Art Therapy Exercises To Try at Home

I’ve always loved art. Looking at interesting, unique, beautiful-in-their-own-way images and objects always has made me feel alive and happy. As a child and teen, I also loved drawing, painting and creating everything from collages to greeting cards. And I loved losing myself in the work.
So I was excited to learn more about art therapy, where clients create their own art to help them express emotions, better understand themselves and grow in general.
In her book, The Art Therapy Sourcebook, art therapist Cathy A. Malchiodi describes various exercises that readers can try at home. Below are three that I found especially helpful.

By the way, remember that this has little to do with artistic ability or the final product. Instead, Malchiodi suggests focusing on the process, your intu...

Sometimes when I’m in need of a little inspiration, I head out for a short walk. Today, as I meandered through the tree lined path of my apartment complex, I found it.
I kept ending up in the direction of a beautiful fountain. The sound of the water as it sprung up in the air like fireworks and then gently falling as it lapped softly against the rocks was soothing. I thought about what the water represented, that regardless of whether it was thrust up in the air or moved gracefully to the bottom, it was the same unchanged substance. I realized that no matter what you did to it, the water was still water flowing in a fountain.
The same could be said about you. You may have emotions that carry you from the highest mountain peaks to the valley lows, but you are at the core that unchange...

Writing a Commencement speech is like writing your eulogy: You have to nail down in 10 minutes or less a succinct message that represents your entire life. It’s best to capture all the sweat and tears, the laughter and sorrow, life’s drama in a few tight, coherent paragraphs.
Having been asked to give one in May to my alma mater, Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, I have been studying Commencement addresses of the pros: J.K. Rowling, Anna Quindlen, Oprah Winfrey, and Steve Jobs. And here’s what all of them had in common: suffering.
Yep. The primary theme in each of these essays is that suffering is the rubble on which success is built. I’m sure that you can bypass suffering altogether, but then you’d have a rather boring Commencement speech. I’ve read some of th...

Journaling — the act of writing things down somewhere (where doesn’t really matter) — has many benefits. Here’s an important one:
“It’s not in the rereading that one finds solace but in the writing itself. It’s like crying—you don’t know why, but you feel so much better afterward. Everything pours, streams, flows, out of you aimlessly,” writes Samara O’Shea in her beautifully written book Note to Self: On Keeping A Journal And Other Dangerous Pursuits.
Here’s another: Journaling is a profound — and simple — way to get to know yourself better. To figure out what makes you tick. What makes you happy. What makes you defensive. What makes you giggle or grateful or grieve. What makes you who you are.
Quite simply, it’s a grea...

“Did you ever observe to whom the accidents happen? Chance favors only the prepared mind.”

A friend of mine recently went through a tough time: a personal crisis. She was scouring for signs of something positive, anything that would offer a ray of hope or light for her situation. She decided to go out for some tea when she encountered a woman, unknown to her, who began chatting about the trials and tribulations of her life.
The woman spoke of gratitude for those who had courage, and at the end of what was essentially a monologue the woman said to my friend: “Everybody goes through difficulties. Surround yourse...

We often hear of how beautiful people seem to get all the breaks — first through the door at nightclubs, being chosen to be on a team or as a friend based upon looks alone, even getting a date just because of your physical beauty. But as previous research has shown, sometimes being beautiful can put a person at greater risk while they try and attain an ideal of beauty that doesn’t exist.
Now new research suggests another barrier faced by some of the beautiful people — applying for a job. In the study, attractive women were discriminated against when applying for jobs considered “masculine” and for which appearance was not seen as important to the job. Such positions included job titles like manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer ...

BEAUTIFUL SMILES NOTICED FIRST Beautiful Teeth and a Radiant Smile are usually among the first things noticed when you meet a new person. However, there is a difference between what men observed first and what women view initially about a person. Is ADHD a serious problem in children? Absolutely. But can it be too-quickly diagnosed without a thorough mental health evaluation of the child? Yes, even today.

Smoking – Glamorous? Don’t think so.
Doctors have long since known that smoking was bad, leading to heart disease, and cancer. But what is shocking is that women appear to be more vulnerable than men to the cancer-causing effects of smoking tobacco. Low tar, low nicotine, or filtered products makes no difference either. Swiss scientists found women tended to be younger when they developed the cancer, despite having smoked on average significantly less than men. Of course, we know that pregnant women deliver smaller, more sickly babies when they smoke during gestation, but it goes much farther than that.

Models who smoke to keep thin, won’t have to worry that much as they won’t be modeling long.

Want to Know Why the U.K. Tory Party Is Revamping its Development Policy?

If so, just pick up a copy of James Tooley’s The Beautiful Tree: A Personal Journey into How the World’s Poorest People Are Educating Themselves.
The Tories have looked at the evidence amassed by James and his colleagues (see p. 36 of their new report) and concluded that the best way to advance education in developing countries is to encourage and support existing entrepreneurial schools that are already serving the poor. And if the polls are any guide, that will likely be official government policy in the U.K. before too long.
Congratulations to James, Pauline Dixon, and their wonderful team for bringing sanity to the development policy debate. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

It is used to fix a variety of dental situations. Some of the things that dental composite bonding material can be used to fix are certain small tooth breaks, tooth cracks and chips on teeth. A wonderful use of this material is to close some spaces between teeth called diastemas. Of course, its most common and original use is for fillings in anterior teeth after the removal of decay. However, in the last decade it has been used by Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists for posterior teeth after decay removal, since our office went amalgam free with all of our fillings. A BEAUTIFUL SMILE IS NOTICED IMMEDIATELY. Patient of Dr Cynthia Pauley.
BEAUTIFUL SMILES NOTICED FIRST
Teeth and a Beautiful Smile are among the first things noticed by a stranger, much of the time. However, it depends on whether women or men are being observed. The face and head, along with the body, are perceived differently by men and women. This is according to a recent study by the Baluke Dental Studios and published in Gallery Dental Smile Designs by Patient News Publishing 2009. Therefore, this is very recent information about how a smile is perceived by people.
WOMEN have their eyes noticed first by men according to the survey. The Smile and Teeth were the second thing about women that was noticed by men. ...

BELLEVUE COSMETIC DENTISTRY WORKS FOR MEN THE SAME AS WOMEN
Like the handsome men in the five photographs below, men in general are able to acquire significantly attractive smiles with various Cosmetic Dentistry procedures. In addition to the increased physical attractiveness resulting from Cosmetic Dental work, men with an outgoing personality are going to become even more outgoing after their smiles are altered or changed. They will, like women, most likely have better personal lives and better work opportunities subsequent to having cosmetic dental work done. In some cases only minor alterations need to be performed, such as tooth whitening, while in other cases an extreme makeover is needed with multiple procedures being involved.

This is a photo I took of Chunky, one of Qingzi’s babies (but now, an almost-adult hamster), when I took her from her aquarium while sleeping. She never even bothered to wake up and continued to curl inwards, sleeping. I guess she’s already learned to trust me that much she isn’t even worried that I might drop her. For me, this photo is beautiful because it shows how our pets love us in return for the care and love that we give them.
I’m a bit sad, though, that I’ve to give her away today to a close friend. I can only keep a certain number of hamsters at home and Dad chose to keep the other one, Maws. But then, I’m sure my friend will take good care of her. And maybe I’ll be able to see her again when I get to visit my friend.

This is what I see right now outside my window.Colors bursting, sharpened by the straight cool of the air. Pink heat pushes out. Autumn watches calmly. Summer dances in the heat of its sun, happily lost in play. With a slow stretch Autumn gathers herself. Summer's bedtime has come. (Source: azureone)

She passed away a few days ago after battling bone metastasis for eight years. She recently had leg surgery and never recovered. I met Christine a few times at the Young Survival Conference held by LBBC and the YSC.
Christine was featured in The Beautiful Eight -- An educational video for women living with metastatic disease.
She was recently quoted in the March/April issue of MAMM magazine.

Weeding the Garden - Part 2

When I started working on the back yard it was so overgrown that it looked like a jungle. Vines had wound their way across the yard, trees had grown up through some old chicken wire tossed to the side, a cushion from a lawn chair had decomposed and weeds had grown up through the stuffing. In the past when I had tried to get out there and clean things up I would get overwhelmed and depressed and feel ashamed and mad I had to do it and then would quit and feel guilty about it. But working through the resentment I had about the back yard changed my whole experience. While chopping down vines, I began to see a parallel between getting the yard back together and recovery work. Now hang on, I know that sounds like a stretch, but it really worked for me.As I started to pull up a vine in the middle...

I often find my mind wandering into fantasies. And not some happy fantasy, but a scenario where I am the victim and someone is being really mean to me, or a "poor me" fantasy.Recently I was walking through my neighborhood admiring all the beautiful homes and gardens and in to my brain pops the message, "I wish I could afford to live in one of these houses but I'll never make enough money and the housing market is inflated and only rich people who don't care about the world live in these houses and I should move to another town but I don't have any money and ...." Whew, it was time to take a breathe.Through my recovery work I've learned to take a step back from these thoughts when they come up and try and observe them from another angle. I ask God to help me see the truth and how I may be m...

Filed under: Daily news, SportsOakland Athletics center fielder Nick Swisher appeared at Saturday evening's pregame event wearing three ponytails. Prepared to donate his locks to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths non-profit campaign, Swisher said just before his ponytails were snipped, "I feel like Pippi Longstocking. I look so goofy right now. But if I can make a difference in one or two women's lives, it's worth it."Swisher's father -- major league baseball player Steve Swisher -- did the cutting honors. And it was fitting the two men were in on this endeavor together because Swisher's grandmother -- his dad's mother -- died from brain cancer two years ago."The initial idea was out of respect for my mom -- but the second thing is: It's time for a haircut,'' Steve Swisher said. "I'm so proud ...

I am waiting for my hot flash to go away.... go away hot f****** flash, for good please. Anything that disturbs my sleep needs to go. Adoption. Lately I have been thinking about Kristina and all she has accomplished since I adopted her from Kazakhstan. I am reading other blogs about some new journeys and I am dreaming about my own. I wish that I blogged about it then but it was over 6 years ago. I was really not aware of the blog scene until recently. Kristina came from Almaty, Kazakhstan. It really is a beautiful place. It is in between Russia and China. It was once a part of the Soviet Union and has been an independent country for less than twenty years. The country has pretty much an equal amount of Russians as Kazakh people. AT least in the city. They lived side by side with really lit...

Today was better. The children went to school and I took care of business with my treatment. It was uneventful. Which is always a major bonus. It was beautiful out in NY today. The girls played for almost two hours on the swings while the dogs ran around. My Uncle, Aunt and cousin Alicia were back from vacation and we sat outside and talked. Simple things like that are what I love about life and I usually just ignore them. It is not until something goes wrong that I realize how beautiful every day life really is. Open my heart, that is what I need to do.Have a great night.P.S. Mom is doing great, I saw her today and brought her some stuffed flounder. I'm the best.P.P.S. Kristina has been doing so well in school, we got a Carvel sundae before we picked up Grace from school. Aren't we mean?I ...

Not much news here. Enjoying the beautiful warm and sunny September weather. No news about my removal. My fears seem to have become smaller. Due to all the sorrow and fears I seem to have lost nearly 2 kilogrammes in 1 month time. That is far too much! I try hard to eat more. Because my special interest has become less intensive, I have more appetite! This Friday I will do something special related to autism. Can not tell you exactly what it is, but it seems to be very interesting. (Source: The Art of Being Asperger Woman)
