10 Things We Want to Do This Weekend

The sweet, sweet weekend is almost here. What are your plans? We’ve got several things in mind for our two days off:

Drink a glass of wine.
Our favorite dietician says that we should drink a glass of wine over a can of Coke. We promise we’ll stick to one glass. Really.

Make our muscles sore — and like it.
We’re going to get in at least one good workout this weekend, and you can bet we’ll savor the burn.

Watch some Oprah.
Sometimes we just want to sit back and see what Her Majesty has to say. Even though she isn’t always right.

Buy a really big energy-efficient TV.
Okay, so maybe we won’t actually buy it. But we can definitely walk around the air-conditioned electronics store and stare at Energy Star-certified 50-inchers.

Go dancing.
It’s a...

Crap Buster: The Clutter Diet's Purse Organizer

You get your morning coffee and spend three minutes hunting in your big, beautiful purse for your wallet and change. You go to the gym, and spend a couple minutes looking for your gym card. Every time your lips are dry, your lip balm seems to have buried itself deeper underneath the clutter in your purse. Add up all that time spent searching in your Mary Poppins-style handbag, and you’re probably spending a lot more time on those purse hunts than you’d like. (Not to mention the dirty looks coming your way while you delay other customers’ morning coffee, digging for a quarter in the bottom of your satchel.)
Organization expert Laurie Marrero, author of The Clutter Diet, says the solution is simple: Any time you’ve got a large, open space, the easiest way to organize ...

Bag Balm: What Does It Do For Skin?

Lydia’s lost… Ok, I know that I spend way too much time shopping online when I have this fact stuck in my head: Bag Balm is the #3 best selling beauty product on Amazon.com. What’s up with that?!? What’s in this stuff, what does it do, and do I need to buy some?
The Left Brain’s leading reply:
Bag Balm reminds me of “Mane ‘n Tail:” They are both products designed for animals that humans have adopted for their own use. That’s right, Bag Balm is actually a product intended to treat skin condition of animals.
Bombastic about Bag Balm
According to the website for Dairy Association Company, Inc, the company that makes Bag Balm, it’s been used since 1899 to keep cows from becoming chapped. I assume this means it’s used to moisturi...

Right Brain’s rant:

We’ve blogged before about how your purse can make you sick and how your shower poof may be full of disease. Well, here’s more good news: your lip gloss may put you at a higher risk for cancer.
Lip gloss danger?
According to this article on MSNBC, some dermatologists claim that lip gloss may increase your risk of skin cancer.
“These lip glosses can make more of the light rays penetrate directly through the skin instead of getting reflected off of the skin’s surface,” says Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Here’s how it works: the moisture in the lip gloss “smooshes down” your lips’ natural protective layer so the UV rays can more easily penetrate deeper into ...

Hey Girls
The Beauty Brains recent story about lip balm prompted Wyeth to send samples of their latest product, ChapStick True Shimmer. I was picked to try them out.
They come in some yummy flavors like Botanical Berry and Tropical.
Initial Reactions
First thing I loved about these lip balms were the fabulous fragrances. Tropical True Shimmer smells like a Pina Colata and Botanical Berry smells like a Cosmopolitan. Can you tell I’m writing this just before happy hour?
I also loved pink packaging! That’s the color they used for Botanical Berry.
Using the Product
I tried Tropical first because I liked how it smelled. It is like putting a Pina Colata on your lips. It glides on so smoothly. It also makes your lips extra shiny. Left Brain tells me that’s because they contain Titanium ...

DVG declares…My lips have been chapped and dry - which causes me to do the worst thing for them: I unconsciously bite at them when they are chapped. I have tried several lip balms and is it possible that they can cause my lips to dry out more than moisturize them? I’ve tried these: Nivea Moisture and Burt’s Bee’s balm in a tin. Both drying.
Can you help me find one that is truly moisturizing? Thank you!
Left Brain’s Lippy Reply
Lip balm is an individual thing. One type may work for one person but not for you. I personally love Carmex Lip Balm. During winter, I can’t get enough!
But on to your question. Perhaps if we look at the ingredients of ones you tried, we can figure out what is going on and steer you towards another type that might give y...

What kind of lip balms or glosses do you use? You may want to stay away from the shiny ones as they may attract ultraviolet rays (UV rays of the sun) and thereby increase the rtisk of skin cancer.
Such were the findings of Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.
Lips are more susceptible than skin to aging from chronic sun damage and also more prone to developing serious cancers.
“When skin cancer occurs on the lower lip, it has the potential to be much more aggressive and metastasize to surrounding lymph nodes,” Brown said in a prepared statement.
Shiny balms and glosses don’t offer protection. Instead, they attract the sun’s rays to the lips.
“What most people don’t realize is they’re actually increa...

Filed under: Skin Cancer, Prevention, Worthy WisdomI'm a little tired of reading and writing about sunscreen. Maybe it's not the actual reading and writing that has me worn out. Maybe it's the realization that I keep reading and writing about sunscreen yet the information is just not sinking in with the masses of sun-hungry people out there -- according to the EPA, there has been a staggering 1,800 percent increase in malignant melanoma cases since 1930. Recent figures show a shocking rise in skin cancers among those in their 20s and 30s. The experts at Canyon Ranch are weighing in on sunscreen. So here I go again, with some more about this tiring topic.

Sunscreen contains unique chemical components which absorb ultraviolet (UV) light. When applied to the skin, the chemical molecules f...
