I thought I read the final chapter in the tale of Pfizer’s shady marketing practices for Neurontin years ago. Sadly, there’s at least one more chapter to go.
Recall that in 2008, leaked documents from a US District Court revealed that Pfizer had covered-up the results of a clinical trial which showed the drug didn’t work for chronic nerve pain, even as it promoted off-label use of the anti-seizure drug for that purpose. The next year, it was revealed that Parke-Davis (now a subsidiary of Pfizer) took advantage of lax disclosure policies by certain medical journals to publish 13 articles promoting off-label use of Neurontin that were ghostwritten and funded by the company without disclosing such arrangements.
Now, it has come to light that Parke Davis’ marketing department sponsored...

By Daniel GriswoldIn a speech today at Georgetown University, President Obama called for a goal of cutting America’s oil imports by one-third within a decade. Like all efforts to wean Americans from big, bad imports, such a policy will mean we will all pay more than we need to for the energy that helps to power our economy.
I’ll leave it to my able Cato colleagues to dissect the president’s proposal in terms of energy policy, but it terms of trade policy, this is about as bad as it gets.
We Americans benefit tremendously from our relatively free trade in petroleum products. Like all forms of trade, the importation of oil produced abroad allows us to acquire it at a price far lower than we would pay if we had to rely more heavily on domestic oil supplies.
The money we save buying oil ...

By Michael F. CannonDuring the debate over ObamaCare, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services took issue with some of the things that some of the insurers participating in the Medicare Advantage program were telling their enrollees about the legislation. The Government Accountability Office has just released a review of CMS’s conduct in that episode:
Although CMS’s actions generally conformed to its policies and procedures, the September 21, 2009, memorandum instructing all MA organizations to discontinue communications on pending legislation while CMS conducted its investigation was unusual. Officials from the MA organizations and CMS regional offices that we interviewed told us they were unaware of CMS ever directing all MA organizations to immediately stop an activity...

What did you do over the weekend?
I spent part of mine watching the 2006 movie Marie Antoinette. It wasn’t the best of the bunch, but it did move me. It got me thinking about a time when women had little power and control over their own lives. When things were decided for you and the world, in general, was chaotic and out of control.
Watching the movie made me grateful for the time that we’re living in now. Yes, it is still chaotic and unpredictable. But for us fortunate ones, we have a lot more control over our emotions, perceptions and our well-being today than we did in the past.
If you’re having some difficulty with getting control over these three, don’t worry because this week’s top posts are all about gaining control of your life. You’ll learn how...

An article in today’s The USA Today titled, “With Many Still in Dark, Groups Shed Light on Health Care Law,” aims to correct misinformation about ObamaCare. Ironically, the article is itself a monument to misinformation.
It begins:
True or false: The new health care law will cut Medicare benefits for seniors. It will slash Medicare payments to doctors. It will ration health care.
In three polls conducted last month, large percentages of Americans answered “true” to each statement. All three are false.
In fact, two of the three statements are 100-percent true.
First, ObamaCare will cut payments to the private health insurance companies that provide coverage to the 20 percent of Medicare enrollees who participate in the Medicare Advantage ...

By Michael F. CannonFactCheck.org says that in an ad purchased with your tax dollars, actor Andy Griffith (a.k.a., the sheriff of Mayberry and Matlock) used a “weasel word” to mislead Medicare enrollees about how ObamaCare will affect them:
Griffith tells his fellow senior citizens, “like always, we’ll have our guaranteed [Medicare] benefits.” But the truth is that the new law is guaranteed to result in benefit cuts for one class of Medicare beneficiaries — those in private Medicare Advantage plans…
[T]he term “guaranteed” is a weasel word — a qualifier that sucks the meaning out of a phrase in the way that weasels supposedly suck the contents out of an egg. It may sound to the casual listener as though this ad is saying that the benefits of ...

By Tom G. PalmerThe professionally ignorant (and I’m thinking here of Lou Dobbs, among others) never “get it” about trade. They think it’s some complex swindle, in which we deny ourselves “jobs,” or that it should be about being “fair” or “balanced.” They don’t see how free trade creates prosperity and peace. I was inspired by the outstanding trade economist Doug Irwin of Dartmouth to explain what goes on when people trade. The challenge was to explain international trade in under 3 minutes. So here’s the result in 2:57: The Great Prosperity Machine.

Bipolar disorder can be devastating… but it doesn’t have to be.
I’m pleased to announce the introduction of Bipolar Advantage, hosted by Tom Wootton and his colleagues. I’m pleased to present this alternative view of bipolar disorder and depression, focused on how it can be used to achieve rather than simply endure. Tom said it best:

The mental health field is plagued with the bigotry of low expectations. Far too many people are talking about “changing the stigma,” while creating the worst stigma of all — the idea that we are not capable of achieving greatness. While their intentions are good, they are doing terrible harm to everyone with a mental condition and those who love and support them. This “can’t do” attitude is rampant in professionals, consum...

Fit teens could be smarter teens
“Researchers from Sweden and USC examined data on 1.2 million Swedish men born between 1950 and 1976 who also enlisted for the country’s mandatory military service. They looked at the participants’ global intelligence scores as well as logical, visuospatial, verbal and technical scores. The greater the cardiovascular fitness, the higher the cognitive scores at age 18. The association between muscle strength and global intelligence, in contrast, was weak.”

Brain-imaging techniques allow researchers to witness the brain’s activity reflected in a rainbow of colors on a computer screen. When brain cells are highly active—working harder—the result shows up as brighter colors on the computer screen. Brilliant reds and yellows indicate brain areas that are most active. In contrast, the blues and greens on a scan show a quieter, less active brain.
What would we expect to find if we examined the brain scans of people with high versus average IQ scores? We might picture the active brain of an Einstein as a hotbed of smoldering colors...

Looks bad for Mom and me.

Mom is currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan via Humana. If the new health insurance reform bill passes in this form, seniors currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage can expect to dig into their pockets for $125 billion.
For more than 40 million senior citizens, questions about plans to overhaul the nation's health care system come down to one word — Medicare.

Bills being considered in Congress look to cut $400 billion or $500 billion from the growth of Medicare over the next decade. About a quarter of those savings would come from something called Medicare Advantage. It's a popular program that allows seniors to choose privately run health plans that offer all the services covered by Medicare — plus extra benefits like dental and vision care.

The agency sent a pair of warning letters to Bayer HealthCare concerning what it calls two “unlawful,” over-the-counter aspirin products — Bayer Women’s Low Dose Aspirin + Calcium (Bayer Women’s) and Bayer Aspirin with Heart Advantage (Bayer Heart Advantage). Here is letter one and letter two.
The products, which contain aspirin with either phytosterols or calcium, are unapproved new drugs that require an approved new drug application in order to be legally marketed, according to an FDA statement. In addition to being labeled for use as a pain reliever, both products are labeled for use in reducing the risks of heart disease. Bayer Women’s is also labeled for use in “fighting” osteoporosis.

Last week, a report in The Annals of Internal Medicine alleged that a key Vioxx study, known as Advantage, was actually a seeding study, which is a common reference to a stealth marketing effort.
The report caused a stir, partly because being able to prove seeding accusations is difficult, but also because Merck has consistently been charged with placing marketing above science in touting Vioxx, which was withdrawn in 2004 over links to heart attacks and strokes. Merck has since settled most US lawsuits for $4.85 billion.
In an accompanying editorial, the editor of The Annals of Internal Medicine, stated the journal was not told the true purpose of Advantage, which compared Vioxx with an older, cheaper pain reliever, naproxen, when it published results indicating Vioxx was better tolerate...

Conclusion: Documentary evidence shows that ADVANTAGE is an example of marketing framed as science. The documents indicate that ADVANTAGE was a seeding trial developed by Merck's marketing division to promote prescription of Vioxx (rofecoxib) when it became available on the market in 1999.Source (Source: PharmaGossip)

This article describes how disclosing a disability may actually be a liability, as colleges could potentially see such students as requiring more work and attention (even if, by law, they are not allowed to consider such disabilities in their application process; they still do).
Once a student has an ADHD label, they may be surprised at how much it follows them throughout school, and even life too. It may even follow them to graduate school, if they choose to go that route, and what was once something used to the student’s advantage may end up becoming a liability on the student’s academic record.
Dr. Fournier’s advice is good, too:

Philip over at Furious Seasons has a great interview with author Tom Wootton about his two books, The Depression Advantage (2007) and The Bipolar Advantage (2005). These are two self-help books that use “accelerated learning techniques [the author] developed as a corporate consultant to Fortune 500 companies” (according to the Amazon blurb). The Amazon reviews are worth the read, as some readers have some reservations about the author.
It’s an interesting interview and the author makes a very important point that we often see lost in the conversation about coping with long-term depression or bipolar disorder. You can learn important lessons from dealing with adversity, which includes any adversity in our lives. I’m not sure I buy into the idea that having a serious...
