I’ve never heard of the Pilot Hi-Tec-C pen before yesterday, but apparently there is quite a passionate community built around them. A pair of designers in Brooklyn made a beautiful milled stainless steel holder for the Hi-Tec-C cartridge, and is selling them for $50 via their Kickstarter Page. They are over 7000% funded, so they’ll be definitely making these; afterwards, the pens will retail for $99. You have until August 15, 2011 to grab one!

Be sure to watch their adorable video. Designers that are best friends FTW! Kickstarter link: Pen Type A: A Minimal Pen. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I spent a good chunk of time yesterday testing whether I could use the Network (aka Multisite) features of WordPress. The three holdups were the directory structure requirement, the inability to use “site folders” for legacy installations, and the new permalink structure. All three can be overcome, so I’ll be converting the website over the next week. The advantage? I’ll be able to consolidate several WordPress installs under one system, and I can finally expand into topical sub-blogs in greater depth than I felt I could do with the existing site.
On NPR’s Planet Money blog is this breakdown of the hypothetical cost of a hit pop song for a record label, using artist Rihanna. I find it fascinating for two reasons: getting a glimpse at the process that record labels use to create hits, and getting an idea of the relative costs of doing business. For example, the cost of supporting talent—songwriters, producers, production—tallies to $78,000, on average, for a single song. The lion’s share of the money goes to marketing, flying the artist around for promotions, and schmoozing the radio people, adding $1,000,000.00 to the total bill. If the song makes all that money back, then Rihanna gets paid. What a weird business model… (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

A little late-night twittering happened to cast my eye on the news of a new post from Kathy Sierra, who once enthralled an entire generation of creatives with her mission of helping others be more awesome. The post is up on Hugh McLeod’s blog at Gaping Void: Pixie Dust & The Mountain of Mediocrity, and reminds me what’s important about making products. I’d lost sight of this simple premise: it’s totally about helping other people be more awesome. Not only is it sound psychology, it reminds me to put compassion and love for the work first. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

My friend Sabina’s husband Blake is off building schools in southern Sudan, which is one of the most adventurous and generous things I can imagine anyone doing. I’ve been following his blogging, and his recent entry Worst Dressed Man in Sudan contains a revelation that I’m finding applicable to myself: he’s finding that he actually isn’t the adventuring type. On the surface, it looks like he’s living the adventure, but at the same time he makes the distinction between being adventurous and having an interesting life. That’s a fascinating distinction that I will have to reflect on further. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I was just reviewing some stats from Amazon and it looks like the most popular book for readers of this site is The Personal MBA. If you missed it, be sure to read through our review of The Personal MBA.
Statistically speaking, there is a very high probability you’ll enjoy it. It is the type of book that is very relevant regardless of what industry you work in and regardless of what position you hold.

I just posted the latest podcast with my buddy Sid; it’s a fast-paced 30 minutes of us talking about the people we know that are doing inspiring things, and what we’re doing too to try to be a part of it. It’s a little heavy on the geek culture references, but I think at least a few of you out there will appreciate hearing about how people around us are out there doing things. I’m pretty happy with the way this one came out :) Listen to Dave & Sid’s Unnamed Podcast #023 online or on iTunes. If you’re on Facebook, we have our podcast page…give us a like if you are so inclined! (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I’ve been using my beloved Cachet Classic Graphic 9×12 Sketchbook a lot, and found myself wishing that it had some pre-printed ETP grids in it just now. I then thought…why not make them? I certainly would like one. During the next print run, I might have to arrange for a few custom ones to be made. I wonder if anyone else would be interested in one. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

A quick note that I added two versions of the Compact Calendar for sale. These are redesigned in color using Adobe Illustrator. I made twelve versions for each US$5.00 download, each starting on a different month of 2011, so you would always have a full 12 months of planning through the entire year.

They are now with two 8.5×11 (one with US Federal holidays) and one A4 formats available. Visit my Digital Downloads Store to purchase. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

Richard Harrison, who wrote me yesterday to make sure I wasn’t heading down a road of crap (thanks man!), also pointed out two-shay.com. It’s “two brothers on personal development, philosophy, and being awesome”, and I found their article Avoid Bullshit Goals to be a timely kick in the pants. If you ever get tired waiting for me to get to the point in my writing, two-shay.com will be a welcome respite. Check it out!
I’ve just created an official page for this website on Facebook, so those of you who would like to keep connected with what’s going on behind-the-scenes can heckle me from a safe distance. Bring it! :) I plan on posting some more works-in-progress thoughts there, and I’m hoping it will be easier to interact with people there than it is on my Twitter. So if you’re using Facebook, check the new page out at http://facebook.com/DavidSeahCom. Thanks! (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I’m thinking the initial run will be between 4×6 and 5×7, use double-wire binding, heavy covered board covers, and smooth paper stock that is thick enough to not bleed through or feather using a Lamy Medium Nib w/ Noodler’s Bulletproof Black. Fine Point Sharpie will be the acid test that would be nice; it’ll depend on the paper samples that come in and the cost. Also will investigate the rounded corner option.

I’m expecting to get some paper samples this week from the rep, and am testing various inks and pen combinations. If you have a suggestion on inks to test with, let me know your recommendations. Thanks! (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I got an email from Jorge Luis, letting me know that he’d made a Rainlender skin based on the Compact Calendar. From what I can tell, Rainlender is a desktop calendar app for Mac, Linux, and Windows that appears right on your desktop. I haven’t tried it myself, but it looks like a neat idea.
I recently bought a couple of glass water bottles, and took some pictures of it with the new camera rig. Rather than post the review as a blog post, I’m putting it in a new section on the website for documenting techniques, reviews, and how-tos in an easy-to-browse format. The navigational structure isn’t yet there, but I’m hoping it will be a much friendlier browsing environment than the old wiki while also concentrating that delicious Google juice ;-) (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

Had a big sweet potato leftover from Thanksgiving. Still seemed firm, so peeled it and sliced it into pieces about 4cm square and 3-6mm thick. Heated vegetable oil in 10″ heavy skillet (about 2mm deep) between “medium” and “medium high” on electric burner.

Monitored temperature of oil and pan with RayTech MT4 as the slices cooked. I was looking for the point where browning started to occur, indicating caramelization. This started around 310-325 degrees. Noted that number of pieces in pan determined equilibrium of pan temperature (reinforcing the rule of thumb about “crowding the pan” when browning). About 6-minutes per side, at 325 degrees or so, produced reasonably browned and cooked sweet potato slices, which I blotted and then sprinkled kosher ...

I’ve been interested in the thermal energy transfer characteristics of cooking lately. Took 9″ stock pot, 3.5″ of water, brought to rolling boil. Ginger slices, some salt, some cooking wine added, heat shut off. 1lb 4oz split chicken breast (2 pieces) added, covered with burner off, but remaining on it.

35 minutes elapsed. Standing temperature of water, measured with RayTech MT4, was 160 degrees. Chicken interior temperature 140ish degrees, which means it isn’t cooked to death though not high enough temperature to kill salmonella. Ya take your chances for the sake of taste. Ate with a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil. Delicious.

Will derive energy estimates later. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I’m way behind on updates to the various forms…thank you for your patience! I’m implementing a new organization system at the same time, so I may do quick conversions of last year’s forms (stripping the years) and going back to do a complete changeover one-by-one. Ugh! But it will be AWESOME when it’s all done!

The holidays have been good to me, though, with much more friends n’ family activity than in years past. More on that as I get back into the rhythm of things. Happy 2011! I am feeling very positive about this year :-) (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I’ve just posted the anniversary podcast from Sid and myself in a special hour-long format. Topics covered: Christmas gift traditions, Tron: Legacy and geeky tradition, and Sid’s viral muppet marriage proposal that’s been sweeping the Internet. Listen to The Unnamed Podcast #14 to hear it all. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

My friend Sid Ceaser recently conspired to shoot a secret marriage proposal video in the style of a movie trailer, using muppet versions of himself and his longtime girlfriend Sara. Not only that, he was able to convince the local indy movie theater to show it between some real movie trailers to surprise the tears right out of her. His recent blog post “The Proposal” – My Cinematic Love Letter to Sara Prindiville links to the final video (on YouTube), with copious behind-the-scenes notes and footage. Super awesome! Warning: VERY ROMANTIC. (Source: David Seah - Design, Development, Inspiration, Empowerment)

I had an issue with my design website: FancyBox was broken on FireFox and Internet Explorer. It worked fine on Chrome, my daily browser. It turned out there was a conflict with the venerable Download Counter plugin for real-time web analytics package Mint running on the main domain. Download Counter rewrites the anchor HREF to redirect through a PHP script, which breaks Fancybox’s (and prettyPhoto’s) attempts to load the image. Quickie solution: configure Download Counter to ignore image files. Then cuss a lot until you feel better :-) I used Firefox’s “inspect element” command, which revealed the otherwise-invisible HREF voodoo. It looks at how great achievers get and keep their high level of skill and talks about the need for specific intentional practice. If it sounds like a book you’d be interested in, you might checkout this free summary you can get in audio or written form.

Thinking about Posco’s comment about the usefulness of knowing origin in tool use, when abstraction is ultimately more powerful. I tend to lock-up when I don’t know the originating context and ultimate application of an abstraction; a good chunk of my process is devoted to ferreting out that information before I start. Without this grounding, it just seems arbitrary memorization, which I find difficult because my memory works around organizing principles and associations. It has been difficult to find teachers capable of delivering this insight, which is why I’m so militant about it. It is one of the ways I don’t fit in with typical practice, which is a problem in some ways (slower startup) and a boon in others (better in the long run).
From Wikipedia’s article on Axioms: A lesson learned by mathematics in the last 150 years is that it is useful to strip the meaning away from the mathematical assertions (axioms, postulates, propositions, theorems) and definitions. — that might explain why nothing made sense to me in math class. They could have told me why. Apparently, it’s because if you just accept something as true, it helps streamlines the learning process. If you call that learning. I call it indoctrination.
Some people were quite ecstatic today, thinking that Facebook finally listened to their pleas by adding a “Dislike” button. Sadly, they were mistaken. Not only has the social networking site not added the oft-requested button – the “news” of it being here is a scam that will wreak havoc on an unsuspecting user’s account.

Apple has a patent for displaying ads in an operating system. Basically, ads would pop up and prevent you from doing work every once in awhile. The patent shows a mechanism where the ads could be delayed for 10 minutes or you could view one immediately so it won’t interrupt you for a bit longer. What do you think? Are people so accustomed to being interrupted during work that they would accept something like this?

Brett Kelly has written a book called Evernote Essentials. If you’ve been considering using Evernote, this is the guide you’ll want to makes you are getting the most out of it. The PDF is well illustrated and covers a lot of the details that you probably won’t discover on your own. It took me about 3 minutes of skimming through the book to discover 5 huge timesavers that I didn’t previously know about. The book isn’t just limited to Evernote. It shows you how to integrate other services as well. For example, there are detailed instructions showing how to set up Gmail to automatically log receipts from Amazon purchases into Evernote. The PDF book is $25 and is highly recommended.

This tax is only due on earned income and it is split between you and your employer. A recent tax court ruled that severance payments are not earned income and are thus not subject to FICA tax. Gretchen just wrapped up a television advertising campaign. You can watch the ad on YouTube. If you are interested in television advertising, be sure to read how she used Google to get her ad on national television.

Our DropBox review looks at a great free application that can help you backup and synchronize your important files across multiple computers. Best of all the basic DropBox plan is free.It looks like our last email newsletter went out without showing the excerpt for each post and instead only showed an internal ad for our ambient sounds. This ad should have only been shown when viewing the full feed. This wasn’t intentional and I apologize for the mess up. I’m working with Aweber to get this fixed.

Geez, a not so easy job. Coming up with a blog rounds hosting schedule is well, challenging. But, since I have no choice but to assign (any admin takers pls?) one host each week for the rest of TBR season two, I came up with this (not so genius) list. I simply got the ordered host from the commentators’ list in this post. Again, please be reminded of our hosting schedule and guidelines!

A single interruption of only a few seconds can cost you 15 minutes of your day. When you get distracted from concentrating, it takes up to 15 minutes to get back to where you were before the distraction. Our ambient sounds help reduce the amount of noise distractions in your workplace. Don’t forget, they are still on sale at a greatly reduced rate.

Over the past few days, the most popular post on this site has been our explanation of how Digital Signatures & Encryption works. Understanding this is key for our society to get past the point of using dead dinosaurs (gasoline) to ship around dead trees (paper). Please take a few minutes to read it and pass it on. The more people that understand it, the easier it will be to move to more paperless and more efficient work processes.

I’m questioning how they calculate “influence”, but it still feels good to see Productivity501 at the very top of a list like that.

Today an insurance company needed my signature, they sent me a TIFF file. I used my scanned signature, added it to the TIFF and sent it back. They said they couldn’t accept that because it came over email. Since the document they sent me had their signature, I asked if I should reject it because it came to me over email. The agents said I was “too funny”. I sent them the same TIFF via fax and they seemed happy with that. This is why we need to get everyone using true digital signatures and encryption on email.

Today I was getting ready to order material for a new deck. The manufacturer was already giving me about 20% off the normal price. I figured that the sales of high end decking materials might be down in this economy so I decided to ask for an additional $1,000 off. The sales person said he would call me back. Thirty minutes later I had reduced the price by $1,000 simply by asking for a discount. Not everyone will be willing (or able) to give a discount, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Leo at www.mnmlist.com (got to love that url) has a Definitive Guide to a Minimalist Mac Setup that is an interesting read for OS X users out there. I think he is missing out by not using Time Machine, but he links to a bunch of great apps and has a lot of ideas on how to keep your computer lean and work focused.

The other day my assistant told me, “When I proof your writing I can tell if you used Dictate. Usually you make sense.” Every once in a while she will run into a sentence that she can’t make heads or tails of that came from MacSpeech. It is still a wonderful tool, but her comment underscores the importance of carefully proofing your work if a computer transcribed it for you.

Link: The Noguchi Filing System is a way to organize the paper in your life without requiring that you categorize it. Basically, you use “pockets” to hold everything and place them vertically on a shelf. Whenever you need something from a pocket, you remove it from it’s place and place it back on the shelf as the leftmost pocket. This means that, over time, all of your frequently used pockets will be on the left and the least used pockets will be on the right.

If you have a Google Voice account (formerly Grand Central) you might want to checkout their new application for Blackberries and Android phones. It appears to do a lot of what the GVDialer does, but it is free. You can send SMS messages and place calls using your Google Voice number. If you have a plan where you can add a number to your “circle” or “friends” you can add your Google Voice number and drastically reduce the number of minutes you have to use. Google Voice is still in a closed beta, so there doesn’t appear to be a way to sign up for an account if you don’t already have one.

I’ve been critical of American Express Platinum Concierge Service, but last week I had an interaction that was very impressive. A deer ran into our car and broke the mirror. Due to a misunderstanding, the local shop didn’t order the part in time for our trip. I sent the concierge service a map of the route we were going to take, the time we were leaving and asked them to find me any dealer with the part in stock on our route. The concierge came back with a list of dealers with it in stock along with a list of dealers that could get it in two days near our destination. This was a huge time saver for me and very helpful. Do you have any success stories from using the concierge service?

In highschool, I tried a month of using a Day Timer planner. It was nice and I liked the small wirebound planners, but I ended up using a Day Runner planner even though the pages tended to rip out because it only used a three ring binder. In college I went to a Franklin seminar and started using the Franklin system. While the actual pieces of paper weren’t too different from what I had used before, the training that went along with it was very valuable.
I stuck with the Franklin for about six years, but eventually found that I was at my computer enough I could rely on a digital calendar. My switch to digital was complete when I finally moved to a Blackberry that could sync over the air with my calendar, contacts and email. The only think I’m really lacking at this poi...

For Christmas, my assistant bought me what has become my favorite pen. It is a Pilot G2 pen with a metal barrel. It has just the right amount of weight and retains everything I like about the plastic G2 but with much better materials. I made one change to it, by swapping out the black ink with a blue cartridge from a normal plastic G2 pen.

Make your WordPress site accessible on a mobile phone with this plugin. Now your posts, pages, archives and comments can be viewed on a mobile device. Standards are supported, posts and comments can be submitted by phone and your WordPress mobile site is easily moneitized by AdMob.

I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think. I have checked it out on my mobile phone and it looks good IMHO.

QDIS Blog Normal Theme and Look is Back

After upgrading to the latest Wordpress version about two weeks ago I had some problems getting my old theme to work. I finally got that fixed and the QDIS Blog is back now. The only minor issue right now is with the page navigation at the top. It now always says “99999″ pages. I’m trying to figure out how to fix that but for now, the blog is back with its normal look. out.
I hadn’t posted for a while because I was spending my free time trying to figure out how to get my old theme back so now that it is up and running, expect more posting.

I recently upgraded Wordpress and now my old theme for controlling the look of the site no longer works properly. I’m going with the Wordpress default until I can get the usual theme working again. Sorry for the change.
