A Facelift And New Home For Healthbolt.

I knew changes were coming but still, it was a shock when I clicked onto Healthbolt today and discovered that all the red had gone.
It was like the blood had been drained out of it.
In fact, I had to look twice to make sure I was at the right blog.
I wonder if everyone feels like that when they have a facelift?
But like any good facelift, what’s underneath stays the same.
Healthbolt is still going to supply the interesting, the intriguing, the entertaining, the bizarre, and sometimes down right gross in the world of health and wellness.
So what do you think about Healthbolt’s new look, and more importantly, Healthbolt’s new digs at BlissTree?
Personally, I think you’re going to love it. The BlissTree portal from b5Media has everything about health at your fingertips...

I’m digressing a post today to get word out out about a tragedy that hit one of our b5media blogger, and how you can help.
Fellow b5media blogger Cheryl Vernon lost her house to a fire last week. The entire family is unhurt, but everything they have has been lost, including their two dogs and a cat. Her house is uninsured so they need help getting back on their feet.
So we’re reaching out to you in the blogging community. b5media has a donation page for Cheryl’s cause, please consider giving in any way you can. CEO Jeremy Wright (twitter) even offered consulting time to people who can give $100 or more. If you want to give physical donations, please contact Angie Alvarado at The Palestine Herald at 903-729-0281.
Cheryl and all of us at b5media extend our thanks to you. Cheryl writ...

Periodically b5 bloggers post their favorite posts of the week. I write three blogs at b5media, Alzheimer’s Notes, Quilting and Patchwork, and One Book Two Book. (The latter I co-blog with Marcie Pickelsimer.)
Sometimes it’s difficult to choose your very favorite for the week. However, here are the three for this week:

Did Thanksgiving and now full speed ahead into December with all of its festivities, plus a few extras. Today is “Black Friday” here in the US, formerly known as “the day after Thanksgiving when people line up at 5am to charge the stores to get super-special-deal-discounts on holiday purchases”—as you probably guessed, we didn’t hit any malls with Charlie in tow. He has a general aversion to shopping for clothes, electronics, and anything in the closed confines of the modern mall. Once upon a time, we went to malls with pretty much the sole intent of walking around for exercise on a cold winter day, with the promise of escalator and elevator rides. Charlie’s interest—desire—to ride the likes of those has waned (and, too, some rather pai...

AlzheimersNotes.com
In the post, For Alzheimer’s Caregivers Considering an At-Home or eBay Income, I mention Suzanne Wells and her new blog at b5media, eShopOwner.com.
Suzanne has offered some additional insights for Alzheimer’s Notes’ readers:
eBay is becoming more and more popular for the “sandwich” generation who are looking for additional means to bring extra income into the home, whether to save for retirement or to care for a parent or spouse.
eBay works great for caregivers or the homebound because sellers can interact with their customers and this helps with the isolation factor, and it gives the caregiver another focus, a hobby, and something fun to do to combat “caregiver’s syndrome.”
Whether the caregiver develops an e-busine...

Your Alzheimer’s parent or spouse requires more and more care, so you find it difficult to juggle caregiving and your job. Or you simply need extra income to pay the additional bills caregiving entails.
If you’re considering online or eBay businesses, check out the helpful information at the new blog at b5media’s Business Channel, eShopOwner.com, by Suzanne Wells.
Suzanne has a number of posts concerning the in’s and out’s about setting up an eBay store. She does this in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) format.
For instance, in FAQ#1, Suzanne discusses, What Should I Sell?, and differentiates between the hobby and serious eBay business owner. She also touches upon her experience as an eBay business owner.
Keep tuned to eShopOwner...

The Great Blog Off at b5media celebrates the June 20th summer solstice. Most participating blogs from the Lifestyles, Business, and Entertainment channels will post content once per hour for each hour of the day.
However, some like Quilting and Patchwork , will be posting periodically. At Home Biz Notes, another of my b5media blogs, we’ll be posting more frequently.
Eliza at Babylune summarizes what’s going on in the Lifestyles Channel.
Kelly Erb, CE at the Business Channel provides a roundup of the entire Great Blog Off picture, b5media Bloggers Hit the Keys for Charity.

Keeping with this months theme day here at the Health and Wellness channel- ‘School is out for the summer’… which means summer camps.
Thanks to many of camps around the world- kids that have disabilities or special needs including congenital heart defects and severe heart disease can take place in the summer fun all the same.
I found and incredible resource while searching for camps in my area. The camps are listed by State and Region. Many are offered for children with heart disease- wonderful indeed!
If you have had any experience with any of the camps listed please let me know how it went and if you would recommend it to another parent. It is always nice to hear feedback.

School is out and that means higher volume at home, more kids running around the house, pool water everywhere and snacks galore! This month’s theme day is Schools Out and today is the day it happens here at the Health and Wellness Channel.
I have a few healthy diabetic snack tips for keeping straight this summer. Instead of grabbing a cookie from the cookie jar or munching on a bag of Doritos why not have healthy and sugar free snacks waiting in the wings…
5 Ready to go diabetic friendly snacks:
1. Pre-cut celery and carrots and place them in a big Ziploc bag- you can open the fridge and grab a handful. They are crunchy and will fill your belly.
2. Popcorn- whether you throw it in the microwave or make it in an air popper… it will take less then 5 minutes and you can pop ...

Yesterday, June 16 is the official start of classes in most schools here in the Philippines (where I am!). So yesterday was my 5-year-old son’s first day at prep.
However in the United States (Europe and Canada too?) June is when school’s out. It doesn’t matter where I am in the world, here at b5media’s Health and Wellness Channel, we celebrate the school’s out month in this month’s Channel Theme Day.
The fabulous bloggers of Health and Wellness Channel has a lot of great things to say, I’m telling you!

Who doesn’t look forward to school breaks? Both children and parents are so looking forward for the school year to end. I am a parent to a 5-year old who started going to pre-school and some day care of sorts since he was 2-and-a-half. Though not continuously: the first year we lasted only a month, the 2nd year 4 months, the 3rd year he finally finished the whole school year (yeeha!).
Now is the 4th year my son is attending school. He’s in prep now and is raring to go always. Today was his first day at school. We are in the Philippines and so June is actually the start of the school year — after 2 months of our own version of summer break (April and May).
So yeah…who doesn’t look forward to school breaks? We all do. And what does school breaks got to do with c...

Celebrities and their families have been “going public” during the last few years when Alzheimer’s strikes them. This illness is no longer hidden, the person sequestered where no one sees them, and families refrain from talking about it.
This week, as we pursue the theme of Celebrities & Health at the b5media Health & Wellness channel, we’ll be mentioning various celebrities and sharing how they and their families faced this disease and inspired and encouraged others.
I’m pleased that celebrities’ families like those of Ronald Reagan, Charlton Heston, Rita Hayward, Arlene Francis, and others have come forth. Not that we should pry into their lives and make every nuance public, but the knowledge that they aren’t a...

My love of children’s and young adult books has flowed over to One Book Two Book, a blog for book lovers and readers at here at b5media. As a children’s author, I find writing this blog with Karen Weideman very fulfilling. At One Book Two Book, I can share my love of reading and writing and hopefully inspire youngsters and adults to enjoy the same. I also share my stories with youngsters in schools through substitute teaching and author visits, as well as writing workshops.
Here at Alzheimer’s Notes, I’ve mentioned children’s books involving Alzheimer’s as the story theme and hope you’ve found them helpful if you had a chance to read them. With the warmer weather leading us into summer (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers will be outside more. That generally means more exposure to the sun and the need for sunblock.
Scott Warthon, at b5’s Health and Men, has some great information about Understanding Sun Protection Factor or SPF . This helps us understand why and how the different levels of SPF work as they do. He also has posted a chart giving us information regarding which SPF to use with which skin type.
(Scott learned the hard way…he got a sunburn! See This is Why You Should Wear Sunblock)

Today is theme day here at the Health & Wellness Channel. And what a better way to celebrate our channel’s name change than a round-up post from our mega-talented group of bloggers?
This month’s theme, while not exactly chipper, is vitally important. All the posts listed in today’s Theme Day Round-Up are focused on cancer: What causes it, new methods of diagnosing it, how to live with it, etc. The information is thorough, fantastic and very insightful. Do give it a look.
A special thanks to Marijke at the phenomenal Help My Hurt . She was the lucky blogger in charge of corralling all of our Cancer-themed posts for this month. Great job, Marijke, and great job to everyone all across the b5media Health & Wellness Channel.

Reminiscing and memories play a large role in the life of Alzheimer’s patients. Going along with living in a previous decade or era enables caregivers to keep the patient less agitated and happier.
At the b5media Lifestyles Channel, where I write the Quilting and Patchwork blog, we reminisced about the 1980’s for our Theme Day this month, b5media Lifestyles Lovin’ the 80’s.
My mom, who later developed Alzheimer’s, was operating a country general store during the early 80’s. She had encouraged me to begin quilting again (I’d done some with my grandmother when I was a child) and provide her with quilts for her customers during the Bicentennial years of 1975-76. I continued to do this as long as she owned her store in the m...

Since the traditional St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, falls on Holy Week this year, some are celebrating today, March 15. Whichever day you’re planning to recognize this day, if you do in your family, enjoy!

February 2008: This has been the greatest month ever!!

The greatest month ever, at least in the last two years since I have been blogging full-time.
Here in this blog alone, I was off to a slow start because I got back from a real vacation on 4th Feb. You know what happens after a vacation even how short. You end coming back on the job but wishing you can extend the break for one more week.
Then there was Valentine’s Day and the Theme Day. Not to mention that February is also the other official heart month: American Heart Month.
And who can forget the frustrating downtimes here and network-wide?!
All those, on top of some wonderful, amazing stuff that has been happening in my life all the once right now. This is a month or many firsts! Generally good, putting me in the right cheerful, chirpy mode. The only problem is that, it put my time...

A “Thank You” to Alzheimer’s Notes Readers

AlzheimersNotes.com
A big THANK YOU to all our readers for being patient and sticking with us during the technical difficulties we’ve encountered at b5media the past couple of weeks. The Internet and blogosphere, like amost anything you’re involved with, can be affected by situations beyond one’s control.
For instance, where I live in New Hampshire (USA), we’ve encountered blizzards and ice storms more frequently this winter than in recent years. So businesses here have experienced electricity outages, customers who stayed home, late deliveries…even collapsing roofs. With school closings due to storms, the substitute teaching work I do has been curtailed.
However, here at Alzheimer’s Notes, Liz Lewis and I’ve continued to write posts for you ...

AlzheimersNotes.com

I hope you all have a nice Presidents’ Day holiday. How are you celebrating? Have you done something special with your Alzheimer’s patient? A different menu, or one traditional with your family?
My mom always made a white cake with white frosting. then she decorated it with maraschino cherries. (George chopping down the cherry tree!) We usually had canned cherries (from my grandparents trees) and ate those with cake for dessert.
We’re digging out from an ice storm where I live. So the grandchildren have had the day off from school and I didn’t get called to substitute teach.
To celebrate Presidents’ Day, enjoy a round-up of posts from several of the blogs at b5media. Here are two from the Lifestyles Channel.

In lieu of February being the American Heart Month, I would like to contribute this post (not cancer related!) in the b5media Science and Health Channel Theme Day.
The month of February has Valentine’s Day too right (that’s today!) and the American Heart Month reminds the American public that cardiovascular diseases (including stroke) are the nation’s No. 1 killer.
Makes you wonder how so. But it just makes sense, since the modern word and living on the fast lane bit is truly bad for the heart. We tend to eat the wrong foods, have bad eating habits and have sedentary lifestyles — not only in our homes but our offices too. We tend to be always on a hurry, even when eating.
Most of us eat on the go. Even eating in front of your computer (like I often do!) is I guess w...

Here at b5media Science and Health Channel, it is not just the red heart month, but also a month of contests. I am a sucker for freebies. And since I have been blogging, I have won quite a few stuff from contests in the blogs I often visit.
So. Speaking of contests, check out the following from this channel of wonderful science and health bloggers:

Alicia of Mental Health Notes: Love: It’s All In My Head Valentine’s Day Contest

Well, at b5media we have downtimes as well — like any other company or network.

Valentine’s Day provides an opportunity for families to have fun, even with the Alzheimer’s patient members. Whether festivities take place at their home, yours, or a nursing home, you all can participate, even if it’s just in a limited way.
Also, families often are simply looking for Valentine’s Day ideas for fun activities. This always was an enjoyable time in my family when I was growing up, and I’ve tried to continue the traditions with daughter and grandchildren. We would visit Mother in the nursing home on Valentine’s Day when she resided there.
The b5media Lifestyles Channel gathered their ideas for cards, recipes, gifts, and activities to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Visit Hearts and Flowers, Hugs and Kisses a...

I have the 411 on 2 new contests being offered by fellow science and health bloggers (I can tell I am getting old because I thought that ‘411′ was a clever way of saying information).
On Astronomy Buff, Tony is offering up this contest…
So here’s the contest, I want you guys to submit a post of around 500 words that describe something about astronomy. Now don’t get scared, you don’t have to know anything about astronomy to enter. I’m looking for well-written prose about astronomy that I can post, nothing else. There are no other rules than that.
His prize is an iOptron mount. Go get to it!
Our second contest to mention is Ali at Daily Tomorrow. She is giving away a copy of Naturally Clean: The Seventh Generation Guide to Safe & Healthy, Non-toxic Cleaning.

The story I wrote for Home Biz Notes, My Mother, The Country Grocer, won this round of the b5 Business Channel’s “Apprentice” type challenge. This week we were to tell the prototype business owner, Kay, a success story.
(I referenced here about it in the Alzheimer’s Notes post, A Life Before Alzheimer’s - Mother, The Country Grocer.)
I chose to relate the story of my mom, who influenced many people throughout her years as a country grocer, and hoped this would inspire Kay and others. As I wrote about Mother, I realized (as I said in one of my comments at the Home Biz Notes post):
I think we all can find inspiring stories within our families. I hope, with this story, I encourage others to look at their lives and the people they know. Someone, somewhere h...

I often mention my mom in my writing here at Alzheimer’s Notes and have told her Alzheimer’s journey in my book, When We Become the Parent to Our Parents. However, some of you might like a glimpse of Mother in her life before Alzheimer’s.
At the b5 Business Channel and Home Biz Notes, where I’m a co-blogger with Yvonne Russell, we’re involved in an 8-week “apprentice” type competition. This week we were asked to give the prototype business owner inspiration by relating a success story. I decided to tell about My Mother, the Country Grocer…Success Isn’t Always What You Think. I hope you find inspiration in Mother’s story, too.
It was after Mother became ill with Alzheimer’s and I moved her to my home in another state ...

Kay’s problem for week #4 involves her business expanding too rapidly for her to fill her Christmas orders. (Kay has started a business producing chef’s aprons and hats for children.)
What’s she to do to solve this challenge, which actually is a good one to have?

We are doing a new type of theme day here at the science and health channel. We are compiling a top 10 list channel wide. That’s right, each and every one of us has created our own take on the top 10 list. And this is my take on it. I was thinking of listing clinical implications of diabetes. No, that is too boring! Then I thought, “why don’t I share what I have learned about living with diabetes over the last few years- the good, bad and the ugly, and sometimes very humorous”.
So, here we go. I am going to share with you the top 10 things that I have learned about living with diabetes. Now remember, this is MY personal list. So you can laugh, smile or get all fired up at what I have to say. And if you would like, send me your top 10 list of what you have learned li...

The science and health channel here at b5media has launched some new blogs over the last few weeks. We have an eating disorder called Breaking the Mirror. We have a new fertility site called Fertility Notes and a great new pediatric blog, Kids Health Notes.
Grace at Kids Health Notes is a veteran b5′er and has some great things to offer. One of her posts last week was right up our alley here at A Hearty Life. She reminded us that chest pains among children and teens should be taken seriously and worked up just as carefully as an adult would be.
Go check out her post and see what else she has to say. Have a great weekend all!

Carol O’Dell visits us today at Alzheimer’s Notes to share her thoughts concerning Mothering Mother, a humorous and heartbreaking memoir about caring for her mother who developed Parkinson’s disease and a heart condition. Carol faced situations many of us have in caring for a family member afflicted with Alzheimer’s. The world of caregiving has many commonalities and brings us together to share, to cry, to laugh…and then realize, “It’s okay. Someone else felt like this, too. I’m not alone.”
(If you’d like to read an excerpt from Mothering Mother, visit her web site. )

Do you need something light and fun and cheerful for your day? It doesn’t have anything to do with Alzheimer’s, except that it might brighten your day. Sometimes we need something simply to give us an uplift and inspiration.
When I read Jennifer’s post, 32 Little Green Babies, at Tree Hugging Family, a new b5media blog, I thought I simply must share it. Then I shared, in the comments section, about my family rescuing baby ducklings.
Pets and animals and birds became important in my mom’s life as Alzheimer’s progressed. She watched birds at our winter feeder. She was so attached to her cat that we moved it to our home when we moved her, even though my husband said he didn’t want to be bothered by a cat.
The National Genographic Project is one of the most fascinating genetics studies currently being conducted. I’ve written extensively about the project and the controversies surrounding it and was excited to find this entertaining video featuring some of the people who have participated.

The genome revolution is set to influence the entire world. Learn more about other global issues at b5media’s Science and Health Theme Day hosted by Jul at Veggie Chic.
