5 Reasons for the Joy of Craft, or, Why Is Computer Programming Fun?

I recently read (sort of) Frederick Brooks’s The Mythical Man-Month. As I understand it, this book is a cult classic, and I was very curious to read it. It’s about software project management, and even though that’s a subject about which I know nothing, I found the book very interesting — that is, the parts I could understand.
My favorite section was a discussion of “The Joys of Craft,” in which Brooks answers the question, “Why is programming fun?” This question interests me because it’s such a good reminder of my Secret of Adulthood: Just because something is fun for someone else doesn’t mean it’s fun for me — and vice versa.

Nothing is inherently fun. Some people find computer programming fun, or skiing, shopping, ...

At lunch today, I was part of a spirited conversation on the pros and cons of reality TV. That’s a broad category, of course, covering a wide range of shows from The Real Housewives to American Idol to Jersey Shore to Project Runway. My older daughter loves that show where they do fancy cake decorations — what’s it called?
TV is significant for happiness — if for no other reason, because of the time involved. In terms of hours, watching TV is probably the world’s most popular pastime. Among Americans, it’s the most common free-time activity — for an average of about five hours a day. It’s a source of relaxing fun.
But while television is a good servant, it’s a bad master. It can swallow up huge quantities of our lives, without much happiness bang for t...

Like Jessica over at A Sweet Life, I have to say that Crystal Bowersox is hands-down my favorite American Idol contest this year, and not just because she has diabetes. She’s just cool. She wears dreadlocks, and plays guitar. People call her “Mama Sox” because she has a one-year-old son. What’s your guilty reality TV pleasure? The Bachelor? Survivor? America’s Got Talent? Of course, the granddaddy of them all — American Idol — just started a new season. Some 30 or 40 million fans have been waiting six months for American Idol to kick off. If this season is anything like last season, expect at least 50 hours of American Idol on your TV. No, that’s not a typo.
Last year I gave you a few ideas on what you could have done with those 50 hours instead of watch American Idol. For example, you could earn an extra $1,000, read several books, start writing your own book, burn 43,000 calories jogging, learn the waltz, and others. But, who am I kidding? If you like the show, you’re not going to listen to me. Heck, I’m not even ...

Our condolences go out to David Cook, who lost his brother, Adam, to brain cancer on Saturday. Cook was the winner of American Idol last season, and fans of the show know that his brother was a source of inspiration for him. At one point in the competition, Cook even broke down while talking about him on stage. Adam could be seen in the front row a time or two, which undoubtedly was a special moment for both brothers.

Cook told the crowd at the 12th Annual Race for Hope in Washington, D.C., on Sunday that his brother had passed the day before. He said, “I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.” Cook, along with his team, helped raise $98,000 for brain cancer research.

I came to work today, not with the usual dread that it’ll be another dreary, tiring duty, but rather, with a sigh of relief. Freedom is sweet.
I was packing my things when Daddy disclosed that he found out about my new camera. It’s a silly, mundane issue, actually, having bought a camera and not telling them about it. But you have to understand that, in a house where permissions have to be sought on just about everything, and at the same time, a season of money drought, buying a camera, an expensive one at that, is a big deal.
Dad said he found it when he was about to put some cash in my drawer (why he has to put it in my personal drawer and, at the same time, rummage in it, is already out of the question, in a house where a person’s privacy is almost non-existent. Partic...

Sorry…this is totally cancer unrelated, I’ll try to create a tangent though. ;-)
For once I agree with Simon Cowell: if American Idol remains a talent competition and not just a popularity contest, you are going to be the winner.
Or was it David Cook he was saying those too? I can’t really remember now. I was really surprised and joined those whose jaws dropped when Ryan Seacrest announced that Michael Johns is out of the American Iol competition.
For most, it was just a coin toss between Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson. I believe too!
According to this report from LA Times, Michael should have asked for America’s help instead of just being the brilliant talent that he is week to week.
Are you kidding me?! America must have forgotten the essence of text voting fo...

I do watch American Idol. I love this show and is definitely a showcase of America’s talent. Who doesn’t love the good judges, Randy and Paula. Then I guess, everyone had hated Simon Cowell at one point or another. Am I right or Am I right?! Ha ha ha.
Anyway, Simon isn’t that bad all the time. He too is capable of appreciating real talent when he sees one. Like his fabulous comments on David Cook and Carly Smithson.
Also, Simon Cowell has a soft heart too. Yes, indeed! Are you ready for this?
Simon Cowell goes soft-hearted with generous gift to cancer-stricken child
Simon says - it’s on me.
The often-harsh “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell was so moved after seeing a sick little girl on Oprah that he paid off her family’s $162,000 mortgage.

I haven’t been able to regularly post about the AI as I’ve been busy with work. But I wasn’t busy enough to miss the shows. For 3 weeks I’ve been following AI and it must be one of the very few shows that I watch on TV nowadays.
I’m happy with the crop of new talents they have on AI this season. But, actually, for me the top 12 onwards are the more exciting and interesting part because these are the times when the less interesting talents are weeded out of the group. Not that I hate their talent. I just don’t find them too interesting. Well, except Danny Noriega. I think he should have ...

I see that a lot of my favorites got in, like Michael Johns, Ramiele Malubay, Robbie Carrico, Joanne Borgella, David Cook, David Archuleta, Asia’h Epperson, Carly Smithson, and Amanda Overmyer. This means that I’ll be cheering for a 1/3 of the Top 24! Yey! Really something to look forward to.
I just feel bad that Zpia and Samantha Musa didn’t make it. Why, oh why? I haven’t seen the Hollywood auditions and I won’t be able to catch the replay on Saturday. I hope somebody will post the Hollywood auditions on Youtube so I could download and watch.
And so ends the auditions and next week, the real American Idol show starts! Yey!

American Idol Season 7: Miami Auditions

Audition passers in Miami (in order of appearance in the video posted here): Robbie Carrico, Ghaleb Emachah, Corliss Smith, Brittany Wescott, Suzanne Toon, Ramielle Malubay, Syesha Mercado, Natashia Blach, Ilsy Lorena Pinot.
Certainly, Miami auditions produced a lot of talents for the Hollywood part of the auditions.
Robbie Carrico is another rock singer-type of contestant. A competitor for David of Omaha Auditions? Maybe so. But I still kind of like David.
It’s quite a mystery how Ghaleb Emchah got in. Yes, he could sing, but Simon is right in saying that the thick Mexican accent is getting in the way.
It was fun watching best friends Corliss Smith and Brittany Wescott audition together. But, of the two, I liked Brittany Wescott better. Her voice seemed suited for contemporary songs...

I think I’ve got new AI favorites from the auditions held at Omaha, Nebraska.
Jason Rich is cute and he’s got a good voice. A major turn-off, though, was that he forgot the lyrics of the song he sang, “When You Say Nothing At All”. I hope that he overcomes that during the Hollywood auditions so that he’ll land in the Top 24. If he’d be able to do that, he’s going to be a chick-magnet on the show.
Samantha Sidley isn’t exactly the spectacular performer-type of a singer but I like her voice and the Norah Jones’ song, “Don’t Know Why” suited her. If perhaps she could give something new in the show so she wouldn’t be constantly compared to Norah Jones (like sing more lively, perhaps?), she can stay on the sho...

American Idol Season 7: Charleston Auditions

Honestly, I wasn’t at all happy at the turnout of the auditions held in Charleston (ooohhhh…an AI judge wannabe? Hehehe). But there are some interesting auditions, like that of Michelle and Jeffrey Lampkin (the first ones who appeared on the Youtube video embedded in this post). They performed a duet very well, although I’ve got to partially agree with Simon when he said that Jeffrey was a better singer than Michelle. But it may be perhaps Michelle’s voice didn’t just come out very prominently in the duet so as not to clash with Jeffrey’s voice. I think what they should have done is to have asked both of them to perform solo auditions, in addition to the duet. But, overall, I think they deserve a chance to go to Hollywood.
As for Amy Flynn, she’s g...

American Idol Season 7: San Diego Auditions

I had tons of patients at the clinic today, which made me thought that I might not be able to get home on time for the 6 p.m. show of AI (I know there are replays but I just want to watch it the soonest possible time). Good thing I was able to make some way how to see all those patients for preemployment and annual medical evaluation and got home just about when the American Idol theme was already playing on QTV.
I’d say I like the San Diego auditions better than the previous one, which was in Dallas, Texas (but, of course, I still like the Dallas episode because my favorite, Zpia, is in it. See her video in my previous post. Imagine, she’s also got a MySpace page!). The auditions in San Diego produced a lot of talents, I think.
Here’s a video of the “winners&#822...

And so the AI auditions have landed on the Lone Star!
I watched the 6 p.m. show of the AI and though there’s a bunch of good talents, I haven’t been really quite impressed. However, I’ve to say I’ve got my sights on Pia “Zpia” Easley. I think she’s got talent and with more improvements, can really be star material.

I kinda like Simon Cowell’s smile towards the end of her audition. He really must like her. I mean, the performance. I think she’s going to Top 24.
I also like that other girl who do voice impressions. She did an okay job imitating Britney Spears voice during the audition. I just forgot the name, though. I’ll have to find her video on youtube.
And then there are those sappy little sidestories like those of Bruce and hi...

American Idol Season 7 Begins Tonight

This is a bit of a late post, as the season premiere of American Idol Season 7 already was aired earlier at around 6 p.m. at QTV 11.
Personally, I was excited anticipating this season premiere, as I’ve always been a fan of American Idol show since Season 5. And though catching the Idol at the earliest time possible meant leaving the clinic early, I still did, making sure that all patients had been seen already and all the lab tests soon to be finished. There’s TV at the clinic, but I didn’t want to stay for another 2 hours there, though.
The auditions first landed on Philadelphia and there were, I think, 600+ hopefuls who patiently lined up and battled the smothering heat in the “City of Brotherly Love”.
Certainly Philadelphia have a bunch of good talents. I h...

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Childhood, Adult Onset, Lifestyle, Drugs, Research, Books, SupportAfter living with diabetes for over 50 years, and witnessing few changes in the treatment of the disease, Brent Hoadley has written Too Profitable to Cure.
Distressed that the cure is no closer now than when he was diagnosed, at the age of 14 -- Hoadley took it upon himself to find answers. He notes the current state of healthcare for those who suffer from chronic diseases, and contends that profit, not humanitarianism, is driving American healthcare. As an entrepreneur and an investor, he is aware, and appreciates the profit motive that drives capitalism. However, he feels the bottom line should not interfere with the pursuit of a cure. With pragmatic drive, he identifies culprits and urges act...

Filed under: Diet, Research, SurgeryAl Roker, Randy Jackson (of American Idol fame, not Michael Jackson's younger brother), Carney Wilson, and thousands of other Americans -- what do they all have in common? They have all undergone gastric bypass surgery as a last resort to losing weight. Leaving my opinion on such surgeries out of this, I'm instead going to mention a post-op side effect that most people aren't aware of. Here's a hint: Those people I mentioned might not be able to remember the side effect, even if their doctor told them about it.
Based on a study published in the March 13th issue of Neurology, weight loss surgery can lead to a vitamin B1 and thiamine deficiency which, in turn, can cause memory loss and confusion. These effects, collectively referred to as Wernicke encephal...
