I’ve written before about this topic. It was difficult to dispose of the unused prescription drugs when my brother-in-law died. I was not involved in my mother’s old drug disposal, but can’t imagine it was easy (if done at all). Old and unused drugs don’t just happen when someone dies. They can occur because your surgeon gave you a script for more pain pills than you needed. This is commonly done as it is difficult to gage just how much pain someone is going to have postop. Then there are the pills unused because you didn’t tolerate the side effects or had an allergic reaction. Other are left over when patients are placed on new /different drugs for their conditions. We have been reminded frequently of late that prescription drugs are no...

Fight Breast Cancer with Pomegranates

I love a lot of different fruits. Oranges are my favorite, but I love strawberries and blueberries too, but pomegranates are a special treat. When I was a little girl, every now and then my mom would buy one, which was a big deal when you consider we were living in a little tiny mining town in northern Ontario at the time. She gave my sister and me each half and sat us outside to pick through the juicy seeds. I’m sure part of her plan was to keep us occupied for a very long time. Since then I lost my patience for that delightful fruit until this fall. I couldn’t get enough pomegranates, I ate pretty much one a week until early this year when they went out of season.
I also love pomegranate juice. I keep a little bottle in my fridge all year round. When I am out to dinner or a speci...

This blog, Specified Life, deals with the general topic of data specification (including data organization, data description, data retrieval and data sharing) in the life sciences and in medicine. Beyond data sharing issues, it covers a range of topics that might be of interest to biomedical researchers. All of the blog entries have been collected and organized into a convenient web-linked archive.- Jules J. Berman (Source: Specified Life)

I have been in the breast cancer business for six and a half years. I call it “the business” because of how it affects my life, not because of the science or medicine. In all that time I have held to the hope of a cure for breast cancer. Not a treatment, not just a drug to eliminate risk; a real cure. In the past four years I have read and written about research studies and findings and breakthroughs. I have even blogged about British scientists that said there would be a cure in two years – that was in 2009. Things are very quiet right now about breast cancer and the quiet is deafening.
We are in a war. The war against cancer. Remember, Nixon declared war on cancer and no one to my knowledge has declared a truce. When you are in a war you need to know what is happening on the front ...

BTR: Doctor: Do You Speak “Flower”?, 1.26.10 0900 PST, hosted by @2healthguru

What is flower? At this time it’s an abstraction—a placeholder for several concepts centering on what would healthcare look like if…? And, more specifically what would personal health information (PHI) look like if…? A flower was chosen as the abstraction because it is easily and universally understood, regardless of language, anywhere in the world—a flower is a flower. Where a flower is flower carries the additional abstraction that there is a common ground—characterized by property and implementation. While a fluid and dynamic idea, this informed panel will provide both history and context for its genesis and diverse unfolding narrative. Join Dirk Stanley, MD, @dir...

Google Wave takes some getting use to, especially trying to keep tract of conversations and the manner in which waves proliferate. Over the last month I’ve participated in ever increasing number of wave conversation and on occasion have gotten lost. My solution at this time (until Google Wave tools start appearing) is to create a “Waves of Interest” site. You can sort by date the wave started, title of the wave, or by a rudimentary tags.
I’m using Google Apps to creates the subdomains: wiki.symtym.net and wave.symtym.net. (Source: quanta vie)

Because of concerns about the safety and efficacy of the new vaccine against 2009 H1N1 influenza (”swine flu”) Marc Pelletier, PhD from Futures in Biotech and I teamed up to record a public service announcement to encourage vaccination. This announcement addresses safety and side effects, which are expected to be similar to those from any influenza vaccine. Ginger Campbell MD, an emergency room physician, and host of Brain Science Podcast and Sciencepodcasters.org, was kind enough to add her recommendations to the announcement.
I encourage you to listen the the announcement and share it with others. You are welcome to place it on websites, blogs, and podcasts. A copy of the mp3 file can be downloaded here. (Source: virology blog)

That blog is The Adventures of Bob the Nurse and was started by none other than Keith at Digital Doorway.
Bob the Nurse is an action figure that lives a very, well, adventurous life. His blog is a photo blog depicting his various antics.
I’m very fond of this concept (you know, stealing your neighbor’s garden gnome and taking pictures of it in front of Niagara Falls or some such place). When I moved to California, I stole borrowed took the coffee pot from the dialysis office with me. I bought it a little wig and some googly eyes and took pictures of it at interesting places along the way as I drove here from the midwest. The dialysis nurses were some serious pranksters, so this was ...

Its been five years since the start of the symtym blog, this will be the last post. However, the blogging will continue at quanta vie. As many know, it is at times difficult (in terms of content generation) to keep a blog going, let alone trying to keep two blogs going with content. quanta vie was started in January 2009, pretty much as a fresh start, although several factors played significantly:

desire to start a clean (technically) blog where everything is written in strict XHTML;
transient problem with Russian porn on symtym (my fault: enabled FTP), resulting in very messed up Google Analytics;
improved blogging work–flow using MarsEdit and BBEdit;
no need to go back and clean up all the bad HTML in symtym, lack of tags, etc.; and
five years for one endeavor seems about right.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.
I’ve just found my dream job - getting paid to live on an beautiful island in a luxurious villa for six months. The money’s really good, the climate is perfect, and all I’ll have to do is wander around the local area, exploring all it has to offer and report back weekly via blogs, photo diaries, video updates and media interviews. I’d all have to collect the mail, feed the fish, and clean the pool.
No, I’m not making this up. It’s ‘fair dinkum’ as the Aussies would say, aimed to promote Queensland, and in particular the Great Barrier Reef and Hamilton Island to the world.
I could do that. I want to do that.
But there’s a small problem. It’s no secret and everyone, and I mean everyone, ...

Check out this new slim, sleek, rechargeable sonic toothbrush from Oral-B.
It’s just the type of present my dentist would like to see everyone get for Christmas.
The fact sheet states that the lightweight Oral B Pulsonic toothbrush offers maximum maneuverability while providing more than 27,000 gentle sonic vibrations per minute. That’s a whole lot of teeth cleaning with minimum effort. And you don’t even have to think about how long you’ve been brushing for – there’s a timer that activates when the recommended two minute brushing time has been reached. Plus there’s an additional professional timer signals at 30-second intervals to encourage thorough brushing of the four quadrants of your mouth.
Want one?
Well, you might be in luck.

It’s not easy eating healthy during the holiday season.
Let’s face it. You spend extra time in the kitchen cooking. You spend extra time sitting around the dinner table catching up with friends and family. And then, of course, visiting friends and family usually involves constant snacking and eating as well.
It’s all good but by the new year, most of us are sick of the sight of food and definitely had enough of spending time in the kitchen.
Which makes this latest Healthbolt giveaway a real winner.
It’s a family pass for four to one of the 111 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes Restaurants located in 15 States across the country.
These salad-buffet style restaurants offer fresh produce and salads, made-from-scratch soups, hot-tossed pastas, freshly baked breads and muffins, fre...

Now for those that don’t have a pedometer (me included), here’s some general guidelines to help you work out how many steps you’re taking in a day:

Is anyone ever really happy with their body image?
Probably not.
After all, how can we be when we are constantly bombarded with images that fuel our discontent with our bodies.
As a result, we often put ourselves at risk to obtain a perfect body in the hopes of having a perfect life.
Enter Pat Ballard, the Queen of the Rubenesque Romances. She writes writes romance novels and short stories with Big Beautiful Heroines to show that plus-size women are just as sexy, romantic, and exciting as their slim sisters.
But Pat wasn’t always this comfortable with the large body. As a young woman, she almost died trying to starve her body into a societally approved size. But having, through the years, made peace with the fact that she was a ‘perfect size twenty-two!’ Pat has written a b...

Congratulations Audrey. You should be receiving an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
By the way, I have a sure fire why to avoid stress these holidays.
Hibernate.
Okay, so that might not work for most people.
But remember, when you are getting stressed, the best thing to do is take time out for yourself. Try to relax, treat yourself to a massage or manicure, take a long walk somewhere away from crowds and shops, meet friends for coffee or lunch, watch a funny movie or sitcom, and just sit back and breathe.
And don’t forget, ‘every day is a giveaway’ this month a...

I’m not much of a gym person. I’ve been known to join and then never quite get around to getting there.
I use pretty much every excuse under the sun not to go – it’s too cold, it’s too hot, it’s too wet, it’s snowing, there’s no time, it takes too much time, I have to clean the house (yes, I even resort to that one just to get out of going to the gym).
But I’m okay with exercising at home. There’s a crosstrainer sitting in the home office and often, especially when I’m suffering from writer’s block, I do 5 or 6 kilometers and not only feel refreshed but also unblocked. And then there are numerous exercise videos and DVDs cluttering up the TV cabinet, all of which get used from time to time.
But just when I think I have enough exercise DVD’s to last me a life tim...

It’s all about yoga today.
First, I posted about the winner of the Yoga Paws.
And now, I’m posting about Healthbolt’s latest giveaway – a Yoga DVD. But it’s not just any old yoga DVD. This one is by Sadie Nardini, director of East West Yoga in New York City and founder of Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga, a form of yoga considered a ‘calorie-torcher’ by Time Out New York. Apparently it can transform the body faster in 60 minutes than most yoga does in 90 minutes.
This Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga:Power Hour DVD is full on and features a 40-minute Floor Flow, Core Salutations (Warm + Energize + Tone), a 20-Minute Wall Flow, Core Stretch (Invert + Detox + Stretch ) plus a BEGINNER COMMENTARY on Alignment Tips and Modifications for Basic Level!

Looks like everyone (including me) wants a set of Yoga Paws. But unfortunately, there can only be one winner. And according to the random number selector, that person is…
Brooke
….who made me think she was talking about me when she wrote in the comments ‘I am terminally uncoordinated and these would really help me look semi-knowledgeable in yoga class. :)’
Congratulations Brooke and here’s hoping that these Yoga Paws will break that un-coordination spell!
You should be getting an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
Brooke, you need to contact me here in the comment with a new email address as the one you originally commented with is not working. My email to you is just bouncing back.
By the way, while we are the yoga theme, you really ...

Yes, you read that right. The PR organizer of the Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program giveaway had so much fun reading the comments that you all left that she contacted the sponsors and organized for not one but two Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program sets to be given away. So I suggested that maybe she’d like to choose the winners.
Yes, I know it breaks with the usual ‘select a winner by random number selector’ but it’s so much fun playing Mrs Santa Claus that I thought I’d share it around. As you know, studies have proven that giving is good for your health.
Here’s what she said about choosing the winners ‘Picking them was harder than I thought! I wish I could give one to them all because the comments were so great and some were really funny.’

Okay, I’ll be honest. I don’t usually spend much time checking my heart rate when exercising. I’m usually too busy simply trying to keep breathing and not collapsing.
But I’ve just discovered a gadget that would probably let me do both. It’s the Timex Ironman Race Trainer, a heart rate monitor system that allows the user (exerciser) to wirelessly download their workout data. Once downloaded, you can then analyze the information to find out how to improve and enhance your workouts, track your progress and attain any fitness goals you have.
Here’s what you get with the Timex Ironman Race Trainer kit…
Race Trainer digital heart rate monitor
Digital 2.4 heart rate sensor and strap
Data Xchanger USB device, and
Free access to Timex Ironman online training site.

Are you a walker or a runner?
Me, I’m a walker.
Whenever the weather’s good, I head for the beach, the park, or the forest to walk for an hour or two. I have no technique – I simply put one foot in front of the other. I thought that’s all I needed to do to get fit and healthy.
But having spent a little time reading up about ChiWalking, I’m starting to change my mind. Walking should be much more than simply one foot in front of the other.
ChiWalking is a unique program that utilizes the principles and orientation as Yoga, Pilates, and T’ai Chi to help people work with core muscles, integrate the mind and body, and focuse on overall and long term performance and well-being.
Now, I haven’t had a chance to try out the ChiWalking program but I’m seriously thinking about it.

Any fitness greenies out there?
This giveaway is for you.
We all know that drinking water is healthy. Study after study has told us so.
Unfortunately, this lead to a multi-million dollar bottle water industry which neither good for the environment nor your wallet, as this video shows….

Did you know that more than 99.9 percent of Americans live in homes where unlimited amounts of fresh, treated water is available?
Tapping into this, Eric Yaverbaum and Mark DiMassimo launched the national Tappening ad campaign to re-brand tap water as safe, affordable, and ever so good for the environment.
They created thought provoking ads to encourage people to stop buying bottled water and start getting their water straight from the tap. And along the way, they started produced and ...

If you think this giveaway is for the family pet, think again.

Yoga-Paws are basically mitts that you wear on your hands and feet while doing Yoga. They can easily take the place of the traditional yoga mat and are small enough to fit in a gym bag, overnight bag, or the glove compartment of your car for quick access. In other words, perfect for anyone on the go.
Yoga Paws were created to prevent any slippage of your hands and feet during your Yoga practices. They are made up of two layers; the outside layer is made of an eco-friendly material that is strong to keep you in place and also provides cushion for your wrists and hands. The inner layer is made up of a cloth liner made from 80% polyester and 20% nylon, which provides additional support and a...

Sugar.
It’s everywhere.
In fact, it’s almost impossible to avoid and according to Dr Scott Olson, in his book Sugarettes, it’s as addictive as cigarettes.

I’ve just finished reading Sugarettes and I got to say, it was a real eye opener. Who knew that sugar was so prevalent in society today? Seems that everything we eat and drink has sugar in it and the more processed the food, the more the sugar content.
In Sugarettes, Scott Olson looks at how sugar affects the body and why we should look at it as an addiction and a leading cause of not only obesity but also other medical illnesses of our times.
This is a must read for anyone interested in improving their diet and their health.

Healthbolt has three copies of this fascinating book to giveaway to anyone anywher...

Ever live in a place where you know the water is not safe to drink? Where you even use bottled water to clean your teeth? I have and I’ve got to say it’s not fun. I lived in Saudi Arabia for a year and was reliant on bottled water for drinking, cooking, and yes, cleaning my teeth.
But while I found it annoying, at least I did have access to clean water which is more that millions of people around the world have.
The World Health Organizations (WHO) says…
“…1.1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. Unsafe water and inadequate sanitation kills nearly TWO MILLION people each year, mostly children under the age of five.”
That’s way too many people without clean drinking water.
Want to help out? Take the Clean Water Challenge Quiz…

Hands up anyone who, when they are feeling unwell or concerned about a health issue, does a google search?
If you put your hand up, you are in the majority. Seems that these days, instead of heading to the doctor or the local pharmacist, we all head to the internet. It’s quick, convenient, helpful, and apparently, also trackable as a new google tracking tool proves.
Google debuted the Google Flu Trend Tool on Tuesday.
Working on the theory that it’s more likely to be a flu outbreak in places where flu-related search terms are currently popular, this tracking tool follows any increased flu-related search terms to determine where in the U.S. flu outbreaks may be occurring. This information is given to the federal government’s CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Preven...

Michael Crichton was a master storyteller who managed to intergrate science, technology, medicine, and environmental issues into compelling, controversal, and thought provoking stories. He wrote books (State of Fear) I couldn’t put down, movies (Jurassic Park) that scared me, and televisions series (ER) that captivated me.

Kim wrote a recent post about why nurses leave the bedside. She referenced an article that talked about more of the same.
Sinus arrhythmia then wrote a response post about nurses and salary. Both the posts and the article are a very intriguing read.
But of all the reasons a nurse would leave the bedside, one of the biggest reasons must be injuries, and this was not mentioned anywhere at all. There are a few articles about injuries and nurses; feel free to get your facts and figures there.
I personally know of nurses who have had such severe shoulder and back injuries from caring for patients that they required months and months off of work and surgical intervention. I know of one nurse who was kicked in the head by a patient. She was not harmed in any serious way, thank goodness, but the p...

Here’s a little light weekend reading for you!!
The Wildlife Conservation Society released a report a couple of days ago saying that a dozen deadly diseases, all with the potential to have major impact on not only human and animal health but also on global economies (as if the global economy needs any more help in falling apart), could easily spread into new regions as a result of climate change,
The report, The Deadly Dozen: Wildlife Diseases in the Age of Climate Change, highlights 12 deadly diseases that appear likely to spread around the world due to climate-induced temperature and precipitation level changes.

Babesiosis
Cholera
Ebola
Intestinal and external parasites

How could I have missed the Ig Nobel Prizes for the past 18 years ? Not sure what the Ig stands for, these ‘nobel prizes’, which parody the more serious and respected Nobel Peace Prizes, are handed out every October for the ten achievements that ‘first make people laugh, and then make them think’.
So without further ado, here are this year’s recepients…
Chemistry: Sheree Umpierre, Joseph Hill, and Deborah Anderson for finding that Coca-Cola is an effective spermicide. On the other hand, C.Y. Hong, C.C. Shieh, P. Wu and B.N. Chiang proved that it was not.
Nutrition: Massimiliano Zampini and Charles Spence for proving that food tastes better when it sounds good. Focusing on potato chips, they discoverd that crunchier sounding chips tasted better. Their res...

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recover Month and in recognition of this, the bloggers at b5Media’s Health and Wellness Channel have put together their interpretation of the 12 Steps, looking at each step not just from it’s orginal intent but also in relation to their own blog topic. The result is an interesting and informative group of posting that provides ‘food for thought’ in own lives.
We’ve all heard of the 12 Step Program, but most of us won’t be able to recite what each step was. That’s because we are lucky enough not to need to. But for thousands of people around the world, the 12 steps is their world.

Hey everyone,
Guess you figured out by now that Healthbolt’s having a few issues which is making it real difficult to read posts and leave comments.
It’s all to do with technical issues that are way over my head. The b5Media super support team are on to it and working to get Healthbolt back to the way it was. At least today, it’s not longer black and blue…
Regular posting will resume as soon as things are back to normal, which, fingers crossed, will be soon!!!
The review of the Food Matters documentary is sitting in the wings, waiting to be posted.
And for all the Healthbolt Carnival fans, the carnival is now scheduled for Sunday.
Cheers,
Liz and Liberty

Have you heard of the Food Matters documentary?
It’s been called the ‘food equivalent’ of The Inconvenient Truth.
This independently funded film looks at the trillion dollar worldwide ’sickness industry’ and ask why ‘despite the billions of dollars of funding and research into new so-called cures we continue to suffer from a raft of chronic ills and every day maladies.’
Food Matters wants us to think about what we are putting into our bodies and why. Interviews with well known leaders in nutrition and natural healing address the idea that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of nutrition - foods, supplements and detoxification - should be considered in the treatment of chronic illnesses.
So far, I&#821...

Correction Regarding the ‘Medpedia - Coming Soon to A Screen Near You’ Post.

Hey, everyone. Seems I made a typo the other day when writing about the newest online medical encyclopedia ‘Medpedia’.
Seems I added in an ‘ i ‘ where an ‘ i ‘ shouldn’t be.
Now, normally this wouldn’t such a big deal but it turns out adding an ‘i’ to medpedia = medipedia which takes you to a whole different site. A medical site, maybe, but definitely not the website that we wanted to direct you to.
So I’ve gone back and corrected the typo and put in the correct URL as well.
It is http://www.medpedia.com.
That’s the one to watch!!!
Thanks T.Scott, medical librarian, for point out the error my ways…

The interactive quiz offers 4 multi-choice answers to each question and will immediate check your answer with the click of the mouse. And the best part is that it also provides a link to the article that covers that particular topic.

Two Florida mothers, Zephora Haddon and Nycole Sones, have hit on a novel way of providing a voice and protecting those unable to share vital information in an emergency situation.
Noticing that there always seemed to be someone calling for a lost child during their children’s playdates in crowded public places, they put their heads together and came up with a way simple but effective way for children to carry contact information on them - the Eyedentity Label, a temporary tattoo.
It’s a bright red and yellow, 2-inch square design made to stand out and is large enough for important personal data, such as cell phone number or hotel information. Easy to apply, the tattoos last anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks.

Isn’t technology great?
Once you had to wade through heaps of medical texts to find out what symptoms match what disease. Then the internet showed up and you could access the same information much more quickly through the click of the mouse.
And now there is the A.D.A.M., the Symptom Navigator, a web application that has been created for the new Apple iPhone 3G which will allow people to identify health concerns on the go. It doesn’t matter where you are - on the beach, in the air, at the circus -as long as you have network access and a iPhone, you can use it. You simply have to load the Symptom Navigator on the iPhone 3G by visiting http://iphone.adam.com.
Here’s how it works. An image of the human body is on the screen and the user is able to click on the area of the...

I imagine that July 4th, especially with it being a weekend and all, will be a poorly-attended internet day. So with that in mind, I shall save my vast wisdom for a day other than a US National holiday and instead, just wish you a Happy, Happy Independence Day, full of good food, good friends, and appreciation for all this great country has to offer.
If you’re visiting from another country, well, then I wish you a fabulous and relaxing weekend.
Thanks for reading!

Do you ever get hooked into watching an infomercials on television? You’re sitting there, waiting impatiently for the price of the item to come up and just when you think they are going to tell you, there’s an annoying voice saying ‘but wait, there’s more.’
Well, today, I’m that annoying voice saying ‘but wait, there’s more’.
Yesterday, I posted about a chance for a Healthbolt reader to win a ‘free special event luncheon in NYC’ on July 10th. Of course, there was a little catch - you would have to write an unbiased review of the product in question.
Well, we’ve added a sweetener to the deal….
The PR agency is going to provide the winner a ‘fun bag of product goodies’.
Tempted now ?

Calling all New Yorkers and anyone planning on being in the city next week. Healthbolt’s got a free lunch to give away.
Here’s the deal…
I was contacted by a PR Agency to see if I’d like to attend a “first taste moment” of Truvia natural sweetener, the natural, zero-calorie, great-tasting sweetener made from rebiana, the best tasting part of the stevia plant. They are having press briefings and a luncheon to launch their product.
Now I’m never one to turn down a free lunch and I’m quite interested in finding out more about this product having run across the stevia plant at a number of farmer’s markets. But living in New Zealand makes it difficult to do lunch in New York City.
So I suggested to the PR people that I’d like to offer ...

What would you do if you felt your life was falling apart? Most people would somehow pick up the pieces and carry on. But there’s this guy in Australia who has decided he doesn’t want to pick up the pieces. Instead, he wants to ’sell the pieces of his life’ and start a whole new life.
Sounds extreme. But is it really ? People have been starting over forever. Think Pilgrims. Think immigrants.
But Ian Usher’s way of starting over involves selling his life on e-bay…
From Sunday, June 22 for one week, Usher’s life is up for sale on eBay with the package including his $US420,000 ($NZ556,000) three-bedroom house in Perth, Western Australia, a trial for his job at a rug store, his car, motorbike, clothes and even friends.

Remember Lakshmi Tatma, a Indian girl who was born with four arms and four legs. We first wrote about her in December 2007, saying…

*******************NEWSFLASH*******************************
Right after the inagural Healthbolt Carnival last week, we were inundated with new submissions which made having another carnival a necessity. Only this time, we’ve used a lot of editorial discretion. So if you’re post ain’t here, it’s not cause it wasn’t good enough, it was just it didn’t quite fit into the ‘Healthbolt Carnival frame of mind’.
What, you ask, is the Healthbolt Carnival Frame of Mind’? Well, it’s a place where you can find the intriguing, the oddball, the unique, and the newest of health information. And to make it easier, we’ll be adding categories to the submission form to help you see where your post fits.

                                     (Dirty Dancing, 1987)
Well, from the looks of it, Patrick Swayze has taken those words to heart. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year, Patrick has no intention of hidding in the corner. He’s undergone radical chemotherapy treatment at the Standford University Cancer Center in Palo Alto and the word is that the tumor has shrunk but not as much as his doctors had envisioned.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer with the 5 year survival rate of around 5% of those in the advanced stages. However, if diagnosed at the earlier stages and treated aggressively as Patrick’s has been,...

This week is Celebrity Week at the b5Media Health and Wellness Channel and Healthbolt is joining in.
So expect to see some posts over the coming days featuring some of your favorite (or not so favorite) celebrites and what they are up to (or not up to) healthwise.
Personally, I try not to follow the celebrity trail too much, but of course it’s often hard to miss. The media make sure of that. But there’s good celebrity health coverage and then there’s bad celebrity health coverage. I’m going to try and stick to the good, and avoid the bad and the ugly.
For example…
A new study in Australia has found that Kylie Minogue’s breast cancer leads to screening spike in young women. Seems that after the pop star announced, in 2005, that she had breast cancer &#822...

Did You Know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month?

Did you know May is Skin Cancer Awareness month? It surely is. And to draw even more awareness to what has become an increasingly pertinent issue, the Beauty & Style channel here at b5media (where I also write) will be hosting a Theme Day centered around this very issue.
Tuesday, May 20, will see links from many of the wonderful blogs over at Beauty and Style, each offering up creative ways on how to protect your skin and raise awareness. Once the collaborative list is posted on the main b5 blog, I will come back here and add the link. Until then, enjoy this post focusing on two celebrities who have made skin cancer awareness a mission of theirs.
And we hope to see you milling around Theme Day tomorrow for some great ideas to care for your skin in style.

You might think you’re fit.
But are you ?
Find out with the President’s Challenge Adult Fitness Test.
It’s been designed by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, a group of volunteers who advise the government and ultimately the President about fitness, physical activity, and sports in the U.S.
It measures your aerobic fitness, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, and body composition by having you…
Walk one mile or run 1.5 miles and log in your time.
Count the number of half sit-ups you can do in a minute.
Count the number of push-ups you can do in a minute.
Do a sit-and-reach flexibility test.
Measure your height, weight, and waist.
The results are then entered and an evaluation and tips for improvement will be done.

So who hasn’t dreamed of spending a day or two in bed? Maybe even a week?
But what about lying around in bed for three months and getting paid $5000 a month for doing so?
Well, according to Wired Science that’s just what NASA is asking people to volunteer for.
NASA is running a ‘Bed Rest Study’ at it’s Human Test Subject Facility at Johnson Space Center to examine the effects of microgravity on the human body.
Want to know more - check out this Q&A with a NASA Scientist about the study.
It might sound like a dream but it could easily turn into a nightmare…
On the other hand, if you combined it with the Getting Paid to Eat Chocolate research, it might just be worth it!!!

Protein folding as a competitive sport?
Sounds bizarre but researchers at the University of Washington are hoping that Foldit, a new computer game will help uncover the key to medical mysteries ranging from Alzheimer’s Disease to vaccines.
There are more than 100,000 different kinds of proteins in the human body. These proteins form cells, make up the immune system, and determine the speed of chemical reactions.
Scientists already know the genetic sequence of many of the proteins but not how they fold up into the complext shapes that play the crucial biological roles within the human body.
This is where Foldit comes in.
This computer game will allow players to manipulate on-screen images of protein chains and attempt to predict their folding patterns. Points are earned for every chem...

Amy’s open letter challenged Steve Jobs and the ‘gods of consumer design’ to champion the diabetic cause and help show the medical device industry how to create more feel good and look good diabetic devices - in other words, move medica...

Vitality Compass Challenge, Part Two

So it’s my turn to report my results from the Vitality Compass Quiz, and let me tell you, I was not anxious to take that thing at first. I figured you’d have to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jessica Alba to score even decently on it, but after reading Liz’s results, I was encouraged. A real person who does not spend the bulk of her day in a gym and who probably noshes on a carb or two once in a while? If Liz could score well, so could I, right?
Well, turns out Liz is on track to last a bit longer than I’m predicted to, but I’ll still live a long life it seems. Naturally, by kicking up my fruit and veggie consumption and actually removing my rear form this chair to sneak in some exercise, I can add more years to my life. Hmm. I can do that. I need to do ...

I’m not one for questionaires and surveys but this Vitality Compass, an online longevity calculator, had me intrigued.
I wanted to know…was I in the Blue Zone? What was my life expectancy? And were my current life habits going to lead the way to a grand old age of 100 plus?
So I headed on over and took the Vitality Compass quiz.
Thirty five questions later, I got my answer.
I exist in the Blue Zone.
I’m 6.5 years younger biologically than my real age. Of course I’d rather it was 10 or 15 years younger but still any number less that the real one works for me.
My life expectancy is 95.8.
But my healthy life expectancy is only 84.
Looks like I’m not on track to reach 100 but maybe that’s just as well given the last decade or two might not be that healthy.

Everyone’s talking green this week with Earth Day (April 22) on the horizon.
So Healthbolt is going to talk green too. Green health that is.
Here’s our common sense tips to greener health…
Sleep more - not only is sleep good for your health, it’s also good for the environment. When you sleep, your energy consumption is significantly reduced.

Become a locavore - eating lots of fruit and vegetables will keep us healthy. Buying your fruit and vegetables locally will keep the planet healthy.
Cycle or walk to work - get fit and reduce vehicle emissions at the same time. Sounds like a win/win situation.
And here’s what others are saying about green health…
Treehugger suggests that you can Save Money - and Your Health - by Going Green.

A new campaign with a Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring characters from the Disney Classic, the Jungle Book was launched by the USDA, Food Nutrition and Consumer Services. This Public Service Announcement highlights the importance of balancing good nutrition and physical activity by emphasizing the “Bare Necessities” of healthy living and healthy eating.
One reason for the PSA is to encourage children to be eating more fruits and vegetables. Another is to encourage Moms to be encouraging healthy foods and being active.
The main purpose of the PSA is to send a message to families that leading a healthy lifestyle can help you be the best at everything you love to do.
The Reason for the Ad Council Public Service Announcement

Here’s some great news for Nintendo Wii Sports fans who are already bouncing around their living rooms chasing the imaginary ball. There’s a new kid coming to town. It’s name - Wii Fit.
A top selling game in Japan when it was released there in December last year, Wii Fit is now being released in other parts of the world and demand is high. Everyone, it seems, wants to be Wii Fit.
Watching the Wii Fit promotional video pretty much convinced me that my household needs the Nintendo Wii Fit. Why? Because one of the activities it features is the ‘hoola hoop’ - something I’ve been trying (and failing) to get the hang of for the past year. Perhaps, using Wii Fit, I can finally get the hoola hoop swing.
Not sure whether is all hype or all good ? Maybe these rev...

“…one may take a walk up & down Broadway & scare meet a soul.”
Almost impossible to imagine these days but apparently that was the way it was back in 1832 when New York City was in the middle of a cholera epidemic.
By the time it had ended, over 3000 people had died out a population of 250,000. A dreadful time. And the worst of it - the medical profession didn’t know what caused it. It seemed to be a mystery.
Those who could afford to escaped the city. The New York Evening Post reported
“The roads, in all directions, were lined with well-filled stagecoaches, livery coaches, private vehicles, and equestrians, all panic-struck, fleeing the city, as we may suppose the inhabitants of Pompeii fled when the red lava showered down upon their houses.”

Finding health news is easy. It’s everywhere - in the newspapers, magazines, television, and all over the internet. So much health news, in fact, that it’s time hard to keep up with.
But there are a few sites out there that make it easier to keep up-to-date. They provide all the health news and resources you could ever want all in one place. Let me introduce them to you.
First up, there’s the newly formed Alltop.com. Here’s what they do…
We help you explore your passions by collecting stories from “all the top” sites on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — ”aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, celebrity gossip, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh.
It’s been a while since we’ve added some new blood to the Science & Health channel, but alas, two awesome blogs have now joined our dysfunctional, er, happy little family.
First up: Weighting Line. Hope and Robin dish up all kinds of goodness on how to lose weight effectively and for good. But these gals aren’t just preaching “do’s” and “don’ts”. They’re actually living them. Join them in the quest for weight loss and good health - we’re all in it together.
Next: Pink Ribbon Review. A breast cancer survivor herself, Karen has been there and will lead you through some of trials and tribulations of the disease, as well as the triumphs. This promises to be an active and supportive community for both patients and their love...

No one ever wants to be placed in a position where they have to perform CPR on someone. But we all learn just in case. We sweat through the first aid class and try desperately to remember the steps. We worry about how many times we have to breathe into the person, where to push down on the chest, and how often and fast.
But performing CPR has just got a whole lot easier with an American Heart Association announcement Monday that the days of mouth-to-mouth breathing are now over.
Hands Only CPR - calling for help and deep, rapid chest compressions - at a rate of 100/minute - until help arrives is new recommended practice.
While it might seem like an extreme change to a practice that we have all had drilled into us at first aid classes, experts have been working towards this for some time. S...

Written in a very friendly and relatable style, Mr. Bohager addresses the world of enzymes and their presence in our food sources and dietary supplements. Their primary role, Bohager suggests, is to relieve the digestive system of otherwise tedious activity, freeing up energy for our body to address the rest of its needs.

Have you heard the song ‘Sing‘?
It’s the latest from the Scottish musician and HIV/AIDS awareness campaigner Annie Lennox. It’s a song that was over a year in the making and features not only Annie Lennox’s powerful voice but also the voices of 23 other well known singers. Singers such as Madonna, Gladys Knight, Sarah McLachlan, Anastacia, and more…
The result is amazing. Powerful. And moving.
All proceeds from the sale of ‘Sing’ will go to Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), a grass-roots organization founded in Cape Town, South Africa. Established in 1998, the TAC campaigns have resulted in the development of antiretroviral treatment programs, countrywide mother-to-child transmission prevention p...

If you think that Alzheimer’s is a disease that only attacks older people, then think again. It seems that you can get it at any age, even as a child.
I first learned about this last month when I read about Leah Garfitt, a six year old child who has Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NPC), a genetic disease that causes large amounts of fatty substances to build up in the liver, spleen, bone marrow and brain resulting in symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s.
Niemann-Pick Type C is very uncommon disease with only 500 known cases worldwide. So it’s not surprising that most of us have not heard.
But for those who have to deal with it and live through it, Neimann-Pick Type C is a real heartbreaker. There is no known cure and those suffering from it usually die before they reach 20.
