The Webby Awards have announced the 2010 winners. From WebbyAwards.com:
With nearly 70 categories, Website entries make up the majority of Webby Awards Winners, Nominees and Honorees. Some are beautiful to look at and interact with. Others are a testament to usability and functionality. And a handful excel across the board. To be selected among the best is an incredible achievement worthy of praise — and perhaps a little bragging.
Guess which website won the Health category? Yes, WebMD.

If you are a regular reader of Pharma Marketing Blog, you know that I generally do not like awards that are given to pharmaceutical marketers by trade publications. Such awards are very suspect because of the inherent conflicts of interests involved -- the winners tend to be the agencies that advertise the most in the sponsoring publication or purchase big page ads announcing that they won the award.Recently, Dose of Digital, which maintains a wiki list of pharma and healthcare organization social media initiatives, hosted the "2010 Dose of Digital Dosie Award" to be given to the most deserving sites on the wiki list. You can find the finalists here. The winners will be announced at the upcoming 2nd Annual Social Communications & Healthcare Conference in New York City. Unfortunately, I...

Last week, Marlee Matlin premiered her new show “My Deaf Family” – on YouTube. The Academy Award-winning actress and contestant on last season’s “Dancing with the Stars” wanted to let people know about the Firls: a family of six living in California, who are all deaf except for their 15-year-old son, Jared, and three-year-old son, Elijah. No major networks were willing to air it; so she launched it on YouTube. Matlin recently talked with the Los Angeles Times about unveiling her project on the Web, and the inspiration behind it. Check out the first episode below and tell us what you think.

Is there a formal nomination process?
No. Any organization can submit an entry, and/ or encourage others to do so.
Can a vendor and a client organization submit a joint entry? if not, who submits the entry, and who wins the Award?
The Awards are designed to directly recognize Users, not Vendors.
I've got free wifi and a bit of battery time left so here's the short, link free version. In summary, it was excellent. I didn't win the best blog post award, but had zero (well not zero since that would be mathematically illogical since I was nominated) expectation of getting in and the winning post (and winning blogger) was a stunner. Best part of the experience as ever was spending time with a load of intriguing, articulate, provocative and funny people.Myself a selection of other lovely ladies meet in the presidential suite of the well posh g hotel for the Ladies Tea Party, organised by the force of nature that is Sabrina Dent. We had lovely pink wine and delicate snacks and there was nail painting and nail polish remover and it was all fabulous. The women I met with, some I knew alread...

It's the weekend of the Irish Blog Awards and I'm off bright and early to Galway tomorrow morning to join the party. Amazingly, I'm a finalist in the best blog post category for a post I wrote last June when Duncan and I had spent a beautiful few days away together, just the two of us. It's a post that flowed out of me, one that expresses my feelings of love, pride, contentment and joy in my child. I'm really happy it was selected to be among the final few posts, astonished too! But it was a lovely surprise in a downer of a week so thanks very much to all the judges for getting it this far. I hope a few people will have read it and consider that parenting a disabled child isn't less than, just different. Here's the list of posts in the category which is sponsored by KRO IT Solutions Grandad...

Duncan had another appointment with the dentist this morning. Lady and Thomas have both started school now (more on that later- but it's going well) so it was just the two of us. The 1st time we were at that dentist it was a huge struggle to get him in the building. He stood outside crying for ages while I tried to reason with him. We made it into the waiting room where The Tweenies was playing on a tv, henceforth that room was known as "The Tweenies Room." Duncan utterly refused to leave the room so the dentist came to him and after Thomas modelled the procedure, Duncan consented to allow the dentist a brief glimpse inside his mouth right there. On the next visit he made it to the examination room but not onto the chair, though he did enjoy moving the stuffed dinosaur with the big teeth u...

Alleged philanderer Jesse James
With Jesse James joining the likes of Tiger Woods, John Edwards, Mark Sanford, Eliot Spitzer, and David Letterman as the latest in a very long line of celebrity males admitting bizarre, pathetic, and downright sleazy acts of infidelity, I can honestly say that I would not want to trade places with their wives for anything – not the money, fame, power, glamour, mansions, or Academy Awards (okay, maybe for an Oscar). Elin, Elizabeth, Jenny, Silda, Regina, and now Sandra, you have my deepest sympathies, but I will never know what it’s like to be in your very expensive designer shoes.
That’s because I know for a fact that my husband would never have an affair. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Poor, naïve woman. Never say never. No one goes into a marri...

Unless you live under a rock, recently you’ve probably seen headlines involving the “Oscar Curse.” What kind of gossip are the tabloids spreading now? Let’s walk with the Ghost of Best Actress Past. We’ll start today, just over two weeks following Sandra Bullock’s Oscar win for The Blind Side, and less than a week after Jesse James, her husband of five years, issued a public apology for cheating. Simultaneously, Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes publicly announced their split, a year after she collected her BA statue from the Academy for The Reader.
This is a tough road, but let’s keep going. Reese Witherspoon was named best actress in 2005 (Walk the Line); she finalized her divorce with Ryan Phillipe in October 2006. Hillary Sw. was on top in 20...

Awards – Research Blogging – Winners and finalists in the Research Blogging Awards 2010 announced today!
A Clever Periodic Table from Sciencebase | Genome Alberta Education – It's official. My periodic table of science bloggers is clever, even if it maybe didn't include enough Canadians.
Go Green! Use the Internet on your mobile phone – Nokia claims updating Facebook from your mobile phone uses just 1% of the energy needed to do the same thing on a desktop PC. (Of course, that doesn't take into account the wireless infrastructure and cell network power demands, I'm sure).
Periodic Table of Science Bloggers on Universe Today – Proud to see that Universe Today featured my PT of science bloggers. I created it on the morning of March 19, and by...

The winners of the Researchblogging contest have been selected.
I was rudely confronted with the harsh reality that I lost from a fellow Philosophy, Research, or Scholarship blogger, Richard Grant of Confessions of a (former) Lab Rat (and previously of Life of a Lab Rat).
Very subtle Richard just left a note: “Sorry”.

The Oscars are always fun to watch. This year’s awards couldn’t pass without a little controversy though. During the In Memoriam segment, Farrah Fawcett was not included among the actors shown and I was a little perturbed when the segment ended and her face was not shown on screen with the other actors that had passed away during the year.
Farah lost her battle with anal cancer and I wrote a blog to commemorate her just after her death. I think she was such a big icon during my life, and especially when I was a young woman, that I almost feel snubbed that they forgot her.
Her battle with cancer was chronicled by herself and was terrifically brave. Her death reminded me that although I beat cancer once I still need to be vigilant against this foe. In my life it claimed a breast, i...

Whoa! ResearchBlogging.org just listed the finalists for their 2010 blogging awards. Brain Windows is one of five finalists for Expert-Level research blog of the year.

Cynics might say that giving out small monetary awards ($50, oh yeah baby!) and allowing voting only by bloggers registered by researchblogging.org is a cost-effective way to promote their site. This is hardly the only promotional tactic out there though. About once a week, I get an email from some firm that wants link share or have a service giveaway to influence content on Brain Windows to drive traffic to their site. I’ve never posted those things because the message never serves the readership of Brain Windows. However, Researchblogging.org does serve a useful purpose beyond just a content aggregator. Post...

Feynman summarizes everything I think about awards, prizes and societies in science. No, I never won anything, and if I do someday (remote probability) I will decline it.

This only reminds me more and more about some scientists websites that first mention their awards, prizes and interviews before any scientific content. You know who you are. (Source: Blind.Scientist)

The drugmaker received the prizes at the Public Eye Awards in Davos, Switzerland, for conducting research on transplant patients in China without knowing the origin of the organs donated. The honors are presented each year on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, Swissinfo reports.
It was “highly likely” that some of the organs used in a Roche study in China were taken from executed prisoners, the source of 90 per cent of all transplanted organs in the country, according to the award organizers, the Berne Declaration and Greenpeace Switzerland. Roche is testing the effectiveness of Cellcept, which weakens the immune system so a transplanted organ can be accepted, on hundreds of kidney and liver transplant patients.

Every year the entrants for the Best of the Web awards multiply. In 2009, veterans stood tough as new kids dazzled. It was difficult to narrow the list to just ten (and some more faves we want to mention), but here are our picks for the top blogs written by people who have been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder.

1. The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive
Do’s and Don’ts for the Mentally Interesting was a BBC Radio play based on Seaneen’s blog produced last May and just nominated for a Mind Mental Health Media Award. Always a compelling and honest read, it was no fluke or sympathy vote that caused us to place this blog near the top of our list last year - it deserves many accolades. Well done.
2. The Trouble With Spikol

Yes, awards' season is upon us -- even those of us in the pharma advertising and marketing business. One of the most prestigious awards in that category are the MM&M Awards. The MM&M Award Ceremony will be held on October 29, 2009 and I'm not invited, yet! I've been to this event in the past (see "MM&M Award Winners Announced at Gala NY Event!") and thought how cool it would be if I were to join the winners on stage and be photographed along with them. Sort of like Woody Allen's Zelig character who was digitally inserted into historic newsreel footage. But then I saw the following scene from rapper Kanye West's interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance of her music video award. The MM&M Award finalists have been chosen (see here) and Beyonce is NOT on the list! Will there be a "Kan...

The Carter Center does good work to help promote de-stigmatizing mental health information and journalism, so I thought this announcement was worth reproducing here to help them publicize this year’s fellowship awards.
After receiving a record number of applicants, the Carter Center’s Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism — the only journalism fellowships exclusively for mental health — announced today the winners of its 2009-2010 awards (see below for full list of fellows and their project topics).
Research proves that a healthy employee costs the company less money. How to encourage employers to create a healthy work environment? By rewarding and recognizing them.

That’s what Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle does each year with his Worksite Wellness Awards. Employers can send in applications that consider health education and screening, tobacco use, and other programs the company may have in place.
This year’s gold winners were:
•	Saint Joseph’s Hospital (Marshfield)
•	Creation Technologies Wisconsin Inc. (Oak Creek)
•	Gundersen Lutheran Health System (La Crosse)
•	Memorial Health Center (Medford)
•	Polaris Industries, Inc. (Osceola)
•	QuadGraphics (Sussex)

Mental Health America (the singer formerly known as the National Mental Health Association) turned 100 this year, and we’d like to wish them a Happy Birthday. They trace their roots back to 1909 and Clifford W. Beers:

We began our work in 1909 when Clifford W. Beers, a young businessman who struggled with a mental illness and shared his story with the world in his autobiography “A Mind That Found Itself,” created a national citizens’ group to promote mental health and improve conditions for children and adults living with these health problems. It was a revolutionary act and attracted prominent national leaders of the time, including the philosopher William James and the Rockefeller family.

The modern NMHA organization wasn’t formed until 1950, and in that time has help...

My regrets are different from the narrator of “The Kite Runner.” I didn’t watch my friend get raped because I was too afraid of standing up to the bully. But I’m very aware of the holes in my heart from those times I didn’t do the right thing.
Out of fear.
Out of selfishness.
Out of desperation.
Out of loneliness.

There were two major awards events in the past week. The first was the 2009 DTC National Advertising Awards presented by DTC Perspectives Magazine at the conference of the same name held in Washington, DC on April 15 to 17 (see results here). The second was the Manny Awards presented by Med Ad News on April 22 (see press release here).Neither of these awards had a category for Best Social Media Campaign or Agency despite all the recent focus on social media by drug industry agencies at industry conferences and on Twitter (see, for example, Social Pharma Unconference). The Gold winner in DTC National's "Best Digital Media Campaign" category DID go to a "social media" campaign; ie, Gardasil Facebook Fan Page: Take a step against cervical cancer, but I would hardly call that a "truly social" s...

Consultants were busy last week hoping to play their cards right as they filled in their forms to apply for more points. The great and the good were chasing bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards. Points and prizes? What are we talking about? This is what is generally known as "the merit award" system or, to give it its full pompous title, the "clinical excellence awards" as given out by the ACCEA, the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards. This is the corrupt, scandalous, old-school-tie, old-boy network method that is used to give favoured consultants a back-door pay rise.As Brucie would say, “points make prizes” and there are lots of Brucie bonus prizes available for consultants who do play their cards right. Being male, Anglo-Saxon and working in a main line special...

While reading various blogs in the past month or so as part of my duties as one of the many judges, I encountered so many blogs I didn't know existed, not so surprising I know! A few were utterly dire, clearly I won't link to these, but some of them I loved.Fist of all Daddy or Chips? which seems to be a magpie sort of blog picking up on fun, pretty and shiny things. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm missing layers of deeper meaning, some sort of rage against the system. It's got pop and well built men and more pop and I liked it a lot.Next I want to highlight Stranded on Gaia which somehow I'd not read before. It's a popular blog, frequently updated with funny as hell stories and rants and some top quality swearing. I'll be back.I discovered what might be the most beautiful blog of the lot...

I enjoyed myself so much this past weekend. Heading down to Cork for the weekend, staying in a decent hotel and meeting lots of fabulously interesting, opinionated, talented articulate and passionate people. I loved having some time with my beloved little sister and the banter and craic were mighty altogether. The Ladies Tea Party was delightful and the award ceremony was organised and enjoyable. Everyone I met was warm and friendly and all were impressed at how well Damian and all his helpers had managed everything. New friendships were made and old ones strengthened. It was delightful to return to my family. Gordon met me at the airport with the boys. Thomas blew kisses every time I looked around and smiled at me like a matinee idol, Duncan grinned and held my hand as we drove to pick Lad...

The Academy Awards might be just a couple of days away but they’ve already been trumped by the Hackademy Awards. Created by the anti-smoking group Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, the ‘Hackademy Awards’ outs movies that make smoking look glamorous with a ‘Thumbs Down’ award and movies that portray smoking as uncool with a ‘Thumbs Up’ award.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which had more than 100 incidents of cigarette smoking throughout the movie, won the Thumbs Down award, as did actor Robert Downey, Jr. (Tropic Thunder) and Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) for their smoking characters.
Thumbs Up awards went to the movie What Happens in Vegas which was apparently smoke free, as well as Will Smith (Hancock) and Nicole...

Shortlisted for Irish Blog Award

This is utterly smashing. The short list is out for Saturday's Irish Blog Awards and I'm still there in the specialist category. No too bad; about 50 or 60 blogs were nominated in this category, it being the one for all the blogs that don't really fit in anywhere else. This was whittled down to 20 or so in the long list and there are now only five finalists. I'm up with four exceptional blogs:Best Specialist Blog - Sponsored by iQ Content xbox4nappyrash.blogspot.combiopsy.wordpress.comirisheconomy.iethefamilyvoyage.blogspot.comirishtaxi.orgEach category has five finalists this year and those I've had a look at are excellent since each blog is judged by about 7 people on merit not popularity. Some of my own favourites didn't make it to the final stage though...boo hoo.The awards party takes...

I previously posted some thoughts on how I’d structure an EMR and HIPAA Awards competition. However, I wonder if I’m biased by the existing EMR Awards models. I’m thinking that maybe it’s unreasonable to offer an award for the entire EMR or EHR system. Instead, maybe we should just award certain features of an EMR or EHR system. Here’s some example of awards that could be given:

Best EMR Template/Charting Method
Best EMR Document Management System
Best EMR and PMS integration
Best EMR Prescribing Interface
Best EMR Internal Messaging/Task System
Best Out of the Box EMR
Most Configurable EMR (not too much, not too little)
etc.

Even these features would sometimes be difficult to compare. However, comparing specific functions seems like it might be mo...

TEPR Awards - Should EMR and HIPAA Create an Award?

The TEPR conference is going on right now in beautiful Palm Springs, CA. One of the highlights for people attending this conference is to find out which EHR, PHR or EMR wins the TEPR awards. You can see the full list of TEPR awards finalists on Healthcare IT News. The winners were also announced, but honestly it doesn’t even matter who won the awards. I don’t want to rehash why these awards don’t mean much. Although, I think the fact that only 700 people attended the conference says a lot.
Minus the vendors and the speakers who probably outnumbered the attendees and we have a conference (and therefore awards) that’s in real trouble. I’m sure the economy played its own part, but you sure have to wonder how long TEPR will be around after such poor at...

We had a stand-out winner this week: Normally when we host Grand Rounds, we don't play favorites...but this time we made an exception.
If you subscribe to the online or print versions of Dentaltown or Hygienetown, you’re familiar with the Townie Awards issue that premiered in December 2008. Hygienetown awarded ViziLite (by Zila Pharmaceuticals, AZ) in the Dental Hygiene/Oral Cancer Screening category. In addition, Zila’s ProSelect® Platinum Ultrasonic Scaler and Heated Irrigator was honored in the Periodontics/Power Scalers/Ultrasonic Piezo category. The awards are based solely on clinicians’ votes.

I wrote my first post on January 16, 2006. I'm surprised and proud to have stuck to this blogging game for so long when I was never a diarist or much of a writer. My aims for doing this have been to have a record of our lives and my children's development though I have tended to focus much more on Duncan recently and I rarely now write about our home-education pursuits, except for learning through living. I have changed my layout to display all my favourite blogs, not just those with a disability/autism/home-education/science theme. It's easier to keep up with new posts and hopefully, others reading here might sometimes have a look at something new.Blogging has been a great way to connect with people and learn from them.
Blogs tend to have a short life cycle, with most lasting under two years before fading into archival heaven. Last year Psych Central compiled a list of the top ten bipolar blogs, written by people who have a bipolar spectrum disorder. We’re glad that some of our faves are still active, sad to see a few gone, and pleased to discover great new writers too. We’re pleased to present you Psych Central’s Top Ten Bipolar Blogs of 2008.

I spent yesterday in New York City attending the 2008 Doctors' Choice Awards ceremony at the posh Palace Hotel (see my previous post about the awards: "Drug Ads from the Doctor's Perspective").The surrounding area looked like the Green Zone in Baghdad: concrete barricades, police in riot gear, black SUVs, and secret service agents all over the place.
While I often report on pharmaceutical print ads targeted to consumers (see, for example, "Print DTC: How Does It Measure Up?" [free]) I don't have direct access to print ads that doctors are subjected to (ie, professional print ads that appear in medical journals). But now -- thanks to the folks at the Association of Medical Media (AMM) -- I have a chance to view the drug ads that doctors like the best.Yes, dear reader, I'm off to yet another awards ceremony in New York -- The Doctors' Choice (TDC) awards ceremony at the Palace Hotel on September 24, 2008. If you are there (see the ad in the left hand column), be sure to say hello and perhaps meet me for a drink at the fancy-schmancy hotel bar. Thanks AMM for the invite, free lunch, and especially the preview of the ads that you sent me.Th...

A blogless, but otherwise highly intelligent person, emailed me this week to point out that not only was I muddling one week with another, but additionally, I was muddling one blog with several others. I plead guilty on both counts. However, it did prompt another stunningly brilliant idea! Why not give the award on each blog? Far less confusing, well for me at least. Hence this post is repeated on "alien" and "Sandwich" but with different awardees. {Don't want you to have to wade through this more than once, just skip to the end.}Another brilliant person "mit blog" castigated me [in the nicest possible way!] for my neglect of the "Hub," which once again I need to ‘fes up to,’ as we Americans are wont to say. I’m lucky if I mange to read through the first two or three postings in the ...

The Philippine Blog Awards, a project that started late 2006 and had its first awarding ceremony in 2007, was conceptualized to enable recognition of Filipino-owned blogs that generates quality content, reflective of the Filipino talent, in their respective niches.
And what better blog to choose to represent a growing Filipino blog community than a blog that gives you several glimpses on the minds of Filipinos? Of a blog that can bring to the table a sole topic for discussion and yet, present so many views, all willfully and reasonably argued? What better blog to choose than a blog that has utilized the power of words to further improve the dynamics of an ever-growing community of Filipino bloggers? And what about the not so occasional verbose skirmishes that only proves that the blo...

I’ve just been given this award by Chrysalis Angel. This is why she says I deserve it: For creativity, her site can not be beaten. She not only sutures for a living, but she sutures for fun. She makes some of the most beautiful, amazing quilts. I don’t know how she finds the time. She is also someone I call friend. I felt a connection with her immediately. She understands how I feel about babies with fur (dogs). You all will love her blog. She is also a huge amount of support for me right now, which I appreciate. Thank you CA! The rules are as follows: 1.You have to pick five blogs that you consider deserve this award in terms of creativity, design, interesting material, and general contributions to the blogger community, no matter what language. 2.
For the second straight year, we are honored that PsyBlog has named The Situationist the best social psychology blog in its updated Guide to Psychology blogs:

Best social psychology blog
The Situationist explores the importance of the situation in human behaviour and thought. It covers social psychology, social cognition, and related fields, but it is associated with Harvard Law School and therefore has a broad subject-area. It has both original writing and interesting excerpts from relevant pieces in the media.
PsyBlog is authored by Jeremy Dean, a barrister and a graduate student in psychology at University College London. We appreciate his kind words, and recommend reading about the other on-line publications honored.
We also appreciate you, our readers. When we launched The Situationi...

I have been remiss of late as real life has interfered with blogging. So now as I sit quietly, nay silently on the sofa with an ice-pack tied nappy style around my jaw, a bottle of germ killers, liquid centrum and a crate of Ensure, I thought I would catch up with a little bloggy housekeeping."Miss Nelson" over at "Meaningful Outcomes" was kind enough to give me this Banana with yummies award. Thank you "Miss Nelson!" As it turns out this banana award is turning into more of a boomerang, flying across the blogosphere with ferocious speed. As a result I feel the urgent need to pass it on again before it starts to rot as nobody likes a rotten banana, although ripe one's do go rather well in smoothies. I'll keep it brief as the Vicadom might wipe me out.It is therefore my pleasure to hand it ...

Have you -- like me -- been spending way too much time at your job? Are you ignoring some of the other pleasures life has to offer? This post is just a break from my routine to show off what I have been doing lately outside of my job -- watercolor!I've been taking a watercolor class every Wednesday night at a local community college since the fall and I have finally created something that I feel proud of (see image). I may even frame it and hang it!Yes, I'm a frustrated artist! Maybe many pharmaceutical marketers out there -- especially those working within creative ad agencies -- are also frustrated artists seeking to do something truly "creative."If you've been reading this blog, you know I've often criticized the "creative" behind DTC advertising and the awards given to ads for their cre...

Don't ask me what I'm a specialist in...I'm guessing it's something to do with the autism stuff. But anyway, I'm a winner.I'm just going to take a minute to gloat. That's better.SO last night, the Irish Blog Awards were held in a Dublin hotel. I went down from Belfast on the train with my cousin Miche. Though I really didn't expect to win, I was sure it'd be a good night out and a chance to meet a few cyber buddies. It was very well organised, and we were pleased to see that proceeds from the entrance charge went to an epilepsy charity. We took our seats feeling a bit out of place at first. It seemed that many other people there already knew one another. I wonde...

Gordon's awards ceremony took place last night. The place was packed, and it was only when we were there that I realised how prestigious it all was. Our < sarcasm> beloved leader < /sarcasm> the First Minister and the Health Minister were in the audience. Gordon was one of only 3 people nominated in his category and I think there were 8 categories. So he was in among the elite in a crowd of about 300. He didn't get the award, not that he was much fussed. But we enjoyed the night out, more so since we're tight and it was free. The awards part wasn't too painful, only those introducing the categories gave a speech and these were succinct and informative, well apart from the woman who droned on about pain and the other who blethered about the danger of BMIs higher than 29, to an audience wher...

For much of Saturday, we were all in the car traversing the country in a south westerly direction. It was a beautiful, crisp day and somehow, amazingly, everybody was on great form despite the long journey. The clan was gathering to attend my nephew's christening. We arrived at the church about 10 minutes late, but after having travelled for over 150 miles, much of it on windy, narrow roads, that wasn't too bad...for us.Duncan expressed his desire to go directly to my aunt P's house (she has a nice cuckoo clock and his favourite little dog) about 100 times as we drove. I'd told him that we would go there another day (she lives about 100 miles from our destination), or later, or soon, though he tried hard to pin me down to giving him a more accurate and desirable response. As I'd expected, h...

I was surprise (but pleased) when I was nominated in the Best New Medical Weblog (established in 2007) category. I'd like thank those that thought enough of my blog to nominate me. It's amazing to me that I made the cut of all the wonderful blogs out there to become a finalist. I'm honored. I feel like I've already won. Thank you. If you feel so inclined, head on over to Medgadget to record your vote. The other four (very worthy) blogs in this category are: Doctor David's Blog Dr. Val and The Voice of Reason The Happy Hospitalist The Physician Executive And I love this comment by Dr Paul Levy regarding this election: "Federal campaign laws apply to this contest. My heartfelt thanks to Ian at Failure is Key to Success for considering me worthy enough for the awards.
The first one is the ‘Be The Blog‘ award…

Ian, I do understand that it’s not a meme and I’m happy to say I found the space in my sidebar and the time to pass it on to some friends, who are - to me - inextricably linked to their blogs.

(Warning: Lengthy post ahead. Keep reading at your own risk!)
There are such events that are worth getting tired feet and strained back muscles for. And an event which has Fully Booked and Neil Gaiman in it is an example of such.
I’ve known about this event weeks ago because I frequent Fully Booked SM the Block but I wasn’t able to make up my mind about it until almost the last minute (okay, that’s an exaggeration. I must have weighed this on my mind until the day itself when I’ve finally made a decision). The indecisiveness must be because I’ve been so drained of energy these past few weeks by work and study and since it’s another Sunday of being not on duty (actually, the first of a series of Sundays of being not on duty), I thought of just spending it...

Autism Vox Gets Nominated

Autism Vox has been nominated for Best Medical/Health Issues Blog in the 2007 Weblog Awards, and is a finalist in that category.
I was rather stunned and much appreciative to learn this—–my students call me “Dr. Chew” but I’m no medical doctor, and Latin and ancient Greek, the subjects that I mostly teach, provide metaphorical medicine at best (one hopes). The other finalists include Kevin, M.D., Medical Weblog and Respectful Insolence. I’m trailing quite a bit behind the other finalists, but the main thing is to be included in such great company. And simply to be nominated.
You can vote until November 8th and once every 24 hours and thanks, and then some, for reading and letting me know what you think.

I think I found out what my recurring dream had been referring to lately, and that is my health. I had been putting off dealing with my medication refills due to an upcoming appointment since my insurance company makes me mailorder 3 months worth of prescriptions at a time. I didn't need that much, so I waited to see if my doctor was going to change it, so then I'd be able to fill it at my local pharmacy and I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of the mailorder process. But he wanted to refer me to another physician, so then I ran out of my medications before the referral appointment. Fortunately, my doctor agreed to write prescriptions for reduced dosages so that they would be different enough for the insurance company to pay for a local pharmacy prescription, which is fine since I ha...

DTC Perspectives, a pharmaceutical industry trade publication that focuses entirely on consumer marketing, announced the winners of its sixth annual Perspectives On Excellence Awards (POEs) last night at the Awards Dinner on October 24th.Unfortunately, I was unable to attend because of my watercolor class at Bucks County Community College. Here's my first watercolor painting:I had some trouble with the shadow, but otherwise I think it looks pretty good! Let's see Peter Rost or Ed Silverman do that!Anyway, back to the POEs. And the winners are:Most Innovative DTC CampaignGold Celebrex Silver Gardasil Bronze Rozerem Back in September, I predicted that Celebrex and Gardasil would win top honors, whereas respondents to my poll picked Rozerem and Gardasil/Tamiflu (see "POE: DTC Forevermore").I...

Intellectual Bloggers: My Choices

Some of you may have noticed that there is another award on my left sideboard, the Intellectual Blogger Award. Part of the requirements for receiving this award is that the award recipient (me, in this case) must choose five blogs that make her think. I decided that I would choose blogs that deserve more exposure to the public in my opinion, instead of choosing those blogs that have been noticed and awarded the Intellectual Blogger Award several times already. Interestingly, all of the blogs that fulfilled these criteria are written by women. So I am proud to list these blog writers as my five choices; Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post...
The 2007 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Part II

Very early tomorrow morning, some lucky biologist will receive a call that he’s won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. Just kidding—it will probably be a medical doctor or a physicist.
When Roger Kornberg won the Nobel last year for transcription crystallography, a stink erupted not over whether his work was worthy of recognition, but whether it was chemistry. But that’s old news. The big story this week is this year’s Nobel, and I know that the person who still reads this blog daily despite the fact that it’s never updated is interested in hearing revised odds for tomorrow’s winner.
I’m kind of torn about my final pick. On one hand, I’m thinking about adopting the same approach I used pre-2005 when I guessed that metathesis would win every year...

"Crystal" from "Crystal Jigsaw" was kind enough to bestow the 'Bodacious Blog Award' to me.I am ashamed to admit that my two volume Oxford English dictionary has no entry for this word. Fortunately in the modern world we can rely on "Wikipedia" which tells us that Bodacious can mean: * A full-figured female body shape, also known as a voluptuous or Rubenesque figure * Bodacious the Bull * In CB radio jargon, a general-purpose word of praise * A variety of iris (plant) * Extremely cool, most excellent, "that is bodacious!"I will leave you each to decide which definition is most appropriate for you and your blog. The Unsuspecting Soul of the Bodacious Blog Award Goes To..."Randy" from "Puddle of Nothing.""Cami" over at "CamiKaos," and "Mommified Me."And "Riseoutofme" over "here."I'll be ...

Lam & Lee's FluDr. Vincent Lam <http://www.vincentlam.ca/about.php> is an emergency medicine specialist in Toronto, Canada. When he's not writing award-winning fiction, like the short stories he put together for his collection Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures which won the 2007 Giller Award (see ceremony), this polymath is co-writing non-fiction consumer health titles, such as the The Flu Pandemic and You: A Canadian Guide. The American Medical Writer's Association (AMWA) recently gave Lam and Lee a special mention for their book at its recent annual conference.
The Flu Pandemic is a worthy addition to your office library.

"Dgibbs" from "Myfavouriteautistic" has bestowed upon me the Schmooze Award. Thank you Dgibbs, I am quite honored, if a little unworthy lately, due to a series of laundry crises.“Good schmoozers effortlessly weave their way in and out of the blogosphere, leaving friendly trails and smiles, happily making new friends along the way. They don’t limit their visits to only the rich and successful, but spend some time to say hello to new blogs as well. They are the ones who engage others in meaningful conversations, refusing to let it end at a mere hello - all the while fostering a sense of closeness and friendship.”So now it's my turn to pass this little one along. This one's for "Jeni" at "Down River Drivel" because she shares many of the same intergenerational problems.....er .....issues...

tags: Bipolar disorder, manic-depressive illness, mental health, blog awards

Wow, my blog was given another award! This time, Living the Scientific Life was recognized by Psych Central as being one of the top ten blogs to go to to read about bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. The top ten list for bipolar disorder was compiled with input from readers, one of their associate editors, Sandra, and by John Grohol, PsyD. According to John, "[This award] reflects the excellence in regular writing of entries related to this mental health concern that we feel is consistent and worthy of people's time."

As my long-time readers know, I have battled this disorder for most of my life (and mostly in secret). Even though a quick glance through my blog will show you that I do not ...
