Another holiday’s come and gone. Whether you celebrated Canada Day or Independence Day, you may be basking in the glory of a glorious holiday or exhausted from another family gathering of trying to keep your sanity in toll.
If I’ve learned anything over the years is that you could spend years working on yourself and then poof! just like that you’re back to where you started.
Maybe it’s your people-pleasing ways that return when you’re in the company of old friends who knew you way back when. Or certain relatives who trigger painful childhood memories when you are in their presence. Perhaps, the extra day of freedom could remind you just how toxic your work environment is and how much you are in need of a new job.
Whatever it is, I feel you.
The only thing we c...

Happy Mother’s Day, 2011

Happy Mother’s Day! For all the moms out there today, I wish you a very warm and thoughtful day full of the love and appreciation from your daughters and sons. I’m eternally thankful for my mom and try and let her know throughout the year of my appreciation.
Because, after all, you don’t need a special day once a year to let your loved ones know how much you care about them. While you don’t need to let them know every day, just remembering to let them know from time to time is all that’s needed. People just need to know — and hear — they are loved and appreciated (even if they’re “supposed” to know it).
Each year, our writers and bloggers put together some great entries for Mother’s Day. Here’s the batch from this year...

In one of my recent discussions with a reader of EMR and HIPAA, they said they loved this site because I don’t have any agenda. Then, they quickly clarified, your only agenda is to have transparency in the process. Your agenda is to bring to light all the information related to a certain topic so that doctors can make an informed decision.
I think this reader hit it right on the head. I really don’t have an agenda. I’m generally pro-EHR, but I understand doctors misgivings on why they’re concerned about doing it. Although, I am completely fanatical about having transparency and good information (both good and bad) about the EMR and EHR process.
That’s why I get all worked up when EMR advertising or EMR sales people provide misleading information. In fact, I ha...

Last week Microsoft announced it is entering into a partnership with Athena to make their systems more compatible. According to a spokesperson from Athena, the partnership will “enable health systems to see inpatient and ambulatory information in a single view.” The move was predicated on two hospital clients building bridges between Amalga and AthenaClinicals to share patient information.

Well, as we say goodbye to another year, I have an early new year’s present for everyone — a new blog! I’m pleased to introduce Neuroscience and Relationships with Dr. Athena Staik.
Dr. Athena Staik has been studying the brain, the neuroscience of attachments, and cutting edge tools for accelerated success and human change for over 10 years. With a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy, and an MA and BA in psychology, her work is influenced by a wide range of psychological models, with an emphasis on positive, strengths-based approaches.
“On this blog, I’d like to share some of the methods I use, principles, recent findings as it relates to the brain and healthy personal lives and relationships, how understanding how our brain and body are designed is an essential part...

CPA Comment on EMR Pricing

In response to my previous post about possibly creating an EMR pricing comparison website, I got a really interesting set of comments from a CPA who’s been assisting their clients in their EMR selection process. You might laugh at the idea of a CPA participating in the EMR selection process. Interestingly, the CPA that I use has also been asked by their clients about the EMR stimulus money and so they were grateful they could ask me some questions.
This aside, I found this person’s comments interesting. I think they also illustrate some of the challenges in EMR pricing and some of the thirst for EMR pricing also. I removed some identifying information and some other comments about EMR and HIPAA. Otherwise, the comments are in tact.
I have been pondering trying to do some sort o...

Existing EHR Vendors with CCHIT Certification

As I mentioned in my previous post about the race to be the first EHR certified (and the first ATCB to certify an EHR), there’s a lot more going on in the battle amongst the EHR certifying bodies.
The first interesting detail surrounds the previous CCHIT certified EHR vendors. This turns out to be a really great move by CCHIT. A quick look at CCHIT’s website has 49 EHR products (or modules of products) that have been certified for either the CCHIT 2011 certification or for the Preliminary ARRA certification. That’s 49 pieces of EMR software (a few less since some are different versions of the same product) have paid $22k+ in order to be certified by CCHIT.
I’ve talked to one of these EHR vendors and they said that CCHIT did a call with all current vendors and said t...

Athena Health EHR Stimulus Guarantee Program

I’m always amazed at the ability of businesses to innovate and find new ways to build their business. One of the impressive ones I’ve seen lately is Athena Health’s EHR stimulus guarantee program. Yes, you might remember that I’ve written about the EMR stimulus guarantees before. Seems like most EMR vendors are providing some sort of guarantee or promise about the EMR stimulus money.
Of course, the Athena Health EHR stimulus guarantee is probably the strongest guarantee I’ve seen. Most other EHR stimulus guarantees still require that the end user fulfill their part of the bargain or else there is no guarantee. Makes sense right? How can an EMR vendor guarantee that you’re going to actually meaningfully use their EHR software? You are the one that’s...

Justen Deal in his post, Purkinje: stealth fighter, introduced me to another SasS focused Electronic Health Record (EHR) and practice management service provider called Purkinje. Interesting read on the company and its history. The principle owner of Purkinje is John Doerr, a partner in Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers, who provides venture capital funding for some of the largest technology companies in the world.Like Athena Health, who I do know about, Purkinje appears headed in the same direction. I think this business model has a bright future in helping quickly ramp up the adoption of electronic health information systems in medium to small physicians practices. Justen's post provides his prospective on the cost/benefit analysis as compared to traditional EMR software vendors. Also,...
