I love meetups.
I will do almost anything in my power to get to them. I missed a group meeting on Monday night, which bummed me out a bit, but couldn’t be helped.
Last night was a different story though. I spent a few hours visiting with Dean, Mike, and MissItaly. I loved it (as usual).
Scott, Dean, Mike (with MissItaly behind the camera)
And I didn’t even have to travel out of state for this one!
This little social get-together is one of three groups I attend regularly. There is one in Woodbury, MN, affiliated with the HealthEast system (you don’t need to be seen there to come, but you have to be diabetic or love one of us…(hi Diane!). There is another in the Bloomington, MN area, called AWTO (Adults With Type One) that is put together by a couple JDRF vo...

Earlier this year, Becky McClain, a scientist who claims she was infected by an experimental virus while working at Pfizer’s Groton laboratories, was awarded $1.37 million by a federal jury (see here). Last month, she discussed her firing for making OSHA complaints and also the potential and real dangers of unregulated development of products in the biotech and nanotech industry without proper oversight.

Do you recall the case of Becky McClain? She was a Pfizer scientist who claims she was infected by an experimental virus while working at the drugmaker’s Groton, Ct., labs and was awarded $1.37 million by a federal jury (back story and her lawsuit). Workers’ rights groups hailed the verdict and called the decision a major milestone for biotech and nanotech workers everywhere.
Why? There is growing concern that the estimated 232,000 people who work in biotech labs around the US face numerous hazards and inadequate federal safety regulations. The New York Times cites some examples: an Agriculture Department scientist who spent a month in a coma after being infected by the E. coli bacteria her colleagues were experimenting with, and a University of Chicago scientist died after apparently ...

Workers’ rights groups hailed the verdict, and said the outcome of the federal civil suit was a major milestone for biotech and nanotech workers everywhere, The Day writes.
“If this could happen at the biggest drug company in the world, it could happen in other plants,” Steve Zeltzer, chair of the California Coalition For Workers Memorial Day, a group that advocates for employees hurt on the job, tells the paper. “It’s a vindication of the courage shown by Becky to confront the need to do a proper oversight of the biotech industry.”
The three-week trial was closely followed becau...

A trial gets under way today involving a former Pfizer biologist who claims she was illegally fired for claiming she was intermittently paralyzed by a genetically engineered virus to which she was exposed, and the proceedings are being closely watched because the alleged incident raises questions about safety practices in genetic engineering, The Hartford Courant writes.
Organizations involved in workplace safety and responsible genetic research say the lawsuit filed by Becky McClain is an example of what they claim is evidence that risks caused by genetic manipulation have outstripped more slowly evolving government regulation of laboratories, the paper continues. McClain suspects she was inadvertently exposed, through work by a former Pfizer colleague, to an engineered form of the lentiv...

Three years ago, molecular biologist Becky McClain sued Pfizer, claiming she was infected by an unknown virus at the drugmaker’s Groton, Ct., labs. And next month her trial begins, giving her the chance to prove that Pfizer violated whistleblower laws, exposed her to a hazardous workplace and violated her freedom of speech by firing her after she pursued her workplace complaints.
McClain, who worked at Pfizer for nearly a decade before being terminated in 2005, was employed in an embryonic stem cells program when she became ill after allegedly being subjected to noxious fumes coming from the hood of a device at her lab. Her supervisor also became ill, but later conspired to cover up the incident, warning her that she “would lose her job if she made too big an issue out of lab s...
