Book Review: I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive

Musician Steve Earle made a solo name for himself with Guitar Town and Copperhead Road after playing in legendary country and bluegrass bands as a young prodigy. He was nominated for a Grammy, his reputations soared, he added rock and roll to his range—until 1991, when Earle put out the aptly named live album, Shut Up and Die Like An Aviator. Shortly thereafter, he was dropped by his record label for long-standing drug problems, and landed in prison with a heavy sentence for possession of heroin. He completed rehab successfully, earned his parole in 1994, and has gone on since then to make several highly successful albums, guest star in the TV series The Wire, and write music for the New Orleans-based series Treme.

And now he has wr...

Wouldn’t it be great if we could find a way to prolong our lives and to keep us healthy right up to the end? Ponce de León never found that Fountain of Youth, but science is still looking. What are the chances science will succeed? How’s it doing so far?
In his new book The Youth Pill: Scientists at the Brink of an Anti-Aging Revolution, David Stipp tries to answer those questions. From the title of the book, I expected hype about resveratrol or some other miracle pill, but instead it is a nuanced, levelheaded, entertaining, informative account of the history and current state of longevity research. It makes that research come alive by telling stories about the people involved, the failures and setbacks, and the agonizingly slow process of teasing out the truth with a series of experi...

Chapter 3: 80s Hair Metal
I have this pet theory that the essence of what these here United States are all about can be summed by Van Halen. (Here me out – you’ll kill at the next happy hour.) We talk a big game about freedom, liberty, and democracy, but the most honest quote about our country came from one of its worst presidents, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, when he noted that “the business of America is business.” It took us almost a century to go to war over the idea that black people maybe weren’t property, and that was long after...

Everyone has a few places on this earth they consider special. People get a certain feeling when they are there, like putting on a pair of old comfortable shoes or being plugged into a charge of energy. Memories, emotions, physical sensations - these places stir them all up, creating a divine craving to return often. For me, it’s an old football stadium.
This past weekend I went to the football stadium of my alma mater. It’s just a spring scrimmage, but it’s a Huge Deal every year. This thing is more than just a sporting event. It’s an excuse to “be there”, to bask in the aura and the atmosphere, to get lost inside the experience.
I went to college there, so did my husband, my dad, and so many other people in my family. I was in the marching band, and I...

I can’t imagine a decision more heart wrenching. Your child is born severely disabled and dependent on life support. The time, effort, and emotions involved in making the decision to shut off the life support machines must take more strength than I can every imagine.
What happens though, if parents make such a decision and the hospital goes against your wishes, keeps the baby on life support, and the baby lives - and still lives - but with a severe handicap that will ensure that the baby will never live a so-called normal life.
Parents Marie-Ève Laurendeau and Stéphane Mantha had to make that very decision and the Montreal Children’s Hospital did just that: ignored their wishes.
It actually pains me to write something negative about the MCH. It’s a great hospital and I&...

Readers of SHS will recall the awful case of the baby who survived a late term abortion only to be--allegedly--put in a medical waste bag and literally thrown away. The abortionist already lost his license in the case, and now there has been an arrest. From the story:An abortion clinic owner is accused of delivering a live baby during a botched procedure and then throwing the infant away. Belkis Gonzalez, 42, was arrested Tuesday and charged with practicing medicine without a license and tampering with evidence, both felonies, said Ed Griffith, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office. If found guilty, Gonzalez would face at least a year in prison and up to 15 years.I was pretty outraged that the charges were practicing medicine without a license, etc. I thought they should i...

I wrote yesterday about a terrible 2006 Florida case, in which an infant allegedly survived an attempted abortion only to be put in a medical waste bag by the owner of the clinic. The doctor didn't show up in time--resulting in the live birth of a baby girl at 23 weeks. Well, today he lost his medical license. From the story:The Board of Medicine revoked the license of a Florida doctor on Friday accused of medical malpractice in a botched abortion in which a live baby was delivered, but ended up dead in a cardboard box. The board found Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique in violation of Florida statutes by committing medical malpractice, delegating responsibility to unlicensed personnel, and failing to keep an accurate medical record. The doctor did not kill the baby--well, his pre-abortion tr...

This is an awful, awful story: The photo at left is of a 22-week prematurely born infant. According to the AP--no pro life outlet--a more developed infant survived a late term abortion in Florida only to be put in a plastic bag and thrown out by a staffer at the abortion clinic. From the story: Eighteen and pregnant, Sycloria Williams went to an abortion clinic outside Miami and paid $1,200 for Dr. Pierre Jean-Jacque Renelique to terminate her 23-week pregnancy.Three days later, she sat in a reclining chair, medicated to dilate her cervix and otherwise get her ready for the procedure. Only Renelique didn't arrive in time. According to Williams and the Florida Department of Health, she went into labor and delivered a live baby girl. What Williams and the Health Department say happened next h...

A rebuke to years of off-label marketing by pharmaceutical companies behind closed doctors’ doors was just published in the form of a journal article demonstrating that the use of atypical antipsychotic medications significantly increase the risk of death in elderly Alzheimer’s patients. The biggest risk comes with the longer you’re on the antipsychotic medication:

The antipsychotic drugs [studied] included thioridazine, chlorpromazine, haloperidol, trifluorperazine or risperidone.
The researchers found that, for the whole study period, the risk of death was 42 percent lower among people taking a placebo compared with those taking antipsychotics. […]
But after two years, 46 percent of those taking antipsychotics were alive, compared with 71 percent of those taki...

Barach Obama Apparently Doesn't Know the Difference Between a Fetus and an Infant

Barach Obama has been accused of opposing the Infant Born Alive Protection Act, which requires hospitals and doctors to treat the survivors of attempted abortion. He denies this despite having refused repeatedly to vote for the Illinois versions. This 2001 transcript, pp.86-87, is telling. Expressing a hyper-legalism to avoid grappling with the issue, Obama argued against the legislation, stating: The second reason that it would probably be found unconstitutional is that this essentially says that a doctor is required to provide treatment for a previable child or fetus, however way you want to describe it. Viability is the line that has been drawn by the Supreme Court to determine whether or not an abortion can or cannot take place. And if we place the burden on the doctor, that says you ha...

Heart Failure Pump Developed

A Heart failure pump has been developed to assist those patients awaiting their gift of life. I really do hope that this is a success.
The pump is implanted into the patient’s body and pumps blood from the weakened left ventricle to the rest of the body at the same rate as a healthy heart. In addition to helping 75 percent of patients stay alive for at least six months, or until a donor heart becomes available, the device assists patients’ original hearts regain function, thereby allowing other organs to heal by restoring blood flow.
The device is about the size of a “D” sized battery which will allow it to help patients both big and small and male and female. Pretty cool!
