A closer look at the HIV vaccine study results announced recently suggests the vaccine may be less impressive than originally suggested, the WSJ reports.
Researchers said last month that the vaccine lowered the risk of infection by about 31% — a “modest benefit,” they said, but one that was statistically significant, suggesting the finding was not a fluke. Another slice of the data that was not released at the time — one that looked only at patients who received all of their shots as scheduled and had the full sequence of shots before becoming infected — suggested the vaccine was 26% effective, the WSJ reported this weekend. But that benefit was not statistically significant: There was a 16% chance that benefit may have been a fluke, and the cutoff for statist...

AIDS Vaccine Study Results Are Questioned

Questions over undisclosed study results, as it turns out, aren’t confined to companies that make medicines. An interesting piece in The Wall Street Journal reports that researchers from the U.S. Army and Thailand didn’t publicly disclose a second analysis of the first vaccine that provided some protection against HIV, and this analysis suggested the results may have been a fluke.
Why? It showed the results weren’t statistically significant, meaning they may have been due to change and the vaccine may not be effective. The additional data were available to the researchers on Sept. 24 when they announced the results, but they chose not to disclose them, Jerome Kim, a scientist with the U.S. Army who was involved in the study, told the paper.
News of the second analysis was...

Improving Memory with Nasal Spray?

This may sound like a sales pitch, but it’s not. If you’re having problems with your memory, or you want to improve it, then you might want to closely follow the research from this German team of scientists. Published in the journal for experimental biology (FASEB Journal), German scientists discovered that administering a nasal spay containing interleukin-6 improved the memory of it subjects!
According to the paper, Interleukin-6 exerts “neuromodulating influences on the brain, with promoting influences on sleep”. The researchers hypothesized that IL-6 could help consolidate our memories better during sleep, so they administered a nasal spray of IL-6 to test subjects after they read several short stories before bed. The control and test subjects slept and, the next morning...

this was a very thoughtful & (i thought) useful overview looking at the spread of HIV/AIDS as driven by social structures. Dr. Lynne C. Todman, Director of the Institute of Social Exclusion (ISE) at the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, presented it at the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance teleconference call may 27, 2009. Toddman’s point: “Poverty reduction must be at the core of any long-term, sustainable solution to ending HIV/AIDS.” these are the official notes from the session, which also included presentations by Marisa Franco, National Lead Organizer, Right to the City Alliance & Jaime Grant, Ph.D., Director of the Policy Institute at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF)

An excerpt from my piece in the Journal of HIV/AIDS and Social Services
This editorial is based on a short trip I took to South Africa earlier this year.
April 2009

In 2006, then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michele traveled to Kenya, Obama’s father’s homeland where many of the senator’s extended family still lived. The Obamas publicly took an HIV test during their trip, an important moment as sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis, with more than 2/3 of the world’s infections.
For every outspoken leader on HIV/AIDS like Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, there have been as many or more AIDS denialists like South Africa’s former president Thabo Mbeki and his shamefully ignorant health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang who at one time suggested ...

For many years, retroviruses were known to be the cause of many kinds of animal leukemias and hematopoietic tumors. In spite of the high expectation that this would also be true for humans, very little evidence for retroviral involvement in any human diseases was forthcoming. In the late 1970s, however, due to the development of sensitive and specific molecular methods to identify retroviruses and to produce large scale cultures of T lymphocytes, HTLV-I was discovered and implicated as the cause of adult T cell leukemia, a particular and relatively infrequent leukemia prevalent in southern Japan and parts of the Caribbean, and tropical spastic paraparesis, a demyelinating neuropathy similar to multiple sclerosis. The discovery that HTLV-I can be transmitted by breast milk has led to a sign...

The failure of 'classical' vaccines to induce protection to the most important of all retroviruses, HIV, has led to the development of a huge variety of 'molecular vaccines', i.e. vaccines produced using modern molecular biological techniques. Such vaccines range from simple plasmid DNA coding for the genes of choice, through recombinant viruses carrying such genes to engineered bacteria designed to deliver HIV genes to the mucosal immune system. Evaluation of AIDS vaccines has resulted in sporadic successes and many failures and the few human clinical trials have been, at best, negative. However, the relative success of molecular vaccines in combating other retroviral infections and the continuing refinement of HIV/SIV vaccines showing some efficacy suggests that a molecular AIDS vaccine ...

Have you ever wondered what anxiety felt like?
Robin Marantz Henig, writing for The New York Times Magazine, has penned a great (but lengthy) piece about anxiety — that non-specific feeling of nervousness that, for some, can be completely debilitating.
Anxiety differs from social phobia or other kinds of fears, because it isn’t specific to particular situation (like speaking in front of crowds or going to a party). It can attack at any time, for any reason or no reason whatsoever. So while you or I may get butterflies in our stomach the first time before a big exam or presentation, someone with anxiety may have them virtually all of the time.

Anxiety is not fear, exactly, because fear is focused on something right in front of you, a real and objective danger. It is instead a ...

Ryan White funding extended for 30 days
Senate committee passes measure to renew HIV program for four years
By LAURA DOUGLAS-BROWN
Sep 30 2009
The U.S. Senate voted 62-38 late Wednesday to approve legislation that will extend funding to the U.S. government for 30 days after the Sept. 30 end of the current fiscal year. Included is a measure to maintain HIV/AIDS programs funded by the Ryan White CARE Act for the next month.

The U.S. House passed the measure Sept. 25. The legislation buys time for Ryan White, but does not permanently renew funding for the programs. At stake is at least $2.1 billion in funding that props up HIV services around the country, including $72 million that goes to programs in Georgia.
Although the Ryan White Act has bipartisan support in Congress, the legislation, l...

This latest FDA approval would bring relief to more than 7.5 million Americans who suffer from a chronic skin disorder called PSORIASIS, which look like red, thick, scaly patches on the skin. Psoriatic patches, which are usually itchy and painful, are inflamed areas where excessive layers of cells had built up on the skin.

And now, after extensive and extended testing, the FDA has approved ustekinumab (Stelara) for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.
(See amazing before-and-after photos!)
Psoriasis is an auto-immune disease, which means a faulty immune system mistakenly attacks the skin and joints, treating the body like an invader and releasing chemicals that otherwise fight infections and foreign substances.
As bad as it already looks, psoriasis affects more than the skin. The dis...

Measure to continue key HIV funds still must pass Senate
By LAURA DOUGLAS-BROWN
Sep 25 2009, 7:15 PM
The U.S. House on Friday approved a resolution to extend funding for the legislative branch for 30 days, including a measure that continues funding the Ryan White CARE Act, a key HIV/AIDS program.
The continuing resolution must still pass the U.S. Senate, which is expected to take it up next week.

Once the resolution is approved by both chambers, it will enable funding for Ryan White to continue until the end of October. Within that time, Congress must pass legislation renewing the Ryan White Act in order for the program to continue.
At stake is at least $2.1 billion in funding that props up HIV services around the countr...

Medical marijuana collectives’ suit comes as the city struggles to write a new ordinance.
By John Hoeffel
September 23, 2009
A newly formed association of Los Angeles medical marijuana collectives has challenged the city’s efforts to control dispensaries, claiming in a lawsuit that the 2-year-old moratorium is unconstitutionally vague and that the City Council violated state law when it extended the ban until mid-March.
The lawsuit, filed late Monday, is the first to take aim at the city’s attempts to halt the explosive growth in dispensaries. It comes as the City Council’s Planning Committee continued Tuesday to struggle with a permanent ordinance to replace the moratorium.

Court will hear arguments Wednesday on whether it should revive lawsuit that challenged Anaheim ordinance.

SANTA ANA – Do cities have the right to ban medical marijuana dispensaries?
The answer may hinge on a lawsuit being heard today before California’s 4th District Court of Appeal. A group of medical marijuana patients – called the Qualified Patients Association – are appealing an Orange County Superior Court judge’s dismissal of their lawsuit that challenged an Anaheim ordinance that forbids such outlets and makes operators subject to criminal prosecution.

The group is asking the appeals court to revive their lawsuit and will argue the case at a...

Los Angeles City Councilmember Dennis Zine told a standing room only crowd at Tuesday’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee hearing that an ordinance that does not recognize sales of medical cannabis would not work for Los Angeles, but he is worried about creating a policy that violates state law. The Councilmember’s ambivalence is part of the confusion that dominated yesterday’s marathon committee meeting. The PLUM committee voted to continue the debate on the regulations, Zine’s motion for more study into relevant case law, and a progress report from the planning department for another week to allow committee members more time to review the material.

Argentina rules on marijuana use
The supreme court in Argentina has ruled that it is unconstitutional to punish people for using marijuana for personal consumption.
The decision follows a case of five young men who were arrested with a few marijuana cigarettes in their pockets.
But the court said use must not harm others and made it clear it did not advocate a complete decriminalisation.

Correspondents say there is a growing momentum in Latin America towards decriminalising drugs for personal use.
The Argentine court ruled that: “Each adult is free to make lifestyle decisions without the intervention of the state.”
Supreme Court President Ricardo Lorenzetti said private behaviour was legal, “as long as it doesn’t constitute clear danger”.

People with HIV are living longer with the use of antiretroviral drugs, but some of that may come at a cost. Researchers have noticed that certain types of cancers, such as anal, lung, Hodgkin’s, melanoma or liver cancer are more common in this group. People with HIV have a 60% higher chance of developing these cancers than do people who don’t have HIV.
Researchers looked at 66,840 patients who had cancer and did not have HIV and 33,420 who had cancer and did have HIV. The types of cancers the researchers were looking for (anal, lung, liver, etc) were cancers that were considered non-AIDS-defining cancers, unlike a cancer like Karposi’s sarcoma, which is closely linked to AIDS.
The researchers aren’t sure about why the HIV population has the higher risk. While a lon...

Senator Evan Bayh urged the leaders of the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee to extend the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act before the law expires at the end of the month.

Originally passed in 1990, the landmark legislation was named for Kokomo native Ryan White and provides life-saving medical treatment and support services to Americans living with HIV/AIDS.
“Many Americans still suffer from inadequate medical treatment for this disease,” Bayh said. “Ryan White’s brave battle helped change atti...

AIDS researchers are excited about today’s vaccine trial results — not because they think this particular vaccine will be used widely in patients, but because they hope that unpacking the promising but modest study results will lead them to develop stronger, more effective vaccines.
To that end, they’ll be trying to answer a fundamental question: Why did the vaccine protect some people but not others?
To find an answer (or answers), scientists will look closely at the differences between people who got the vaccine and were infected anyway and those who received the vaccine and didn’t get infected, Salim S. Abdool Karim, an AIDS researcher affiliated with Columbia University in New York and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, told the Health Blog.

Research is a wonderful thing, and to wake up to news that some progress has been made toward a vaccine for a disease as terrible as AIDS is encouraging, but the results of a study done in Thialand are quite modest. There were about 16,000 participants in the study within an age range of about 18-30, all HIV negative when they started. About 1/2 were given a placebo, and the other half a mixture of vaccines. About 50 in the vaccinated group eventually got HIV while in the placebo group, about 74 got the disease. Is this a dramatic? I'm inclined to say no, but I'm not a scientist and don't know every detail that goes into a study (a lot of money for sure), so cannot judge. My focus is always more toward prevention.STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) are not something I spend a lot of time...

AIDS Vaccine Trial: Why a ‘Modest’ Benefit Is Notable

If previous trials of AIDS vaccines hadn’t been so disappointing, the results out today from the latest trial wouldn’t seem so promising.
Put another way: The results aren’t particularly strong, as far as vaccines go — the vaccine combination used in the study won’t be able to stop the spread of HIV around the globe. But, given the history of AIDS vaccine failures, any benefit at all is something worth noting.
Over the course of three years, 74 of 8,198 people who received placebo shots became infected with HIV, compared with 51 of 8,197 people who received vaccine. So the vaccine appeared to reduce the risk of being infected by 31%. The statement from NIH, one of the sponsors of the trial, called this a “modest preventive effect.”

I know that most of you have been wondering what you can do to help make sure that the Ryan White CARE Act is re-authorized. God love you, all of you.
The best thing you can do is let your elected representatives know that this is something that you care about. A handwritten note, a very short note, is best. But, you know what? If you don’t have time for that, just call them up. Here’s all you need to know…
Here’s the address and phone number for your president:
President Barak Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
The telephone number for the comment line is 202 456 1111. If you know who you want to talk to, and do not use this line to try to talk to the president, but if y...

Ryan White HIV/AIDS Funding Due to Expire Oct. 1
by Jim Chud
Volume 28 Issue 10

In December 2006, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act of 2006 (RWTMA) became law. The Act replaced the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act that had been initially signed into law in 1990, and subsequently “reauthorized” (renewed) in 1996 and 2000. The CARE Act was the country’s largest federally funded non-entitlement program for people living with HIV/AIDS and forms the core of the local HIV/AIDS care and treatment response in most local jurisdictions. The act sought funding to improve availability of care for low-income uninsured and under-insured victims of AIDS and their families.

The RWTMA included a sunset clause that entails the end of the legislation on O...

HIV/AIDS began its deadly course in the United States mostly as a disease of young men, but today the epidemic touches people of all ages, including adults aged 50 and older. On September 18, the first National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, we pause to recognize the importance of preventing HIV infection in this age group and understanding and addressing the unique health effects of the virus on older Americans.

With people in the U.S. with AIDS expected to live close to a normal life span, the majority of pharmaceutical companies are not developing innovative new long-term treatment options that offer improved efficacy, safety and tolerability.
The ATAC Pharmaceutical Company HIV/AIDS Report Card evaluates the nine largest HIV/AIDS drug-producing pharmaceutical companies in five categories: drug development portfolio and plans, access to drugs, pricing, community relations and marketing practices. The average final grade was a C-. See below for how ATAC ranked each of the companies on the five categories, and view the additional resources for more information.

Posted By Shruti Kalra On September 9, 2009 @ 2:00 pm
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a document of recommendations for HIV infected individuals about the H1N1 (swine) flu. Currently, the CDC does not have any information about the risk of H1N1 flu in individuals with HIV/AIDS.

However, HIV/AIDS infected individuals may experience more severe side effects and complications with H1N1 flu, as evidenced by severe side effects to previous seasonal influenzas. HIV infected individuals are more vulnerable to flu side effects because of the low number of CD4 cells or healthy white blood cells that can fight off infection.

Common signs and symptoms of H1N1 infection are similar to th...

Mark Mascolini
Emergency room patients in Washington, DC, who declined opt-out HIV testing had more than a 2 times higher HIV rate than people who agreed to testing. The most common reason for turning down the HIV test was the belief that they had no risk of infection.

In 2006 the US Centers for Disease Control recommended routine opt-out HIV testing for all adults who seek medical care, including those who visit emergency rooms. Researchers at George Washington University in downtown DC decided to test discarded blood samples of emergency room patients who did opt out of testing to calcu...

this is a special report on last wednesday’s raids of 14 medical cannabis clinics and 6 residences in the san diego area. raids were conducted by a team of federal & county & city law enforcement officials (no representation from the state of california, according to the district attorney’s press release). District attorney Bonnie Dumanis held a news conference the next day, thursday, attempting to justify not only the SWAT-style tactics but also the political timing of the raids, which took place the day after the san diego city council voted 6-1 to create dispensary regulations by early next year.

SWAT-Style Raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in San Diego
Come Day After City Council Acts to Regulate Dispensaries
Patients Condemn Tactics, Express Concern for Safe Access
SAN DIEGO – Several medical marijuana dispensaries were raided in San Diego today, after the City Council yesterday voted 6-1 to establish a taskforce to create dispensary regulations by early next year. Medical marijuana patients and advocates criticized the raids’ timing and tactics.
“These raids are unnecessary and unacceptable. Yesterday the City Council agreed to create local regulations for dispensaries. We could have those rules as early as Janu...

Reports continue to come in of federal raids of medical marijuana dispensaries up and down the West Coast.
San Diego has been hardest hit. In the midst of the trial of the Operation Green RX defendents, on the heels of the decision by City Council to create yet another task force on medical marijuana, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis went on a rampage.

In San Diego 14 dispensaries were robbed and vandalized and 31 people kidnapped, tortured, and held for ransom. The terrorists, led by San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, claim they stole $70,000, 6 guns, and an undisclosed quantity of marijuana. In justification of the robberies, Dumanis states that a single dispensar...

The district attorney is defending this week’s raid on medical dispensaries throughout the county, saying they were simply drug dealers out to make a fast buck.

Authorities say 31 people were arrested in a sting that targeted medical marijuana distributors in San Diego County.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said Thursday that she supports marijuana use for medical purposes - as allowed under California law - but that the distributors may have been operating stores to sell drugs illegally.
No charges have been filed. Prosecutors say possible charges include sale and possession of marijuana and firearms offenses....

Hi, my name is Patti Walker and I am both a medical marijuana recommended patient as well as a former San Diego collective employee.
I was involved in the raids yesterday and my collective was hit pretty bad. I worked at Beneficial Care Collective in downtown San Diego at about 1:30 pm I walked into the office and heard pounding and saw police task force every where. I had no idea what was going on and then an officer pointed a shotgun at my face and told me to sit down, and there I sat.

Myself and everyone else who worked there was then handcuffed and put in a room, they told me it was just procedure and I wasn’t in any trouble just caught up in something really. About 30 min later they told me and the other employees were being arrested and charged with felony sale of marijuana.

I am also an Iraq war veteran that has honorably and voluntarily served our country in the United States Marine Corps for over seven years. I know the meaning of sacrifice. I understand struggles. Most importantly I have witnessed first-hand how the war on terrorism has affected our military members. I have seen what happens to my brothers and sisters in the military medical system, Marines, sailors, and soldiers get pumped full of prescription medications. One med is for this, the other is for that, and the other seven meds help to counteract the side-effects of the first few drugs. This is not to say that they are not getting the care t...

SAN DIEGO — Multi-agency law enforcement teams raided medical marijuana dispensaries across the San Diego region Wednesday.
Personnel from federal, state and local departments served warrants at an undisclosed number of cannabis-dispensing storefronts in various locales in the county, according to Monica Munoz, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Police Department.

Authorities refused to release details — including the reason for the raids and the number of related arrests, if any — about the operation, which apparently began around midday and targeted dispensaries in several San Diego beach communities, among other areas.

by Eric Wolff
September 9, 2009
The San Diego Police Department and other county law-enforcement agencies are conducting a sweeping raid on marijuana dispensaries this afternoon. As of this writing, CityBeat has heard that Green Kross Collective, Total Care Collective, San Diego Discount Caregivers, Hillcrest Compassionate Care, Downtown Kush lounge, Top Quality Collective, Medical Cannabis Providers, and Nature’s Rx Collective have been shut down (We will updates this list as we learn more) by the San Diego Police Department and their owners arrested if they were present. Sources tell CityBeat that the owners have been given 48 hours to provide proper paperwork for their shops, but everything is very tentative at the moment....

Authorities Raid Local Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
September 9, 2009
SAN DIEGO — Multi-agency law enforcement teams raided medical marijuana dispensaries across the San Diego region Wednesday.
Personnel from federal, state and local departments served warrants at an undisclosed number of cannabis-dispensing storefronts in various locales in the county, according to Monica Munoz, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Police Department.
Authorities refused to release details — including the reason for the raids and the number of related arrests, if any — about the operation, which apparently began around midday and targeted dispensaries in several San Diego beach communities, among other areas.

The Ryan White CARE Act- What’s new from Reauthorization?
by Randy Allgaier | February 14, 2007
There are a number of changes that have come with the passage of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act of 2006. . The structure of the legislation has not been altered. September 6th, 2009

Too soon for complacency in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) has recently stepped up enforcement against medical cannabis dispensing collectives in the city, and there is reason to believe that this may be the beginning of a new trend. Americans for Safe Access (ASA) is encouraging patients and providers to prepare in advance for a possible confrontation with local police. Taking some simple precautions in advance and knowing what to do during an LAPD raid can preserve your rights and keep you out of serious trouble.

For 40 years, federal marijuana studies have been conducted in one place — the University of Mississippi. Contracts should be awarded to several different institutions.

When the federal Department of Health and Human Services recently issued a request for proposals, seeking competitive applications for the production, analysis and distribution of “marijuana cigarettes,” the request might have seemed a bit unusual to those unfamiliar with Washington’s dance around cannabis research.
Researchers have identified a new strain of the HIV virus. This time, the virus first came from gorillas. In the past, the strains have originated with chimpanzees. This discovery confirms that both animals are likely sources of HIV.

The new strain is called RBF 168, and was first found in a woman, aged 62, who had moved to Paris from Cameroon, a nation in Africa. The woman said she did not have contact with apes or bush meat, which would mean she probably got the virus from another human.
Despite this new strain, experts says it’s not likely to cause an increase in the number of AIDS cases each year.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which greatly influences American policies and practices abroad. In the last week, HIV/AIDS and LGBT rights organizations (including AIDS Action Committee) sent two letters to Sen. Kerry urging him to adopt LGBT rights provisions in a pending Foreign Relations Authorization Bill, which influences the State Department among other things.
The letters emphasize the ongoing connection between gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and the growing AIDS pandemic, especially in countries that generally deny homosexuality and/or criminalize homosexual behavior. While epidemiologists have long known that the heterosexual transmission of HIV has been greater in countries outside of Europe and North Ame...

Findings May Point to New Avenues for Treatment, Prevention
A team led by researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today reported the discovery of five genetic variants related to blood pressure in African-Americans, findings that may provide new clues to treating and preventing hypertension. The effort marks the first time that a relatively new research approach, called a genome-wide association study, has focused on blood pressure and hypertension in an African-American population. At THRIVE! Let’s see…
1. The candidate promised to lift the ban.
2. The White House Web site reaffirmed the president’s commitment to lifting the ban.
3. The White House Web site no longer reaffirms his commitment to lifting the ban.
4. The president now refuses to lift the ban.
5. The president actually affirmatively makes things worse by administratively supporting defending the ban.
6. The spokesman reiterates the president’s support for lifting the ban, some day, once Congress gets around to it.

Here’s a recent video of author John Marks being interviewed on The Bully Pulpit. It’s a great way (if you’ll take the 45 minutes or so to watch) to get a sense of where he’s coming from in his book and why I was so fascinated by it.

RH Reality Check has a heart-stopping headline on a sensitive topic: How Are Your Orgasms, Mom?
…
Whew, have you recovered yet?
I’m just being a little silly because the idea of older adults – even our parents – having sex is an idea that most of us would probably rather avoid. Hey, I joke when I’m uncomfortable – you? It’s certainly not something many of us (in my estimation) have gotten comfortable thinking or talking about. That’s why the above-linked post is so awesome.
The post, by Ann Whidden of the National Sexuality Resource Center, begins:
My mom turns sixty-nine this fall, and she recently asked if I could turn my communications expertise to a more familial project: updating her personal profile on a popular dating site. As she gea...

HIV Rates Increasing In Salt Lake County, Utah
http://dailyreports.kff.org/Daily-Reports/2009/June/29/HIV-062909-Utah-Rates.aspx
HIV rates have been steadily increasing over the last three years in Salt Lake County, which includes Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, according to the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, the Deseret News reports. Health officials contend that lack of awareness of HIV, personal concern about becoming infected and sexual health discussions — especially among young adults — are driving the increase. Preliminary data indicate that the trend will continue in 2009, according to health officials. Stan Penfold, the executive director of the Utah AIDS Foundation, said, “Rates grow because there is a lack of conversation around HIV and what the risk...

The stop-smoking market is huge, from the do-it-yourself treatments to alternative medicine to pharmaceutical medicines. Over the past few years, medications like Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban and Wellbutrin (buproprion) have been used by many people, some successfully, some not.
One problem with these medications is that they seem to have an adverse effect on some people who take them and these can be quite serious. According to a press release issued by the FDA:
These symptoms include changes in behavior, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts and behavior, and attempted suicide.
Now, the FDA has told the manufacturers that they must add new warnings, called Box Warning and develop patient medication guides that outline these risks.
Here is more from the release:

http://dailyreports.kff.org/Daily-Reports/2009/June/30/HIV-063009-Condoms.aspx
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is considering expanding an eight-year-old program at Men’s Central Jail that distributes condoms in a unit for gay men, the Los Angeles Times reports. Under the program, an outreach worker from the nonprofit Center for Health Justice visits the jail once weekly to distribute about one condom per inmate to the unit’s 300 inmates. Baca is considering doubling the number of condoms being distributed. Sheriff Department officials acknowledge that HIV is a problem in county jails and spend about $2 million annually on HIV/AIDS medication and identify about 65 new cases of HIV each month, accordin...

Today is National HIV Testing Day. The CDC estimates that 1.1 million adults and teens in the U.S. were living with HIV at the end of 2006. Twenty-one percent of these people had not been diagnosed.A review in the June 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine reports that insomnia is common in people with HIV. Some studies estimate that as many as 70 percent of people with HIV have insomnia at some point during their illness. Research also suggests that HIV may directly lead to changes in sleep.Insomnia can reduce the quality of life of people who are HIV positive. It also can have a negative effect on their adherence to HIV treatment. The review reports that few studies have evaluated insomnia treatments in people with HIV. One study tested a five-week acupuncture interventi...

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like every day this week I’ve seen another story about questionable to outright appalling treatment of pregnant women. One was the case of a woman with allegedly false immigration documents, who learned that she was pregnant and HIV positive. The judge in that case decided to sentence her to prison through her due date (longer than the sentence might otherwise have been), under the rationale that she would receive medical/HIV treatment in prison. Something is really, really wrong when prison is a first, best option for medical care, especially for a pregnant woman. Apparently this decision wasn’t made on behalf of the woman and whatever pregnancy-related care she may need, though, but with an eye toward forcing her to take medications to red...

Fade Skinny: Aims to describe how clinicians use decision aids. Finds that unintended decision aid use in the context of videotaped encounters in a practical randomized trial was common (either by not using it at all or using the decision aid to advance the agenda that all
patients with diabetes should take statin). This offer insights to researchers
seeking to design and implement effective decision aids for use during the clinical visit.

Homeopathy has become boring, so I’ll keep this short.
It’s clear that the public have rumbled the fraud and that homeopathy is heading back to where it was in the 1960s, a small lunatic fringe on the High Street.
All university ‘degrees’ in homeopathy have closed their doors in the last two years.
Even Peter Fisher sounds increasingly desperate in his attempts to defend it.
If it were not for the unconstitutional interference in politics of the Prince of Wales, homeopathy would probably have sunk even further. Princes who meddle like that should be allowed to cool off in the Tower of London. I can’t understand why his mother doesn’t restrain him before he destroys the monarchy altogether.

In 2004 an outbreak of HIV throughout porn performers almost shut down the industry. At the time, “a porn actor spread the virus to three actresses he had worked with and another unrelated performer also tested positive.” Legislation to enforce safer sex practices in the industry never saw the light of day.

Now, officials are once again concerned because the Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Healthcare Foundation confirmed that an actress has tested positive for HIV and yet they will not release the name. Clinic reps from AIM also say the recent HIV confirmation is “not a major event.” Health officials are concerned that the clinic is not taking the matter as serious as it should.

Drug makers have touted the importance of expanding in emerging markets like Russia, China and India to drive growth outside the slowing U.S. market. But one challenge is figuring out how to price drugs in those markets.
A continuing dispute between GlaxoSmithKline and the Russian government over the pricing of HIV medicines illustrates the conundrum for companies of maintaining an acceptable profit margin vs. gaining market share, according to the WSJ.
Russia wants GSK to lower the price of its anti-retroviral medication Combivir by 15%. GSK refuses, saying that such a price wouldn’t be able to support a “viable business model,” according to Glaxo’s general manager in Russia, Fabio Landazabal, reports the WSJ. “Pricing of this level is clearly not sustainable...

Having trouble toilet training the toddler?
Then check out this interesting idea - a musical diaper that triggers a ‘wetting alarm’.
Seriously.
In a study recently published in Neurology and Urodynamics, the participants (young healthy children between 18 and 30 months) in a daycare center were observed for the effectiveness of wearing a diaper with an ‘alarm’ system. Some wore the actual diapers with the actual wetting alarm and others wore diapers with a placebo alarm.
The results - those wearing the ‘wetting alarm’ diapers achieved independent bladder control almost 60% of the time as compared to the placebo alarm group that achieved independent bladder control only 8.3% of the time.
Makes sense really. The ‘wetting alarm’ training method offers both the child and the...

Parents guilty of eczema baby manslaughter

There have been emotional scenes at a Sydney court where a homeopath and his wife were found guilty of the manslaughter of their baby daughter.
Thomas Sam and his wife Manju Sam were convicted over the death of their nine-month-old Gloria.

Thomas and Manju Sam leave the NSW Supreme Court (AAP: Paul Miller, file photo)

The baby girl had severe eczema and died of septicemia in 2002.
After a four-week trial the Supreme Court jury took less than two days to reach its decision.
The Crown argued the couple did not seek conventional medical treatment for their child, instead treating her with homeopathic drops.
The defence argued the couple were not warned about how sick the child was by med...

The Glamour Tour 2009 continues tomorrow as I head off to Victoria, staying at The Empress in the Empress Gold room part of the fancy floor. Inadequate health policies in South Africa have reportedly led to some 330,000 unnecessary AIDS deaths and a spike in infant mortality, according to estimates by South African and US researchers. This carnage exceeds the death toll in Darfur, yet it has received far less attention. Seth Kalichman, a US clinical psychologist, shows in Denying AIDS how words can kill. His marvellous book should be read alongside Nicoli Nattrass’s Mortal Combat, covering similar ground but from the perspective of a South African. The tragic events in South Africa have been exacerbated by AIDS ‘denialists’ who, Kalichman alleges, assert th...

We posted a recruitment notice last week for a VCT nurse.
VCT stands for “voluntary counselling and testing,” as in counselling and testing for HIV. We treat women during labour and babies after they are born to prevent vertical (i.e. mother-to-child) transmission. Our VCT nurses do the testing, do the prophylactic treatment, and refer patients for follow-up because we do not do HIV care outside of the delivery period. Patients need full-service HIV clinics for that.
We’re recruiting for some daily workers, rather than a full-time VCT nurse. Our full-time positions are filled, but we need a pool of trained staff to fill vacations and sick leave.
My name and telephone number are at the bottom of the notice.

The temperature was somewhere between 40 and 50 and that’s not a great environment to provide medical care, to counsel someone or to try and do any sort of work.
Having fun should come naturally. Right?
You simply drive to the closest watering hole, grab a beer with a friend, and bam, you’re there! Except that I no longer drink … which was the only way I knew how to relax. Because liquor became a kind of babysitter for my brain, quieting all the rowdy children in my head so that I could sneak out for a soirée with some friends.
Although I’ve been sober for over 20 years, I still haven’t gotten the hang of chilling out … without any aids, that is.

You’ve heard that old canard. “The dictionary defines marriage as…” Well guess what? What’s good for the goose is now good for the gays. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, that descriptive dictionary born with the american revolution, defines marriage this way:
