On the NPR Shots blog, Scott Hensley reports: “This Just In: Fake News Is No Way To Sell Acai Berries.” Excerpt:
“Some marketers of weight-loss products containing acai berries are also purveyors of news you shouldn’t use, the Federal Trade Commission says.
The FTC has asked federal courts to put a stop to the activities of 10 different outfits that the commission alleges use “fake news websites” to tout acai berry weight-loss products.
Chances are you’ve stumbled across the sites, which often sport the logos of major mainstream news organizations, such as ABC, CNN and Consumer Reports. (See this example posted by the FTC.)
Take, for example the FTC’s complaint against Beony International LLC, a company based in San Diego.
The company alleged...

One of our readers suggested that I review the book The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History, by John M. Barry. It’s not a new book (it was published in 2004) but it is very pertinent to several of the issues that we have been discussing on this blog, especially in regards to the current anti-vaccine movement. It’s well worth reading for its historical insights, for its illumination of the scientific method, and for its accurate reporting of what science has learned about influenza.
In the great flu epidemic of 1918, influenza killed as many people in 24 weeks as AIDS has killed in 24 years. It’s hard to even imagine what that must have been like, but this book helps us imagine it. It tells horror stories: Children found alone and starving beside the cor...

The New York Times published an article (with VIDEO) about molecular animators, scientists who can visualize the microscopic segments of life in a professional way:
If there is a Steven Spielberg of molecular animation, it is probably Drew Berry, a cell biologist who works for the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia. Mr. Berry’s work is revered for artistry and accuracy within the small community of molecular animators, and has also been shown in museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2008, his animations formed the backdrop for a night of music and science at the Guggenheim Museum called “Genes and Jazz.”

If you’re one of millions who can’t fully function without a cup of coffee in the morning, you might want to rethink your driving habits. The coffee berry borer beetle thrives in warm weather, which the world is seeing a lot more of lately. When the temperatures in South America climb, the beetle is able to spread to more locations, destroying coffee crops along the way.
Farmers haven’t yet found a way to kill the pest, so for now, coffee drinkers should do their best to work against climate change and global warming. Would you make your life a little greener to save your much-loved cup of Joe?

A great video from Face The Issue about abuse narrated by Halle Berry.
The following is an anonymous quote from a victim of abuse.
..when I’m being beat, just hit, or shouted at.
Been bullied by mam all my life, which is probably a factor.
With a few people I almost wanted them to hurt me, usually people I love. I wanted to be told. I really have no idea why, of course I want to be treated good and that, but theres just that underlying need to be hurt. I feel like I deserve it.
Aye, I feel like sh!t about it, even now when other people shout at me or raise their hand(it’s only been once or twice), I almost always cut after. With other people, it isn’t rage though, just sadness.

Unless you live under a rock, recently you’ve probably seen headlines involving the “Oscar Curse.” What kind of gossip are the tabloids spreading now? Let’s walk with the Ghost of Best Actress Past. We’ll start today, just over two weeks following Sandra Bullock’s Oscar win for The Blind Side, and less than a week after Jesse James, her husband of five years, issued a public apology for cheating. Simultaneously, Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes publicly announced their split, a year after she collected her BA statue from the Academy for The Reader.
This is a tough road, but let’s keep going. Reese Witherspoon was named best actress in 2005 (Walk the Line); she finalized her divorce with Ryan Phillipe in October 2006. Hillary Sw. was on top in 20...

I think that I have mentioned before that I have been experimenting with my diet for the last year in an effort to improve my Crohn’s symptoms. I have eliminated all dairy products and now use only Rice milk because it causes the least amount of trouble and tastes good. I am also limiting the amount of gluten that I eat. I still eat some items that have a little bit of gluten, but have for the most part deleted that out of my diet too. I also don’t eat a lot of fiber because it seems to make matters worse. Once you get rid of dairy, gluten and fiber, there are not a lot of choices left for breakfast.
For the last year, I have been eating Trix for breakfast. I recently discovered Berry Berry Kix and have switched to that instead because it has a lot less sugar. I don...

Halle Berry caused all kinds of hoopla not too long ago when she stated that she had “weaned herself off” of insulin. She said she had Type 1 diabetes and now had Type 2 diabetes.
Well, we know that you cannot change the type of diabetes you have. Obviously Halle was misdiagnosed originally. If she’s living without insulin, quite simply she is Type 2.
Here’s the interview she did with James Lipton from Inside the Actor’s Studio when she revealed this:

While I think it’s great when celebrities come forward to talk about diabetes (as Nick Jonas did recently), it can also be a negative thing if the celebrity is misinformed about the disease.
Hopefully Halle realizes her mistake and now corrects this information in interviews.

I look forward to it and think it will be fun. Who doesn’t want to know about Ms. Halle Berry being diabetic while pregnant or David Wells playing professional baseball with diabetes.
Look for all my celebrity posts starting Monday June 9th-Saturday June 14th.

Today Robyn and I had a wonderful lunch in Fairport’s Bocaccinni Italian Bistro with Don and Carol Henderson. I’d asked to hear more about MONA-VIE … a drink Don and Carol sell, and Oprah lists as the world’s No 1 super-food. Specific benefits are described at the official MonaVie distributor information page.Over lunch … we shared MITA stories about the human brain’s capabilities and listened to Don and Carol’s amazing tales about MonaVie’s freeze-dried Acai berries. By the way … I’m told that’s pronounced ah-sigh-eee … and it’s a name worth remembering. Life is good with this antioxidant-rich acai berry drink! Toss in 19 fruits and I’m told you’ll have just what your brain craves to fight illnes...

Halle Berry: Poster Girl for MODY?

There's been a huge outcry online now that Halle Berry, previously a poster girl for Type 1 diabetes, has told the press that she has been able to wean herself off insulin. A lot of people with Type 1 diabetes are very upset with this for the very understandable reason that it is impossible to go insulin if you have Type 1 diabetes unless you get an experimental pancreas or beta cell transplant--and even those are iffy. So there are a lot of people with Type 1 who are feeling betrayed and that is making for a lot of anger. In fact, what happened to Berry has happened to quite a few people who have emailed me over the years since I put up my web page about monogenic diabetes (MODY). None of them are TV or movie stars, so their experiences didn't hit the media. But all of them were diagnosed...

Ms. Halle Berry Really Stepped In Some Diabetic Hot Water…

Ok, so I was correct a few weeks back when I wrote about Halle Berry being a type 2 diabetic. And it seems that even though she has been a type 2 diabetic for quite some time, it doesn’t mean she is a very swift diabetic… It seems that Ms. Berry has ticked off many diabetics in the world.
Take this with a grain of salt. As I have told you before I love celebrity news so I found this while searching one of my fave websites, as embarrassing as it is… Perez Hilton. Yes, I am THAT person.

The actress has been quoted saying that she was a Type 1 diabetic but now she has been able to ween herself off insulin to be a Type 2. SOMETHING THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Pregnant HALLE BERRY is winning her battle with diabetes, thanks to a healthy diet and good living. The actress was...

Medicare Should Haggle Over Price: Dems

This is the latest attack on Medicare Part D by the Democratic Party. A bill was introduced today to empower Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers and make greater use of evidence about safety and effectiveness. The legislation was trumpeted by two consumer groups, Consumers Union and the Medicare Rights Center, as an alternative to Medicare Part D, which they lambasted as “dysfunctional,” due to cost, coverage gaps and consumer exposure to marketing fraud thanks to divergent benefit packages.
The idea is to create an alternative to privately run programs. “Under current law, Medicare beneficiaries are stuck with confusing, costly plans designed by insurance and drug companies. What seniors deserve is an affordable, straightforward drug benefit,” Durbin says in a s...

Did You Know That Pregnant Star Halle Berry Was A Diabetic?

Did you know that Halle Berry was a type 2 diabetic since she was 23 years old? I didn’t. I was reading the good ol’ People magazine tonight and saw the news that she was pregnant. And that man of hers… handsome indeed!
But getting back to the diabetes thing, she was diagnosed almost 20 years ago and has done very well with diet and exercise control. As we all know diabetes puts a crinkle in anything and pregnancy is no different. So I wish her luck in keeping her diabetes under control as her hormones soar into high gear. And we also know that a healthy, happy pregnancy is very possible with diabetes as long as we keep on top of sugar changes and fluctuations as the pregnancy progresses.
Did anyone have any major issues while they were pregnant? Was everything smooth sa...

Continuing to Analyze Results of the Berry

Test of Visual Motor Integration

In Blog #1 I mentioned testing procedures for the Berry. In Blog #2 I went over clinical observations for copying forms 1 - 4. To continue on in what to look for in these drawings lets pick up at the 5th template. This is a right oblique. Usually difficulties here indicate a spatial orientation problem. Number 6, a square shows directionality difficulties if the corners aren't sharp or fine motor problems if the lines extend too far at the corners. For number 7 a left oblique again spatial orientation will be the essential challenge. The "X" shows spatial orientation difficulties as well as possible midline concerns (if the lines don't cross smoothly in the center). The triangle will challenge skills in visual closure if the corners don't come together. ...
