I have been writing a lot lately, which you cannot tell from here because I have posted almost none of it. I am not going to correct that situation now, but put down a list of my favorite autobiographies — few in number.

Cider With Rosie, Laurie Lee
Look Homeward, Angel, Thomas Wolfe

While patients in the US are deluged with information, patients in India are usually starved for this. They have to depend upon US websites for information ( much of which is not applicable to Indian conditions and diseases); or upon their doctor ( who is often too busy to educate them !)One of the major issues is that the importance of educating patients has still not become a pressing issue for doctors. Traditionally, Indian doctors have always been quite paternalistic; and most Indian patients are quite happy to follow the doctor's orders. While it's true that times are changing, and that the younger generation of doctors is more willing to be open ad to invest time in discussing treatment options with their patients, another limitation has been the acute shortage of patient educational ...

Women choose to have tubal ligation reversal for many reasons. The most common reason is to have more children naturally after tubal ligation. There are many other reasons and the tubal ligation reversal experts of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center share some the most common reasons expressed by their patients when they have their tubes untied.
By Chris EdwardsThe Wall Street Journal has an important editorial today on how the financial “reform” bill being considered by Congress could help kill the angel investment industry in the United States.
Burying angels under new regulations would be part of a one-two knock-out blow for this group of more than 300,000 higher-income Americans who invest directly into start-up companies. The Obama administration’s tax-increase policies would be the other blow, as I testified to the Senate earlier this year.
Angels have played a crucial role in America’s dynamic job-creating economy over the decades. Policymakers would be absolutely crackers to screw up such a successful part of our innovation economy. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

By Timothy B. LeeI haven’t been following the debate over Sen. Dodd’s financial overhaul closely enough to have an opinion on the overall package, but Mike Masnick flags one aspect of the legislation that seems really troubling. Bob Litan explains:
Under existing law, startup companies can raise money easily and quickly from “accredited investors” — individuals with substantial wealth or income. There is no need for the companies or the investors to gain approval from any state or regulatory official.
All of this would change if Section 926 of the Dodd bill is included in any final reform legislation. That section would require, for the first time, companies seeking angel investment to make a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, which would hav...

I am an angel investor and have invested in 3 startups so far - Inventurus Knowledge Solutions; Yos Technologies; and Plus91.So why do doctors become angel investors ?For one thing, I am curious and enjoy learning. I know lots about IVF ( since I have been doing this for over 20 years now !) and it's fun to learn about new areas and other fields - it helps to keep me young and on my toes !It also helps that I have clever friends who are entrepreneurs and angel investors. Thus, my investment in Inventurus is thanks to Rakesh Jhunjhunwalla ; while the one in Yos is because of Rajesh Jain . ( The Plus91 is my own initiative !)I can use their expertise to get a second opinion on how to evaluate investment opportunities ; and they also provide a sounding board which gives me more confidence in ...

Image via Wikipedia

With all the bad news floating around, lets hear what science says about happiness. While there is no magic here, statistics show a trend towards this sort of behavior when a person reports they are happy.

Which came first? Happiness or happy behavior? In my experience, happiness is a state of mind relatively unrelated to events. A person who values his life based more on who he is, appreciates what he has, who takes concrete steps towards his goals, and makes a conscious effort to see his glass half full, rather than half empty more often reports being happy.

AlterNet

"In the last few years, psychologists and researchers have been digging up hard data on a question previously left to philosophers: What makes us happy? Researchers like the father-son team Ed Diener...

Say what? This advertising concept may fly right over your head. But a little-known company called JetAngel is locked in a nasty trademark battle with Pfizer after placing the Viva Viagra logo on a missile that was paraded through Manhattan last month and even stopped in front of the drugmaker’s 42nd Street headquarters.
Why? JetAngel specializes in an unusual form of outdoor advertising - placing logos on military equipment that is transported around for visibility. The concept “takes the target marketing capabilities of mobile billboards and adds an experience for consumers to achieve the ultimate viewer captivation. It is a new, non-traditional outdoor medium that has no competition. We can capture the consumer’s attention and engage them one-on-one with an advertising...

My life before 9/11…..well about 4 months before.
This seems like such a boring week compared to the last one. No Tura Satana, no Midnight Meat Train, no Fetish Fair, no failed attempt to get a photo with Stephan Dion. It seems rather quiet.
The city is gearing up for the Toronto Film Festival, or for those in the know, TIFF. I’ve never really participated in the festival. When I think of it, I think of the hundreds of people lined up waiting to get in to where ever they are going, all the while reading books and stuff like that.
However there are some parties that go on, and I’ll see if I can get to any. This is all new to me, so I’m not sure how successful I’ll be, but it’s worth a shot.
Being the long weekend, I would have thought there would have bee...

Life is often a struggle. Many of us who live with daily health problems know this all too well. All of us who share our stories and our lives here at HealthTalk.com do so in order to enrich our own lives and the lives of others. The vast majority of us write about our own problems with a few exceptions. One of those exceptions was a courageous outgoing and sunny-faced young woman named Donna Gregory. She wrote about her husband’s illness and its effect on both of them, as a young couple and as parents to their 4-year-old twins, Bobby and Amanda.
The Ashley Treatment, Revisited

Ashley X is a Seattle area girl whose parents, fearing how to take care of her as she grew older and bigger, had doctors (including endocrinologist Dr. Daniel Gunther, who died last fall) perform the “Ashley Treatment,” in which her uterus and breast buds were removed and estrogen given to her. The “treatment” occurred a few years ago and was described by Ashley’s parents online on a website in which they referred to her as a “pillow angel” which they call a “new category of disability” and which is defined as:
“people with a cognitive and mental developmental level that will never exceed that of a 6-month old child as well as associated extreme physical limitations, so they will never be able to walk or talk or in some cases even hold up...

Seeking Cash to Launch a Brainchild?

In the last few days I’ve spoken hard core cash … to people across several fields. Some spoke of steady revenue streams … that pay their daily costs … without much more. Others hoped that dollars would come to them … before their crunch set in too deep. A smaller group spoke of searching out financial streams … to fund some promising brainchild. Interestingly, this brainchild bunch … was often stopped short by what they saw as financial flaws. They hadn’t found any fortunes reportedly risked by angel investors, in spite of entrepreneurs who say it's there. They’d wasted money on firms with quick fixes that never came. They’d exhausted their own good credit … which allowed them better interest rates...

Well, the last week or so has been pretty good for Buddy Boy (and for us). We've all settled back into our somewhat regular routines, and our days have been fairly uneventful. So I guess I'm ready to relate what happened almost three weeks ago now. I'm not a guy that gets rattled (shaken up) very easily. Just a month ago I pretty much laughed off an incident when Buddy Boy got ahold of Liz's car keys and started up the car in the garage. But this incident I'm going to describe really upset me, and I'm only now getting my sense of equilibrium back.I awoke at about 5:15 AM (my usual time). As soon as I exited our bedroom to go to the bathroom down the hall I smelled burnt popcorn. I immediately got a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach and proceeded downstairs. I saw (and smelled) the f...
