Icarus organizer Will Hall writes - Hi everyone, I'm writing to let you know that Alternatives 2010 has withdrawn its previous approval for my workshop on coming off psychiatric medications, based on the guide published by The Icarus Project and Freedom Center. Two days ago I received word that the National Empowerment Center decided to rewrite the workshop description to exclude any reference to "coming off medications," which is a central part of the workshop content. Because I cannot go along with this decision I will not be attending the conference. Below is a press release explaining the situation; please share this with others if you are interested."

I presented a workshop on "Radical Mental Health on Campus and in the Community through an Anti-Oppression Lens" I have been considering so much lately how my work organizing in explicit anti-oppression circles around topics of race, gender and class converge with my work as a coordinator for TIP. This weekend and this workshop really merged those parallel lines for me.read more (Source: The Icarus Project - Navigating the Space Between Brilliance and Madness)

An Anthology Articulating the Terrain of Trauma and Resilience

Calling for submissions!

Our aim is to create a beautiful, creative, readable document about trauma and resilience, drawing from a diversity of communities and backgrounds and addressing a wide range of topics and experiences.

We believe it is time for a reader that tells our stories and gathers our poems, radiates with our art and speaks our thoughts. Understanding and being able to relate, calling out and hearing other voices can help us to find individual and collective strength in the face of ecological, social and personal trauma.

A new study of heart patients suffering from depression is in itself depressing — at least if you were excited about the potential of omega-3 fatty acids to life your spirits. From the New York Times:
The patients were randomly assigned to a combination of sertraline, an anti-depressant, and either omega-3s or a corn oil placebo. After 10 weeks, there was “absolutely no difference” in depression remission rates between the 59 patients taking omega-3s and the 56 patients taking the placebo, said Robert M. Carney, lead author of the study, which appeared in the Oct. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
“It was very disappointing,” he said.
The trial was launched because patients with heart disease are at greater risk of dying if they are depressed, Dr. C...

The New York Times ran an article about Ricky Williams that I think was really well-done. It talks about his struggle with marijuana addiction, which compromised his career in the NFL, but more than that, it portrays his psychic battles and explores the way his mind works. It’s okay if it takes six months or a year or whatever; I don’t have any urgent need to be done with it.
This year, I celebrated my 2nd anniversary of being Paxil-free. (The “hurray!” I feel compelled to type here is a complete understatement of my joy.) Back in 2004, I started taking the drug under the advice of my primary care physician for panic attacks and anxiety. After growing (very) disenchanted with its frustrating side effects, I decided to quit.
A row of split and shaved Paxil fragments, lined up in descending size, that I took near the end of my taper.
Here’s the CliffsNotes version of my withdrawal attempts. First attempt: Cold turkey. (Bad idea.) Second attempt: Wean by 50% each week by splitting pills into halves and quarters until I’m down to zero within a month or two. (Also a bad idea.) Third attempt: Wean at 10%-25% dosage by splitting/shaving pills ...

I’ve been in communication with the wonderful and passionate Katherine Stone, author of the blog “Postpartum Progress” and postpartum depression advocate. It’s been a great way to learn and stand up for women with pregnancy-related depression disorders.
The MOTHERS act is currently going through congress. It is a bill that supports research for the causes of postpartum depression as well as education and helping families with appropriate services. There is a great deal of controversy about this act. Those who support are hopeful it will provide better support and services for women who need it. Those who oppose fear that postpartum depression will be overdiagnosed, leading to a great...

I reckon if a cancer can enter your families’ life as unforeseen and uninvited as it has then there is every possibility that a miracle can as well.

Individuals with autism usually have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction, play and cognitive function, as well as certain physical ailments.
