A Pledge Worthy of a Free People

I’ve long criticized having state school officials lead students in a pledge of allegiance to the state. It runs precisely counter to our nation’s founding principles. Michael Lind has gone beyond criticism and proposed an alternative pledge, more fitting to a free people. It’s definitely worth reading.
Of course a free people deserve a free intellectual and education marketplace, in which parents choose their children’s schools without state interference. Those schools, acting in loco parentis, could decide what, if any, pledges their students recite. They could even chose the current one, if that strikes their fancy. That’s what freedom’s all about. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Kiss the ring! Kiss the ring! Give allegiance to the power and position of its owner. The Godfather will treat you with respect and give you favors… but at a price… yet an offer you cannot refuse. Oh, but wait! Did you notice? This Godfather is wearing lipstick!
As a Hispanic person and a mental health professional, I have observed that just as there are dysfunctions with one person there can also be dysfunctions with a large grouping of those persons, call it a “culture,” a “people,” a “cohort,” or other. In diversity classes we are taught to respect other cultures and not “judge’ them, yet never mind if they eat their own progeny or have sex with young little girls. Implicit in this intellectual doctrine is the rule is that we are to look the other way and not judge t...

The Psychology of Groups

Jeremy Dean over at PsyBlog has a series of articles about the psychology of groups which are the usual great collection of nuggets of insight into how groups work. Why should you care? Because you’re a part of groups throughout different areas in your life — at work, among your friends, even at home. While a lot of the information he discusses applies primarily to groups in a working, school or project environment, there’s still things you can glean from the discussion that can be applied to any group.
Group psychology falls under the purview of social psychology, the study of how individuals within groups interact with one another.
The first article, 10 Rules That Govern Groups, includes common rules taken from research findings on group interactions, such as:

When I say that my son Charlie is “minimally verbal” or “can’t talk too well,” I don’t mean that he just says a few words and then is silent the rest of the day. You can hear Charlie’s voice all the time in our house. Plenty of words are said though what Charlie means by “Jesso doggy Barney tape” is probably not clear to many (if not most) people. Charlie hums and warbles and sings ever-longer snatches and phrases of songs. In the past few months, he often sings the melody of any song he’s heard and, more and more, the lyrics too. Today it was something by Van Halen after hearing it on the radio; at school, after another student sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” after the Pledge of Allegiance over the loudspeaker, C...
