Surgeons Must Overcome A Bad Reputation

This article is meant to raise the awareness of the costs—both in dollars and in human misery—of incivility in the practice of medicine by looking in particular at the case of surgeons.
Uncivil behavior brings misery wherever it occurs. If the individual tends to behave in an uncivil fashion prior to medical school and prior to residency, (more…)

Feline Ethics, Part 2: Avoiding Arrogance

This is the second in an ongoing series of posts about feline-human ethics. The first post is Dealing with cats, part 1: What is Respect? The current post is on the topic of avoiding arrogance. The post that’s currently planned as the next post will be about the power humans hold over cats.
Human arrogance towards cats frequently goes two apparently opposiite directions.
1. Cats are like miniature humans in every way. They understand every word of what we say, are motivated by exactly the things that motivate us, and if they don’t respond exactly how we expect another human to respond then they are just being stubborn, callous, cruel, manipulative, etc. Any attempt to say otherwise relegates cats to the realm of dumb animals.
2. Cats are totally unlike and inferior to humans...

Desire to Detect Prostate Cancer Early Disdained as "Religious" Pursuit by American Cancer Society Spokesman

I never cease to be amazed at the sense of superiority that drips from the pores of some people who work in the sciences. I find this quite irritating, which was brought to a head for me this morning when I read a story about prostate cancer screening. For years, we have been told repeatedly and often to get screening tests for cancer because, logically enough, the earlier you catch the disease the greater the likelihood of surviving. That remains true of cancers such as of the breast--get those mammograms--and the colon--get those colonoscopies. But apparently, research increasingly indicates that this general rule may not necessarily apply to the early detection of prostate cancer.Whether this is true or not is worthy of reasoned discussion. But catch this looking-down-his-nose comment by...

“To speak in a patronizing, supercilious or pompous manner, especially at length.”
Well, yeah, maybe I do… and… maybe I don’t.
But, once again, unless you’re my sponsor or my God, if that is your judgment of me, you have wasted your breath and your gray matter. Of course, I’m happy that I can build a small condo in your mind. Perhaps you’ve left someone else alone while showing me your attention.
I’m living a life beyond my wildest dreams, on borrowed time and - sober! And I’m not about to put my serenity, my peace of mind, my sobriety, in your back pocket!
I’m also not your whipping boy, your doormat. BTW - you bring back principles the oldtimers taught me. One holds true here - “If you spot it, you got it.” Obv...

Why is hindsight 20/25 in diabetes?

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Childhood, Adult Onset, Drugs, Research, Opinion, Allie Beatty, SupportBev did a great job covering the study of obese mice having protection from elevated blood sugar due to a plethora of adiponectin. Adiponectin was shown to enhance insulin signaling which transported the excess glucose to less harmful areas of the body, rather than the cells which would endure diabetes complications. The results of this study created a condition called ratones mórbidamente obesos - which sounds better in Spanish because in English this means morbidly obese mice.
You know what they say about hindsight, right? A study from a year ago revealed some good news and some bad news. Good news first - turns out Type 2 diabetes drugs using troglitazone increased adiponectin. Rez...

I watched the Wolf Blitzer interview yesterday with the Vice-President of the United States, Dick Cheney. Rarely have I seen a more defensive, arrogance-filled and off-putting subject of an interview on television. VP Cheney basically stated that the US Congress can say and do whatever it wishes about the way that he and his colleagues in the Executive Branch have micromanaged the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Effectively, it doesn't matter one iota to them what the US population and their duly-elected representatives think of the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld-Rove mission. Nothing will change in their approach. The only way to dissuade the administration from carrying on their failed approaches in this war is to force the Democratic leadership to cut off funding for the war. This would leave our tr...
