8 Tips to Tell Your Child They Have ADHD

Regardless of your child’s age, it can be hard to tell them that they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Fortunately, today, people are more familiar with ADHD.
“The good news at this point in time is that ADHD is pretty well known and many kids (or at least teens) know someone or have a friend who they know has ADHD,” according to Ari Tuckman, PsyD, a clinical psychologist who specializes in ADHD and author of More Attention, Less Deficit: Successful Strategies for Adults with ADHD.
Below are some ideas to help you talk to your child.
1. Come to terms with the diagnosis yourself.
If you haven’t accepted the diagnosis, it’ll be much harder to talk to your child. According to psychologist Carol Brady, Ph.D, on ADDitude magazine, the best time to talk to you...

Dr. Ari Brown On Dr. Oz: “A Very Inaccurate View Of Vaccines”

Dr. Ari Brown, a pediatrician and author, was [recently] on The Dr. Oz Show. She was asked to join a discussion about autism. Dr. Brown is a board-certified developmental pediatrician, a mom of two, and an advocate for science. She is passionate and clear about what she believes. She is speaking all over the country about how to protect children from illness, particularly when making decisions about vaccines. She contributed ideas in my series in late 2010 entitled, “Do You Believe in Vaccines: Part I, Part II, and Part III.”
On Dr. Oz, she was asked to contribute to a discussion about autism that ultimately focused on fears about vaccines. I worry that the discussion wasn’t a representation of most American families, and even Autism Speaks refused to join the show.
Dr. Brown has s...

On September 16, 2010, I attended Fact or Fiction: ADHD in America, a Capitol Hill Forum, along with Dr. Val Jones of Better Health and Dr. Rob Lamberts of Musings of a Distractible Mind.
The event, coinciding with ADD/ADHD Awareness Week, was a panel discussion about the impact ADHD has on our society. It was sponsored by Shire, in partnership with the Entertainment Industries Council (EIC) and the Lab School of Washington [Disclosure: I received a stipend for covering the event.]
Below are interviews Rob and I did with some of the panelists.

In the wake of the long difficult struggle over health care reform, a large number of President Obama's nominees for administration positions remain in limbo because of holds placed on their confirmation by various senators. The rules of procedure in the Senate allow one lone senator to place such a hold on a presidential nominee, anonymously and for any reason or, sometimes, no reason at all. As reported by Reuters, the White House recently stated that President Obama has a total of 217 nominees pending before the Senate, and 34 of them have been pending for more than six months. Expressing his frustration with this situation, the president announced yesterday that he intends to place some of his nominees in their positions by means of recess appointments, which allow him to avoid the con...

When I endorsed Barack Obama's presidential candidacy on this blog in early 2007, it was because I judged him to be an enlightened and progressive thinker who would be capable of seeing the autistic population from a multicultural perspective—not as a plague to be fought and eradicated, but as a minority constituency made up of human beings and worthy of the same respect and representation as any other citizens.I can't think of a time when I've been happier to learn that my first impression was accurate. President Obama made it clear that he is indeed a good friend of the autistic community when, as announced in this White House press release yesterday, he nominated Ari Ne'eman of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network to serve as a member of the National Council on Disability. Here's an exce...

Assessing the Claim that CDT Opposes a National ID

It was good of Ari Schwartz to respond last week to my recent post querying whether the Center for Democracy and Technology outright opposes a national ID or simply “does not support” one.
Ari says CDT does oppose a national ID, and I believe that he honestly believes that. But it’s worth taking a look at whether the group’s actions are consistent with opposition to a national ID. I believe CDT’s actions — most recently its support of the PASS ID Act — support the creation of a national ID.
(The title of his post and some of his commentary suggest I have engaged in rhetorical excess and mischaracterized his views. Please do judge for yourself whether I’m being shrill or unfair, which is not my intention.)
First I want to address an unusual cl...

EPIC on PASS ID: a National ID Card

The Electronic Privacy Information Center has produced a very thorough analysis of the PASS ID Act, which would revive the REAL ID national ID program.
The EPIC analysis states flatly, “The bill would establish a national ID card,” and, “The intent of this legislation is to facilitate a National ID system.”
That’s quite a contrast to Ari Schwartz at the Center for Democracy and Technology, who alone believes that PASS ID “prevents the creation of a National ID system.” (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

PASS ID and National ID - Rejoinder to Schwartz

Ari Schwartz responded in characteristic even tones to my critique of his testimony in favor of the PASS ID Act, which would revive the moribund REAL ID law. It’s worth a rejoinder, and I’ll offer him the same again here if he wishes.
Ari clouds matters slightly by suggesting that my “strong biases” obscure certain facts. I readily admit having a strong bias in favor of liberty — it’s why I do what I do. Ari admits several biases, including one in favor of consensus-building, which was what I accused him of prioritizing over principle. Let’s put aside the question of bias.
It’s good to see Ari state that CDT does not support a national ID system. It would be better to see him state that CDT opposes having a national ID system. (I imagine this...

It’s so often said that
If you’ve met one person/child with autism, you’ve met one person/child with autism.
And of course this is true. It’s why, for one thing, I (like many others parents) emphasize the “I” in “IEP”—”Individual Education Plan.” Many’s the time that Jim and I have sat at the table with the Child Study Team and insisted that Charlie needs to be taught as he needs to be taught, not as “autistic children in general.” It takes awhile—weeks, months—for teachers and therapists, for anyone—to get to know Charlie’s patterns of speech and his way of doing things; to know who he is, as an individual. And it’s after this that they can teach him well, and better, even.

The claim that vaccines can be linked to autism suggests that a child became autistic and was somehow “damaged” by a vaccine. According to such a view, not only is autism something that happened to a child; it is something bad that happened—-a recent CBC News special feature, Positively Autistic, says that “since the early 90’s, an autistic rights movement has sprung up, challenging the official view of autism and working to change how the world sees autism.” Interviewed are: Amanda Baggs, Estée Klar-Wolfond of The Autism Acceptance Project, Michael Moon, Michelle Dawson, Dr. Laurent Motron, and Ari Ne’eman and Scott Robertson of the Autisitc Self-Advocacy Network.
I got this email from my dad on Saturday morning (it was written at 2.40am EST; he’s in California, so it was 11.40pm):
I was just on the computer and had channel 7 on for news and half-watching……heard a teaser for a coming program on autism and a voice asking someone a question concerning a “Charlie”. I turned around to see it and saw YOU.
While it’s possible my dad was referring to seeing a framed photo of me at various stages of my life (though the majority of the photos in my parents’ house are now of a certain boy, their only grandson), my dad did indeed mean that he’d seen me on tv.

Conclusion: Pioglitazone should be considered for further testing of therapeutic potential in autistic patients.

	Happy days right?

Well of course not. Would I be blogging about it if it was?

First problem I thought of was the discrepancy between sample size (25) and conclusion. At best I would think of this as a pilot study.

The second issue was the utter lack of clarification regarding Actos and what exact risks were spelled out to the patients or their guardians. Actos is pretty heavy stuff.

Last week Actos received a “black box warning” from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency’s strongest level of caution. Actos, and a similar diabetes drug, Avandia, can increase the risk of heart failure, the FDA warned.

A black box warning means that the dru...

DAN/ARI are asking people to leave messages for Andrew Wakefield. Below is mine:

Now that the scientific evidence as presented by Stephen Bustin at the OAP has finally displayed to the world how utterly wrong you are about measles in the guts of autistic kids, when do you plan to issue an apology to all the children you and your colleagues needlessly scoped?

When do you plan to issue an apology to all the parents who believed you and who subject their children to outlandish autism ‘treatments’ that have resulted in both death and hospitalisation?

When do you plan to offer an apology to all the people who are now living in a UK where herd immunity teeters on a knife edge and the numbers of people hospitalised by measles grows every year?

Back in August of last year I wrote a blog entry about the Generation Rescue ‘recovery’ stories and how true recovery actually accounted for 5% of the stories on their website which I upgraded in May of this year when they redesigned their website. Their true recovery figure now stands at 7%. I even recounted how I sent my own daughters details to them under an assumed name using the exact truth about her state and condition which they duly published.

I was interested to come across some more fascinating dialogue between members of the Yahoo ABMD group – a group which believe mercury caused their kids autism and Biomed can help them. This is one of the oldest and most well regarded (amongst the mercury militia anyway) Yahoo groups.

	The conversation began thusly:

Over on the Rescue Post (so named so people might think it has an air of authority similar to the Huffington Post – they call themselves ‘editors’ bless them), Brad Handley continues to make an arse of himself in new and interesting ways:

Have you ever tried to talk to someone involved with autism from the “other” side about recovered children?

Typically, the conversation goes something like this:

Us: So you think autism is a genetic condition and biomedical intervention is quackery?

	Them: Yes, exactly.

Us: But what about the children who are recovered, how do you explain them?

Them: Well, they may have been misdiagnosed…

Us: Well what about the kids who have multiple diagnoses saying they were autistic and have been re-screened and no long...

The DAN! Treatment of Tariq Nadama

This post was sent to me, as is by someone who wanted to write about this. I was happy to ‘host’ it.

Does the DAN! ‘Protocol’ have more to do with an autistic child’s death than meets the eye? Why does the newly re-designed Autism Research Institue’s (ARI) website still contain a statement about the death of Tariq Nadama, by Bernard Rimland (1928-2006), that appears to be based on old information and doesn’t amount to much more than logical fallacy? Does it matter that two physicians who treated Tariq Nadama are ARI-listed as DAN! practitioners?

The ARI website appears to have recently undergone some serious change. While such change may certainly have some supporters (after all, even Michael Jackson has die-hard supporters), in my opinion, it ...

DAN! Doctor Roy Kerry chelation charges

Thhe full set of charges against the people responsible for the death of Tariq Nadama have been posted online.

In particular, DAN! (defeat autism now) ‘doctor’ Roy Kerry has to face some very serious charges indeed.

At the time, various anti-vax apologists were saying it was a mix up of the chelating agent – that the wrong one was used. These charges kill that piece of silly rationalisation stone dead:

71. Respondent admitted to using Disodium EDTA to chelate Tariq.

	72. Respondent stated to Investigator Reiser that Disodiun EDTA is the only formula of EDTA he stocks in his office.

Maybe someone could explain to me how it was a mix up when the guy only stocks one type of EDTA? Please, this I have to hear.

The list of charges against Kerry strike right at the ...

DAN! Doctors - The ‘other’ list

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed a new main menu entry at the top of this page between ‘wiki’ and ‘contact’ called DAN! Doctors.

This page contains a (worryingly long) list of some of the people with the loose honorific of ‘DAN! Doctor’ who are on the official ARI list. However, unlike the ARI list, this list will tell you the ‘other’ side of the happy-clappy hero’s of DAN! It contains notes on prosecutions, license suspensions, criminal acts and current investigations.

I can take absolutely no credit for the compilation of this list. It was handed to me by someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

This is a static page at the moment. In the near future, this page will move to its own domain and website and be driven by ...

Katie Wright and Autism Speaks - woo confirmed

For the last few weeks the subject of ire on the EoH maillist has been Autism Speaks, they’ve been the subject of some very nasty descriptions indeed. The reason is that the EoHers knew that Katie Wright, daughter of the owners of Autism Speaks, was taking her son Christian to a DAN! doctor and yet Autism Speaks were keeping this quiet.

Well, as blogged by David Kirby, Katie Wright has now confirmed that Christian is seeing a DAN! doctor (lets hope its not one of the paedophiles or Scientologists) and has gone ‘on the record’ as stating she believes vaccines caused Christians autism.

The mercury militia and David Kirby report this:

Many in the upper echelons of Autism Speaks have rejected any environmental hypothesis and insisted that autism is purely a genetic diso...

Awhile ago, I wrote a post the detailed the disturbing links between the DAN! movement and scientology. It transpired that scientology – being a movement that is big on non psychiatric modes of treatments is a good fit for DAN! adherents. Both value detoxification for a range of things and it seems Scientologists have not been slow to ingratiate themselves into the DAN! movement. So far, I’ve identified three Scientologists who are also DAN! Doctors. One of them was involved in the death of a parent of a schizophrenic man in 2002.

	One of the darlings of the autism/vaccine movement is Julia Berle who’s son, Baxter, was used in a Generation Rescue advert. Ms Berle is a frequent poster to various autism/vaccine groups. Her signature reads;

	Julia, mom to Baxter, recovered...
