Georgia asks…I’ve seen three types of nail strengtheners advertised: formaldehyde; protein; and, calcium floride. Is one of these better than the others? Which would be best for my nails, which are thin, weak, and break at the sides?
The Left Brain responds:
There are two basic kinds of strengtheners: Hardeners and Hydrators. By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each type you’ll be able to pick the one that’s right for you.
How Hardeners work
Cross-linking hardeners: This kind of hardener works on the inside of the nail with ingredients that react with the protein in your nails. When your nails are weak, the protein is like a ladder with broken rungs – the ladder feels loose and wobbly. But you can make the ladder sturdier by adding extra rungs to conn...

Gilda’s going shopping… My hair is thick, coarse and dry. Which product should I buy, PANTENE or HERBAL ESSENCES?
The Left Brain responds:
It’s interesting that you ask about those two products because, as you can tell if you look at the ingredient lists, they are actually the same basic formula. (They are even covered by the same patents).
Equal ingredients
Take a look at Pantene’s Ice Shine conditioner and Herbal Essences’ Hydration Conditioner. If you turn the bottles around you’ll see that the first five key ingredients are exactly the same:
Water, Stearyl Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetyl Alcohol, and Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine.
Are these similarities surprising? Not at all considering that P&G (the company that makes Pantene) bought Clairol (the comp...

NatashaK asks… I have noticed that my hair looks its absolute best (volume + less frizz + not greasy) 3 days after I shampoo it. I was hoping to attain this effect faster (like on day 2), and I figure using my natural scalp oils is the best way to do that. My question is: What flipping hairbrush will best take some of my top-of-head oils all the way to the ends of my hair (about 2ft)? I have been using a paddle brush for as long as I can remember. I have a fear of combs fostered by a childhood filled with knotty hair and tears. I have found that bristle brushes don’t really get all the way through my hair (only brushes the top layer), but I haven’t picked one up in about 10 years and would be willing to try again.

Getreadyatgems says (via Twitter #bbloggers)…I like finding cheaper dupes of high end products.
The Right Brain responds:
GRAG, We agree, dupes are a great way to save money! (Remember, if the first five ingredients listed on the back of the package are the same then the products are probably pretty similar.)
Drugstore Doubles
One our favorite resources for finding good dupes is the Cosmetic Cop, Paula Begoun. She has a feature on her site that she calls Drugstore Doubles. She lists expensive products and then gives you a much cheaper product that works the same way.As she describes it: “If you like this Department Store Skin-Care favorite . . . then you’ll love this Drugstore-priced recommendation!” It’s such a good idea that we wish WE would have thought of it ...

Veronica’s Very Concerned… Are eye creams really necessary? I’ve been using them for years, and I’m starting to wonder if they are really specially formulated for skin around the eyes. Why do I say so? Because I compared ingredients comparison between a face moisturizer (Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream) and eye cream (Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum) and found that they’re very similar. What gives?
The Right Brain Tries To Assuage Her:

You’re right, eye and face cream formulas can be pretty similar. Of course, this varies from brand to brand, but it’s certainly possible for a company to formulate and test a product that works perfectly well on your face and under your eyes. So while in principle there’s nothing with usin...

Marci’s Enymatic Inquiry: My esthetician told me about Babor Enzyme Cleanser and highly recommended that I try it. She says it’s great because it uses natural enzymes that target only dead skin cells and leave living skin cells alone. Can this really work?
The Right Brain’s Catalytic Comments:
As a matter of fact, enzymes can cause very specific reactions. But let’s start at the beginning…
What Is An Enzyme?
Enzymes are chemicals that speed up the rate of chemical reactions without themselves being consumed in the reaction. They’re incredibly useful in biological processes because they can make a reaction that normally requires dangerously high temperatures occur at normal body temperatures. Basically, without enzymes we’d all be dead.

Hi Eb, we’re always glad to answer questions from our male readers! Without actually examining your scalp it’s hard to say what`s going on upstairs, but here are three tips that might help:
1. Suds your skull
What are you washing your scalp with? Bar soap? That might be stripping your skin of essential oils. Try baby shampoo or a mild body wash.
2. Chrome your dome
Are you applying sunscreen to your head? You should! Even if you wear a hat most of the time you might be...

Here’s a great tip for the Do-It-Yourself crowd: Duct tape can cure warts!
Yes, it’s true, according to Anthony J. Mancini M.D., an associate professor at Northwestern University’s School of Medicine Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Dr. Mancini says he uses duct tape as an inexpensive and relatively painless way to treat warts. He has his patients apply the duct tape over the wart, leave it on for about a week, remove the tape, and then file the wart with an emory board. It’s that easy. But how can such a simple household item treat a sustained viral infection?
No one knows, at least not for sure. But theoretically the tape could be debriding, or stripping the dead skin from the wart and carrying the wart virus along with it. That’s kind of how ...

Fire Pits has a fire in her pits: Is there any ingredient other than aluminum that works as an antiperspirant? I ask not because I am afraid of getting Alzheimer’s, but because the antiperspirants I’ve tried make me itch like mad.
The Right Brain responds:
I hear you girl, antiperspirants can be itchy and irritating, especially after shaving. But as far as the Alzheimers connection is concerned, you’re wise to be skeptical. There’s no proof that aluminum antiperspirants cause Alzheimer’s.
Nonetheless, here are 4 ways you can switch to avoid that itch:
1. Switch to deodorant instead of antiperspirant.
Deodorants don’t contain aluminum so they’re less likely to make you itch. But remember they won’t stop you from sweating either; they’ll...

Katie is curious…I have been doing a lot of research on Collagen Induction Therapy using a derma roller. It’s a roller device with a bunch of tiny needles. You roll it over your skin and it creates tiny, microscopic holes in the skin. The theory is if you slightly, slightly injure your skin it will induce your skin to produce more collagen and reduce scars and wrinkles. It has been shown on the The Doctors and Rachel Ray shows and its all over Youtube etc (not that any of these are reliable, but I do trust The Doctors show more than the rest of course!). Creating these tiny holes is also supposed to help topical products penetrate deeper. So I bought into the hype and bought one. It’s only been a couple of weeks and I’ve used it three times. I use one of the smalles...

I want to try products like Burts Bee’s Avocado Butter pre shampoo treatment, but i don’t want to waste my money. I’ve heard great things about it, but to me it would seem like I would just be washing out all of the beneficial ingredients.

First it was regular shampoo, then it was no poo ( washing your hair with conditioner), and now it’s pre-poo. What’s next post-poo?
What is pre-poo?
The idea of protecting your hair by loading it up with oily materials before shampooing actually makes some sense. (There’s a similar approach in skin care called “super-fatting.”) If you saturate the hair with oil, it will “overwhelm” your shampoo to some degree and ...

The Right Brain responds:
They way we look at it, clear mascara and eye brow gel are pretty much the same thing.
How does eye brow gel work?
First of all, clear mascara is different than regular mascara. Regular mascara is wax based and is designed to thicken and color your lashes. Maybelline Clear Lash, on the other hand, consists of base of water and alcohol, thickened with a chemical called Carbomer, and a film forming agent called PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) that gives your lashes some stif...

I was thrilled to find a grocery store product at a reasonable price that contains no formaldehyde or other -hyde ingredients. I bought it, tried it, and loved the product. It did a very good job of decreasing frizz and relaxing my kinky hair into smooth loose curls. However, I’m reluctant to try it again because I can’t find out much about one of the first ingredients, oxoacetamide. The instructions contain some strong wording about ventilating the area where the treatment is performed, which adds to my concern that there is some pretty harmful stuff in there. Is this product safe for regular use? Or sh...

Happy Independence Day to all our American readers! To celebrate we’ll travel back in time and take a peek at cosmetic science around the time of the American Revolution.
Do It Yourself Cosmetics
If you’re interested in learning what life was like in colonial America, you can find an excellent summary at Fortklock.com; the details of how women made their own makeup was particularly fascinating. Believe me, they didn’t have much to work with! Here’s a quick comparison of colonial chemistry to our modern day magic.
Lip color
Then: Mix beet juice with lard.
Now: Something in a nice pinkish-taupe like NARS Turkish Delight!
Blush
Then: Either pinch your cheeks or, for the cultured sophisticate, mix beet juice with talc or cornstarch. (Jeez, those colonials were really bi...

Tanya wants to know (via FaceBook)…Hi! I just read an article about sun protection written by a pro in cosmetology. Speaking about ways to protect skin with couperose in summer she highly recommended Pevonia Botanica RS2 Concentrate but for me this is a really pricey product. Could you guys explain why she says it is good, what the active ingredients are, and – what’s most important – what the alternative/cheaper cosmetic products for couperose are?
The Left Brain replies:
Thanks for being a Facebook Fan, Tanya. But before I address your question about Pevonia Botanica RS2 Concentrate I’d like to raise another question: What exactly is “couperose skin?”
What is couperose?
Surprisingly, this question was harder to answer than I expected. The only references I c...

It’s not acne! I’ve been using Guinot anti-redness treatment but it doesn’t seem like its working these bumps are really worrying me. Also I have some small faint delicate multi-wrinkles up there are there any wrinkle cream suitable for 16 years old? I don’t want to be 60 and none of the wrinkle creams would work on me cause when I was little I was so accustomed to heavy creams.

The Left Brain responds:
As our Forum members were quick to point out, making your own Humectress may not be such a great money saving idea.
Problems with Home Made Humectress
1. Ingredient expense
It’s difficult (maybe impossible?) to get the ingredients you need at a low cost without buying large quantities. Cosmetic companies enjoy low costs that the average person could never achieve because they buy TONS of chemicals. Plus, some ingredients are not even available for sale to the general public in any quantity...

Frieda’s 3 Day Straight works by using silicone to coat your hair (#1 on our list of 7 straighteners). The Left Brain responds:
1. What are the basic types of ingredients in blush, (powder, cream, gel, liquid, mineral powder, etc.)?
Blush has a variety of ingredients including colorants, extenders, perfumes, preservatives, feel enhancers, oil absorbers, binding agents, spreading agents, and base powders.
2. How do these ingredients work to bring that flush to your cheeks?
There are 2 types of colorants. One type provides the color, the other masks your natural color. Things like mica and titanium dioxide can block out your natural color and allow the cosmetic color to be more noticeable.
3. What are the differences in ingredients and form...

The latest trend in nail polish products are “crackle glazes” that give your nails an artsy shattered look. Both OPI and China Glaze are featuring these new glazes in their Spring collections. Today we talk about how these new polishes create this cool new look.
How does ChinaGlaze crackle polish work?
Crackling is a 3 step process. In the first step you apply a traditional base coat and let it dry completely. The second step is where the magic occurs: you apply the crackle layer over the base coat. In as little as 3 to 5 minutes the fissures form. Use a thin layer for a finely fractured pattern and a thick layer for a more chunky look. In the third step you apply a gloss coat that smooths the surface and adds shine.
What’s the magic in crackle glaze?

This article explains why high temperature styling is bad for hair and tells you where to buy products with the best ingredients to protect your hair from heat.
Why heat is bad for hair?
Heat exposure causes three types of hair damage: 1) decomposition of hair pigment (melanin) which cause changes in hair coloration; 2) damage to the fiber surface which makes the hair feel rough and look dull, and 3) weakening of internal hair proteins which can result in increased breakage. These effects are greatest when hair is exposed to temperatures above 130C. Blow dryers, curling, and flat irons are all capable of inflicting significant heat damage.
How do heat protection products work?
No one knows for sure, but here are three possible theories to explain how heat protection products work:

The Left Brain responds:
Under normal circumstances washing your hands thoroughly with good old bar soap and water is all you need to remove removing bacteria. So the answer is, no, you don’t need to spend more on antibacterial products. In fact, Right Brain has even blogged before about how antibacterial soaps can actually make you sick. But a new study shows that even regular soap can be hazardous to your health.
Soapy Sales
Discovery News reports that liquid soap dispensers can harbor potentially harmful bacteria. That’s because these containers are rarely cleaned and over time enough microbes can build up to overwhelm the preservative system of the liquid soap.
What it is: The Healthy Deodorant by Lavanila Laboratories
What’s in it: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Alpha-Glucan oligosaccharide (sugar derived), carrageenan, goji berry, valerian, corn starch, and more – the full list of ingredients varies depending on the scent.
What’s not in it: Aluminum, petrochemicals, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oils, silicone, synthetic dyes, sulfates, or parabens.
What it feels like: A little rough going on — the bar is really solid, and pressing hard to apply can be painful to sensitive or razor-burned skin — but once it’s on, you’ll be dry and happy and vanilla-scented.
What it smells like: The bad news? You’re out of luck if you don’t like vanilla. The five available scents — Vanilla Passion Fruit, Vanilla ...

Women Stare Into the Mirror for 5 Days a Year? Here Are 5 Things We'd Rather Do

A tad self-involved, are we? New research shows that the average woman spends the equivalent of five days gazing at her own reflection in a mirror.
How much time do you spend staring at yourself? It usually feels like we leave the house after about 30 seconds of glancing in the mirror to make sure we don’t have any sleep in our eyes, but we’ll admit that sometimes we primp longer than necessary. Five days is a long time, though — we could be doing other things that are a lot more fun (and productive) than staring into the mirror. Here are five things we’d rather be doing for five days of the year:
1. Go on vacation. We’ll take a mirror-less, five-day vacation, preferably in a tropical paradise.
2. Start to learn an instrument. We know that five d...

Look, people. I try to be environmentally-conscious whenever and however I can. I take a lot of public transportation. I politely refuse receipts. I recycle. I set the bedroom A/C to “energy-saver.” I fall for the expensive, eco-friendly beauty and cleaning products. I use those ugly, energy-efficient light bulbs. I give stuff away instead of tossing it. I grow an herb and vegetable garden during the summer. I buy Energy-Star appliances. I severely limit pre-packaged foods and take-out meals. (Except lunches in the office. I am a terrible person.) I do all these things with you in mind. I hardly ever even do my precious favorite thing anymore: Take a bath. I’m a friggin’ saint. So please, environment, or Mother Nature, or whoever’s in charge out...

It’s easy to judge women (and men) who opt for plastic surgery or liposuction, just because we think we’d never do it. But we’re still young-ish. How can we be sure we won’t change our minds later on? Of course, there’s no way we want end up looking like the current Courteney Cox or Christa Miller from ABC’s Cougar Town, or Lisa Rinna (what the hell were they thinking?), but maybe we’d just need to find a better plastic surgeon. Or maybe no matter how expert the hands are that hold the scalpel, plastic surgery just never turns out well in the long run. So would you take the risk? Either way, take our anonymous poll:

And if you have had plastic surgery and/or liposuction, tell us about your experience...

Today the world is rapidly developing day by day and so are the people trying to merge with the only constant thing in the world that is change. They are mostly devoted to improve their appearance through skin treatment.
There is an old thought that face is the mirror of one’s mind so the people are giving more emphasis on facial therapy so as to look more attractive. Clothes don’t make a man so there is no much use of wearing expensive clothes rather than taking care of the skin and body.
Skin care has become an inevitable part of the modern life. There are several products available in the market for all age groups. A person aged 40 should not try the ones which are applicable on a 20 year old.
Rather the mid aged person must use products like anti aging cream that will turn you look...

It’s such a pain to buy new blades for your razor. They’re expensive and it’s just wasteful to buy a new, heavily packaged box several times a year. A German company could have a solution to tossing out the blade every few weeks — synthetic diamonds. The Diamaze PSA has a tungsten carbide blade that is coated in a film of man-made, industrial-grade diamonds.
The blade is supposed to last 1,000 times longer than a typical steel blade — it could last years. They would cost a lot more than conventional blades, but since they last so long, you’d save money in the long run. We’ll be eagerly awaiting the Diamaze PSA’s arrival into the retail world.

I’m not into body products that smell like food. Taking a bath in sugar cookie flavored bubble soap does not make me feel like I’ve indulged. Which is why I was skeptical of the Indigo Bee soaps that we received from our partners at OpenSky.
Yes, the soaps looked nice. They were brightly colored and marbled, and I couldn’t help thinking that they would look particularly cute on my new bathroom vanity. And I was intrigued by the ingredients. Indigo Bee soaps are biodegradable, and paraben- and sulfate-free, and are made from a mix of coconut oil, palm oil, and olive oil, and many contain jojoba, avocado and sweet almond oils.
I know you’re dying to know — how did the soap smell? Well, it smelled good. The scents are subtle enough so tha...

Perfume commercials are always corny or pretentious. But this one, from 1985, reaches a new high on the cheesiness scale. Maybe it’s post-modernism or deconstructionism or existentialism. Or maybe it’s just hilarious. Man. Calvin Klein commercials really used to make you think.

Hear that? It’s the sound of the weekend calling your name. We’re getting goosebumps of excitement. Here are ten things you’ll find us doing over the next two days:

Rethink our shampoo choice.
Our old brands are full of harsh chemicals, and we’re guessing eco-friendly brands smell just as good – or better.

Continue our crafting.
Last week we tried crocheting, and this weekend we’ll try our hand at knitting.

Take all day to plan a beautiful meal.
We’ll definitely be sure to take some photos, too. We’re sure the food will look amazing, but we also want proof that we slaved in a hot kitchen all day.

Give up Coke for the weekend.
We don’t know about you, but we’re getting a little freaked out about the possible side effects. We&#8...

As Eco Salon points out, you’d be hard pressed to find a girl who cares about the environment, but doesn’t care at all about how her skin looks. That’s where Kaia Naturals’ Bamboo Facial Cleanser Cloths come in. These eco-friendly beauty bombshells are made from 100% soft, sustainable bamboo, and contain cleanser, toner, and eye makeup remover – and they don’t require water.
Here’s what the cloths don’t contain: alcohol, synthetic fragrances, parabens, or sulfates. Where can you get these supposedly miracle wipes? Why, right here.

If you’ve been keeping up with Blisstree, you know that we’re not fans of the “fragrance” ingredient found in many perfumes and soaps. If you haven’t been keeping up with us, please leave now. Just kidding – we’ll bring you up to speed. When you see “fragrance” on the back of your perfume bottle, you are spraying chemicals on yourself that are linked to hormone disruptions and allergic reactions. Are conscientious consumers destined to an odorless existence?
A recent New York Times article, “Making Flowers Into Perfume,” shared the secret of natural, DIY perfumers, with instructions for making your own non-toxic perfume:

Happy World Oceans Day! This day has been celebrated since 1992 and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, but it’s hard to celebrate this year with the entire Gulf covered in BP’s oil spill.
To celebrate, and help with the Gulf oil spill cleanup, Depth is donating $1 from every one of its personal care products purchased at Whole Foods Market to the National Audubon Society for Gulf oil spill recovery from now until June 15.
Depth’s line of personal care products, pictured below, is 70% organic, 100% vegetarian, hypoallergenic, and paraben-free. Depth isn’t only helping the oceans with its gift to the National Audubon Society; it also contains natural botanicals and sea minerals, and is free of artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, ...

Check out more of our exclusive video chat with Piper Kerman here, where she talks about staying fit behind bars.

At age 34, Piper Kerman went to federal prison for a ten-year-old drug smuggling and money laundering offense. She spent 13 months in a minimum-security correctional facility for women in Danbury, CT, which isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Smith graduate and Red Sox fan from a nice, New England family.
Piper’s excellent memoir about her prison experience, Orange Is the New Black, was just published by Random House – with back cover blurbs by Dave Eggers and Elizabeth Gilbert (not bad for a first-time writer).
Piper sat down with Blisstree for the afternoon to discuss all aspects of her time in the clink, from skincare in prison...
