The newness of their field naturally leads to a number of misconceptions about physician assistants. If you’ve never met a PA or been treated by one, you’re left to guess what it is that PAs do, and sometimes these guesses (though understandable), are just plain wrong. Hoping to dispel some of these, I’ve made up [...] (Source: Inside PA Training)

The prerequisites for PA School vary widely by program, but one that you’ll definitely find in every PA training program is physiology.
At UC Davis, the first meaty class we take – in the summer quarter of year one – is pathophysiology, the physiology of disease. It takes physiology a step further by covering what happens in the body when things go wrong and break down – inflammation, infection, cell death etc. Pathophysiology provides an interesting foundation of medical knowledge that makes you feel like you’re really in PA school, and it sets the stage for the learning to come.
But you’ll recall that PA school is generally between 24 and 30 months. There just isn’t time to review the prerequisites for PA school like physiology. What does...

If you become an effective pre-physician assistant student, before you know it, you’ll be successful (non-pre-) physician assistant student. Borrowing from things we did, saw others do, or feel are vital in PA school, we present here the top 5 habits that we think will make you highly effective.
None of these items require particular expertise in science or medicine. But practicing them will cultivate behaviors that will speed your learning and make good impressions in PA school, your preceptorship, and eventually in your workplace. Some are things we wish we did back when we were pre-pa students. How cool is that for you? Our loss can be your gain!

Physician assistant admissions committees can be tough to please. A reader emailed us this week with a question about it:
Hey, guys. After exploring your site, I’m convinced that PA is a better fit for me than MD. My question is: how does one convince a physician assistant admissions committee? Any help in the matter will be much appreciated !
It’s a huge question–one we could write a whole blog on (wait – we did!). So we tried to focus on the big picture here. What do physician assistant admissions committees see that sets an applicant apart from the crowd? Here are a couple tidbits that seem relevant to us:

Most PA schools only accept applications through the CASPA, the Physician Assistant Education Association’s application wing. CASPA ...

The Pre-Physician Assistant Major: Choose Wisely

The question we are asked most frequently by pre-pa students is: “Which pre-physician assistant major should I choose?”
We love hearing this question because it tells us that these pre-physician assistant students are thinking ahead. If you’re planning to attend a PA school far enough in advance of actually applying that you can consider which major is ideal, then you’re giving things plenty of thought. We’re going to tell you what we think, but first…
Our Friendly Opinion Disclaimer
As we say in almost every article, each PA program is different. So before we weigh in on this issue, here’s our disclaimer: make sure you contact schools that interest you and ask them specifically: “Does your program prefer any particular major or types...

Physician’s Assistant, or Physician Assistant?

Is the correct title for a PA Physician Assistant, or Physician‘s Assistant? Well, if you’re not sure, I can’t blame you. The confusion over the correct title for PAs is even worse than the confusion over what PAs do. So let me set the record straight here and now:
PAs are Physician Assistants (no apostrophe-s in the title).*
It may seem like a trivial matter, but if you want to become a physician assistant, you need to know how to say it properly. Yes, we hear people messing it up all the time – even doctors, and occasionally even some PAs! If you join this young field, prepare yourself for the reality: you’ll hear people getting your title wrong a lot. If that makes you think twice about becoming a PA, then you probably shouldn’t become one...

On June 28, 2011, I crossed the halfway mark to completing PA school. In honor of this momentous occasion here’s list of just ten awesome things I did during my first year in PA school (click the red links to read a few of them):

Wrote my first prescription. Since I was still a student, my preceptor had to co-sign it, but I wrote it myself and presented it to my patient. It was for a powerful antibiotic. It read: Levaquin, 750 mg, #14. Take one tablet by mouth once daily X 14 days for pneumonia. No refills, No substitutions. Notice that I didn’t use Latin abbreviations for it, like PO for “by mouth,” or qd for “once daily.” These abbreviations are (slowly) being abandoned in medicine because they can lead to misread errors by pharmacists...

Last post, we learned that psychiatry is among the highest paying physician assistant specialties, if not the highest paying specialty. A reader asked us just what being a psychiatric physician assistant is like, and this article aims to answer this question.
Psychiatry is the medical specialty of mental health, also known as behavioral health. In this physician assistant specialty, you will treat people with mental disorders. The list of disorders is long, and includes depression, anxiety, and insomnia, drug abuse/addition, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression), schizophrenia, and many others.
Psychiatry used to rely on psychotherapy–talk therapy–but today it rarely does. Changes in the insurance industry forced mo...

We get the question all the time about PA vs NP salary comparison. So we decided to answer in some detail.
It’s a great question, but it’s hard to find good data on NP salaries because the Bureau of Labor Statistics, where NP salaries are tracked, lumps them in with the salaries of regular nurses. This is because NPs are Advanced Practice Nurses, meaning they are nurses who have had extra training to allow them to do more. So we did some digging and the result is our new PA vs NP salary comparison page. Think of us as the Consumer Reports of PA vs NP salary information.
We hope that seeing accurate numbers for the PA vs NP salary comparison will leave you with a better understanding of both professions.

“NurseExec” is the director of nursing (DON) at a 120-bed skilled nursing facility (SNF) that has a 50/50 mix of patients needing short-term rehab and long-term care.
After working in the OR as a circulator nurse, she started out as a charge nurse in her current building, which entailed pushing a med cart and taking care of 20 patients. After nine months, she was promoted to Risk Manager and three years later became the DON.
She starts her day at 7am by rounding on nursing units, consulting with unit managers on clinical issues, and dealing with grievances and employee issues. She checks in with the charge nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs), checks shower rooms and utility rooms. Then it’s off to Morning Standup with department heads, followed by clinical rounds with ...

Chicago Public Schools this fall will open the city’s first high school specializing in healthcare, a move local hospitals hope will help relieve chronic workforce shortages.
The school, which recently used a lottery system to enroll a freshman class of 160, will have a heavy emphasis on math and science. Juniors and seniors will be able to earn credits by shadowing hospital workers and interning as assistant nurses and in other professions.

The N95 Respirator: Dental Mask of the Future?

On September 3, 2009, the Institute of Medicine issued recommendations that had been requested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the use loose paper masks are deemed inadequate because the H1N1 virus could pass through and put healthcare workers at risk.
The recommendation for healthcare workers is to switch to the N95 respirator, which forms an airtight seal around the nose and mouth.
The key issue with this switch will be the proper fitting and how the mask is worn. If properly used, the new mask filters out over 95% of the particulate matter (down to 0.3 micrometers – smaller than a virus).
The Institute of Medicine provides independent, evidence-based advice to the healthcare industry, key leaders, health professionals, and the public.
It remains to be seen wheth...

SEATTLE VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE GIVING CAMPAIGN
The Seattle Vocational Institute is beginning its Annual Giving Campaign to support the Dental Assistant students at SVI. Educated and motivated students are the key to a productive society. That is the primary reason that SVI has focused on providing a quality education in the dental field with longterm career possibilities to over fifty graduates of this program each year.
It is hoped that as many people as possible can donate to this well run program which trains minority students and students of color for jobs as dental assistants. The majority of the Seattle Vocational Institute students are low-income, minority students who rely on financial aid and scholarships to be able to attend school. The SVI dental assisting program has maintained a...

There has been a lot of interest in virtual assistants. The idea sounds great. You hire someone to do the work you need remotely. Since you don’t have to be in the same city, state or country, you are free to choose the most cost effective assistant from anywhere in the world. On the other hand, there are some significant advantages in hiring someone locally. Here are some advantages for both types of assistants.

Benefits of a virtual assistant

They can work while you sleep. If you hire someone from a different time zone, they may do the bulk of their work outside of your business hours. Depending on your line of work, it can be very convenient to hand someone a project at 5 PM and have it completed by 8 AM the next day.

A recent Northwestern University study found that what makes a person a good dating partner might not determine who is a suitable spouse.
For couples in both a dating relationship and a marriage, an important contributor to a satisfying relationship is an understanding that a partner will help the other achieve his/her dreams. That’s huge for married couples, too, but in the married relationship, it is even more substantial that the partner upholds his/her part of the commitment pledged before taking vows.
Explains Daniel Molden, assistant professor at Northwestern University and lead author of the study:
In other words, the feelings of being loved and supported that people use to judge who makes a good girlfriend or boyfriend may not be completely trustworthy in deciding who makes...

Every day, it seems, a news story tells us about a dentist or dental professional who has molested a patient during a dental appointment. The nature of dentistry (and medicine) is such that we are in a prime situation to (a) sexually harass and (b) be accused of sexual harassment. Sometimes, though, allegations of sexual harassment (not physical contact) result from how a patient perceives a dentist or dental professional.
Mitchell Karp, MSOD, tells us in his article at www.DentalOfficeMag.com, that dentists are considered powerful by patients, and because of this, patients may not feel confident telling their dentist when they feel uncomfortable.
Karp’s article, “How to avoid allegation of sexual harassment and/or discrimination: Five things you need to know,” recommends not making ...

Quick post today.
Answered the phone today and it was a “nurse for Dr. Sayed.”
“Oh really?” [Knowing she wasn't a nurse] “What’s your name?” [Linda] “And are you an RN or LPN?”
“Welll, I guess I’m just an M.A. - I’m in nursing school though”
“Guess? … Okay then - on your way. What do we need today?” [I didn't go for the kill and say, 'So you're NOT a nurse then are you?' -- She knew she was beaten]
“Jeff Gordon, birthday is 8/4/1971, needs his Cozaar 20mg refilled. Directions are 1 po daily. And give him 2 additional refills.” [Most of you already see the problem. I wrote it exactly like this. My brain was shut off momentarily as I enjoyed my flawless victory from moments earlier.]

Huh?? That’s probably what you thought when you clicked on this blog post. Depression….. The X Files….. Right. I’ll admit, I’m a scifi fan, and the X Files is one of my all-time favorite shows. I’m old enough to have enjoyed it the first time around in the ’90s, and now I’m watching the entire series again on DVD. Yes, I’m a big nerd, but I digress.
A couple of nights ago, I watched one of the many alien conspiracy episodes involving Agents Scully and Mulder, Assistant Director Skinner, Alex Krycek, and a host of other folks mixed up in a thick plot. This is somewhere in the last of nine seasons, so alien conspiracy and high drama are not new to the regular viewer by this time.
I had a few thought collisions today, leading me to compar...

In an attempt to whitewash their own actions and responsibility to uphold the highest standards of academic publishing, Catherine D. DeAngelis and Phil B. Fontanarosa — editors of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) — published an editorial defending their handling of a conflict of interest and blasting the professor who brought it to their attention. In a classic example of shooting the messenger, it’s my opinion that DeAngelis and Fontanarosa absolve themselves of all blame, and suggest that any reports where they called Lincoln Memorial University Assistant Dean of Students and Professor Jonathan Leo Ph.D., a “a nothing and a nobody” were “erroneous.” (In other words, the editors of JAMA are apparently suggesting that the Wall...

One of the advantages of coaching adults with ADHD, is that you often have some pretty creative clients. One client had trouble organizing themselves while they were out of the house and generally preferred using the computer to help her manage time.
Being a Mac person (sold them for 7 years) and knowing that she didn’t want a cell phone (so no iphone) I suggested she consider getting an ipod touch because ease of use and intuitiveness were important considerations. Also I asked if she usually lost her ipod, because the ipod touch is amazing, but kind of expensive, and that wasn’t a problem for her. She got an ipod touch it worked great for her. Here’s her review of it from the usefulness for an ADD time management perspective.
