the whole child has to be t...

However, there is some positive news in regards to this. There have been many great strides in the realm of alternative medicine for ADHD.
ADHD natural? Far too much trouble! Much better to let your ADHD child get used to amphetamines from an early age. After all, he/she might need them in college to get through exams. Never mind all the side effects – your child\’s teacher will thank you for it . ADHD psychostimulant medication (Ritalin, Vyvanse and Strattera) seems to be winning the battle against ADHD natural medicine. However, ADHD natural has one great advantage over the ADHD meds and that is that there are no side effects and there is no risk at all of addiction!
I know teachers who insist on children being given Ritalin. But studies show that Ritalin can lead to stunted growth and weight loss. I know of several children who pleaded with their parents to be taken off the ADHD meds after two years because the...

Relaxed parenting? If this seems like Utopia, read on. It may not be so far fetched as you think especially if you are looking into the area of natural medicine for ADHD. This area of treatment has often been overlooked or scorned as conventional medications are now prescribed in millions across the western world. It is hard for ADHD and natural medicine to get a look in but it is an area which has many opportunities to give us the chance to experience more relaxed parenting.
Relaxed parenting is possible Relaxed parenting for me, simply means having routines in place and that these are adhered to as far as possible. We also have some system of rewards and consequences and behavior charts as well. Once these are in place, parenting becomes a little easier because everyone in the family is...

What facts should you take into account when you or your child is experiencing problems with ADHD medications?
Few would argue that once a child is diagnosed with ADHD some form of treatment should be implemented. But the question for parents, and ADHD adults alike, is what form of treatment provides the best balance between side effects and results?
This is not easy questions to answer, especially when talking about prescription medications. Whether it is the irritability sometimes associated with stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall, or the grogginess/sleepiness sometimes seen with Strattera, or the failure of the extended release varieties of medications such as Concerta to deliver consistent result throughout the day, it seems all of our prescription options have some concerns.

If you have a child who is being treated for symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you probably wonder if it is possible to find ADHD meds without side effects.
While there are some ADHD medications with less side effects than others, it is difficult to treat the condition with meds without negative effects at all. The most common medications used to treat ADHD include Aderall, Strattera, Ritalin and Concerta. Many children experience one or more side effects from these medications. Common side effects include nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, stomach pain, nausea, headache, abnormally fast heartbeat and dry mouth.
The symptoms of ADHD interfere significantly with a child’s academic and social skills. Children with ADHD have difficulty concentrating, are often no...

Ever wonder how medicines for ADHD might affect your child? Read on and get the scoop on what’s currently being prescribed as well as the side effects involved.
Studies show that children with ADHD lack sufficient neurotransmitters in the brain. This deficiency is responsible for the characteristic inattention and lack of focus in ADHD patients. These neuro chemicals include dopamine, serotonin, norephinephrine, opioids and gama amino butyric acid, or BAGA for short. The ADHD med serves to replace the deficient chemicals.
As to the medicines for ADHD, stimulants are usually administered first, and if found to be ineffective or not well tolerated, antidepressants are prescribed. Stimulants are further classified as short, intermediate and long acting medications.
Long acting stimulant...

Most experts now believe that ADHD has both a genetic component, meaning that it can likely be inherited, and a biological component, having to do with neurotransmitter or brain messenger activity in certain areas of the brain. One of the ways to think about ADHD is it is a problem of balance between two important brain neurotransmitters; norepinephrine and dopamine. When too much norepinephrine activity is taking place you feel agitated, and your ability to focus becomes limited to things that are threats or opportunities. When dopamine domina...

Is ADHD medication using psychostimulants more effective than natural supplements? Some of the natural supplements consist of herbal and homeopathic solutions which can be easily administered. They have no side effects so no worrying about ‘crashing’ – ie when the child is subject to a ‘downer’ as the effect of the medication wears off.

Combined therapy seems to be the best bet using behavioural therapy, diet, medication and sensible parenting techniques. Sometimes the latter can mean that doses of ADHD medicine can actually be reduced. This medication has received a barrage of criticism over the years and now parents will no longer accept that psychostimulants are the answer. The side effects are frightening and there is a risk that the children will become...

Can a herbal ADHD remedy really calm my hyperactive kid and help him to focus? The answer is a definite yes but first I want to tell you a few facts about ADHD. The first is that the psychostimulants are, as their name suggests, just that. They stimulate the brain but also the heart. That could be problematical for a child with a heart condition or even some minor cardiac problem.
Millions of kids are on a Class II drug
The second thing to consider before looking at a herbal ADHD remedy is that in the US, there is a very different mindset as regards drugs compared to our European neighbors. Research has shown that an American doctor is three times more likely to prescribe a psychostimulant than his European counterpart.
The alarming part of all this is that millions of children are on Cl...

In Britain, 6,350 prescriptions for ADHD drugs for hyperactive and ADD children are written every week. That is an enormous number and as parents begin to question what IS the best medication for ADHD, more and more conflicting views come to the surface. However we can ask ourselves three basic questions before deciding which road to go down. ADHD new medication has not changed much, in spite of many advances.
First question is what side effects are going to upset my child? Impossible question to answer as every child is different. I know one girl who was on ADHD meds from the age of 6 to 19 and ended up almost anorexic. Many children have decreased appetite and sometimes indulge in binge eating to compensate. Some children are troubled by sleeping problems. I know one 9 year old child who...

Facts on ADHD are not likely to sound like rocket science given that no one knows the exact cause of this mental disorder. Diagnosis is based on questionnaires and rating scales rather than clinical means of diagnosis. It gets worse! The treatment offered by the drug companies is controversial and in many cases do not benefit the ADHD child in the long run. What facts on ADHD can one rely on to get a better idea about the implications for child development?
Facts on ADHD now reveal that there is a vicious circle involved in obesity, hyperactivity and media time. Kids do not play outside in the fresh air but inside with a computer, video game or some other electronic device. We know from anecdotal evidence that some kids play with this media for long periods at a time. This has reached such...

ADHD medication long term effects have been the subject of a heated debate. The sad fact is that while the short term side effects are well known and documented, there is a dark cloud of mystery over the long term effects.
The first fact is that while Ritalin has been on the market for about half a century, there are no long term studies at all to discover what these may be. Well, maybe they exist but they have not been published with the exception of one or two, as far as I know. That is very suspicious, I must say.
The short term effects are bad enough. However, as regards ADHD medication long term effects, we have to be aware of what risks amphetamines may or may not have. As they are still classed as Schedule II drugs, they are strictly controlled and there is a very good reason for th...

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, affects millions of children and adults (up to 5% of children in the US). More and more evidence suggests that brain training may be key to help these individuals. With this in mind, we put together our most recent articles on the topic to a) help you better understand what is going in the brain of a person with ADHD, and b) provide you with up-to-date information on what can be done to fight the disorder and improve the lives of people suffering from it. We particularly thank Dr. Rabiner from Duke University for writing many of these articles.

How to Treat a Child with ADHD
There are three methods of treating ADHD. The first is with prescription drugs. While drugs do work well for some kids, they don’t work at all for others. In fact, they can make children’s symptoms much worse. There are drugs that are stimulants, like Ritalin, and drugs that are non-stimulating. No matter the drug, it’s important to understand that they all have side effects. Some kids are just more sensitive to prescription medications than others. The most important thing y...

Herbal supplements for treating ADHD must be approached with the same caution as that in using ADHD conventional medication.

FDA Warnings

When the FDA in 2006 told pharmaceutical companies to put warning labels on ADHD medicines, alarm bells started sounding in many parents’ heads. There ARE potential health risks and these can range from stunted growth, insomnia, mood swings and even cardiac arrest. It is a fact and if you do not believe me, try visiting the FDA site for a horror trip through the psychostimulant drugs jungle. Another alarming fact is that US doctors are three times as likely to prescribe these drugs than their...

Your absolute first step with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) before considering medication and ADHD treatment is to ensure a proper assessment and diagnosis.
Why is this so important?
There are a number of variances within ADHD and other medical conditions that share symptoms. It is extremely important to know exactly what you’re dealing with before you seek treatment. It’s like treating the common cold with antibiotics – they don’t have any effect and the cold won’t go away, likewise you’ll be putting things in your body that you simply don’t need. However, with ADHD an inaccurate diagnosis and mistreatment has much more significant risks because ADHD doesn’t go away like the common cold. ...

Saying my ADHD son doesn’t wake up well would be like saying Old Faithful is a pretty big geyser. This child, age 10 and with severe ADHD, wakes up like a rock.
Morning has always been a difficult time for us, even before the ADHD diagnosis. He whines. He grumbles. He shrieks. He goes back to bed. It’s like having two of me in the house!
I have come up with a morning routine that takes into account his ADHD and the fact that he’s not only tired and grumpy but hasn’t had his ADHD medication yet. This routine might not work for everyone, but maybe you can use it as a starting point for a routine with your ADHD child. The main thing, I think, is to have a routine.
Before I wake my ADHD son, I start the shower and put his clothes on the bed where they’re easy to f...

Before, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for college students is hard to deal with. Not only that severely affects the academic performances and skills of the students but it also presents constant and hard challenges in the daily college life of a student. However, advancements in technology and research paved way to what are now classified as effective treatments of ADHD. But behind this effectiveness are some problems and issues that come alongside ADHD medicine.

Before parents would start administering ADHD medicine unto their students, they should first consider acquiring sufficient information from the particular drug apart from the doctor’s strict supervision, of course. In most cases, the use of these drugs is like a trial and error. Different drugs may have differ...

ADHD disorder has now reached epidemic proportions in America and Europe is not far behind. According to U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD is ‘one of the most common neurobehavioural disorders of childhood.’ The only consolation is that Europeans have a slightly different conception of ADHD disorder and tend to treat it less with psychostimulants. The burning question is if we are using the ADHD label to give our failure as a society to rear our children, a certain legitimacy?
The first misconception is that it is not really a disorder or certainly not a mental illness. It is just children behaving very badly. But children with ADHD disorder have brains which are about 3% smaller than normal children and certain neurotransmitters are defective. This affects t...

Your behavior counts too! The way a parent deals with an ADHD child’s behavior is going to impact on that child for the rest of their life and will deprive them of or provide them with time management skills, social skills and self-control. ADHD medicines cannot do that! ADHD behavior therapy is now regarded by prestigious bodies such as the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) as an essential part of any ADHD treatment program. Simply put, ADHD behavioral therapy is learning a whole set of skills which will help the ADHD child to change his behaviour(for the better!). Parents who have completed a course in behaviour therapy now are seeing results and there are many cases where ADHD medicine can even be reduced.

Why do you think Ritalin is called ‘kiddies’ coke’? Because it is drug based on a type of amphetamine which is known as methylphenidate. As an amphetamine that means it is a Schedule II controlled substance and is available only on prescription and its use is tightly controlled (in theory). Forgive me if I laugh as we now know that it is widely abused by teenagers and adults. ADHD medicine long term effects have been studiously ignored by the manufacturers. They do admit though this drug can lead to dependency although other studies hotly deny that ADHD children who have been on Ritalin and other drugs have no more probability of ending up as drug users as normal kids. This is just one in a long list of ADHD medication long term effects.
Whatever the truth, I, personally ...

I should start by saying my ADHD son is only ten, and the battle might start in earnest at any point, but so far we have not had major conflicts over taking his ADHD medicine. Twice he’s spit it out, both times within about a month at about 8.5 years old. Both times I invoked some mild punishment and sat him down for a talk, and it hasn’t happened since.
I have some tips that I think have helped in our house, and might help you with ADHD medicine routine problems.
1. Make sure your ADHD child knows what the medicine does. My son sometimes asks, when he’s having a bad day, ‘Have I had my medicine today?’ He knows the medicine controls his ADHD impulsivity and distractability and helps him focus and be sociable. We’ve discussed this many times, in varying...

Is there really such a thing as ADHD natural medicine? Is it safe and effective? Before I answer these questions in this article, I want to point out that some 36% of Americans are turning to holistic/natural remedies to have a better quality of life. Millions of dollars are spent on ADHD conventional medications and it is an enormous business for many drug companies, despite the FDA warnings which seem to pop up every month.

Long Term Effects Of ADHD Drugs

The startling fact is that the long term effects of psychostimulant drugs have never been studied and yet they are prescribed for children in ever increasing numbers. People also argue that long term effects of natural medicine have not been studied either so they ask what is the big deal? The truth is that if there were nasty side ...

Can you really succeed in raising a happy well balanced child by treating ADHD without medicine? This is the question that many parents have been forced to ask themselves, given the general alarm and discontent with the present psychostimulants (Ritalin, Vyvanse and Adderall) on the market to-day.
They are also beginning to ask awkward questions which the pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to answer. Let us look straightaway at the Center for Children and Families at the University at Buffalo where ADHD and other disorders have been studied and researched for many years now. The researchers here will help provide some of the answers to get us through the ADHD jungle.

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurobehavioral syndrome, which could be manifested as hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. People with ADHD lean to miss details and are generally averse to tasks that need decisiveness, organization or concentration that is why ADHD treatment is recommended.
Pharmaceutical ADHD Medicines:
Medicines for ADHD include amphetamine-based stimulants, non amphetamine stimulants, non-stimulants, neuroleptics drugs, antihypertensive drugs, mood stabilizers and antidepressants. The most common ADHD medicines are not without side effects however.

Here is a fairly typical story about medicine for ADHD. The child is 11 years old and he has been on a wide range of psychostimulants such as Concerta, Adderall, and Ritalin and also tried Focalin. The medicines worked in reducing hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour and he was doing well at school. Only problem was that the child’s character changes completely – he is withdrawn, will not respond, very irritable and depressed. When he crashes it is even worse as he becomes more anxious and almost suicidal and is obsessed with his death. Take him off his ADHD medicine and you have a normal, chatty and happy child but he is a pain in the neck and gets nothing done. Now you can see why I have used ‘two edged sword’ in the title. This poor child has been on medicine fo...

The popular ADHD drug Strattera which is now widely prescribed in Australia and America has had a mixed press. The two most serious side effects from Strattera are connected with possible liver damage and also some neurological problems. Ironic, isn’t it, that we are talking about neurological side effects of a drug used to cure a mental disorder!
It is strange (and a little disturbing) that doctors and pharmacologists are not quite sure how Strattera works ! What we do know is that it can increase levels of dopamine in the brain which determines not only our mood but also how we make decisions which control our impulsivity and improves our concentration.
Strattera has some advantages over the other ADHD drugs in that it is NOT a psychostimulant and therefore is not classed as Class ...

Given that approximately eight out of every hundred children between five and eighteen are likely to have ADHD, there is rising concern about ADHD medicine. Apart from the side effects which are well known, there is a lot of worry among parents that these drugs may be misused by their children or passed on to their classmates.
Adderall, one of the drugs most commonly prescribed is very popular as a study aid. Then there are all the risks of teenagers wanting to get high. That is why Adderall can fetch up to $15 a tablet on the school parking lot. This activity is known as ‘pharming’.
Other shocking figures reveal that about 10% of teens have admitted that they abuse medicines and this is mostly ADHD medicine. The temptation to use these drugs to get high, cram for exams and get...

Herbal ADHD medicine is attracting a lot of interest nowadays and we can see why. The whole philosophy of the idea that pills teach skills is coming under fire. More and more research shows that this is only a stop gap really in the treatment of ADHD.
Parents often ask about what are the alternatives to the ADHD meds which are very powerful drugs. These are psychostimulants such as Adderall and Concerta and nobody knows exactly how they work on a child’s brain neither do they know what the long term effects could be on the child’s mental development. That is why parents just do not want to know anything else about these meds and are looking at herbal ADHD medicine with a lot of interest and curiosity.
We just need a type of medication which can make children stop squirming, cha...

Thousands of parents are now looking with a lot more interest at ADHD natural medicines. What are the reasons for this? First they are tired of the warnings about ADHD meds, the cases of sudden deaths and the evidence that it stunts growth and ruins sleep patterns. These are the side effects of the ADHD meds and they have been exaggerated or played down depending on which lobby you are supporting.
The ADHD meds such as Ritalin, Adderall and Strattera are all based on amphetamines and they really do have a positive effect on ADHD symptoms. Nobody can deny that and we know that hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity are all controlled. The problem is that they just diminish the symptoms a little and their long term efficacy and risks are all under a lot of scrutiny now.
Reliance on ADHD ...

Just what the doctor ordered! Very often parents think that ADHD medicine will be the solution in dealing with a hyperactive child suffering from ADHD. That is just the tip of the iceberg because the harassed parent is often unaware that nutrition and certain behavioural therapy can work in tandem with medicine for ADHD to help the child through this difficult period.

A Drugged Nation?

We certainly live in a strange era – the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending that in certain cases of obesity in children (as young as 8 years old!) statins can be prescribed for lowering their cholesterol. That is an alarming reflection on the failure of nutrition programs at home and at school. Adults have jumped on the psychostimulant drug wagon and we now know that academics,...

The Difference Between Herbal and Conventional Adhd Medicine

ADHD is defined as a neurobiological disorder characterized by age-inappropriate features of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Research has shown that the disability tends to affect more boys than girls. ADHD is assumed to be caused by genetic factors but there is no empirical evidence to date that would point to the real cause of this condition. What is apparent though is that cases of ADHD have continued to rise by 3% to 5% in school-age children. As parents and teachers struggle to deal with this phenomenon, different methods are being tested and implemented. One approach deals with the use of ADHD medicine to help manage if not to treat the disorder.
An ADHD medicine come in two forms. One is the traditional medicine that is prescribed by doctors and the other is alternati...

We are going through a sort of emergency health crisis as regards the over prescription of ADHD meds without knowing or caring too much about ADHD medicine long term effects. A big problem is the mindset of parents, teachers and doctors who all want a quick fix to behavior problems in children and all the better if it has the ADHD label. It is trendy and it can explain a host of symptoms. Unfortunately the teacher has a mindset where he or she wants to keep the class under control. The doctor is rushed off his feet and may stand to gain by prescribing these ADHD meds. The parent also wants a quick fix and drugs seem the easiest option.
But when we look at ADHD medicine long term effects, the picture begins to darken and there are some worrying thoughts to plague our dreams and uneasy sleep...

Like medications for any other mental or physical condition, medications for ADHD can also have some side effects.
Unfortunately many doctors are not properly trained on ADHD in medical school. For example, here in Vancouver BC Canada, UBC medical students only get one hour on ADHD. So unless they went out to learn more about ADHD on their own time & dime, many aren’t that familiar with the condition of ADHD, let alone the medications which are one of many ways to manage ADHD, let alone how to manage some of their side effects.
Ideally, your doctor will tell you about the possible side effects of ADHD medications, how to manage them, and realistic expectation (pills won’t teach skills), but if they don’t, here are some tips from WebMD. O...

It’s been a rough week for kids and young adults with ADHD — attention deficit disorder. Attention deficit disorder is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Someone with ADHD has a hard time focusing and concentrating on work or school work, often finds it difficult to sit still and concentrate in meetings or classes, and will often act in an impulsive manner that they later regret. It’s estimated that between 3 to 9 percent of school-aged children and young people suffer from ADHD.
First came news on Monday that a significant portion of college campuses’ health services do not offer a way for their students to be treated for ADHD with medication. Attention deficit disorder can be treated successfully a number of different ways, of course, a...

How To Learn About Controlling ADHD Without Medication

The first thing to learn about controlling ADHD without medication is that a multidisciplinary approach is by far the best way to cope with ADHD in children. In Northern Ireland, the Education Minister has granted £2.5m to the setting up of the Pupil Emotional Health and Wellbeing (PEHAW). A similar programme exists in Scotland called the Mental Health First Aid Programme. Lots of teachers and parents are aware of child protection issues but when it comes to mental health problems like autism and ADHD, there is a severe shortage of knowledge.
The second thing to learn about controlling ADHD without medication is that medication itself cannot solve ADHD problems or even treat it in an adequate way. The most commonly prescribed drug is Ritalin whose main component is methylphenidate which i...

If you were to ask a doctor, paediatrician on the best way to define ADHD, you would probably get quite a few varied responses. There might be an ADHD definition as a mental disorder which should be treated as a mental illness and therefore the use of antipsychotic drugs would be perfectly acceptable. Nobody can agree or knows the cause of the disorder, the diagnosis is sometimes vague and the treatment of this condition has led to fierce arguments among child carers, teachers, parents and doctors.
One of the main problems is the actual diagnosis of this condition which is also why it is so hard to define ADHD! Brain scans on a massive scale are advocated by ADHD expert Dr. Amen. Others claim that there is no great difference in the brain scans of ADHD children and those of normal children...

Is there a difference between ADD and ADHD? ADD and ADHD disorders are usually lumped together as one disorder, the only difference being that ADD is sometimes used to distinguish those children who have the inattentive type while the hyper and impulsive kids usually get the ADHD label. In some of the older manuals used by doctors,ADD and ADHD disorders were one and the same thing.
If we are still using the ADD label or (ADHD Inattentive type) as it is most commonly called these days, these children frequently are spaced out and have a lot of problems in finishing a task and may flit from one task to another. These children are daydreaming types as well and often do not cause any behavior problems at school. It is for this reason that because they do not disturb the class, they are often n...

Planning on attending college or university in the fall, but also grapple with attention deficit disorder (ADHD)? Tara Parker-Pope last week wrote a fantastic article in The New York Times that acts basically as your guide to everything you need to know if you have ADHD and are planning to head off to school in the fall.
It explains that while medications may need adjusting (if you’re on an ADHD medication), your support system is probably even more important. Freshman year is hard enough for most people, but even harder for teens dealing with attention deficit disorder. Your safe family and friends you’ve known often leave if you go away to school, and you can be stuck without that support system in place.
In addition to talking about medications (and where/how you’ll g...

8 Years. Count em. Almost a decade. It has been used off label for quite some time, but now it’s “officially approved” by the FDA as medication for adults with ADHD.
