You may recall, I have a beef with Madison Avenue ad agencies that keep serving up the same New York actors in television commercials for different illnesses. I take it personally. The woman with cancer also has asthma. The man with arthritis also has erectile dysfunction. I feel bad for them!
Last night the quest by an actor to find work got ridiculous for me as my wife, Esther, and I were watching one of our favorite shows, “Criminal Minds,” on CBS. It was a particularly violent episode where a Bonnie and Clyde-type couple shot their way across Montana and proved to be the sickest of cold blooded killers. As the story develops, both the young man and the young woman were abused as children and their plan becomes to mete out retribution to the parents who ruined their lives.

Harvard’s annual primary medicine conference, Pri-Med East 2010, will move the industry-supported portion of the program off-site, and marketing will be further restricted (advertisements had been allowed in bathrooms, for example.) A Harvard official said the new rules are meant to keep doctors from becoming or appearing as industry marketing agents. (The Boston Globe)

So far, it seems like no one’s really capitalizing on the BP oil spill in the Gulf. We haven’t seen any t-shirts or heard any #1 hits about oil – and if we did, we’d hope the proceeds would be going to those people and wildlife affected by the spill. That’s so gre–wait, what? Spirit Air is running ads that are exploiting the oil spill – and sexist to boot?
Spirit Air’s new campaign focuses on scantily-clad women lounging on beaches, all lubed up and enjoying the sun. The tagline reads, “Check out the oil on our beaches.” So tasteless. Did anyone at the ad agency perhaps think it was too soon, insensitive, or inappropriate to exploit a disaster that killed people, wildlife, and ruined a huge swath of the Gulf of Mexico – and is just getting ...

We have a common enemy and it’s called children obesity. Let us look at the latest statistics for children aged 6 to 11 years old who are overweight:

non-Hispanic whites:16.9% of boys and 15.6% of girls
non-Hispanic blacks: 17.2% of boys and 24.8%of girls
Mexican Americans: 25.6% of boys and 16.6% of girls.

While the majority of the efforts fighting the obesity battle come from health advocacy groups, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations, it is great to know that corporate America also has a social conscience and has joined the battle. Two of these corporate initiatives are described below.
Obesity and advertising

This campaign comprises a series of ads being but up in New York Subway cars and is designed to help New Yorkers see how quickly fast-food calories add up.
Here are the initial set of ads:

“It had never occurred to me that Patrick’s classmates would not somehow intuitively understand that there was more to Patrick than what they were seeing.”

Writes Laura Cichoracki in today’s South Bend Tribune about how her second-grade son Patrick, who has autism, “gained two dozen friends in less than an hour.” A presentation by the Michiana Regional Autism Center about sensory integration dysfunction went, Cichoracki says, a very long way in fostering understanding about her son:

The kids were surprised to learn that Patrick is good at puzzles, knows all of the planets and likes outer space and is a big fan of video games.

Then kids were allowed to ask whatever questions were on their mind, and they had some great ones. They wanted to know why Pa...

Starting Up a Dialogue about the Ransom Notes Ad Campaign

Update: As of this Saturday morning (around 11am EST), the images of the ransom notes have been removed from the New York University Child Study Center’s webpage.

I have never taken a class in economics, or business, or marketing (I am a humanist—a teacher of Latin and classical Greek—through and through). But I know enough to know that even negative publicity is good: However provocative, harsh, and upsetting the message of the “Ransom Notes,” the ad campaign has certainly directed a lot of attention to the New York University Child Study Center. As the Wall Street Journal Health Blog notes, the center’s director, Dr. Harold Koplewicz, has found the “backlash from patient groups” to be “surprising and unexpected.” According to ...

Thanks to a classic World War II ad, we recently learned that Tootsie Rolls are “enriched with Dextrose for quick food energy.”
It turns out that they weren’t the only ones enriched with that miraculous sugar: here’s another classic ad from WWII focusing on Baby Ruth and promising “Speedy Energy” that “helps to speed up activity” and “perk-up spirits.”

“If you cannot find Baby Ruth on the candy counter, remember Uncle Sam’s needs come first with us as with you.”
This ad is from the back cover of Military Comics #40 (Quality Comics, June 1945) and was once again brought to my attention by Bob.

First up, from Kamandi #12 (December 1973), is the “Big Break” we’ve been waiting for all our lives! At least that’s what the ad says, so it must be true. Personally, I suspect that Jim is a drug dealer or spammer and just made up the whole electronics school as a scam, much like those “work from home” websites (send me money and I’ll tell you how!)
Finally, from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #83 (March 1965), comes an ad for Silly Putty. Remember, if your comic book shop doesn’t carry Silly Putty, it must not be a good shop!

Filed under: Breast Cancer, Exercise, Magazines, Cancer Survivors, Thought for the DayI've said it before. Every time I go running I feel like I'm crushing cancer with each and every step I pound onto the pavement. It's exhilarating, knowing I'm doing something good for my body and my soul, knowing every day I run is one more day I've survived a nasty disease. Apparently, others agree.Think about this:A new Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure magazine advertisement features a close-up shot of the bottom of a running shoe. Woven into the tread on the bottom of the shoe are these words: Every step resounds with the satisfying crunch of breast cancer being stomped into oblivion. This is exactly how I feel.Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments (Source...
