By Sallie JamesA bill that would have set a troubling precedent indeed was killed in the Senate last week. I've written previously about the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, and its fate has been tied up with the Generalized System of Preferences, a scheme by which certain developing countries gain duty-free access to the U.S. market for many of their goods. Congress was trying -- and failed -- to pass an extension of the programs together, along with the Andean Trade Preference Act.
Well, in an effort to extend for eighteen months the stimulus-enhanced TAA program (they were less fulsome in their enthusiasm for the other part of the bill; the barrier-reducing ATPA), Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced what they deemed to be a legislative "fix" to the thorny...

A few weeks ago I posted about a voyager bag I made using black linen. It was made using the Voyager Bag (#761) pattern from Ghee’s. Yesterday I pulled out some Alexander Henry fabric featuring horses (a light weight denim) that I’ve had for over 15 years. I was going to make a jacket, but, well, it never happened. This one, like the black linen one, is lined and measures 8 in X 9 in when folded over. There are a total of 4 zippered compartments and two other pockets. Here is the inside. Here is the back. I plan on giving it to a friend for his wife who loves horses. (Source: Suture for a Living)

Jeff McKay: Cavalier About Violating Metro Riders’ Liberties, Spending Taxpayer Dollars

By Jim HarperIn a blog post of righteousness last week, I assailed Fairfax County (Virginia) Supervisor Jeff McKay for his failure to comprehend basic security principles as they pertain to the Metro system.
A Washington Examiner reporter retrieved McKay’s response:
[H]e laughed. But he quickly defended his stance, saying that random searches were recommended by the U.S. Transportation Security Association, the D.C. Police, and WMATA management.
“I trust the intelligence agencies when they tell me there’s a reason to do this,” he said.
McKay admitted that bag searches likely wouldn’t stop someone intent on causing mass destruction to the Metrorail, but that they will make passengers much more aware of security concerns.
Supervisor McKay was not flip about thes...

By Jim HarperThis afternoon I briefly attended a meeting of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority board to comment on the question whether there should be random bag searches in the D.C. area’s subway system. A variety of other liberty loving D.C.-area residents spoke up against bag searches, noting the weakness of the practice in terms of security, the privacy consequences, and the insult to Metro riders in treating all as suspects. The chairman of the Riders Advisory Council asked that the program be suspended.
Along with restating the security weakness of random bag searches—it simply transfers risk from one station to another, from the subway to busses, or from the Metro system to other infrastructure—I emphasized the strategic consequences of the policy:...

Last fall I bought a new bag pattern from Ghee’s, the Voyager Bag (#761). I made the medium using some black linen in my stash. As it was a light-weight linen, I underlined it to make it more durable. I, also, fully lined the bag sections so there are no raw seams anywhere. The finished bag, folded over, measures 8 in X 9 in. There are a total of 8 compartments/pockets. I had a beautiful piece of 3 in wide trim that I wrapped around 1.5 in cotton strapping to make the bag’s strap. Here is the back. Not the pocket which could hold tickets when traveling. Here is the inside. Here you can see the antique buttons I used for the closure. I found these years ago at an estate sale. (Source: Suture for a Living)

The bag is fully lined with pockets (6 in wide X 5.25 deep). The pattern directions called for using plastic canvas to make supporting structure for the bag. I used Pellon Peltex 70 instead. I covered each Peltex piece with brown fabric so the white wouldn’t be an issue showing through the linen knit pattern. Here you can see the band strip.
Conclusions

I’ve had a couple of naps in the chair since writing down my initial impressions, and I still like it. Maybe the one drawback in this regard is that micro-suede tends to vary in its reflectiveness depending on the direction you brush it. If you like your furniture to look pristine all the time, that might bug you. I imagine the corduroy version wouldn’t have this “problem”, though I haven’t seen a sample.

Note that this is a larger piece of furniture than you might think…it’s not like the underwhelming bean bag chairs of the 70s and 80s. You should plan the placement of this chair accordingly, allowing for more space to the sides and front. The seating position is also lower than most traditional furniture, so that’s something...

A study at the University of Arizona tested 84 reusable bags, and found that half of them were contaminated with bacteria. Researchers recommend washing your bags, especially if you use them to transport raw meat. Yes…insightful advice that we’d hope most of our readers don’t need. Maybe the researchers should have added, “If a raw egg cracks in your reusable bag, wash it.”
It’s hard to imagine an adult that wouldn’t get this. Let’s just peg the 42 bacteria laden-bags on well-meaning but clueless University of Arizona freshman.

You can read this week’s edition here. I want to start this week's Grand Rounds' blog with my own blog post. I asked for postings on customer service and I have one to share. My 17-year-old son has been having some issues with depression and social anxiety. We got him in to see a therapist and his family practitioner prescribed a low dose of Prozac, both of which seemed to be helping until he hit a crisis when his girlfriend broke up with him. He literally fell apart and scared us to death. His therapist called me back the night of the crisis within 5 minutes of my leaving a message with the answering service. He was only in town for a week b...

So the mother of what I presume to be an adult with Aspergers wrote in asking for help on getting her son with Aspergers to get some. Yes literally, she wants help to get sex for her son. Frankly I am quite disturbed by this request, and I do wonder if it is a troll [...] (Source: AspieWeb.net)

Lydia’s lost… Ok, I know that I spend way too much time shopping online when I have this fact stuck in my head: Bag Balm is the #3 best selling beauty product on Amazon.com. What’s up with that?!? What’s in this stuff, what does it do, and do I need to buy some?
The Left Brain’s leading reply:
Bag Balm reminds me of “Mane ‘n Tail:” They are both products designed for animals that humans have adopted for their own use. That’s right, Bag Balm is actually a product intended to treat skin condition of animals.
Bombastic about Bag Balm
According to the website for Dairy Association Company, Inc, the company that makes Bag Balm, it’s been used since 1899 to keep cows from becoming chapped. I assume this means it’s used to moisturi...

The D.C. Bag Tax: Collusion against Consumers, Wrapped in Green

By Jim HarperThe bag tax recently instituted in the District of Columbia is a daily annoyance for District residents and a burden on the poor. It was sold as a way to fill the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Fund, and it will move some money to that project, but what’s interesting about it is how exquisitely designed it is to ensure that the incidence of the tax falls on consumers, not on businesses. Indeed, the bag tax may add to businesses’ profits.
Below I’ve copied the language in the D.C. code that establishes the tax. (It’s referred to as a “fee.” Nobody’s buying that.)
It’s not a simple five-cent tax on bags. It requires the consumer to hand over the five cents, and makes it illegal for retailers to absorb the tax. If a sandwich shop wanted to cover the tax a...

Warnnig: Reusable Shopping Bags Could Be Making You Sick
That’s the word from a recent study commissioned and funded by the Environment and Plastics Industry Council(EPIC) in Canada. Randomly testing of reusable bags used by consumers in Toronto turned up an interesting result. It appears that the bags were not only carrying groceries. They are also carrying around high levels of mold, bacteria, and yeast.
Full results indicated that…
* Sixty four percent of the tested reusable bags were contaminated with some level of bacteria
* Nearly 30 percent had bacterial counts higher than what is considered safe for drinking water.
* Forty percent of the bags contained the presence of yeast or mold.
* Some of the sampled bags contained unsafe levels of coliforms and fecal intestinal bacteria....

Following an email from an NHS BLOG DOCTOR reader, I have just caught up the Gaviscon Fireman advertisement. What a joy. How can a drug company get it so so spectacularly wrong? Sian Harcourt wrote about it in the Guardian at the end of last year:As every girl knows, firemen are the very essence of male virility and sexiness. Firemen are just brilliant, performing daily acts of derring-do mostly with their shirts off because it gets a bit sweaty putting out a good blaze. There's that big red rig with lots of hoses gushing out foamy stuff and, best of all, a chance for a bit of pole dancing back at the station.Picture this: insatiable female is overcome by a burning desire so powerful it sears into her stomach lining. Not wanting to embarrass herself in public, wisely she reaches for the Ga...

In an ideal world I would send my children off to school each day with a nutritious, organic, salt free, home made, preservative free, high fibre, low fat perfectly balanced lunch and snack. However, I don’t or rather I don’t live in an ideal world and I send my children to school with a bunch of junk. I send my little darlings to school with a bunch of junk on the off-chance that given a less than perfect setting, they may just eat a mouthful or maybe two. Lunch times are noisy and busy and over stimulating and just about everything is more interesting or testing than eating, which is pretty low down on their personal agendas.Whilst neophobia has been banned from our lives following the 5 year food campaign, it is not a total success. With persuasion and patience he does indeed eat a ...

The winter blahs are a particularly bad problem when you're living in Chicago. Victims report wanting only to sleep, eat, and kill time on the internet. I've heard it called "hibernating," which is a good way to describe it.

There are only two ways to cure my own winter blahs. One: take a long vacation to someplace less blah-y. Arizona and Colorado come to mind.

Two: exercise. Even though it's only 12 degrees out and already dark by 4:30, get those wooly clothes on and go shuffle around outside until you think your face is about to fall off. Then come back home and have a big hot chocolate.

It worked for me in Ann Arbor, and it's working for me now in Chicago. (Source: Glorfindel of Gondolin)

So after that much-mentioned too long wait, Charlie just finished his first week back in the classroom, for the 2008-2009 school year. I finished up my burrito and took him back to the black car, which is so much a comforting space. He was hunched over, but calmed.
Charlie loves to be in motion (hence, his love of the ocean’s waves) and so we’re often at home in the road, in the car. Maybe we’re not exactly living out of a motor home, but sometimes the black car (often with Charlie’s backpack and my overstuffed bag) feels the equivalent. Small wonder, then, that getting home (with the beach house a surrogate for our actual home; we’ve one more week here) feels like we’ve won som...

I'm surprised we don't see this more often.

During the year that I drove an ambulance, I had to deal with a) oblivious drivers, for whom my lights and sirens were like the sound of falling golf clubs to Tiger Woods, and b) crazy-ass Denver Health paramedics who drove like nutjobs.

Needless to say, I wouldn't be surprised if either vehicle was at fault for this crash. (Source: Glorfindel of Gondolin)

While gift shopping for kids on my list, I discovered Goodwill is awash in peculiar plush toys. You can buy them seriously cheap because they’re not the latest Gund or Ty creations. Winnie the Pooh, Elmo and Snoopy don’t live here. Instead you’ll find scowling turtles, polka dotted squirrels, chequered dogs, and animals morphed into something you can’t even identify. Is it a cheerleader or an owl? Whatever it is, somebody didn’t want it, and now it’s in a bin of rejected toys waiting forlornly for a new home.
Shoppers snub them despite their desperate discount availability. What’s 50 cents for a new used toy? Do people ignore them because they’re used, thrift store stigma? I don’t see why it’s important to give a gift that has a...

I think it was sometime in October that Charlie, after lugging in his share of the bulging plastic bags, started (without anyone asking) to put away the groceries. I could stand behind him and tell him a plastic container of toffee, the bananas and the receipt from the store don’t need to go in the refrigerator. But I have rather been waiting and seeing where he puts things away, where Charlie thinks that things should go—it’s a bit of a window into how Charlie sees the world and understands it to be ordered.

Bags of frozen items—vegetables, shrimp—are heaped in the middle the freezer. Boxes with frozen items end up on the top shelf of the refrigerator. A box of crackers is to be found in the cabinet above the sink along with a bag of tortilla chips—-an...

I used to have one, but when I moved a few years ago, I used that opportunity to throw away a lot of stuff I deemed to be unnecessary junk and clutter. Since the FastTake meter was replaced by the One Touch Ultra series of meters, I assumed it was a relic that had no further use. But now I am wondering about whether that may have been a hasty decision. For those of you who don't remember it, the One Touch FastTake meter was the company's first electronic test strip blood glucose meter (prior to its introduction, all of Johnson & Johnson's meters were the traditional reflective strips that were not only much slower, but also required significantly more blood). FastTake was introduced in the mid-1990's, and the meter itself was identical in size and shape to tod...

British "Care in the Community"The closure of long stay mental hospitals started under Margaret Thatcher. A new strategy of “care in the community” was introduced. Many chronically mentally ill, semi-institutionalised patients were turfed out onto the streets. As always the schizophrenics suffered the most. The promised community psychiatric nurses did not materialise and the patients were left to wander the streets. An army of bag-ladies and tramps.New Labour is extending this policy to hospitals that used to admit patients who had acute mental illness. It is closing psychiatric wards across the country. Wards that were providing a place of safety for the acutely mentally ill.As always it is being done in the name of improving health care. Not a mention of cost-cutting. The government ...

As I approach the check-out lines in the grocery store, wouldn't it be cool if all the people who are going to be paying with a check would just glow blue or something? That way, I could tell which line was likely to move the slowest, based on the reasonable assumption that paying with check = takes frigging forever.

That's one super power that I'd like to have -- even if it isn't as cool as caped flight or x-ray vision. (Source: Glorfindel of Gondolin)

The official Rush website has the new single from Snakes&Arrows.

It's got a good bass timbre like the best songs from Vapor Trails. Like most Rush songs, it doesn't grab me by the throat initially, but probably will after I listen to it a few times. Can't wait for the tour.

Rush fans, check out the gallery too. Good stuff. (Source: Glorfindel of Gondolin)

Mark May 1, 2007 down on your calendars, because that's when the new Rush album comes out! Since you probably aren't googling "new rush album", you probably heard it here first. Here's Neil Peart:"Just seeing the power of evangelical Christianity and contrasting that with the power of fundamentalist religion all over the world in its different forms had a big effect on me," he said.

"You try to put your own way of seeing the world into some kind of congruence with other people's, and that's difficult for me. I mean, I see the world in what I think to be a perfectly obvious and rational way, but when you go out into it and see the way other people think and behave, and express themselves on church signs, you realize, 'Well, I'm not really part of this club.'" (Source: Glorfindel of Gondoli...
