Growing Up With Type 1 Diabetes

In the years I’ve attended CWD’s Friends for Life conference, I always came away with this appreciation for what the conference provides for kids with diabetes, and their parents. Kids – a whole bunch of them – running amuck and clad in green bracelets with pump tubing flapping from underneath their t-shirts … it’s a place where these families hopefully feel normal, and safe, and understood.
But I’m not a kid with diabetes. I’m an adult. (I checked, and it’s true: adult.) I always felt welcomed at past FFL conferences, but people constantly checked for the kid at my side, because the “child with diabetes” surely couldn’t be me. (And then there was that time that the registration lady thought Sara(aah) was my ...

As promised, a handful of House Democrats have introduced legislation that would increase funding and authority for the FDA to monitor drug production - both domestically and overseas - in hopes of improving safety in the wake of the Heparin scandal and other recent episodes that questioned foreign production of meds sold in the US.
The bill would crreate an up-to-date registry of all domestic and foreign facilities serving the US; generate funding for increased Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) inspections for brand and generic drugs; require parity between foreign and domestic inspections; prohibit entry of drugs coming from domestic and foreign facilities that limit, delay or deny FDA inspections; prohibit drugs from entering the US if safety documentation is lacking; requires manufact...

I loved diabetes camp. Actually, that should be in present tense because I continue to love diabetes camp, even though I’m not a camper anymore. Attending Clara Barton Camp for those five summers changed the way I looked at life with diabetes, and my health has always been better for it.
But I’ve talked about camp before. I’d love to play a role in sending other kids to diabetes camp. And thankfully, we as a community now have that chance.
The Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) is in the running to win one of the Pepsi Refresh Project grants. If they earn one, they’ll use their winnings to send kids to diabetes camps and will also arm them with digital filmmaking skills so that the campers can chronicle their experiences with type 1 diabetes. As ...

Clara Barton Camp (CBC) is awesome — this is an indisputable fact. I talk about CBC all the time when I’m at conferences, because there is something so unique and incredibly supportive about knowing that your fellow campers are also insulin-dependent and aren’t afraid to show it.
Part of what makes CBC so cool is that it makes you feel like having diabetes is…sort of cool. Almost everyone at camp has it, so if your pancreas happens to work, it makes you the odd one out instead of part of the WYOI (wear your own insulin) crowd. What’s more empowering than taking an isolating chronic illness and making it the common — and intrinsically cool — thread?
Which is why this video — a diabetes take on the Marcel the Shell with Shoes On — is...

By David RittgersI wrote an op-ed for National Review (Online) last week showing how conservative exploitation of the Supreme Court’s broad misreading of the Commerce Clause to reach intrastate medical marijuana facilitated liberal exploitation of the same to create the individual mandate in Obamacare.
A principled stand on the limits of federal power does not begin and end with health care. The Commerce Clause is a double-edged sword: Conservatives cannot wield it in the drug war without making it a useful tool for advancing progressive visions of federal power.
I’m happy to see Barton Hinkle, winner of the 2008 Bastiat Prize for Journalism, pick up on my writing and drive the point home in today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch:
So far, many conservatives outraged over Obamacare do not se...

The FDA As Paper Tiger: China & A Heparin Probe

The FDA may want to get tough with drugmakers that outsource production (see this), but how hard is the agency trying to get China to cooperate when problems arise? Not hard enough, according to a congressional probe that reveals the FDA repeatedly asked the Chinese government for help in pursuing an investigation into contaminated heparin, but was “severely hampered” by a lack of cooperation.
You may recall that contaminated heparin made in China was linked to 81 deaths in 2007 and 2008 (back story), and the episode sparked a firestorm of criticism at the FDA for its failure to monitor medicines made there (background). Since then, the heparin scandal has faded from view, but the congressional probe revives the matter - and portrays the agency as a paper tiger.

Last week, after Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP for what he called the White House’s “shakedown” of the company, Republicans and Democrats alike couldn’t believe it. But you know what? Maybe there are some things for which we need to apologize to BP. ApologizeToBP.com is up and running for everyone to air the grievances that they’ve committed against BP. You can also use Twitter to show your remorse for the awful things you’ve done to BP with the hashtag #ImSorryBP.
Grist did a round-up of the best apologies, and we chose a few of our faves:
#ImSorryBP for not giving you your props for the 8 other oil rigs you operate that are hardly leaking at all.
#ImSorryBP That people keep referring to the Exxon Valdez spill in reference to your ...

The punitive damages will go to an Illinois woman, Connie Barton, who developed cancer after taking Prempro, Bloomberg reports, although the amount was sealed last week by a Pennsyvlania state court judge until another trial begins. A jury also awarded her $3.7 million in compensatory damages after finding the conduct of Pfizer’s Wyeth was “willful and wanton” in marketing and selling the drug.
Barton’s lawyers presented evidence during the trial about Wyeth efforts to “deflect” criticism of its handling of the drug and its use of ghostwritten articles in medical journals to market Prempro. They also alleged execs hid Prempro’s cancer risks to pump up the drug’s sales, Bloomberg writes.
Annual sales of Wyeth’s hormone-replacement drugs topped $2 billion befor...

Some naive people might have been convinced that the U.S. House voted to wreck the American economy by endorsing cap and trade because it was the only way to save the world. But even many environmentalists had given up on the bill approved last Friday. It is truly a monstrosity: it would cost consumers plenty, while doing little to reduce global temperatures.
But the legislation had something far more important for legislators and special interests alike. It was a pork-fest that wouldn’t quit.
Reports the New York Times:
As the most ambitious energy and climate-change legislation ever introduced in Congress made its way to a floor vote last Friday, it grew fat with compromises, carve-outs, concessions and out-and-out gifts intended to win the votes of wavering lawmakers a...

Discussion was dominated by two stories, that of 13-year-old Adam Race, against whose parents a priest filed a restraining order, and of 5-year-old Alex Barton, who was voted out of his kindergarden class by his classmates, at the suggestion of his teacher, Wendy Portillo. These two incidents sparked some very heated and often acrimonious exchanges and remind me of why there’s a need to think about autistic persons and the community, in faith communities and all others.
Also: It was reported that there had been 72 cases of measles so far in the US, the highest number since 2001—-and the number would only go up, while misinformation about vaccines continued.
Sometimes it seems that everything, if not anything, could be said to cause autism (and that everything, and anything, has...

An editorial in today’s Palm Beach Post reports that Alex Barton’s mother is hopeful that a request for private schooling will be settled soon. A “bigger problem” is also noted:
The bigger problem, as public schools have to deal with more problems with less money, will be seeing that all children get the testing and help that they need - without wasting a lot of time. If Alex had received help more quickly, the Survivor scandal might never have happened.
If training about autism and special needs kids in the classroom had been provided……… if there’d been more and real understanding of what it’s really like to have Asperger’s Syndrome……. if……………

Back in May, 5-year-old Alex Barton was voted out of his kindergarten class by his classmates. His teacher, Wendy Portillo, had asked the students to vote on whether they wanted Alex to remain. Alex’s mother, Melissa Barton, removed Alex from the school following this incident, which received a great deal of attention in the national media. Portillo has been suspended for a year without pay and is asking that her her case be reviewed by the state Division of Administrative Hearings. Alex is now being taught at home and Melissa Barton is requesting that the St. Lucie County School District pay for private school, psychological testing and counseling for him, as reported in today’s Palm Beach Post:
Barton filed a complaint with the district in late August seeking an administrativ...

In an essay that takes a top-down view of the agency and its myriad problems protecting the supply of pharmaceuticals, Gardiner Harris of The New York Times reviews the highlights - or lowlights - of the past year or so: the Heparin deaths, the Ranbaxy scandal and the withering criticism from Congress.
And he notes some of the issues bedeviling the FDA as it struggles to cope with the growing role played by Chinese suppliers: antiquated FDA computer systems, an inability among FDA staff to decipher names of Chinese plants, difficult travel conditions for agency inspectors, and, of course, the debate over sufficient FDA funding. For instance, this year, 18.2 million shipments of food, devices, cosmetics and drugs are expected to enter more than 300 US ports, but the FDA had 454 investigator...

As advertisers and networks have been dropping Michael Savage’s show in the wake of his infamous comments (here’s a list of 20 audio clips), here’s an email he sent to The Hook (Virginia):
The drug companies are very powerful and have worked very hard to silence any voice critical of the misdiagnosis of our children and the drugging of vulnerable minds. Sad the station manager is such an ignorant man.
Seems Savage is trying to portray himself as the misunderstood defender of so many poor misdiagnosed, “vulnerable [minded]” children and so offers up this defiant attempt parting shot. Guess a simple apology’s too hard.

Talk Radio Network has announced that it will not be firing Michael Savage in the wake of his incendiary comments about autism. From the press release:
Dr. Savage has clarified that his July 16th statements concerning autism were not directed at those who are in fact challenged by this horrible affliction, but were instead addressing efforts to broaden the concept of autism beyond those who truly are autistic to a broader “autistic spectrum” of behavioral symptoms which are also manifested by persons who do not suffer from autism, and his concern that many children are being misdiagnosed as autistic due to the subjective nature of autism diagnosis (due to the lack of known biomedical indicators, such as blood tests, to definitively confirm or deny the actual existence of autism).

So I finally got around to reading Michael Savage on the Autism Controversy after grading papers, going swimming with Charlie and explaining to the water aerobics teacher why the boombox was contributing to him looking mighty distressed and since the class was over maybe it could be turned off?, making Charlie’s lunch, overseeing him practice cello, searching for the Leapster (not necessarily in that order). Yes, I know you’ve all read it, blogged it, rolled your eyes over it, read too many websites inveighing over the mean-spiritedness of remarks.
It seems no wonder that right wing talker Michael Savage’s last name is, well, “Savage” after reading what he said about autism on his radio show. I’ll list the words he uses to refer to autism:
moron, putz, idiot, fool, dummy, a girl, losers, beaten men
More of Savage’s savagery is quoted on Left Brain/Right Brain.
If Savage’s intent was to shock, using such words about autistic children is a no-brainer way to do it and perhaps ratings will spike as rightfully indignant autistic self-advocates and parents of autistic children respond. What troubles me in particular is Savage’s contention that autistic children are just brats behaving badly, and brats parented by laissez-faire “let it be” types of parents, especially in the wake of more...

What do these apply to?
Are these perhaps a few reasons why a 2 year old and his mother were kicked off an American Eagle plane, or a 13-year-old’s parents had a restraining order filed against them, or a 5 year old was voted out of his class?

Last month, Joe Barton, the ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, demanded info that would explain a drop in arrests and convictions by the Office of Criminal Investigations. Now, Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, wants to know if cases were dropped due to influence from other FDA officials, The Wall Street Journal writes.
The moves follow a report released last winter by House Republicans showing the FDA isn’t bouncing researchers and drugmakers that commit crimes when seeking approval for meds. Grassley cites the scandal over the Sanofi-Aventis antibiotic, Ketek.
At issue is concern that OCI is, instead, overly emphasizing drug-abuse cases, such as OxyContin, and its efforts often duplicate probes by the Drug Enforcement Ad...

All parents are teachers but many of us are mere amateurs. I have long been an admirer of the teaching profession, their vocation and dedication, all of them. We entrust our children into their care, in loco parentis, secure in the knowledge that they will do their part in guiding them along the treacherous path to adulthood. I was therefore a little alarmed to read that a young Kindergartener, "Alex Barton," had been voted out of his class, a bit like one of those popular reality shows on the telly. This wasn’t a case like "Lord of the Flies," where the children had run amuck without adult supervision, but rather, his ousting was instigated by his teacher. It made "me" wonder. It made lots of "people" wonder. It made his mum take "action."I wondered why a teacher might do such a thing? ...

So far this year, the agency has prohibited seven physicians from conducting trials of drugs and devices, which amounts to as many as in the three previous years combined, Bloomberg News writes, and adds the move came after lawmakers complained about delays in discipline.
The FDA can disqualify researchers found for misconduct, such as falsifying results, during studies. Among those banned this year was Maria Anne Kirkman Campbell, who pleaded guilty to fraud in 2003 in connection with a study on a Sanofi-Aventis antibiotic. Please see the FDA web site.
Lawmakers, including Representative Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, have criticized the FDA for taking years in some cases to act against researchers after finding violations, but the docs are eligible to continue conducting studies for su...

Now that it is the first of June, my son is down to his last two weeks of being at the school he’s been at for the past two years. He starts Extended School Year in the middle of June; it’ll be at the middle school and with the teacher who’ll be Charlie’s teacher in the fall. Moving up and on.
Here’s what got talked about here last week:

Neurodiversity in New York Magazine
New York Magazine has a long article by writer Andrew Solomon about, indeed, neurodiversity, the view that autism is not an illness, but a difference and a different way of being.
An Invasion of MMR/Vaccine Misinformation
To read an article about the MMR vaccine and autism in the May 26th Telegraph, you’d think there was plenty of reason for the “debate” to be “rei...

While the rest of his classmates went on a field trip, an autistic student at Stephen Decatur School in Philadelphia sat in class with a bus aide, CBS3 news reports:
While his classmates went on the trip, Jimmy was supposed to enjoy a day of learning, but that was not the case.
Dawn said her son was left in a classroom with only his bus assistant who is not trained to teach autistic children.
“I cried, I cried first and I just had it,” Dawn said. “I thought you had a choice, you could just sit there and take it or you do something about it.”

See this comment for news about Nate Tseglin going home.
Autism rights have been much under discussion of late:

A restraining order was filed against the parents of Adam Race by a priest in Bertha, Minnesota, regarding Adam attending church.
The “voting out” of Alex Barton, from his kindergarten class; the teacher, Wendy Portillo, has been removed from the classroom.
An article about the “autism rights movement” and neurodiversity in the latest New York magazine.

And there is also the case of 17-year-old Nate Tseglin, who was removed from his parents’ home and institutionalized; some more details here and at the website, Get Nate Home.

In Port Saint Lucie, Florida, a five year old boy was voted out of his Kindergarten class by his classmates and a truly deploarable excuse for a teacher. This teacher had the students tell Alex Barton, age FIVE, exactly what they dislike about him. Alex is being evaluated for Asperger Syndrome and has since this spring. Diagnosis, though, isn't what matters here. What matters is that this so called teacher acted in a thoroughly detestable manner towards a child. This is hateful, builds stigma, and builds hate. Not acceptable. If you can't handle kindergarteners you shouldn't teach kindergarten. It is really that simple. Spreading the idea that it's ok to treat others like garbage just makes it all the worse. She has no business working with kids if she cannot control herself. Adults who bull...

My father was in the Navy which meant that we never had to endure any one school for very long, as there was always another posting hanging in the wings to bring relief. The crunch came with boarding school where my education was stabilized from 11 until I was 18. Like many marginalized children, not in the ‘in crowd,’ I made it to adulthood relatively unscathed. That was all back in the bad old days when people were more narrow minded, ancient history. These days people are more enlightened, open minded and accepting of differences great and small. We enjoy an 'inclusive' mentality and marginalize the judgmental tendencies.Other people are far less fortunate than me. Their experiences defy comprehension.Today I learned of a young man who was ostracized publicly, his n...

As promised last month, Anna Eshoo, a Democrat from California - specifically, the region where many biotechs and venture capitalists are based - has now introduced legislation that would create a so-called pathway for FDA approval while offering brand-name companies 12 years of exclusivity, plus an extra two years for a medically significant innovation. That adds up to, yes, 14 years. (This is the bill and this is the summary).
Not surprisingly, the BIO trade group was ecstatic in its praise for Eshoo and Joe Barton, a Texas Republican who joined her in sponsoring the bill, which calls for studies to demonstrate safety and efficacy; requires the FDA to create a mechanism to determine whether products are interchangeable and also requires the agency to issue guidances for biosimilar approv...

A pair of Republican Congressmen want the Government Accountability Office to investigate delays by the FDA in disciplining researchers who break rules while testing drugs in people, Bloomberg News reports. Joe Barton of Texas and John Shimkus of Illinois wrote a letter to the GAO saying the FDA’s oversight of clinical trials needs to be reviewed “thoroughly.”
Their letter cited a Feb. 29 Bloomberg News report that said the FDA failed to complete disciplinary action against 12 researchers after proposing that they be disqualified from trials based on findings that they violated agency rules to protect patients and ensure accurate data. Cases have remained unresolved for as long as a decade, allowing researchers to work on more studies.

If you haven’t already, go and read Mike’s amusing and pertinent post, World of Bioinformatics Quest: Character generation. Which one are you?
I often think that in academic research at least, there are 3 types of bioinformatics:

Bioinformatics that provides insight into biological systems
The ideal case being that you make a computational prediction which is then confirmed experimentally. Requires close collaboration between you and wet lab colleagues. By far the rarest category.

Bioinformatics that provides insight into biological data
An example might be a statistical analysis of the PDB to identify factors common to protein chains that interact. Often useful and may overlap with type (1) in the best cases.

Bioinformatics that develops an algorithm or statistical procedur...
