When Our Intuition Leads Us to Bad Decisions

Six years ago, Malcolm Gladwell released a book entitled Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. In his usual style, Gladwell weaves stories in-between descriptions of scientific research the support his hypothesis that our intuition can be surprisingly accurate and right.
One year ago, authors Daniel J. Simons and Christopher F. Chabris, writing in The Chronicle of Higher Education not only had some choice words for Gladwell’s cherry-picking of the research, but also showed how intuition probably only works best in certain situations, where there is no clear science or logical decision-making process to arrive at the “right” answer. For instance, when choosing which ice cream is “best.”
Reasoned analysis, however, works best in virtually every other si...

Check out this hilarious (read: sad, pathetic, desperate) audition tape featuring actor Chris Klein (Election, American Pie) trying out for a role in the musical Mamma Mia by “singing” a song called “Lay All Your Love on Me.” Our sister site Crushable first posted this very disturbing video, and we thank them for it. Except that now we can’t get Klein’s awful rendition of this song out of our heads. Is this real? We don’t know. But for the love of God, somebody, please, stop him. Or, at least, hire him.

Okay, so I have this huge audition on Saturday for a dance show... my choreography needs some serious help (it's getting there, but not good enough yet) and my technique is less than stellar after too much time at a desk. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything I need to do done! Plus the foot is driving me mad, but I don't care at this point, I'm just working through the pain.I wish I had a video camera so that I could post the different versions of the dance I'm working on, and you guys could all vote on which one is best! Two days is totally not enough time to get ready for this... it should be fun though!
American Idol Season 7: Charleston Auditions

Honestly, I wasn’t at all happy at the turnout of the auditions held in Charleston (ooohhhh…an AI judge wannabe? Hehehe). But there are some interesting auditions, like that of Michelle and Jeffrey Lampkin (the first ones who appeared on the Youtube video embedded in this post). They performed a duet very well, although I’ve got to partially agree with Simon when he said that Jeffrey was a better singer than Michelle. But it may be perhaps Michelle’s voice didn’t just come out very prominently in the duet so as not to clash with Jeffrey’s voice. I think what they should have done is to have asked both of them to perform solo auditions, in addition to the duet. But, overall, I think they deserve a chance to go to Hollywood.
As for Amy Flynn, she’s g...

American Idol Season 7: San Diego Auditions

I had tons of patients at the clinic today, which made me thought that I might not be able to get home on time for the 6 p.m. show of AI (I know there are replays but I just want to watch it the soonest possible time). Good thing I was able to make some way how to see all those patients for preemployment and annual medical evaluation and got home just about when the American Idol theme was already playing on QTV.
I’d say I like the San Diego auditions better than the previous one, which was in Dallas, Texas (but, of course, I still like the Dallas episode because my favorite, Zpia, is in it. See her video in my previous post. Imagine, she’s also got a MySpace page!). The auditions in San Diego produced a lot of talents, I think.
Here’s a video of the “winners&#822...

American Idol Season 7 Begins Tonight

This is a bit of a late post, as the season premiere of American Idol Season 7 already was aired earlier at around 6 p.m. at QTV 11.
Personally, I was excited anticipating this season premiere, as I’ve always been a fan of American Idol show since Season 5. And though catching the Idol at the earliest time possible meant leaving the clinic early, I still did, making sure that all patients had been seen already and all the lab tests soon to be finished. There’s TV at the clinic, but I didn’t want to stay for another 2 hours there, though.
The auditions first landed on Philadelphia and there were, I think, 600+ hopefuls who patiently lined up and battled the smothering heat in the “City of Brotherly Love”.
Certainly Philadelphia have a bunch of good talents. I h...
