My apologies to Romeo Vitelli, but somehow two weeks ago it totally slipped my mind to announce his 131st Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, which is a fine addition to the Skeptics' Circle canon. Computational and Cognitive Neurobiology are playing an increasing important role in advancing our understanding of the neural basis of behavior. To foster this field in China and other Asian countries, and to help attract young talented students and postdocs to the field, we have developed a new summer school program to be held at a purpose-built academic center in Suzhou, China.
This past week, I announced to my newsletter subscribers a new tool that will help both new and experienced goal setters add more impact to their goal plans. Appropriately enough titled Achieve-IT! Online it is an online web-app version of my goal setting strategies. These are the same strategies I’ve used for decades and the same my clients use to get what they want out of life.

You can read more about the history of this project here.

But where Achieve-IT! Desktop is currently bound to Windows machines, Achieve-IT! online is open to just about anyone with a browser. So I encourage you to give this new goal setting system a try and let me know your thoughts.

The verdict just in.
Former Winkler County nurse, Anne Mitchell, has been found “not guilty” for misusing confidential information.
via CBS 7 – Your Eye on West Texas.
A case that should never have been brought is now over.
Now, about that Civil suit…
Update: via the NYT:
A jury in West Texas took less than an hour Thursday to acquit a nurse who had been charged with a felony after anonymously complaining to the state medical board that a doctor at her hospital was practicing unsafe medicine. The prosecution had ignited deep concern among health care workers and advocates for whistle-blowers about the potential chilling effect of a conviction.

Welcome InstaPundit readers!
(links fixed @ 2225 Central; sorry).
If you’re new to this story, the backgrounder is here.
The trial of Anne Mitchell, RN for doing her duty (reporting bad patient care to the Texas Medical Board) started 3 days ago. I cannot find CBS’s coverage (if there was any) of Day 1, but there is pretty good coverage of days 2 & 3.
Day 2
Day 3
Having read that (and being quite biased for the nurse in this case) so far all Ms. Mitchell has to worry about are her legal bills. I suspect they’ll be covered by the settlement from her civil suit for malicious prosecution.

Update: ABC’s Good Morning America has a good report on this as well, with about a 3 minute video.

Lights out: A protein may switch off cancer cells

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—A protein acting as a switch to activate the cell death process may prove to be an effective targeted treatment for killing cancer cells.

University of Michigan researchers discovered that the protein called RIP plays a role in mediating both the life and death of squamous cell carcinoma cancer cells, said Yvonne Kapila, associate professor, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry.

This is key because cancer cells elude the normal cell death process. If that process could be activated artificially by a targeted introduction of RIP into cancer patients, those cells could be destroyed before they circulate out of control in the body, Kapila said.

The findings are promising but still a lon...

Two members of the Health Sciences Libraries' staff spent Saturday morning (2/6/10) distributing reliable health information and giving out MedlinePlus pens, as well as flyers with resources for free/low cost health care, to about 90+ parents at the Give Kids a Smile annual event held at the UM School of Dentistry. While the participants were waiting for their dental check-ups, we also gave out colorful stickers to the children. Other volunteers in the waiting room were occupied with keeping the children entertained, while still others demonstrated (on Mr. Potato Head and various stuffed animals) the correct way to brush one's teeth. The event went very well thanks to the warmth and friendliness of the numerous volunteers (mostly pre-dental and dental students) and to the competence and th...

The University hosts one of the few museums in the world specifically dedicated to honoring the discipline of — believe it or not — dentistry.

The Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry is scattered throughout the School of Dentistry and the W.K. Kellogg Institute Building. Named after Dr. Gordon Sindecuse, a University alum, the museum was created in 1992 to preserve dental paraphernalia and recognize the fusion of art and dentistry. The museum contains over 12,000 objects, but only 15 percent of these artifacts are put on display due to lack of space. Doctors ignore Internet at their own peril
By Kevin Pho
Raise your hand if you've ever left a physician's office without fully understanding what the doctor just told you. According to The New England Journal of Medicine, half of patients admit to not understanding what their doctor told them during an office visit.
As a primary care physician, being unable to clearly communicate with patients is frustrating. The typical, 15-minute office visit often is not sufficient for a thorough discussion. A better way to connect with patients is needed.
Perhaps that is why more patients are turning to the Internet…

AUSTIN—U.S.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, will be in San Antonio Thursday, January 14, to
visit the Frito-Lay Food Manufacturing Facility and see how local company Fit
For Work LLC is helping Frito-Lay employees prevent work-related injuries and
lower health care costs. Studies show an emphasis on workplace wellness leads

costs. Sen. Cornyn will be briefed and have the opportunity to see a training
demonstration in which Fit For Work staff will train Frito-Lay employees how to
carry out their responsibilities at work in a way that promotes wellness and prevents
injury.

Sen.
Cornyn believes a focus on prevention and wellness must be central to broader

Congrats!
FORT WORTH — Some of the most seriously injured and ill patients will no longer have to be flown to Dallas or Lubbock for treatment now that John Peter Smith Hospital has been granted approval to become a Level 1 trauma center, allowing it to provide the highest level of emergency care.
The American College of Surgeons recently granted accreditation for the upgrade to Tarrant County’s taxpayer-supported public hospital from its current status of Level 2. Tarrant County had been the largest urban county in Texas without a Level 1 trauma center.
JPS is out County hospital, and by all accounts their attention to detail / patients has improved dramatically since last years’ multi-story expose in the Star Telegram. They have to get State approval for something or other (ha...

An In-depth Look at the News

Google News has been one of the usual suspects when you want to monitor current news. The challenge of Google News is that the layout and organization of the stories is done by algorithm rather than by a real live human. This sometimes results in stories from less reliable sources being featured, at the expense of providing links to more trustworthy sources. Perhaps the more significant issue is that, in order to read any of the news, you need to click through to the story. Want another perspective? You'll have to go back to Google News, skim the headlines and decide what other sources offer better coverage.

Google has partnered with The Washington Post and The New York Times to provide a more journalistic approach to providing news. This new of...

In addition to our regular workload, the staff of the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) of the University of Michigan have been busy with a number of charitable activities during the holiday season. Our staff members have taken part in Sponsor-a-Family, a Community Action Network program that provides services to low-income individuals.
SurgeXperiences 312 will be hosted at Adventures of a Funky Heart on 13 Dec 2009. Adventures of a Funky Heart is a blog kept by Steve, an adult congenital heart defect survivor. Read more about him here.
This is how Steve describes himself:
My name is Steve; I live in rural South Carolina and I was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) known as Tricuspid Atresia. CHD’s are the most common birth defect, affecting 1 out of 125 live births. Tricuspid Atresia is one of the rarer defects — only about 1 person in 10,000 has it. I have survived 3 heart surgeries, outlived a pacemaker, and I am doing well. (Source: SurgeXperiences)

Well, now. With the long four day weekend that many of us here in the U.S. have enjoyed finally over, it's time to get back to serious business. Serious, but fun. I'm referring to the upcoming 125th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, which will be held at Effort Sisyphus on Thursday, December 3. For more specific guidelines of what we're looking for in the Skeptics' Circle, go here.

And don't let Techskeptic down! Apparently the tryptophan-induced food coma from all that turkey consumption has led our usual posse of skeptics to neglect their duties. Techskeptic needs more submissions if he's going to make this latest...

This is a guest post by Denise Tyler, PhD, an Investigator in the Center for Gerontology & Health Care Research at Brown University. She is the project manager for the Shaping Long-Term Care in America Project, a five-year, $10 million project funded by the National Institute on Aging that aims to improve nursing home care in the US by examining how market factors and state policies affect the quality of care delivered in the country’s 15,000+ nursing homes.
Millions of Americans live in nursing homes and millions more receive short-term care from one after a hospital stay. But the current health care reform debate has largely ignored nursing home care.
This is due, in part, to a lack of data about how and why that care is given.
As we move ahead with health care reform, we must...

From their email today:
Just wanted you to know we changed our blogs name from iphonemedicalappreview.com, to iMedicalApps.com. We now have a team of physicians and medical students writing reviews and commenting on mobile applications for the iPhone and other devices (reason for the move: Our first name was entirely too long, and we moved to WordPress).
So, a site for medical app reviews, and a better name, too!

William Ganz, Catheter Inventor, Dies at 90
By DOUGLAS MARTIN
Published: November 13, 2009

Dr. William Ganz, a cardiologist and medical inventor who helped develop a revolutionary catheter to measure blood flow and heart functions, died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 90. …
The catheter, which is used more than one million times a year in the United States, is known as the Swan-Ganz because Dr. Ganz created it with Dr. Jeremy Swan at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. It is inserted through a vein in the neck, shoulder or groin and fed into the right side of the heart. A balloon at the device’s tip allows it to be carried along by blood flow.
I was fortunate enough to get a chance to ‘float a Swan’ a few times as a resident, and never since. Are the...

A day late and a couple of dollars short on the announcement, but:
We are excited to announce our annual Medgadget Sci-Fi Writing Contest! Now in its fourth year, the competition is designed to showcase fictional stories written by our readers, stories that transport us into the future of medicine. Whether it is a hitherto unknown ethical dilemma that will come up many years from now or an imaginary technology, we can’t wait to see this year’s entries!

Go there, read the rules, and write your SciFi heart out. I get to judge (and it’s quite an honor to get to read all the submissions). If you win, you get a Kindle!

Entries due November 16th, so get-a-typing…

For a number of years I’ve worked with Brain Resource, a personalized medicine company with a revolutionary standardized, integrated database of the human brain. Recently the company has made its database available to BRAINnet for independent scientific research.
BRAINnet recently initiated the Maylfower Action Group, whose call for action is reprinted here.
A Call for Action
Disorders of the human brain, such as depression, schizophrenia, and addiction, are the cause of immeasurable human suffering. Because they are largely chronic and strike in youth, brain disorders lead to greater disability and loss of productivity than any other category of illness. On October 24-25, 2009, leaders from the worlds of research, medicine, industry, government, and philanthropy convened at the Mayf...

Something tells me things could be ugly tomorrow, November 2 at the Devotion School flu clinic in Brookline, MA. Normally I get my seasonal flu shot at my doctor’s office, but this year he doesn’t have any. Luckily my local elementary school scheduled a flu clinic with Flu Busters, run by an organization known as Care Dynamix. I filled out my online form, paid in advance by credit card, and received tickets via email to print out.
But then in Thursday’s Brookline Tab (the local new...

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Senate has formally confirmed Dr. Regina Benjamin to be the U.S. surgeon general, making her only the third African American to hold the position as the nation’s top doctor.
Congrats to Dr. Benjamin. Time to order some uniforms…

It’s October 31st, 2009, and it’s officially Tim Schickedanz Day in Saginaw, TX. Well deserved, unfortunately it’s Posthumous.
I was fortunate enough to know Tim for about eight years, as a nurse in our ED. Hard working, friendly, funny and competent, we were nearly instant work-friends due to our military backgrounds.
We weren’t really close, and that’s my loss. A really terrific guy, with a loving wife and four kids.
Again proving the ED cynicism, such a good person with a job and a loving family and a lot of friends died quickly when he fell ill. He’s missed, by all of us.
There’s a Facebook page for him (Friends of Tim Schickedanz).

Seems very simple: concentrate on what you’re doing, and you lessen (but not eliminate) the risk of car crash. How much higher is the risk of accidents from texting? Twenty Three times, that’s how much (VTTI, .pdf).
That’s just not worth the risk.
Unfortunately, apparently it’s hard to resist…

It’s an all too familiar story: The initial diagnosis of a patient’s condition turns out to be wrong; or there’s an incorrect interpretation of a test result; or a patient never learns of a test result; or a physician relies too much on memory to form a diagnostic opinion, forgetting about other important clues. Each of these diagnosis errors can be traced back to a system failure or an overreliance on cognitive skills (ignoring decision supports), and often, both. Thankfully, many years’ worth of robust research on diagnosis errors is finally r...

Right on the heels of my post the other day discussing the error in inviting terrorism reporting, here’s another video (and suspicious-activity-reporting Web site) produced by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The production values in this video are hipper, and L.A. appears to have its share of actors willing to look concerned about terrorism. But really, the attacks of September 11, 2001 were all the Public Service Announcement we needed to encourage reporting of genuine suspicions.
Asking amateurs for tips about terrorism will have many wasteful and harmful results, like racial and ethnic discrimination, angry neighbors turning each other in, and—given the rarity of terrorism—lots and lots of folks just plain getting it wrong. People with expertise—even in very limi...

The very fact that you are reading these words attests to how technology touches your life.Well, the Johns Hopkins Sarcoma Center has engaged Web 2.0, too. If you follow this link, you will hear a podcast featuring my partner, Dr. Kristy Weber, the chief of orthopedic oncology at Johns Hopkins.Bruce Shriver, one of the founders of the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, asked me about chemotherapy for high grade sarcomas, and you can see that video here. An article in their online newsletter, ESUN, discussing my laboratory's research, is here.Over time our group will be producing more podcasts. I will post links to them as they appear.Related Posts:Sarcoma VideoHear Me on the Doctor Anonymous Show!I'm on Facebook! (Source: Doctor David's Blog)

FORT WORTH – A North Texas teen athlete is alive thanks to his coaches and school trainer who brought him back to life by restarting his heart.
Nearly one month after the close call, the teen's lifesavers were honored Tuesday night.

Naval History and Heritage Command : About
In 1972 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy?s birthday. In contrast to Navy Day, the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees, and dependents. Since 1972 each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service."

Dear Healthbolters,
This blog is a lot of fun to write, but geez, there’s a LOT of fun stuff to write about. Would you believe that I have at least 30 stories all ready for you – and that’s just from a few quick searches over the past few weeks? That doesn’t include all the neat stuff I find every day.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I’m pretty obsessive about things I’m enjoying, so I’m going to encourage a bit more. If you come across any great stories you’d like to see covered here at Healthbolt, please send me a note at marijke.durning@b5media.com. I’m going to see if I can scare up a few prizes for contributors.

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s been almost two years since my very first Healthbolt post.
I’ve had fun. I’ve laughed. I’ve cried. And I’ve been amazed and even gobsmacked as I’ve wandered around cyberspace looking for interesting, entertaining, and bizarre health news to share with Healthbolt readers. I only hope that you all have had as much fun as me…
But you know what they say – all good things must come to an end…eventually.
So, it’s time for me to say goodbye to Healthbolt and follow a new path. A path that focuses more on travel and the environment than health and medicine. I’ll still be around though, dropping in occasionally with a guest post or two. But mostly, I’ll be over at Perceptive Travel, Ecosalon (where previous Healthbolt’er Sar...

In any case, longtime commenter at RI (who also has his own most excellent blog), Kristjan Wager has served up yet another heapin' helpin' of skepticism and critical thinking at the 120th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle. Go. Read. Enjoy.

Then come back in two weeks to do the same for The Mad Skeptic on October 8, preferably after having submitted your own pearl of skeptical genius. Also, don't forget: There's still one more opening for a Skeptics' Circle host in 2009. It's on December 17. Let's try to get the year filled out in style. Read the comments on this post... Or something.

What I do know is that the Wheel has turned once again and a new meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching. Indeed, it is less than three days away. On Thursday, September 24, the 120th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle will be hosted by Kristjan Wager at Pro-Science. He needs your submissions, and he needs them by Wednesday night. Sometime this morning or early this afternoon, the Science-Based Medicine blog went down, returning only a cryptic message saying that the site has been "suspended." This is the second time it's gone completely down, the first being Friday for most of the day, and the performance of the site has been painfully slow all weekend, with interminable waits for page loads, etc.

The SBM team is aware of the problem. All I can say is that the problem is being worked on, but the technical guys are volunteers with day jobs; so they can't just drop everything to work on this. I'm hoping the site will be back up soon, but Steve Novella has not yet been able to give me an estimate as to when that ...

Sometime earlier this morning after 7 AM but before around 10 AM, the Science-Based Medicine blog went down, returning only a cryptic message saying that the site has been "suspended."

The SBM team is aware of the problem, and, quite frankly, I'm disturbed that the site isn't back up yet. I can tell you (and many of you may have noticed) that the site's performance over the last week has, quite frankly, sucked, with slow as molasses page loading, frequent database errors, and general poor performance, which is really unfortunate, because the posts this week have been stellar. All I can say is that the problem is being worked on, but the technical guys are volunteers with day jobs; so ...

Thinking about buying a new cell phone?
Before you do, you might want to check out the free, user friendly online tool that illustrates the radio frequency emission of more than 1000 phones in the marketplace.
The online tool, created by the Environmental Working Group, offers easy to read graphics which enables consumers to make quick comparision of the radiation levels of cellphones and smart phones.
Radiation is emitted from cell phones each time you talk on or send text message from it. Some phones emit less than others. As to whether or not it is a health risk remains in debate with the phone industry saying ‘no risk’ and researchers around the world still seeking answers.
Given that no one knows for sure, it makes sense to go for a phone with the least amount of radiation emissio...

It's that time again, time for another meeting of that--choke!--"venerable" blog carnival known as the Skeptic's Circle.

Sorry, it just bugs me that the Circle I took over four years ago is now counted as "venerable." Oh, well.

In any case, this time around, it's at Cubik's Rube (great name for a blog, BTW), and it's a rip-roaring tale in which our host conjures a god. I kid you not. He really does. But he ends up...well, you'll just have to check out the 119th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle to find out what happens. I will say no more.

Also, don't forget that a mere two weeks hence, on September 24, the 120th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle will appear at an old stalwart favorite, Pro-Science. Get your skeptical fingers a'tappin' on your keyboard and lay down some more fantastic skept...

I can't help but have noticed that one of our own, GrrlScientist, is in the running to be selected as the blogger to go on a trip to Antarctica and blog from there with the Quark Expedition in February. As of my checking, Grrl is in third place.

I have no doubt that She'd do a hell of a job, given her writing talent, and who can resist a chance to send a fellow ScienceBlogger to some frigid, desolate plain at the bottom of the world? There's not much time left, only until September 30.

So vote, already! Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

Meet the Hip Hop Docs
They are doctors aiming to get the message to kids through hip hop.
There’s Rani G Whitfield, a board certified family doctor in Baton Rouge, Louisiana who wants to empower young people to change unhealthly lifestyles.
By hip hop…

And then there’s Dr John Clarke from New York City who does the medical rap, writing his own lyrics about ssthma, diabetes, and HIV.
Dr Clarke has just entered the 2009 Flu Prevention PSA Contest with his song about Swine H1N1 Flu.

You can vote for Dr Clarke’s entry or any of the other 9 entries at the flu.gov contest site.

Unfortunately, my metaphor was wrong. So, it made my point, well, less pointed. So, I’ll approach the idea from a different tack.

Here in the U.S., it's smack dab in the middle of a three day holiday weekend. Given that, I'm chilling for a while. There's some new material tomorrow, but today I have to head out for a celebration of my father-in-law's 70th birthday and, between that , to work on a talk I have to give on Friday. That makes today the perfect time to post a reminder that the 119th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching and will arrive on Thursday, September 10 at Cubik's Rube.

There was a health care SNAFU at the Veterans Administration early this month.
A computer coding error by the Veterans Administration led to more than 1,800 Gulf War veterans being sent letters informing them that they had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal neurological disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Can you imagine opening up your mail and being told that as a veteran with ALS, they were entitled to disability compensation of up to $2,700 a month with additional money for their children and spouses.
Most would have been left scratching their head and wondering how in the world they suddenly had Lou Gehrig’s disease and why the heck no one had told them before.
According to a VA spokesperson, the letter no way inferred a medical diagnosis of ALS. The VA has...

I realize that this is a little late, but for those of you in southeast Michigan who might be able to make it, there's going to be an attempt at an inaugural Skeptics in the Pub. Thanks to fellow ScienceBlogger and skeptical rogue PalMD and even more so thanks a couple of his similarly skeptical (but blog-free thus far) buddies, this event will come to fruition tonight. If it works out, maybe next time we'll gussy it up a bit and perhaps even have a speaker. For now, though, it's just a chance to meet and greet in informal surroundings.

PalMD and Orac will be there. If you're in southeast Michigan and are so inclined, feel free to drop by. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

August 20th is World Mosquito Day.
It was on this day back in 1897 the link between mosquitos and malaria was first established. Army doctor Ronald Ross, based in India, discovered this tremendous fact while dissecting the stomach tissue of a anopheline mosquito. The mosquito, which had fed on a malarious patient four days previously, had the malaria parasite. It was the evidence needed to prove mosquitos were responsible for transmitting the malaria parasite to humans.
Ross, who went on the win the Nobel Price for Medicine in 1902 and found the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, declared August 20th as World Mosquito Day.
But discovering the cause unfortunately has not lead to the eradication of the disease. Malaria still kills over a million people a year.
So World Mosquito Day is no...

It’s H1N1, not swine flu

I got a nice email from the American Meat Institute (representing pork producers, among others), politely asking that we stop saying ’swine flu’:
Novel H1N1 is a human disease. Pigs have not played any role in the spread of the virus. We urge you to remind your reporters and producers that continued use of the term “swine flu” is inappropriate and ask that your coverage de-link the virus from pigs or pork. We ask that you refrain from using pig graphics in your reporting as it reinforces the perception that a link has existed between the Novel H1N1 virus and pig production– something that is regrettable, inaccurate, yet commonly seen.
So, just say no to swine flu, it’s H1N1. (Source: GruntDoc)

Did you ever have a nightmare about how things could go wrong? This past Tuesday, my nightmare came true. This past Tuesday I was invited to speak to the executive board of the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MASC). MASC represents all of the secondary schools in the state. Every year they choose a single charity to raise funds for. The amount they raise varies from year to year but is quite substantial. In order to keep my talk from being too "dry," I thought I would interview the parent of one of my patients. I asked her what it was like to be the mother of a child with cancer. I taped her son, who is VERY cute. Then, I created a powerpoint presentation that alternated i...
