Like much of the East Coast, New York City was hit by Hurricane Irene. On Saturday, we checked our flashlights, loaded up on food, filled the bathtub, and hoped for the best.
We were extremely lucky. The hurricane didn’t affect us much — we didn’t even lose power. And I’m very, very grateful for that.
The hurricane was a good reminder about gratitude.

For one thing, it reminded me that I have so much to be grateful for that it seems a bit preposterous that I need to remind myself to be grateful — but I do. When life is taking its ordinary course, it’s so easy to take everyday life for granted.
Also, the hurricane made me much more mindful of how much I love my apartment and my city, and how safe and secure I generally feel. It’s a sad foible of human nature that ...

We’ve all had days where it seems as though nothing gets done. For those times when I seem to be spinning my wheels, I keep a list of things that I can do every day, even when I have no extra time, money, or energy to spare. I sometimes forget to write in my one-sentence journal and I don’t always make it to the gym, but I do try to make sure I hit all these items.
That way, even if I feel like I had a day when I got nothing accomplished, I can comfort myself, as I climb into my smooth, tidy bed, “Well, at least I went for a walk. I ate an apple. I hugged my daughters.”

Every day, I…
1. Make my bed.
2. Wear sunscreen (well, most days).
3. Wear my seat belt.
4. Jump up and down a few times.
5. Pick up one object that’s in the wrong place and put it away.
6. Go for a ten...

Sometimes when I’m in need of a little inspiration, I head out for a short walk. Today, as I meandered through the tree lined path of my apartment complex, I found it.
I kept ending up in the direction of a beautiful fountain. The sound of the water as it sprung up in the air like fireworks and then gently falling as it lapped softly against the rocks was soothing. I thought about what the water represented, that regardless of whether it was thrust up in the air or moved gracefully to the bottom, it was the same unchanged substance. I realized that no matter what you did to it, the water was still water flowing in a fountain.
The same could be said about you. You may have emotions that carry you from the highest mountain peaks to the valley lows, but you are at the core that unchange...

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.
~ John Lennon
On Dec. 8th, 1980, I was in bed listening to the radio when suddenly, in a voice labored by heavy breathing and halting words, the disc jockey broke the news that John Lennon had been shot and killed in front of his New York City apartment building. The news ransacked my brain.
The Beatles weren’t just a rock band; they gave us an identity. Their songs weren’t simply catchy tunes or stray memorable lyrics. The music told us who we were. It pointed us in a whole new direction. The simplicity and ...

Some people feel their body doesn’t belong to them anymore during illness; it belongs to the doctors. With cancer, I didn’t just surrender my body, I also relinquished the privacy of my home.
During surgery and treatments, my mom traveled to San Francisco and moved into my studio apartment. My kitchen was in a separate room and she retreated there to read, quilt, and write letters, trying to give us each a shred of privacy. I never asked her for this seven feet of privacy. She probably needed an escape from caregiving as much as I needed to feel like a grownup with an ounce of independence.
I’m not a clean freak. Some days it looks like a tornado tore through my home. But during cancer treatment, I wanted everything in its place. I suddenly liked things ti...

Pets can be very great for those with autism, aspergers and other disabilities. People with Autism, Aspergers and other disabilities often have trouble with social situations, and a pet really does not care about the social norms, and will always remain loyal to its owner. People with disabilities often form bonding relationships with pets, because [...] (Source: AspieWeb.net)

Inspection day at the apartment complex came around again last Friday. It is really more of a regular maintenance routine, but there is usually a suspicious looking assistant manager who accompanies the crew to make certain that I am not running an unapproved meth lab or have not burned down the kitchen without notifying the office in advance. I was fine with the first inspection here because I knew the manager loved cats and I handed her one while the others replaced filters, changed batteries, checked the fire extinguisher, and did the other necessary things. I got a notice six months ago that I was due for an inspection, but none ever happened. I was therefore not terribly surprised when I got the current notice to see that a single word had been added for this (yearly) inspection. I ha...

Make sure you prep for the day by drinking several martinis the night before so that you are well on your way to a hangover for the day of fun at hand. After you are good and sauced, go check out the new apartment. Hopefully this will be your first time seeing it. Its very important to take measurements before you head to the store so get out those feet and walk it out. (Don’t write it down. Your awesomely impaired memory is completely fine for this)
Agree on an early start. Always important when you have a big day planned. Then chack back and make sure you have successfully accomplished step 1 and roll out of bed only when the phone rings asking where you are.
Go to Ikea. The world’s most horribly amazing place. An entire apartment fits on 1 flatbed cart. I...

Noise seems to have become a bit of a theme around here, if not part of a sort of soundtrack. Charlie’s sensitivity to sounds—something he never had until this year—-is so great that he plants his hands over his ears soon as I try to turn on the car radio. Motorcycles, police and ambulance sirens, and the rumble of the traffic all warrant a fast rolling up of the windows, and he sits now in the subway leaning forward, hands on those ears. He doesn’t necessarily seem in discomfort, but trying to screen the sounds tumult.
Fourth of July fireworks have never been a big deal until last Friday night. The rain was coming down as we drove to a firemen’s carnival in a certain central Jersey town and at first Jim and I figured we should turn around. We asked Charlie if...

Are nasty neighbors affecting your home’s value? asks a report today on ABC news.
I’ll be honest—we do tend to be neighbors who can be noisy, though never in the form of blasting loud music, wild parties, and the like. Neighbors have had to hear us (occasional, and less frequent in than in the past) hollering “Charlie” and Charlie himself in moments of true distress and anxiety. We’ve been in a second-floor rental this year, and the neighbor below has indicated that there’s a bit too much stomping going on. We’ve bought extra throw rugs and try to get Charlie to leave the stomping for outside—-he’s a very active kid and really needs to run around. So we’ll be moving when the lease is up in early September.
Good thing we&#821...

An Oregon family has won a $40,000 settlement from a Portland, Oregon apartment owner and management company. Daniel and Jenny Sanchez claimed that Princeton Property Management, Inc. refused to accommodate the needs their of three-year-old autistic son. From press release from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development:
The Sanchezes alleged that Princeton Property Management, Inc., refused to grant the family’s request to move to a vacant first-floor apartment to mitigate noise complaints about their autistic son that the company received from a tenant who lived directly below the family. The family also alleged the property managers refused to renew the family’s lease, which they had in several previous years, and issued a 30-Day Termination of Tenancy Notice.
Although it happens rarely, one of the professional risk factors on the job for a psychotherapist is violence from a client. Some therapists are more exposed to this possibility than others, such as those who work with poorer, urban populations (because the rates of violence are higher in these populations).
So it was with sadness that we read of a local therapist’s murder by her client, while visiting her client’s apartment. You might think that unusual — a therapist making a house call. Yet for professionals who work in family crisis centers in urban areas, they usually take on a wider role, sometimes similar to that of a social worker.
The organization the therapist worked for, the Lawrence FLEX program, helps keep families together, in their home:

I love the sound of Charlie’s voice. Expressing himself using the spoken word continues to be one of his biggest struggles: Charlie still has traces of apraxia and has to try hard to articulate each word and syllable. I suspect that he is overly familiar with people saying “what did he say?” after he has spoken. Charlie could not talk prior to being diagnosed with autism in July of 1999 just after he turned two years old; sign language and lots of speech therapy especially helped him to talk. Charlie used PECS when he was 3-7, but often found this frustrating: It was so much faster, he had discovered, to talk. Charlie also had a lot of difficulty learning what many PECS cards—with their line drawings and puzzling graphics—-meant. Charlie, I think, likes to tal...
