Hi! Greetings from Breckenridge, Colorado. At 10,000 feet, I am told it is the highest resort town in North America. The Rocky Mountain scenery is breathtaking. But there’s a problem for about one in four of us who visit here, especially people like me who live at sea level. We can get hit with high altitude sickness and a few days ago, I was one of the unlucky ones.
What happens is your body isn’t used to the thin air and your blood has difficulty getting enough oxygen to your body. It usually happens at altitudes over 8,500 feet. You get an ongoing headache, you feel tired, you have insomnia (I was sleepless for two nights!), you could have nausea and certainly fatigue. Drinking lots of water and passing up alcohol can help, but even then some people have problems.
When I finally sa...

In a writing class recently, my teacher said, “Don’t rush the process.” It made me think of a falling feather.
I thought of the way a feather floats down gracefully, floating back and forth, slowly like a dance. There is no rushing a feather. Throwing it down forcefully will not make it get to the ground faster. And there would be something heartbreaking if we tried. We would be missing out out on its beautiful, unpredictable path.
It’s also a way to think about healing. It’s frustrating to not be there yet. It’s normal to want to be 100% over whatever it is that is ailing you. It’s normal to want to be successful without going through the challenges and obstacles it takes to get there.
But remember. No matter how much you want it, forcing it won&#...

Luckily I got chunks of Aged Cheese, Larabars, and Sliced Roast Beef to see me through mornings at motels when the “Complimentary Breakfast Bar” is (sometimes) stocked with ONLY Gluten-Contaminated items.
This is a poweful invitation to gluten relapse. The McD’s is just around the corner. But I know if I go there for breakfast, I am more likely to relapse. And I really don’t need that.

I don’t really think of myself as having a hot temper. But I do have trouble speaking up when something starts to bother me. Thus, the irritant builds and builds, and instead of becoming a pearl, like a grain of stand does in an oyster, it explodes … usually on the person whose behavior I don’t care for and is responsible for making me look and act like a monster.
I’ve been talking about this with my therapist. Because I can remember nothing more horrifying as a kid as those time my dad totally lost it and threw every four-letter word at my mom, or at me or one of my sisters, or all of us, like the time we were making fun of the people in the booth next to us in Dairy Queen. Still can’t get a Buster Bar today without that memory, spanking and all.
So I went ba...

Sue’s shampoo supposition…Do shampoos that don’t contain silicones also leave buildup in the hair over time? If so, what is it that builds up? I’m wondering specifically about LUSH solid shampoos. I’ve read reviews in which users complain of buildup — but of what?
The Right Brain’s reply:
In general, modern liquid shampoos don’t create a buildup problem. That’s a popular belief, but there’s very little scientific evidence to back it up. But could LUSH’s solid shampoos cause buildup? Theoretically, yes. Let’s take a look at the key ingredients in their Godiva shampoo that make this product a solid.
LUSH ingredients
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocoa Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerl Stearate & Peg – 100 Stearate, Ce...

I don’t know about the rest of you medical bloggers, but I’ve been getting emails from folks who run a website called DrugWatch.com asking for reciprocal links and promoting themselves as the go-to place for patients to get up-to-date information on medication safety.
Tucked into the website is this promise: “We will never accept advertising from the pharmaceutical industry.” Right. Because the whole site is a front for a bunch of Orlando lawyers trying to sniff out potential clients for medication-related lawsuits against the pharmaceutical industry. (more…)

Addicted lawyers can overcome barriers to recovery
Robert started drinking at age 18 and was an alcoholic by the time he entered law school. “I managed to get my degree and go to work for a Wall Street firm. After that I changed jobs every two years or less. I just couldn’t hang on to one. Nobody ever mentioned drinking to me. But I’m sure that with every job I lost, drinking was the main reason.”
Images of hard-headed, hard-drinking lawyers abound in popular culture. These images make a point: The professional status granted by a law degree offers no immunity from addiction. The same can be said for people in other prominent professions, such as physicians, pilots and politicians. In fact, the rate of addiction for attorneys may exceed that for the general population.

The message, of course, was that the Bard and all the other Klondike-cravers took the deals for the dessert, not, obviously, for the love of what they were being bribed to do. They just wanted the reward – even the biggest idiot understood that.
Sadly, it seems that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan might be hoping that the public is dumber than the biggest idiot. In a recent interview, he talked as if there might actually be states suddenly making education changes needed to get part of h...

Results were mixed on which would be the best Detour Runner Bar. Chocolate Chip seemed the most popular but the Lemon Yoghurt and Chocolate Peanut Butter were a close second and third.
But the winner of the ‘one-month supply of Detour Runner Bars’, according to my trusty random number organizer, is….
Steve
who said ‘I just started training for a half-marathon in May. I think the Peanut Butter Chocolate bars would be a good energy boost’.
Congratulations Steve. You should be getting an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
And good luck to you with the half-marathon. I’m sure these detour bars will help.
As for the rest of the us, there is always a chance to win tomorrow.

When he wanted a ball, he would pound his chest until he got it. “Sometimes, he wants to communicate so badly, you can hear him from the other room pounding his chest,” Mr. Rattner said. “There’s a lot of emotion there.”

Do you know if it is? Do you know if it’s not?
Most protein powders, protein bars and protein drinks are made with whey protein, which is made from milk. Is your government checking and letting you know if the whey protein products that you’re eating or drinking safe to consume? Especially since the whole Chinese baby milk scandal was because the biggest dairy companies in China where watering down there milk to make more money and using melamine to hide that since adding melamine increases the protein content in such poisoned milk products so the milk doesn’t look like it’s watered down.
Melamine is a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide… Ingestion of melamine may lead to reproductive damage, or bladder or kidney stones, which can lead to bladder cancer

The month or so before the bar exam makes the power of the situation crystal clear. The process of studying for the bar takes thousands of intelligent and accomplished law students and transforms them into anxious, self-doubting creatures whose exam-induced neuroses often extend beyond the confines of the test, poisoning their interactions throughout the summer.
How does this stressful situation impact the lives of these formerly confident and capable law students? How can these students get past the power of the situation to let their proven capabilities carry them through the bar exam, as they have carried them through other difficult situations? Does empirical research shed any light on the subject?

I can’t believe that I can shoot tofu like a B52. Well, without the flame, of course. If you’re interested to try this one, just go to any CAV Wine Bar and Restaurant branch. In the Philippines, there’s a branch located at Bonifacio High Street in the same building where The Spa is located.

In my very honest opinion, I think the best option when a diabetic goes out to eat is to order the good ol’ salad bar! That’s right. Now, you can’t pile salad on half of your plate and then pasta salad, potato salad, Jello salad and other high sugar and carb no no’s, but you can certainly eat all the greens and veggies with a crouton or two.
We took the kids to lunch today and this would be just what I ordered at Ruby Tuesday’s. The salad bar! And it was very yummy. I ate my big ol’ plate of salad and gulped on a diet coke. I love fountain soda and have been limiting my intake of diet coke since all the studies on how it affects diabetics. But boy, one once in a while… yummmy! And give me some credit, it isn’t cheesecake! Haha.
What do you us...

I will try to keep this post real short.
The Journal of Cell Biology carries a very useful article on error bars in experimental biology. Sadly the article is only available with a subscription, but here is a link to the abstract on pubmed. The article talks about error bars in different context and how they should be used. Targeted at the non-statistics geek the article is easy to follow and quite useful.
My good friend Deepak who got me into blogging , recently started podcasting. Like his excellent blog the bbgm podcast is mostly about technology and computing and other things biotech . Deepak is extremely well plugged-in to the web 2.0 world and his podcast is fun medley of the things that catch his attention and the biotech-Bio IT business world . Recently he interviewed me on the fif...

Filed under: Diets, Obesity, Worthy WisdomI wrote recently about the hidden amounts of sugar found in the foods we love so dearly. I learned all about this topic during my visit to Tucson's Canyon Ranch -- a world renowned health and healing destination -- and this sweet lesson came right as I'd decided to rid my diet of as much sugar as possible. Learning that one can of soda houses 12 teaspoons of sugar and a typical container of fruit yogurt has eight sealed the refined sugar deal for me. No more, I say. It's just not worth it.Now here comes the lowdown on fat. Some say the fat we eat is the fat we wear. Perhaps. But one thing is for sure -- fat kills. That's Fit blogger Rigel Gregg wrote a May 24 post all about it, documenting five ways wearing fat can kill us -- it strains our heart a...
