“I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be compassionate. It is, above all, to matter and to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you lived at all.” - Louis D. Brandeis
It’s become popular over the last several years, to create vision boards in order to manifest your dreams. Vision boards are collages, made with images cut from magazines. Their purpose is to represent the abundance you want in to create and obtain in your life.
The manifestation guru’s want you to believe that reaching your goals and manifesting your dreams will bring you happiness.
The problem with vision boards is that they are all about ‘me,’ my needs, my wants, and my desires. They don’t stand for community, service to oth...

I read in the news this morning that toxicology reports showed no illicit substances in the samples taken from Amy Winehouse several weeks ago. Alcohol was present, but not in amounts that would typically be fatal.

	Amy Winehouse

By the stories that came out in the days leading up to her death, I consider it likely that substances played a role in her tragic and untimely death. But the lack of substances in her body should serve as a tribute to her attempt to find sobriety. I wanted to set that record straight, after my comments about her death several weeks ago.

Amy Winehouse, relapse or cold turkey alcohol withdrawal?

The sad and mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Amy Winehouse have left me baffled. The unfortunate truth is that either account is believable. Her family says it was alcohol withdrawal.
A drug dealer has come forward saying that he arranged for Amy to buy some drugs from another drug dealer referred to as “Mr. Big”. He says she purchased 1/2 oz. crack and a 1/2 oz. heroin.
Police are saying that there was no evidence of drugs or even paraphernalia in the house. Her family says she had been clean off drugs for years and was trying to quit alcohol. They believe she had a heart attack or seizure from trying to go cold turkey.
They did an autopsy but it came up inconclusive; toxicology will take a few more weeks to be done.
The family is setting up a fund to set up a reha...

Tragically another music icon ends an incredibly creative life at age 27. Besides the uncanny fact that so many (10) incredibly talented musicians who died at 27, there is the other apparent truth that they all had everything their peers could have wanted. They were incredibly successful, had huge fan base, and were selling albums and tickets to concerts galore. What could possibly have gone wrong?

Ms. Winehouse said living dangerously generated her creativity, and she was often photographed half-dressed, wild-eyed and disheveled. The English tabloids reported she had suffered brain damage from excessive use of drugs and alcohol."

When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they’ve had enough, that they’re ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it’s too late, she’s gone.
Frustratingly it’s not a call you can ever make it must be received. It is impossible to intervene.

For those curious as to what went down before Jeff Kindler unexpectedly resigned last December as the Pfizer ceo, a new treatise in Fortune magazine offers a behind-the-scenes look at the political infighting, overblown aspirations and inept calculations that contributed to his demise, as well as a decade of disappointment and a few spectacular failures at the big drugmaker.
For Kindler, the end came in a plain vanilla Florida airport conference room where he was confronted by three board members, who - after probing a steady stream of confidential reports that his managerial style was overbearing, his behavior was increasingly erratic and his judgment was questionable - decided he must go. Essentially, he was given an ultimatum - with a lot of money.
The moment capped a tumultuous few yea...

By now, everyone who knows of Amy Winehouse is aware of her tragic death. I’ve always liked her music. So much music these days has been digitally processed and reprocessed, and assaults the senses– I’m thinking of Lady Gaga, for example, whose ‘Edge of Glory’ would be pretty boring in concert if you took away the flashing lights. But Amy Winehouse’s music had an earthy, sultry style that communicated her emotions in a way that words can’t… which is why we even listen to music, at least in my case.
Every now and then I’ll meet a person coming in for help who has an addiction that seems to be almost part of a death wish, as if the person is taking agent after agent with one goal: to eliminate any sense of consciousness or emotion. It is ...

By Michael F. CannonColumbia Business School economist Ray Fisman has a piece at Slate.com discussing the first-year results of the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment. In brief, when Oregon transferred an average of $3,000 from taxpayers to poor people in the form of Medicaid coverage, it did those poor people some good.
Fisman’s interpretation of the results is different from mine in mainly two respects. First, I describe the one-year benefits of Medicaid coverage as modest; he says they’re “enormous.”
A more fundamental difference concerns whether expanding Medicaid was a cost-effective use of the taxpayers’ money. Fisman writes:
Given the added expense, did the Medicaid expansion prove to be cost-effective? That is, did the treatment group actually...

By Michael F. CannonThe Oregon Health Insurance Experiment is the first experiment since the dawn of time that randomly assigns some households to receive health insurance (Medicaid) for purposes of comparing their medical consumption, health outcomes, and financial security to similar households that do not receive Medicaid coverage. Some of the nation’s top health economists have released the first batch of results from the OHIE.
At National Review (Online), I summarize the OHIE’s first-year results and offer the following analysis:
Supporters of President Obama’s health-care law may tout these benefits, but the OHIE does not provide the vindication they seek. First, despite being eligible for Medicaid, 13 percent of the control group had private health insurance — s...

In the ongoing war between device makers and the FDA, the Minnesota Congressional delegation has sent a terse letter to the agency over what they maintain is a slow-as-molasses approval process. This comes less than three months after a Congressional hearing in which FDA procedures were hotly debated and included testimony from patients who claimed tougher agency reviews would have prevented injuries.
At issue is the simmering tension between the agency, which embraces a get-tough policy on safety matters while lamenting a lack of sufficient funding, and an industry that wants to grow its bottom line but is also under a microscope - largely thanks to the ongoing Medtronic scandal over repudiated research and unseemly ties to physicians.
However, the Minnesota pols - a group that includes ...

See the top 1o Worst Lovers list below!

But first, let’s talk about who was the least worst!
Spanish men topped the table as the best lovers! Why? I think this might be an example, Iker Casillas turned a little naughty after winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Girlfriend and TV presenter Sara Carbonero was interviewing him and asked about the match however Iker Casillas replied by kissing her live on the Spanish TV. Maybe this is why women see Spanish men as intense, passionate and exciting lovers? Sara Carbonero was took by surprise and said “Oh my God, I will come back later”, and I am sure sh...

By Michael F. CannonOver at The Incidental Economist, Austin Frakt challenges a couple of claims I made on NPR about Medicare reform. (Here’s how NPR reported my comments in print.)
My claims are pretty simple.

If Medicare subsidizes enrollees by giving them a fixed amount of money, much like Social Security does, they would be more cost-conscious than they are under the current open-ended subsidy, because enrollees who avoid wasteful spending would themselves get to keep the savings. Put more plainly, people spend their own money more carefully than they spend other people’s money.
Health insurers and health care providers would compete to serve these cost-conscious Medicare enrollees on the basis of both cost and quality. Prices would fall while quality improves.

I’m going to skip my biweekly words of reflection today and talk about something important going on this month. While bees spread pollen during spring, organizations are spreading awareness about autism in April.
There will be several activities running this month that will help raise awareness about autism, which is defined by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke as, “complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.” It is estimated that “three to six children out of every 1,000 will have an autism spectrum disorder.”

The ongoing shortage of prescription medicines continues to wreak havoc in the form of rising medication errors and are costing US hospitals an extra $200 million by forcing them to purchase more expensive generics or other therapeutic substitutes, according to a survey by the Premier alliance of hospitals and healthcare provideres.
Why is this happening? At least 42 percent of sterile injectable drug shortages last year were due to product quality problems, such as particulates, microbial contamination, newly identified impurities and stability changes. Another 9 percent were due to problems with raw materials and 5 percent were attributed to the shutdown of a manufacturing site. Keep in mind, Premier notes, that foreign markets are the source for up to 80 percent of the raw materials req...

Two senators want the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate the price that KV Pharmaceuticals is charging for its brand new Makena med for high-risk pregnancies, given that versions of the same drug have been available from compounding pharmacies for many years at a fraction of the cost. The drugmaker, they charge, is price gouging.
The cost of the treatment went from roughly $10 to $20 to $1,500 after KV received FDA approval earlier this year. And KV has also sent letters to compounding pharmacies warning them about continuing to make the treatment or face possible legal action. A trade group representing compounders pooh-poohed the threat, but patients, doctors and insurers are outraged at the price tag (back story).
Investors, however, believe Makena represents a remarkable turnar...

By Walter OlsonIn recent weeks the press has been reporting widespread alarms about shortages of many frequently used hospital drugs [L.A. Times/Chicago Tribune, Scranton Times-Tribune, KMGH (Colorado hospitals swapping drugs in short supply), The Columbian] The drugs running short include various antibiotics, anesthetics, chemotherapy drugs and others, including many generic compounds long since approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "The most troubling aspect is that it is critical drugs for which there are limited alternatives. Many are involved in cancer care and surgery," one hospital pharmacist told the Chicago Tribune's reporter.
While a variety of factors have played a role in the shortages, including lawsuits and economic retrenchment by some drugmakers, there...

This is straying pretty far from the usual blog posts, but its topical. Listening to Bill Simmons’s podcast with Chuck Klosterman while driving home last night got me thinking about the role of confidence in society. Would be interested in hearing feedback on it.
A common reaction to periods of high anxiety, stress (or hangovers), is negative self-talk. Muttering things like “I hate myself, I’m worthless” etc. These reflexive utterances, though not fully contemplated, produce a running monologue that reinforces negative thought processes during the period of anxiety. With the amount of stress, hangovers and therapy that Charlie Sheen has been through, I suspect that he has trained himself to reflexively substitute negative self-talk phrases with positive phrases, “I...

Many people struggle with the question of whether or not to tell their bosses about their mood disorders at work. Washington Post columnist Amy Joyce wrote an excellent article on this a few years ago. I have included the first few paragraphs below, but urge you to read the rest of her article, as it gives no straight answers but explores that terrain with great depth.
If you have depression or some other mental illness, what do you do about work? Hope no one notices? Disclose your illness early on and trust that your boss will understand?
Should You Tell is a complicated question.
There is no right answer, and there are some risks to consider.
I discovered this years ago after watching a movie at home with two friends. One of them looked up, scared. She hesitated. And then she let it out:...

Feeding A Beast: Pfizer And Its Nutritional Business

Given its myriad problems and a confessed willingness to shed activities not considered to be at the core of its mission, should Pfizer consider spinning off its nutritional unit? After all, the business is pegged to grow faster than other units; there may not be tax consequences; a spin off reduces the dividend burden and such a move could bolster the notion that Pfizer execs are thinking new thoughts.
The idea was broached in an investor note by Credit Suisse analyst Catherine Arnold just before Pfizer disclosed plans last week to - once again - reward investors by closing an R&D facility, eliminating several R&D areas and, this time, throwing 3,400 employees overboard. That caused Pfizer stock to hit a 52-week high, yet the shares remain roughly 30 percent below their price at...

Over at the new Law & Mind Blog, several Harvard Law students have been blogging about about system justification theory. Here is one of those posts, written by first -year student Marty Ehlenbach.
Yale Law Professor Amy Chua’s recently published book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has become a seemingly endless source of fodder for Internet blogs and discussion groups. The book, largely meant to be a memoir, recounts the author’s methods of raising her two daughters; she allowed them limited time for playdates or TV, and describes grueling methods for both study and music practice. When a short excerpt was published in the Wall Street Journal, the newspaper fielded an enormous number of comments (7670 at this writing) expressing a wide variety of opinions on the topic. ...

Certainly, at hospitals. In fact, the shortage of injectable generics for cancer and other serious diseases is forcing many hospitals to scramble to locate meds or find alternatives. In some cases, the FDA has allowed imports, but the agency approval process has also meant fewer new available generics. “We think this is near a crisis situation,” Bona Benjamin, a director at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a pharmacist trade group, tells The Wall Street Journal.
Numbers, of course, help tell the story. The FDA reports a record 178 drug shortages in 2010, up from 157 the year earlier and 55 five years ago. And here is the latest list. You’ll notice this is much shorter than the list indicating shortages that have been resolved (take a peek).

A few weeks ago, my roommates and I ordered Thai food. We went to pick it up, and once we got home, we realized that we’d been given someone else’s order as well as our own. Rather than call and admit our error, we had a Thai feast, with enough leftovers for lunch and dinner the next day. You could say we went Thai crazy. So, I’m sorry, Pagoda Thai Food. And I’m sorry to the customer who probably had to wait for ten minutes while their food was remade. Even though you probably got some free spring rolls to make up for the error. (Consider that my gift to you.)
Phew. It feels good to have that out in the open.
Most of us have an apology lurking deep within us, but for whatever reason, we can’t say it. Whether it’s coming years too late, ...

While watching New York Times correspondent Amy Harmon try with some difficulty to have a conversation with a robot woman, it becomes increasingly obvious that robots will not replace humans for emotional fulfillment anytime soon. The only similarity between Bina48 and your best friend is that they both sometimes say, “Um.” But Bina48 makes awkward jokes about scheming to take over the world.

It’s time to ask patients whether they text and drive. An important perspective piece from the New England Journal of Medicine urges doctors to include that question during preventive health exams. The data surrounding texting and driving is grim:
Although there are many possible distractions for drivers, more than 275 million Americans own cell phones, and 81% of them talk on those phones while driving. The adverse consequences have reached epidemic proportions. Current data suggest that each year, at least 1.6 million traffic accidents (28% of all crashes) in the United States are caused by drivers talking on cell phones or texting. Talking on the phone causes many more accidents than texting, simply because millions more drivers talk than text; moreover, using a hands-free device does...

“If you build it, he will come” is the famous line in the classic 1989 flick, “Field of Dreams.”
When Iowa corn farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) starts hearing voices to build a baseball diamond in his fields — sacrificing all the income from his crop — everyone thinks he’s gone mad. He has. Sort of. But then he sees Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) on the field, and the details begin to fall into place.
It’s funny how you pick up different things in a movie depending on where you are in life. The movie came out just as I was graduating from high school and figuring out how to live my life sober. My vision was very black and white then. It has to be in the early days of sobriety, or else you’ll end up drunk. So I remember the &#8220...

“Buzzy” Pain Relief For Kids

Here’s Buzzy, a reusable pain relief device developed by a pediatrician. It works based on the gate control theory of pain:
Buzzy is a newly developed reusable pain relief device that children can bring to the doctor’s office with them to help dull the pain of shots! As the brainchild of Pediatrician Amy Baxter, Buzzy rapidly reduces pain when pressed onto the skin. Buzzy is especially helpful for children who receive shots often, like those suffering from diabetes. Buzzy can also be used for the small things, like taking splinters out!
Not only is Buzzy a kid-favorite, but it’s safe, effective immediately on contact, FDA compliant, and environmentally friendly, too.

Life has a way of taking its twists and turns and ups and downs…and soon enough we’re over 40 and wondering when, if ever, we’ll “hit our stride”.
Self-acceptance and self-esteem are closely related…and arises as you learn that you are perfect with all your accomplishments, victories, and … vices. Self-acceptance is as essential to one’s well-being as water is to a blooming flower. Have you ever re-framed your “inadequacies” and lack of self-acceptance into a humor and candor….where laughter has a place in healing and well-being?

Phil & Amy Mickelson at 2010 Masters Golf Tournament

Tiger Woods is a fine golfer with some personal problems, and that’s all I have to say about Mr. Woods.
Except for the schadenfraude enthusiasts, who no doubt relished Tiger’s 4th-place finish at the 2010 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga., on Sunday all eyes were turned to winner Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy.
For 11 months Amy Mickelson has battled breast cancer. She had not been on any golf course since her diagnosis last May, and she was in bed most of the week in Augusta leading up to the tournament…

In May 2009, Amy Mickelson was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has been battling the disease for the past 11 months and has been bedridden for much of that time. Amy is a mother of three children and the wife of Phil Mickelson, the winner of the 2010 Masters golf tournament.
Like many people, I tuned in to watch the Masters this past weekend because Tiger Woods was playing. I am not a huge fan of Tiger’s, but like a lot of people I was disappointed when I learned of his lapse in character and integrity over the past years. I am hoping for his family’s sake that Tiger can get his career and personal commitments back on track, so I tuned in hoping to see him do well. I can relate to his wife, Elin Nordegren, since I was betrayed by my first husband in a similar way.
For obvious reasons...

The sex column has mutated mightily since the earliest days of “Ask Anka” in Details. Once banished to the back section of alt-weeklies, right by the classified ads, frank first-person sex writing has spread to college newspapers and blogs.
And ad as this world has matured, so have its participants. So what happens when writers decide that they want to focus their erotic energies on one person, or just that they need to take a break from chronicling their intimate exploits? Some writers go the eminent-sage route, moving into a position where they dole out advice to the needy. But others, including the acid-tongued New York City dating columnist Amy Sohn and the pioneering sex website Nerve, are moving on to a step t...

The highly charged debate over vaccines took an unusual turn late last month when a widely quoted anti-vaccine crusader, Barbara Loe Fisher, filed a lawsuit against Wired magazine and one of its writers, along with Paul Offit, an infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, over a recent story.
The November piece quotes, Offit, who is regularly villified by those questioning vaccines especially in connection with the debate over autism, as criticizing Fisher, who runs the National Vaccine Information Center, a self-described vaccine watchdog. Specifically, Offit says that Fisher “lies” (here is the lawsuit).
In her suit, Fisher complains the article wrongfully portrays Offit, who is credited as one of the developers of Merck’s Rotateq vacc...

Looking to save money on its $500 million-plus annual legal bills, Pfizer’s top in-house lawyer, Amy Schulman, is changing the way the drugmaker pays the numerous law firms that handle patent, product liability and other litigation. Schulman, who joined Pfizer from DLA Piper in mid-2008 (see here), initiated a flat fee instead of billable hours and, so far, 19 firms have met the new standards. By the end of 2010, she wants three-fourths of her legal spending to be handled within the network and slash domestic legal spending by 15 percent to 20 percent.
Beyond cost cutting, Schulman wants to build better long-term relationships with her outside counsel. By liberating them from the billable hour, she believes the law firms can focus on the real value of their work for the drugmaker. Ul...

Amy Winehouse In Rehab…Again

Let me start out by saying that I am a huge fan of Amy Winehouse's music. I absolutely love her style and feel that in the world of today's music, it is very unique.
What is not unique is Amy Winehouse's addiction problems. She has been on a downward spiral for a long time which included an attempt to enter a rehab facility in August of 2007. That attempt at recovery lasted about three days and obviously had no lasting effect. So will January 24th's check in to rehab be any different than the last?
Since Amy Winehouse is in the public eye we've all gotten to watch the train wreck of her addiction. The most recent, and in my opinion the most disturbing, example of this was a video posted by a British tabloid called The Sun. This video showed Amy Winehouse smoking crack on film.
It w...

Amy Winehouse performed at the Grammys via satellite from London last night in her first televised performance since entering into rehab last month.
"Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know, know, know". I guess those Amy Winehouse lyrics from her song Rehab still ring true...even if she did end up saying yes to rehab.

I was honestly nervous for Amy Winehouse last night. She ended up doing an excellent job at the Grammys because she is truly a performer at heart.
I was reading an Amy Winehouse article in NME which was an interview with one of her back up singers. In this interview Ade Omotayo was explaining that Amy Winehouse has been much more healthy and happy after coming out of rehab.
In this interview Ade Omotayo went on to explain that while they were in the studio wait...

Those of you who, like Dr Crippen, are armchair cricket fans will be familiar with that out-swinging fast ball which the batsman edges. The wicket keeper and the first slip stand frozen as the ball passes between them. Each thinks the other is going to take the catch. Neither moves and so, a couple of seconds later, the ball is over the boundary for four runs.Unforgiveable.A middle-aged man goes into hospital to have a minor operation to remove a bladder stone. The hospital policy is that all patients over 50 who are to have a general anaesthetic should have a CXR (you can argue about that, but policy is policy…) so the urologist orders one. The operation is successful. The patient goes home. The CXR showed a small lung cancer. The urologist, the anaesthetist and the primary care physici...

Anxious college freshmen can relax. No matter who will be sharing their dorm room, they have the power to make the relationship better, University of Michigan research suggests.
The research, published in the September 2008 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, was conducted by psychologists Jennifer Crocker and Amy Canevello at the U-M Institute for Social Research.

Crocker and Canevello studied more than 300 college freshmen who were assigned to share rooms with other students they didn’t know at the start of the first semester. In one study, participants were surveyed once a week for 10 weeks about their attitudes toward friendships in general, and about their feelings of loneliness and experiences of conflict.
Why has the cost of some drugs skyrocketed? That’s the question the Joint Economic Committee explored at a hearing yesterday in which some specialty pharma companies were skewered for raising prices dramatically after buying meds from larger drugmakers.
Among those cited were Ovation Pharmaceuticals, whose ceo, Jeff Aronin, is a PhRMA board member. In her opening remarks, US Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, indicated she asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Ovation for allegedly exploiting a lack of competition to one of its products. Another company cited was Questcor Pharmaceuticals.

I knew about Amy’s Army when I got the following in my inbox from Dori Persky:
Amy Katz was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) in 2003. She volunteered to participate in a worldwide study for Gleevac in order to “help other kids.” But, while the drug allows her to lead a somewhat normal lift, the only known cure for CML is a stem cell transplant. Although Amy’s whole family has been tested, none of them are a match (although ironically, her two sisters are perfect matches for each other.)
Amy’s Army was founded by friends and family soon after learning about Amy’s diagnosis. They held their first marrow drive in 2004 and had a turnout of over 1,620 people! The second drive drew 500 people in the midst of a Pittsburgh snowstorm! Although the many marrow drives...

Most likely, Amy Winehouse doesn’t have emphysema. Yet. Most likely, her doctor’s said something like “If you don’t stop smoking that bad cough you have already will just get worse and lead to chronic bronchitis, emphysema and COPD. Not only will your singing career be over, but you’ll be dependent on supplemental oxygen and will have to lug around a tank of it wherever you go. Forever.” Want another cigarette? Just say “No, no, no.”
Cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 1 of every 5 deaths (438,000 people) each year. Yet an estimated 1 of every 5 adults (21 percent) in America still smoke (some 45 million people). What’s worse, smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases...

We do it for breast cancer walks, we do it to raise money for research, we do it to support each other and we can do it to nominate one of our own for “America’s Favorite Mom.”
Betty Yerkes is the mother of Amy Yerkes, the woman who invited us this past February to participate in her study at Adelphi University on the emotional impact of a breast cancer diagnosis. Amy nominated her mom, and Betty made it all the way to the semi-finals.
Jake and Amy both arrive for their session. Jake says he will miss the office -- he likes the feel of it and the clutter. Paul asks why he says they will miss it. Amy says they are getting divorced. Jake says it is because of Paul, of therapy, that therapy did them good. Amy says good if you mean a disaster.
Amy asks Paul if he has ever been through a divorce. Paul suggests maybe they could start with talking about the last week. Amy says they didn't see each other all week. Her tone is brittle and angry. Amy says she doesn't want to talk about her week, that therapy has just made her miserable.. Jake says that's not how it has been, that Paul has helped them see how they bring out the worst in each other.
Amy continues to be angry. Jake seems more at ease.
Amy says she heard Jake play whe...

Well, you know how I feel about this couple. Let's see where they take us today.
Kate is standing by the office window when Paul enters after telling Max to take care of something. He and Max have been to Max's game. Kate asks Paul to close the door so she can talk with him. She tells him that she called and left a message for Gina that she won't be returning to therapy. That she does not want to go over that ground again, that she needs to figure this out on her own. She tells him that she is really happy he is seeing Gina and that she hopes she can help him.
Jake is there. Paul asks if Amy is coming and he says he doesn't think so. Jake says it has been a weird week, quiet and awkward. That Lenny seems relaxed and at ease, which he thinks is odd. Paul says kids do that when they sense...

Thursday is not my favorite day of Paul's week. Jake & Amy time again.
Paul opens the door and Jake walks in. He says Amy is waiting in the car. Jake talks about how nice the neighborhood is and how much the house Paul lives in is worth. Paul says they have lived there 22 years. Jake says he hiked the Appalachian Trail when he was 17 -- the trail goes through near Paul's house. Jake asks if he and Paul might have become friends if they had met long ago.
Jake says they drove there together today -- part of the new plan, to be accommodating. Then he starts complaining about Amy's driving, that she won't talk on the phone while driving, despite the fact that she treats the car as a place to do business. So she pulls over every time. Paul asks why he doesn't drive. He says he fell asleep...

We begin this week as Amy is outside the office talking on her cell phone. Paul comes out and she says she is a little early. Paul asks if she can wait a few minutes and goes back inside.
Then we seeAmy is alone. She gets up to close the curtain. Then fluffs the pillow on the couch. Paul asks how she is and she says good. She says she rushed to get there. She says Jake is not coming. She tells Paul that they are together, that everything is fine and they are seemingly in love.
Amy says she was miffed that Paul asked her to wait outside and wonders if he would let another patient, someone he likes more, come in early. She says she knows she and Jake are not easy as patients. Paul asks how she would describe herself. She says maybe she wo...

Let me start out by saying that I am a huge fan of Amy Winehouse’s music. I absolutely love her style and feel that in the world of today’s music, it is very unique.
What is not unique is Amy Winehouse’s addiction problems. She has been on a downward spiral for a long time which included an attempt to enter a rehab facility in August of 2007. That attempt at recovery lasted about three days and obviously had no lasting effect. So will January 24th’s check in to rehab be any different than the last? (more…)

Award winning Diabetes Mine Blog by Amy Tenderich describes the "Etiquette Cards" by the Behavioral Diabetes Institute which advise others who don't have diabetes on appropriate behavior. The first tip is "Don't offer unsolicited advice about my eating or other aspects of diabetes." Being helpful or supportive without being annoying is often a challenge and the tips give some concrete guidance. The "etiquette" includes advice not to tell "horror stories" about others whom you have known who had diabetes, and don't offer the wrong type of reassurances, such as saying "it could be worse, you could have cancer."The privacy of a diabetic's blood sugar, and the request for others to avoid looking "horrified" when a diabetic checks blood sugar or administers an injection are other tips on the li...

I'm tired, but never fear, my loyal readers, there are addicts acting up worldwide, and I'll be sure to bring you news of them, even in my boring contentedness. And as long at Pete Doherty is still breathing, there will be heroin news. I think I make money with these News Room things, too...like if you click on it or something, I get some money. Click click click! Make me rich! I promise that if I get a bunch of money, my husband will act like a madman, which will make me write lots of stuff! It's a win-win situation! And one day, I'll post that picture of me and Paris, wearing big glasses and showing our hoohahs in a fancy car with the license tag reading, "JUNKWIFE." Hah!I do wish Amy Winehouse would quit acting like that...

I was just checking out Amy T's review of this and other cool/interesting new diabetes-related gadgetry on her site, Diabetes Mine. The Renew Advanced Lancing System: it's sleek, small, and in cool colors - retro lime green and silver. But the name! "Renew Advanced Lancing System" - jeepers, couldn't they have thought of something a little catchier?? Anyway, it's a handy little self-contained, disposable lancing unit that contains twenty needles. Don't bother checking out the website, 'cause there's no info on there yet. Hmm...Amy gives the thumbs-down to another newie: the DUO-CARE, a combined blood glucose and blood pressure monitor. The idea is okay, but the design: ...

Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, Events, Opinion, Services, Allie Beatty, SupportHear ye! Hear ye! I have an announcement to make. About 3 months ago, a committee formed to explore the possibility of creating a new conference series for adults with type 1 diabetes. Most conferences are currently geared towards all types of diabetes, but a group of us felt there should be more for the unique challenges that are posed to adults living with type 1.
With that in mind, we are conducting an interest study for the conference. Who would you like to see at the conference? Tell us what is missing from Type 1 diabetes (besides the obvious **cure**). This will help us with programming, as well as securing sponsorships for the event. Besides giving you all you want from the latest and greatest in type ...

Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, ResearchNine-year-old Devin Linendoll was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the tender age of two. He's gone from a toddler criss-crossed with comforting Band-Aids after a day of shots, to a whiz with his insulin pump. Now Devin's parents, Amy and Lawrence, just found out their youngest son, Trevor, has at least a 50 percent chance of developing type 1 within the next five years. After a lengthy set of complex blood tests, Dr. Bill Russell, Devin's pediatric endocrinologist, determined Trevor's six-year-old body is attacking its insulin. He makes plenty now, but his body thinks insulin is an invader. If Trevor follows in Devin's footsteps, his immune system will continue to attack insulin-generating cells, slowly destroying insulin capacity.
The Linendoll's...

Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, Events, SupportLast week Amy Tenderich, creator of Diabetes Mine and co-author of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes, sent out an email asking us to speak out on behalf of Mr. Universe. I remembered the gist of the story when it first happened, back in April. What I didn't realize was the ensuing atrocities for Mr. Burns after the event.
Back in April, Doug Burns was maced by police during a hypoglycemic event at a movie theater. During the episode, the police assumed he was intoxicated, despite a bystander's insistence that it might be a diabetes issue. He was handcuffed, thrown into a car, and driven to a nearby ER without proper treatment for his hypoglycemia. Officers arrested him for assault and resisting arrest. Prosecutors initially insisted Bu...

Filed under: Type 2, Adult Onset, BooksThe best part of blogging for The Diabetes Blog is the steep learning curve you embark upon as you research media outlets with an eye on diabetes. I've grown up as a sister and daughter of two brothers and a mom and dad with type 1 diabetes, but the challenges type 2 diabetics face are entirely foreign.
Alarmingly, recent surveys reveal about 60% of type 2 diabetics are not reaching glycemic goals. A new book, Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: Five Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life, offers type 2 diabetics tools to better manage their health. Authors Richard A. Jackson, MD, Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School and Amy L. Tenderich, MA, diabetes blogger, journalist and author, hope the book can guid...

Mr. Universe, Doug Burns got arrested and has to go to trial. Why? Because he was acting drunk and, supposedly, resisted arrest. Why? Because his blood sugar was 29! Why? Because he is a Type 1 diabetic and he was experiencing a “low” related to a mismatch between his insulin dose and his insulin need. This happens sometimes.Low blood sugar can have many different manifestations. Sometimes people pass out. Some people just get jittery and nervous. And, it is not uncommon for people to become confused and seem like they are drunk when their blood sugar gets too low. That is what happened to Doug. Unfortunately, Doug’s low occurred in a public place – a movie house – and police thought they had a public drunk on their hands. They arrested him and...

Gene Genie and I are in the same town this weekend. While Genie is over at Neurophilosophy, I just returned to London this morning from my annual trip to the San Francisco Bay Area to visit family and friends. The trip was totally satisfying and I also had the good fortune to hook up with some brilliant people who are as intense about genetics as I am, including 23andMe, Lisa Lee at DNA Direct (along with some serious IM chats with Jason Bobe), and Thomas Goetz at Wired. Silicon Valley feels like the center of the world. I can’t believe I moved away 13 years ago never to return (well, never say never ).
By the way, for a giggle read this: DNA Proves Winehouse is Shergar. I had no idea if Amy Winehouse sounded like a horse or not until I saw this video:
