I love what you have been sharing on our Facebook page recently. Reading about the things you love about your uniqueness has been very inspiring. (If you missed it, catch up here.)
Some days it’s hard to love ourselves-the quirky things we say, our crooked smile, or how we need to be around people as much as we need to get away from them. The funny thing is that what makes us different is often what makes us so lovable. Simply because there is no single person on this earth like you. When you think about it, isn’t that pretty cool?
In the world we live in, it is sometimes hard to love our unusual parts, the things that make us stand out from the crowd. But your uniqueness (the way you write, speak, walk and how you just are) is really a fingerprint, a distinct and permanent imp...

I just realized it has been exactly a year and a day since I last blogged and I don’t know if anyone is still reading this.
There are a lot of reasons for that, although mostly I blame Facebook and its instant gratification abilities (which only slightly make up for the letdown when you say something clever and NO ONE RESPONDS no matter how many times you hit refresh).
So what’s new?
P’ito turned FOUR in November. He is a firecracker – intensely loving and excited one moment, absolutely enraged at the injustice of life the next (no mac and cheese? BUT I WANT MAC AND CHEESE!)
We’re still waiting for Hypothetical Sibling. We had one close call, where a birthmother chose us, but then the father decided to sue for custody rather than let her make an adoption ...

No, we’re not condoning drinking sodas like Pepsi, or, for that matter, investing your life savings with the help of a Ponzi scheme orchestrator (like Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick did with Bernie Madoff – oops!), but it’s not a bad idea to investigate SixDegrees.org, Kevin Bacon’s legit nonprofit charity networking site – to which Pepsi recently gave a $250,000 grant that you can help spend – for good. Check out Kevin’s video that explains it all:

Remember Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, that global phenomenon that started and spread around the world in 1997 – way before Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Foursquare? Well, a few years ago, Bacon decided to capitalize on his Six Degrees mega-popularity and found SixDegrees.org, a social networking site that’s all about finding charitable nonprofits (more than one million of them), promoting the ones you already care about, and donating to help support them. (You can even find out which causes are near-and-dear to celebrities’ hearts. Woot.) Oh, and Kevin’s wife, Kyra, just won an Emmy. Congrats.

All it takes to assure you’ll keep your local cardiologist employed is 19 strips of bacon and an egg and you’ve got yourself one heck of a solid bacon burger:
Having read about the difficulties people making such burgers have had keeping them together, I decided to add one large egg to the food processor along with the 19 slices of bacon. I ground the bacon and the egg together, then, using my hands, pulled the mixture out and used a hamburger press to make a burger. It is possible that my hands have been greasier at some point in my life, but if so I have (fortunately) forgotten it. I was not quite prepared for the raw burger to look like pure fat, and I must admit that it didn’t look very appealing. But it was for science, so I soldiered on!
I put the burger on the rack-Pyr...

Last night for dinner, we decided to go out to eat. My brother, Dylan, suggested that we try out the new Michael Symon restaurant that opened up near our house. Luckily we have a baby who likes to eat early so we decided to go at 5:00 pm. We managed to get a table and were very excited to see Michael Symon himself cooking our food in the kitchen.B Spot is a place for burgers, beer and brats. They don't have the most diabetes friendly menu, but you can certainly get a tasty salad, or burger on a salad. I got a Sierra Nevada pale ale and the Thin Lizzy burger and we shared the Lola fries and onion rings. All I can say is wow. Every bite that we had was delicious. Rightfully so... the food is cooked in lard which makes it so damn good. Dyl...

The New Orleans-based Fifth Circuit, the federal court of appeals where I once clerked, has allowed a class action lawsuit by Hurricane Katrina victims to proceed against a motley crew of energy, oil, and chemical companies. Their claim: that the defendants’ greenhouse gas emissions raised air and water temperatures on the Gulf Coast, contributing to Katrina’s strength and causing property damage. Mass tort litigation specialist Russell Jackson calls the plaintiffs’ claims “the litigator’s equivalent to the game ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.’”

Bacon used to be a tricky thing for me to cook. My kitchen would always get smoky and grease spattered, and my bacon would always end up either burnt or not done enough. Never just right. It wasn't until a couple months ago when I read on the back of the package directions for broiling it. Broiling bacon seemed easy enough. And it was. The result is crispy, perfectly done bacon that leaves your kitchen grease-spatter-free and there's zero smoke. I like my bacon a little on the well-done side, but you can cook it as little or as much as you like. It comes out perfectly every time I've made it! All you do is place it on a cookie sheet and pop it underneath your broiler. Turn it halfway through cooking (about 3-4 minutes) and take it...

My ageing Greek friend advises me that doctors in the USA are asking patients to sign gagging orders, preventing them from using the various "rate your doctor" websites that are proliferating over there. We have the dreadful Neil Bacon to thank for these sites in this country and, much as I detest the man, may I once again stress that he has never to my knowledge had a relationship with a motor vehicle, and I do wish people would stop clicking on that dreadful composite photograph on Google images. How would you feel if you put your name into Google images and something like that came up at the top?I hate these sites but I would never attempt to gag a patient. If they want to complain about a named doctor, they should do so. But through the normal channels, not on a scurrilous website unde...

But there are so many things in my head, and so many of them are unbloggable. I work at a small non-profit, and we are just barely surviving this economy and may very well not make it. Which would be stressful enough without the partner of one of my colleagues suddenly learning (as in four days later he was having brain surgery) that he has stage 4 glioblastoma. Which means that she is barely present at work and when she is, she isn’t. Her family is her first priority, I truly believe that, but at the same time, it puts even more pressure on the rest of us.
So the past two months I’ve been dealing with this, and trying to fight off the demons in my head that threaten to suffocate me in anxiety and depression that paralyzes me and makes the smalle...

Carbonara sauce is another example the simple and uncomplicated approach to food that epitomizes Italian cooking. There is very little on earth that is more sinfully rich than a good Carbonara: eggs, cream, butter, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and pancetta, all in one smooth, creamy concoction over pasta. And if you thought you could burn those calories by slaving away to make the sauce, then you have my apologies- this is not... (Source: Diabetes Daily)

Eating red meat increases your chances of dying prematurely. That’s the stark finding of a very large and very well done clinical study just published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study found that eating red and processed meat was associated with increases in total mortality, cancer mortality, and cardiovascular disease mortality. They found that eating just 4 ounces of red meat a day raises your overall risk of dying prematurely, raises your risk of dying from cancer and raises your risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. I’d say that means it’s time to decrease your consumption of red meat, which includes beef, pork and processed meats like sausage, bacon and cold cuts.
There are a number of reasons why eating red meat might be bad for your health. Red...

Neil Bacon, just back from his skiing holiday it seems, hires a hospital room to promote his website. There is no evidence that Bacon is currently working as a doctor. He likes to style himself as some sort of kidney specialist, but he did not finish the training. He was involved in setting up DNUK but then left that organisation in circumstances which remain unclear. Since then he has been trying to make a living with his new internet venture. It is entirely characteristic of his hypocrisy and duplicity that this promo video is on YouTube with comments disabled. Please feel free to make comments about it here.Bacon was on Radio 4 at lunchtime today, (soon to be available here) He was once again trying to flog his cynical, disreputable website. Oddly, Hamish Meldrum was cosying up to him, ...

Rita has not taken a summer break. Armed with the Freedom of Information Act she has been extracting information from the GMC about their relationship with Bacon and in particular has accessed and published some fascinating correspondence and emails. Full details hereUncharacteristically for Rita, she has made one factual error, an error she will I know be only to happy to put right. She has referred to him as a “nephrologist”.
Dr Julia Webster is one of the senior partners at the Sleaford Medical Group. She and I overlapped at medical school, though I don’t recognise her name. Julia has just been “named and shamed” by Baconshit. It seems that she was a bit “short” with a patient who wanted to be treated by a homeopathist, or some such wibble merchant. For that “offence” she is castigated on “I want great care” Has she been consulted in advance before this defamatory material was published? I think not. Has she been given the chance to put her side of the story? I think not. One patient was upset because Julia was not prepared to discuss medical wibble, ergo Julia is not a very good doctor. What about the other 2000 patients she sees?click to enlargeOn that basis, Ben Goldacre is the worst docto...

Dr Neil Bacon : a disgrace to the medical profession

Dr Neil Bacon should be ashamed of himself. Earlier today I wrote at length, with some circumlocutions, about Bacon. It is no longer necessary to mince words. The site he has set up is a disgrace. If Bacon is making money out of it, he deserves to be driven out of the medical profession. Take a look at how, in the course of one short day, he has attempted to destroy the professional reputation of a doctor, without explanation, and without giving that doctor the right to respond. This is what I said earlier:Look at what is already happening on the site, with this utterly disgraceful ad hominen attack on a doctor who is not able to defend himself. There are always two sides to a story, never more so than when there is a psychiatric problem. This poor doctor cannot defend himself without break...

RaptorsI have always been uneasy about Doctors.net.uk. I do not visit it often and I rarely read the forums. NHS BLOG DOCTOR articles are sometimes mentioned in the chat rooms and whilst, like any blogger, I am grateful for the increased traffic, I don't usually follow up any comments. It’s a bit ostrich-like, I know. And it means that sometimes I miss the start of important medical stories. There is nothing like a good bitch over a good pint about matters medical and that is what goes on in the Doctors.net.uk forums. Trouble is, the forums are not as private as members think. I know a lot of medical journalists and, believe me, it is not difficult to get into Doctors.net.uk despite the apparent professional security.Bitching over a pint is one thing. But some of the serious issues that c...

Most of the boxes are unpacked. And glory glory hallelujah, we finally have both internet and a landline.
Both Pepito and his mommies have been enjoying the new house.

Looking out at his new backyard.

Proudly walking (not independently, thank g-d) amidst the boxes.

Peering through the “chubby kat” cat door.

The house has a semi-finished basement room, which we call the playroom. Here’s the “adult” side. I got this on Saturday at a yard sale for $60 - delivered.

And while the mommies play pool, the boy can play with his toys… A lot of these were left for us by the previous owner.
My friend MC is right: move is a four letter word. Go give her some lurve, she has been through hell lately. I hate it when things don’t work out for my friends.

I don’t think I’ve ever gone this long without posting before. Life has been… interesting. And not in a very good way.
For some reason I feel very embarrassed and ashamed about what I’m about to write about. Things with the job in MUCDTR are not going so smoothly - it turns out that they have not been able to raise the money they need in order for me to start working there. They’re still trying their damndest and it’s possible that any day now the funding will come through. But for the moment, I wait. And fret. And stress.
In the meantime: I have given notice at my current job (although nothing has been done to replace me, and they would probably be very happy if I were to say I could stay longer) ; I just spent a lot of time at a professional conferen...

I got a letter in the mail today officially offering me the position in more-urban-city-down-the-road (MUCDTR) that has been in the works since november.
I am thrilled. I am panicking, big time.
Homes in MUCDTR are twice as expensive as our house here. There is actually more than one neighborhood where we’d consider living. We need to find a home. Very very soon. Mortgage. House selling. House buying. Movers. Aaaaaaaaaack. [sandbox, head, insert, deeply]
We will be moving. I will be starting a new job. And possibly hopefully bringing home our boy. All right around the same time, if g-d and pgn* cooperate. Aaaaaaaack. [deep breath of sand]
Pili will be commuting a loooong way to her job and staying over a few nights a week while school is in session....

(Yes, we really have friends whose initials are T&A. No, they don’t really think it’s as funny as I do.) This was originally supposed to be posted on the day of the big snow, but Pili’s camera cable was eaten by a puppy in India.

This is what I was doing while Pili was cooking up a Valentines Day feast.
Still think you know who’s butch in our relationship, ladies?
And to my friend Chicagomama. You can have your g-ddamn Weggies. I just want my innocence back. In other words, I want to return to a life where the words “roof rake” have no personal significance to me. This is about the time of year when I forget how much the other people on our condo board annoyed me and all I remember is that when we lived there I did not have to shovel sixteen tons of...
