As my (few) readers know, I blog Beatles covers. While researching “She Loves You” on YouTube last night, I came across this little gem of a cover from the year 1980, on the Lawrence Welk Show:

Some facebook friends commented that the Welk video beats even the loathsome William Shatner cover of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

And I would have to add Sebastian Cabot’s version of the Bob Dylan tune “It Ain’t Me Babe” to the mix.

Which is the worst? Cast your vote in comments.

— The Beatles
Love is a serious mental disease
— Plato
In honor of the month of Valentines Day, I wanted to introduce a collection of articles about what love is, the theory behind it, and the research that supports it. Poets, painters, musicians, sculptures, photographers and writers need not worry that science is muscling in on their territory. We just want to add our voice to the chorus.
In the book, A General Theory of Love, authors, Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini & Richard Lannon, review what we know about attraction and neuroscience. They generate an interesting framework from which to launch this series. They begin with something that provides a foundation upon which the theory and practice of love can be built: “Because it is part of the physical ...

Had John Lennon not died in 1980, this year he would have celebrated his 70th birthday on Oct. 9. And a month later, he would have seen the Beatles catalog appear on iTunes for the first time. In one week, Apple sold 1.4 million Beatles songs.
“Just imagine that we could live our favorite melodies,” Carly Paige of Phoenix sings on “Just Imagine,” which she composed out of Beatles song titles. She uploaded the video to YouTube on Jan. 14, 2010. She was 12 years old at the time. Now she’s 13…

“Tribute to Her,” uploaded to the Internet on Nov. 7, 2008, is a slideshow of Election Day photographs. YouTube member SailorBrownie described her post as a “dedication to all those Black Americans who went out on Tuesday and voted. We made history.”
While it’s not altogether clear who is the “Her” in the title of the video, it might as well be the woman collapsed on the floor in tears. A girl nearby touches her cheek with a little confusion and a lot tenderness for the woman who is, most likely, her mother. The pictures are set to the Beatles song, “Blackbird” — a good choice, considering it was the civil rights drama playing out across the pon...

What surprises me is that no matter how healthy we’ve become through therapy or how advanced we are as a society, there is still a lot we can do to be and do better. There are, for example, still roadblocks ahead concerning mental health stigma. On top of that there’s the economy, natural disasters, and the oil spill, oh my! With the weight of the world on our shoulders adding significant baggage to our already piled up plate of worries, perhaps now more than ever, quoting the title of the 1965 Beatles song, “What the World Needs Now is Love.”

Nurse Andrea Bartlett is literally having a meltdown. She is in the midst of her midlife crisis. Nurses like her are easy to spot. She’s having a hot flash, note the hand to her forehead and the look on her face that says, “Crap, I’m going to pass out,” and she’s reliving her hippy Peace Corps days by working as a Congo nurse. I bet she is kicking herself for leaving home, especially at her age. After all, who in their right mind would give up their Mac computer and iPhone.

It’s official. I’m having my midlife crisis. I knew I had hit crisis mode the day one of my patients tried eloping from the unit. I saw the patient racing down the hallway towards the door, and my brain said, “Run, catch the patient,” and, after a few strides, my joints started screaming, “Brain, ...

I don’t know if I would want to nominate my “favourite Beatle” - they are all awesome, although I’d probably if pushed lean towards the more serious ones (or the dead ones) John and George. Similarly I wouldn’t want to have to choose my favourite Beatles song, but certainly “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” would be right up there - not only is it an awesome song written by George, but Eric Clapton played guitar on the original. Few would probably immediately nominate the artist known once again as Prince in the same category of guitar heroes as Clapton, but check out his amazing, theatrical solo in this tribute to George… this man can wield a Telecaster with style!

(Second part of Love Them? We Do. This month marks the 45th anniversary of the first number-one hit by The Beatles in the United States. The song was “Love Me Do.”)
It’s the rare cover that matches or supercedes the original (Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley comes to mind) but that’s not what I seek on YouTube. Some performers take a song and “make it their own.” Others do impressive, if slavish, reproductions of the originals. Others make up in sincerity, charm or passion what they lack in skill.
In case you’re wondering, the reason I like covers is because they represent a kind of universal language. And because you can listen to a song you love only so many times before you get sick of it — unless you’re listening to a ne...

(Updated May 13, 2009 with new videos.)
Forty-five years ago this month The Beatles snagged their first bonafide hit when “Love Me Do” reached the top of the charts in the United States. I was just ten years old, but even so, I listened. The Beatles were my introduction to rock and roll.
No one then could have predicted how lasting or profound their influence would be. Today I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news of John Lennon’s death, just as I do for JFK’s assassination, the Challenger explosion and 9/11.
The Beatles
For some time now I’ve been blogging YouTube covers of Beatles songs. The people of Japan adore The Beatles, but then, so does everyone else.

Also 10 versions of “Moon River” You Heart Breaker, 8 of “I Will” Your Song Will Fill the Air, 13 of “Ue O Muite” I Look Up As I Walk and 9 love songs Meet Me in Montauk. Musicians the world over are uploading messages in bottles. We are the lucky recipients.

If you like music, check out the Open Mic posts. You Heart Breaker pays homage to Audrey Hepburn, the song “Moon River” and features the best covers on YouTube. Likewise the Beatles and “I Will” in Your Song Will Fill the Air. And I Look Up When I Walk (also known as “Ue O Muite,” the only song in Japanese to top the charts in the West). Some of the best love songs ever written in Meet Me in Montauk. Blackbird Fly pays tribute to voters, our new president and the Paul McCartney song “Blackbird,” perhaps the most ubiquitous song on YouTube. Every day up pops a dozen or so new “Blackbird” covers Out of hundreds from all over the world, I chose 19.

I can’t prove it right now, but I’m more and more thinking that Charlie may well have perfect pitch.
Though without a piano or cello teacher (I’ve followed a few leads, but with no luck, yet), Charlie has still been practicing, and has often asked to “play cello” in the later afternoon, before he and I go on our usual walk. Last week, after I took the cello out of its case, a few strums on the strings revealed that it was really out tune. As in, really, the D way way too low, the G unidentifiable, the C low, and loose.
With Charlie saying “play cello,” “play cello,” I turned the pegs, just a bit, but with the memory of how I once broke a string on my viola still fresh, I was very hesitant. Charlie kept asking to play and so I brought th...

Little Rock Central High, 1957
After blogging “I Will” covers, I was curious to see what a search of Blackbird would turn up.
One singer prefaced his cover with an apology: There are more versions of “Blackbird” on YouTube than grains of sand on the beach, but he’s going to sing it anyway.
Indeed, when I did a search, there were a dozen new “Blackbird” covers uploaded in just the last 24 hours.
I always liked “Blackbird,” but recent events make it even more relevant. Paul McCartney wrote the song in his kitchen in Scotland after watching race riots erupt in America.
Below are 12 unique covers of “Blackbird.” But first, the Beatles original in SailorBrownie’s tribute to our new president Barack Obama, to the citizens wh...

Alison Krauss’s cover of the Beatles song I Will is pretty, but a little too mechanized for my taste.
What I really wanted Maura O’Connell’s haunting version on her 1994 CD Just in Time, but that wasn’t on YouTube. And a while back, when I went looking for “Wild Mountain Thyme,” it was a gentle amateur’s version that blew away the pros.
Not surprisingly, many of the “I Will” covers by unknowns were off-key. But of the singers that weren’t, I thought each had a unique beauty. (For the record Ross Copperman is apparently not an unknown. I’m just out of the loop.)
Here are seven very different covers of Paul McCartney’s “I Will” by fans and fellow musicians.

As a direct result of The Beatles’ success, Dr Timmis claimed, the scanner’s inventor, Sir Godfrey Hounsfield, was able to devote about four years developing the scanner from its 1968 prototype, to something that could be used in a clinical setting. His work was done in the Central Research Laboratory, a facility near Heathrow airport that was part of the EMI Group. Having sold 200 million of the Fab Four’s singles, (at seven inches, almost enough vinyl to stretch the length of the equator) the Beatles’ record company, EMI, was able to fund Hounsfield to do his research and the CT scanner was ready be used in hospitals in the 1970’s.
