Macy and I competed in agility this weekend, and we finally Q'ed. We're in Novice so that means we can lose as many as 15 points and still Q (which is a good thing).
Not only did we Q, but we took first place in JWW -- which means she has finally earned her Novice JWW title. She ran clean and only lost 4 time faults. We also took first place in Standard. That's her first Q in that class.
Two years ago, in August 2008 we started competing and she Qed, in JWW. At the same she got afraid of the teeter. We've been fixing the teeter problem for two years. But the REAL problem was me. My weight.
We tried showing again in October 2008, but I had gained over 20 pounds at that point, and she started running out of the ring. So did Mag...

Feeling in the need of a little inspiration. Then take some time to watch this couple who are not letting age get in their way of having a good time. This impromptu musical interlude took place at the Mayo Clinic last year.

Vaudeville players back in the 1920’s and 1930’s, it’s easy to see that for Fran & Marlo Cowan (married 62 years), the show still goes on.
Learn more about their story here.

100 and Still Working. Retirement Not An Option.

Watching what’s happening on Wall Street and following the politicians as they try to bailout what they are calling a crisis that could have catastrophic results for all Americans and the world, I am starting to have a recurrent dream of living out my ‘golden years’ as a bag lady sleeping under an apple tree.
Retirement might just become a thing of the past. But for some, retirement has never been an option.
Why?
Because they love their jobs too much to give them up.
Case in point - Mildred Heath. She’s 100 years old and still working in a career that she started in 1923 at the age of 15.
And she has no intention of retiring. Working as a journalist what she does and who she is. Commuting the one block from her apartment to the office on an electric scooter, she ta...

Ft Worth Agility trial - Friday

We are doing our first dog agility trial since the end of June.

Quoting my agility instructor: "Marcie was flying!"

She missed the table and the weavepole entry she was going so fast but Qed in JWW.

She took a fourth place in Jumpers, first in about a year.

Then I got real lucky with Maggie in Open Jumpers. She started off without listening to me and took a wrong course. However the judged blew her whistle and stopped us which Maggie took as a correction. We got to restart and she ran a perfect course and took first place.

Our standard course was also good but she just would not listen to me at the table.

All in all, 2 Qs and 2 placements meant for a good day all around and much better than we'd been having.

Marcie had seemed very down last Spring and I was thinkging of retiring her...

Trial Report - Final

Running Maggie didn't go well. First, it was snowing. Maggie is a bit deformed -- she has no outer coat -- and she was freezing. At one cold trial, she stopped and cussed me out for making her run. She actually attempted the JWW course, got ahead of me twice and came back. Wouldn't have been too bad, but she took a jump and you're not allowed off courses. Standard was actually worse, we were whistled off -- she took the trap, and then was on the wrong angle for the A-frame. Four paw rule came into affect -- if they put all four paws on an obstacle and bail, they can't retake it. Even though I didn't call it, we were whistled off. Got in 11553 steps so far, blood sugars have been perfect, came home with a 135! (Source: Living With Diabetes)

Marcie and I ran clean in our second run but were probably way over time.

I was at 135 when I left the truck with her and came off that run feeling low. I tested anmd was at 124 but am eating a bag of goldfish crackers anyway.

I am at 5692 steps and haven't started with Maggie.
