How is this for grave conditions in the workplace? A Baxter Healthcare unit was fined $371,250 for “deliberate and willful” safety violations that resulted in the death of a technician and serious injury to two others, according to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. All together, there were four willful citations issued, indicating intentional violation or knowledge of a violation.
“We will not tolerate employers who intentionally sacrifice the safety of their workers,” California Department of Industrial Relations acting director Christine Baker says in a statement. “Our goal is to prevent these needless tragedies and ensure employers live up to their responsibility of protecting their workers.”
Here’s what happened: On January 21, a 3...

By Jim HarperThe Los Angeles Times has a good article on California’s move to require Amazon and other out-of-state retailers to collect taxes for it. Good because it accurately portrays what’s happening. Many such stories will say that California is seeking to tax Amazon. In fact, says the headline, “California Tells Online Retailers to Start Collecting Sales Taxes From Customers.”
You see, Californians generally don’t pay their “use taxes“—the alternative to sales taxes, for things brought into the state from outside. If the tax authorities tried to collect use taxes, going door to door to tally up the goods that haven’t yet been taxed, there would be bedlam.
So they want out-of-state companies that sell into California to collect the...

Lots of people experience panic attacks. For some people, it can get so bad that they also get agoraphobia — the fear of leaving one’s house. So I’m happy to introduce Panic About Anxiety with Summer Beretsky, a blog that will explore panic, agoraphobia and even topics about general anxiety in upcoming entries.
If you’re not familiar with Summer, you can check out her archives at the World of Psychology blog. She is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where she received her Master of Arts degree in Communication. She enjoys writing about her experiences with anxiety, panic, and Paxil. She contributes to the World of Psychology blog here on PsychCentral and has written for the Los Angeles Times. You can follow her on Twitter @summerberetsky. You can read more about her here.

By Tad DeHavenLocal officials, like their federal and state counterparts, spend other people’s money. Policymakers are naturally unlikely to spend other people’s money as carefully as they would their own. This situation is exacerbated when local officials spend money obtained from federal taxpayers. At least when local taxpayers foot the bill, they have an incentive to keep an eye on how their money is spent. That incentive is largely nonexistent when the money comes from Washington.
HUD community development programs illustrate what happens when the federal government severs the relationship between local officials and local taxpayers. Originally targeted to large cities in decline, community development funding is spread widely to communities rich and poor, large and small.

By Christopher PrebleDoyle McManus at the Los Angeles Times highlights the zigging and zagging of some leading Republican presidential contenders when it comes to war with Libya.
Particularly noteworthy is Newt Gingrich. "Two weeks ago," McManus writes:
the former House speaker and possible presidential candidate denounced Obama for not intervening forcefully against Kadafi.
"This is a moment to get rid of [Kadafi]," he urged. "Do it. Get it over with."
Then Obama intervened in Libya. Was Gingrich pleased?
"It is impossible to make sense of the standard for intervention in Libya except opportunism and news media publicity," Gingrich said Sunday. "Iran and North Korea are vastly bigger threats…. There are a lot of bad dictators doing bad things."
That sounded like a flip-flop, so I aske...

In an unusual move, the California Insurance Commissioner has intervened, or joined, a whistleblower lawsuit that was filed in 2007 by three former Bristol-Myers Squibb employees, who charged the drugmaker with bribing doctors to prescribe its meds - Abilify, Avapro, Glucophage, Plavix, BuSpar, Pravachol and others. In all, private insurers in the state paid more than $3.5 billion to cover the drugs.
“This sort of fraud has long plagued our health insurance system, leading to billions of dollars annually in added health care costs nationally,” Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones says in a statement. “Besides the obvious and deplorable ethical violations in such cases, health care fraud also leads to higher premiums for consumers and an unnecessary and unjust increase in hea...

By David BoazIn today's Los Angeles Times I write that social conservatives are pointing to real problems, but the only policy solutions they discuss are completely irrelevant to what they call "the high cost of a dysfunctional society":
. . . Reducing the incidence of unwed motherhood, divorce, fatherlessness, welfare and crime would be a good thing. So why the focus on issues that would do nothing to solve the "breakdown of the basic family structure" and the resulting "high cost of a dysfunctional society"? Well, solving the problems of divorce and unwed motherhood is hard. And lots of Republican and conservative voters have been divorced. A constitutional amendment to ban divorce wouldn't go over very well, even with the social conservatives. Far better to pick on a small group, a gr...

Patrick Soon-Shiong, a billionaire who cut a controversial profile in the pharmaceutical industry, has reemerged and purchased Vitality, a private company with a device designed to remind patients to take their meds. Known as GlowCaps, these use wireless technology that is housed in the cap to generate reminders and refill alerts in the form of phone calls, e-mails and ringtones, as well as usage reports for docs.
The move reflects the ongoing preoccupation with patient adherence in the pharmaceutical industry. A recent report by the New England Healthcare Institute found that poor adherence costs the US as much as $290 billion a year in unnecessary health care spending (full disclosure: we are co-sponsoring a conference on this topic in May). In general, the weak economy has meant fewer p...

Art imitates life, and there’s nothing more hilarious than art imitating a woman in labor. I “stumbled” upon this incredible video and was in awe. Thea Monyee and her husband, GaKnew Rowel, are talented young poets who share their parenting experience at a Def Poetry session in Los Angeles.
What amazed me is the accuracy and clarity of Thea as she describes the laboring experience. Her comments regarding the labor-inducing medication Pitocin are both hilarious and laser-sharp and her description of the epidural placement were reminiscent of my days as an OB/GYN resident. Oh, would I get annoyed with the anesthesiology residents who couldn’t place the catheter correctly into a patient’s back on the first try.
Thea and her husband are a delight to watch. Have you had a similar...

Last week, Nintendo became the latest consumer electronics maker to warn that kids shouldn’t use their three-dimensional image-based gaming devices because they may have a negative impact on development of the human visual system.
The warning came just a month before the company’s much anticipated release of the 3DS, which is just such a device that features a 3.5-inch screen which can create 3-D images without the need for special glasses. The 3DS is Nintendo’s most anticipated new product since it released the iconic Wii gaming device in 2006.
Sony’s PlayStation3, a similar product that requires glasses to create the 3-D effect, already carries a similar warning, as do 3-D TV sets made by Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic.
Nintendo’s warning applies to kids that are six years old...

Women who own individual healthcare policies, please take note. Should you become pregnant in the future, your individual healthcare policy might not cover your pregnancy.
A recent article in the Los Angeles Times by Michelle Andrews was revealing. Andrews described the plight of a North Carolina biology teacher who subsequently left teaching after the birth of her twins. She became a small business owner and was covered under individual health insurance policies. However, when she became pregnant again, she had a rude awakening. Despite paying an insurance premium of $400 per month, her pregnancy wasn’t covered unless she had paid for a special rider, prior to becoming pregnant. Since half of all pregnancies are “unplanned” how can you pay for coverage six months in advance of an u...

By Michael F. CannonHere’s a poor, unsuccessful letter I sent to the editor of the Los Angeles Times:
Three and a half million Californians may become eligible for subsidized private health insurance in 2014 under ObamaCare [“3.5 million Californians would be eligible for healthcare tax credits, study finds,” October 6], but those subsidies will not “slash the cost” of their health insurance. As ObamaCare causes health insurance premiums to rise by as much as 30 percent, the private-insurance subsidies will shift those costs to taxpayers. A bipartisan majority of Americans opposes ObamaCare in part because such shell games increase costs rather than reduce them.
Cost-Slashing? No, Cost-Shifting. is a post from Cato @ Liberty - Cato Institute Blog (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Rates of rectal cancer in those younger than 40 have been increasing, the LA Times reported recently.
Researchers studied data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Registry and looked at the change in rectal and colon cancer incidence in those under 40 from 1973 to 2005. Overall rates were low, but while colon cancer incidence remained constant, rectal cancer incidence increased by an average of 3.8 percent annually, the authors reported in the journal Cancer.
The authors didn’t advocate routine screening in those under 40, but did recommend that physicians be more alert to the possibility of rectal cancer in those presenting with symptoms such as rectal bleeding, according to the Times. (LA Times)

With back-to-school time around the corner, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning about the risk for heat-related illness in young athletes, especially football players, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Coaches and parents should be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stroke, dehydration and other problems, and fluid replacement formulas should be used during practices and workouts, among other precautions, the LA Times said.

By Michael F. CannonThe Obama administration announced yesterday its plans for implementing ObamaCare’s mandate that consumers purchase first-dollar coverage for preventive services. The press release reads (emphasis added):
Administration Announces Regulations Requiring New Health Insurance Plans to Provide Free Preventive Care
Of course the administration would emphasize that consumers will pay nothing for these services at the moment of service, and elide the fact that this mandate will increase their health insurance premiums. The administration’s use of the word “free” is what we call spin.
What’s surprising–and more than a little disappointing–is that journalists and headline writers at major media organizations would repeat the administrat...

Karen Caplan writes:
Does Kuznicki (or anyone else) really think that the goal of a healthy diet is simply to minimize the total number of calories consumed? (Perhaps these are the same folks who swear by Taco Bell’s Drive-Thru Diet.)
A 12-ounce serving of whole milk contains 12 grams of protein, along with 45% of the calcium and 36% of the vitamin D you need each day. The same amount of soy milk also has 12 grams of protein and 14% of the daily recommended intake of iron.
Care to guess how many vitamins and minerals are in a can of Coke?

You might be the cleanest clean person you know, but we’ve got some bad news anyway. You’ve got trillions of microbial bacteria just hanging out inside of you. Well, not exactly hanging out. They’re working pretty hard, influencing whether we make or burn fat, and how many calories we take from our food.
According to the Los Angeles Times, researchers have realized that there are links between gut bacteria and weight metabolism in mice. Though there are links among humans as well, scientists aren’t as certain about the intricacies. We bet that once researchers nail down the exact science between gut bacteria and weight loss in people, we’ll be seeing even more commercials for yogurts that taste just like cream-filled chocolate donuts – and supposedly help yo...

We really didn’t think this whole World Cup vuvuzela situation couldn’t get any worse. That constant buzzing, the wasted plastic, and the possible transmission of germ-laden saliva. Ew. Then last Friday, we showed you a video about how the vuvuzela controversy is dividing the staff of ESPN The Magazine. Now, a woman in Cape Town has actually ruptured her throat by blowing on the plastic horn too hard.
Don’t worry, it’s only a small tear, but still – this whole mess is really getting out of control. And does anyone actually like the vuvuzelas besides the people tooting them? Okay, we admit it. We like saying vuvuzela.

Artificial Sweeteners vs. Sugar: More Risk Than Reward?

If you check out the candy aisle in any grocery store, chances are you’ll see a growing number of sugar-free sweets. While this may seem like the perfect solution to reconcile a sweet tooth with good nutrition, eating foods that are artificially sweetened may be worse for you than the real thing.
First of all, removing sugar from something doesn’t remove any of its other unhealthy substances like fat or refined carbohydrates. And the process of artificially sweetening may actually introduce chemicals into a food, which could lead to upset stomach and diarrhea. Plus, artificial sweeteners also may make you crave more food.
We know – pretty confusing. So we’re just going to keep eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, and then when we i...

Iams Cat Food – Proctor & Gamble voluntarily recalled some Iams canned cat food for having insufficient levels of thiamine. (Los Angeles Times blog)

McDonald’s Shrek-Themed Drinking Glasses – OK, so this one was last week, but McDonald’s is still getting lots of flak for their recall of their not-so-Happy Meal toys, which contained potentially dangerous levels of cadmium, a carcinogen that can cause kidney ailments. Hunter-Philanthropist may seem like an unlikely breed of modern man, but the Sportsman’s Channel (yes, that is a channel) is encouraging just that. The channel has a new non-profit initiative to feed the hungry called Hunt.Fish.Feed., and the basic idea is that hunters bring their kill (and fishers bring their catch) to impoverished people in Los Angeles, including those in shelters.
The thought of a burly hunter slamming a dead deer carcass onto a soup kitchen table make us snicker, but it’s hard to criticize a program whose goal is to feed the hungry. We do wonder if the organization could have used the money spent on bullets, transportation, permits, and butchering to get a lot of fruits and vegetables for L.A.’s hungry, though.

Chapter One: Baseball
Opening Day for Major League Baseball is April 5, which dovetails nicely with the beginning of this series. It’s also a good starting point because baseball has always induced the nostalgic sandlot memory-lane-strolls of aging white men like Doris Kearns Goodwin. And the season goes on for-freaking-ever, so you can knock all three books out of the park by the All-Star break (July).
The Natural by Bernard Malamud
The Stats: For all the ink spilled about America’s “national pastime” (the one the NFL usurped about 30 years ago), there are very few great baseball novels. The Natural is one of them. You’ve seen the movie; you know the story. A 19-year-old prodigy, Roy Hobbs, gets shot by a mystery woman, drops out of sight, then magically reappe...

A Facelift is a surgical procedure that combats facial skin laxity and sagging. It is used in cases of mid-face sagging, creases in the lower eyelids and from the nose to the edges of the mouth, displaced or fallen fat, loss of muscle tone and loose facial skin. Candidacy is determined after consultation with a specialist, usually a surgeon. It is important to seek a reputed, certified specialist, to ensure the best possible job.
Funemployed, Or Alone and Miserable?

These days, getting laid off almost feels like a collective condition. NPR’s “Weekend Edition Sunday” reports a new “recession slang” born within the past 12 months; and panels like “Funemployment: Success Stories From the Laid-Off Community” at this year’s SXSW conference and festival make the topic feel like just another band on the music scene. Jobless? You’re practically a rock star! But, much like life on the road, this reality has its downsides.
In a recent New York Times “Well” blog post, Tara Parker-Pope faces this dilemma head on: “The Isolation of Unemployment” mentions former Los Angeles Times columnist Al Martinez, who lost his job in January, and finds his current predicament far from fun. He thinks ...

By Neal McCluskeyA good vocabulary word–and an important rhetorical device–that kids should learn is “hyperbole.” Indeed, in Los Angeles the teachers union has apparently thought illustrating hyperbole so important that the union has, on its own time, provided a crystal clear example of it. Talking about a proposed 11.75-percent pay cut to control the Los Angeles Unified School District’s red ink flood, United Teachers of Los Angeles elementary vice president Julie Washington declared that she’s afraid “with a 12 percent pay cut we’ll see homeless teachers…”
That’s a deliberate exaggeration, alright! According to a February Los Angeles Daily News report, the average LAUSD teacher makes $63,000 a year. Even the lo...

Right on the heels of my post the other day discussing the error in inviting terrorism reporting, here’s another video (and suspicious-activity-reporting Web site) produced by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The production values in this video are hipper, and L.A. appears to have its share of actors willing to look concerned about terrorism. But really, the attacks of September 11, 2001 were all the Public Service Announcement we needed to encourage reporting of genuine suspicions.
Asking amateurs for tips about terrorism will have many wasteful and harmful results, like racial and ethnic discrimination, angry neighbors turning each other in, and—given the rarity of terrorism—lots and lots of folks just plain getting it wrong. People with expertise—even in very limi...

A Loved One’s Photo Helps Reduce Your Pain

Previous psychological research has demonstrated that the mere presence of a loved one — a partner, family member or friend — can help reduce one’s subjective experience of physical pain (for instance, during a medical procedure), versus experiencing similar pain while alone. This research has been replicated over the years in various settings and in such a way as to suggest that this indeed might be a causal relationship. That is, the presence of a loved one actually helps reduce our feelings of pain.
What is this same phenomenon could occur without a loved one being present? Would a photo suffice to also help reduce pain?
Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (Master et al., 2009) designed an elegantly simple laboratory experiment to find out. They ...

America’s large urban school districts are often the lowest performing, least efficient, and most resistant to change. The poster children for this reality are perhaps Detroit and Washington, DC, but the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has long been in the running as well.
Yesterday, there was a sign that LAUSD would like to get out of that race for the bottom: the district’s school board voted 6 to 1 in favor of a plan that would hand up to a third of its public schools over to private management. Ignoring for a moment the question of how well this policy will work, it is categorically, undeniably, a sign of change. In the past, such private contracting arrangements in large districts have usually been the result of state or mayoral takeovers. This is the first...

Healing takes effort and only those patients who commit themselves to their alcohol rehab programs can expect to achieve meaningful recovery. In the end, alcohol rehab can only work for you if you’re willing to work for alcohol rehab. The key, of course, lies in finding an alcohol rehabilitation facility that can help you learn to yourself.
Some Los Angeles alcohol rehabs baby their clients. This is a mistake. Alcohol rehabilitation is most successful when alcohol rehab patients are sufficiently empowered to drive their own recoveries. As you weigh your alcohol rehab center options, then, it’s vital that you find a place that really does have your best interests at heart. In the fight against addiction, there’s no substitute for allies who understand the importance of personal initia...

Dogs have truly proven they are man’s best friend. A study led by a nurse Kathie Cole, at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center used dogs to interact with heart patients.
The study conducted by Kathie, used therapeutic dogs. There were 76 patients with an average age of 57, that had been hospitalized with heart failure.
Patients received a visit from a volunteer with a dog, just a volunteer or no visit at all; physiological responses were measured before, during and after the visits. The findings were that anxiety dropped 24%, in the patients that were visited by a volunteer with a dog. There was only a 10% drop in patients when visited by a volunteer and those with no visits stayed the same.

“Turpentine’s a hard line! huh!”
And so, with music and magic, the world premiere of “Turpentine Jake,” staged at Loyola Marymount’s Del Rey Theatre, takes off on a smart flight of legendary scope and impact, a skillfully-crafted historical drama of character and social justice that doesn’t depend on a car-chase mentality for suspense. To the contrary, the soaring use of language in gem-like self-narratives, poetry and songs, accentuates the action.
Set in the”debt peonage” system of the Florida Turpentine camps in 1937, the story is dramatized by the grandson of one of those workers, James E. Hurd Jr. (who also co-directs with Jim Holmes and stars as Jake) and writing partner and producer Linda Bannister, who together conducted extensive reasearch and interview...

I like being closer to the beach, having lots of things to do, and the weather (mostly--I'd love some rain once in a while). But the people are different, not as open. They always seem angry, like they never get what they want. A bunch of spoiled children with an entitlement complex. I've never seen a city so fascinated with itself so much, either. I think most Angelenos expect outsiders to know where all of the neighborhoods are, know things about certain places, etc. Like we all pay as much attention as they do. And the namedropping! That has always been a pet peeve of mine, too. Like who you know makes you more interesting somehow? Sorry, if you're a bore, you're...

Hey, peeps, out there in the world somewhere . . .I've been gone for some time now, mostly because I really felt confused over what I could safely write about. Allow me to explain, as briefly as I can. My husband works in television, and although there are dozens of stations around the country and my blog is so seldom read, the community is actually very small. It wouldn't take much for someone to put pieces together and determine his identity. So, when the biggest news in my life has to do with clandestine job interviews, a possible interstate move, secret freelance work for competing networks, there isn't much I can blog about.
