– I remember reading probably, 25 years ago, an article in the "health" section of a magazine that claimed we're all getting ill because of the impact fecal matter in our colons. 10 kilos of the stuff, clogging us up, making us sick, causing joint pain and dulling the mind…gettting rid of it through detox and/or colonic irrigation will make you well. It's all bullsh, of course as any colon surgeon will tell you. The bottom line is that in medicine, “detoxification” has a specific meaning, and alt-med “detox” believers have appropriated the term for something that has little or nothing to do with its real medical meaning. Alt-med detox has more to do with exorcism and bad humors than real medicine. Squirting warm water up your backsid...

I can’t speak for anyone else who blogs here at Science-Based Medicine, but there’s one thing I like to emphasize to people who complain that we exist only to “bash ‘alternative’ medicine.” We don’t. We exist to champion medicine based on science against all manner of dubious practices. Part of that mandate involves understanding and accepting that science-based medicine (SBM) is not perfect. It is not some sort of panacea. Rather, it has many shortcomings and all too often does not live up to its promise.
Our argument is merely that, similar to Winston Churchill’s invocation of the famous saying that “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried,” science-based medicine is the worst form of medicine except for all the others tha...

Michigan voters legalized medical marijuana last year. Rules for the program went into effect Saturday. In Los Angeles the law remains an obstacle but a federal judge is unhappy with the law. In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is opposed but three Democratic candidates for district attorney have declared in favor of legalization for [...] (Source: psa-rising.com/blog)

Today’s the day we announce the winner for the Live Food Factor book by Susan Schenck. You ready? It’s: Veronica Garrett! Veronica thought the book sounded great, and I must admit, I think the same thing.

I was so intrigued by our interview with Susan Schenck that I did some research and discovered that Carol Alt has been on a raw food diet for about 15 years. And if you’ve seen Carol Alt lately, she looks great! No way does she look close to 50 years old.
In reading an interview with Carol, I was surprised to learn that a raw food diet isn’t necessarily a vegan diet. I think that’s one reason I always shunned it. She also said that she eats like a football player (hard to believe) and that the diet cured her of many things like allergies and acid stomach.

Music therapist Megan Gunnell at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center thinks so. She uses music to help heal cancer patients’ spirits as well as their bodies.
