Betty Ford, the former First Lady of the United States died Friday at the age of 93. Dr. William Van Ornum gives this succinct summary of her life in a tribute on the website of the American Mental Health Foundation (AMHF):
Mrs. Ford was born in Chicago, grew up in modest circumstances, became a dancer, and married Mr. Ford shortly after he returned from the Navy in World War II. She thought she was signing up for a life with a mid-western lawyer; instead he chose politics and she was thrust into the role of a political wife, all the while raising 4 children and trying to keep her own interests as well.
Political life became difficult for her and she felt an emptiness inside from which she sought solace in alcohol and prescription pills. She was open about her addiction at a time when othe...

I’m having breakfast this morning at the Philadelphia International Airport after spending yesterday evening with an incredible group of fellow PWD’s (Persons With Diabetes).
My four-dollar bagel and soda didn’t come with enough cream cheese, but I feel kind of stuck. The bagel itself is HUGE (60-80 grams of carbs?), but the cream cheese container is regular size. Enough for maybe half of the bagel. I don’t want to leave my seat & table to get more, and I really don’t want to carry all of my crap back up to the counter with me to get more. So I’ll eat my lightly topped bagel and be glad it didn’t cost more I guess.
The group last night was really something special. I don’t know if it is my appreciation for others living with type 1 diabe...

Here’s a news flash for you — people like sex. Even older people. Wow, what an astounding insight into human behavior.
I think some people have this conception that older people are somehow, like, not normal. Like they don’t have all the same needs, wants and desires as a younger person does. Like aging itself is some sort of disorder or disease that needs separate studying and understanding.
I’ll let you in on a little secret — most older folks don’t feel their age. Most middle-age folks don’t feel their age. Once you hit 25 or so, many people (most?) seem “stuck in time” in terms of their own self-image and what they imagine others see them as. Most people simply don’t seem to feel their chronological age.

So your grandparents ...

Three years after FDA medical reviewer Rosemary Johann-Liang left the agency amid controversy over her work on GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia diabetes pill, she’s back in the news. Now, Johann-Liang is telling laywers, who are suing the drugmaker, how a study was withheld from the FDA showing a link to heart attacks, Bloomberg News writes.
The 2001 study, according to a deposition cited by the news service, found Avandia posed a greater risk than other diabetes meds. What’s more, she claims Glaxo also failed to provide the FDAS with an e-mail from researchers who found Avandia “strengthens the signals” for heart problems while, at the same time, FDA officials gave Glaxo details of internal agency discussions about enhancing Avandia warnings, which she told the lawy...

Relationships: 5 Dating Rules to Break

Waiting by the phone? Lame. Just call him.
Dating is confusing, so we make up rules to follow. Amid the chaos of trying to interpret texts, voicemails, and morning-after behavior, there are feelings to be hurt, so we like to give ourselves some safety rails. Problem is, even though dating rules are meant to help us succeed, we don’t always think they’re true, or that they apply to everyone. Whether you’re a Sandy Olsson-type or a true Betty Rizzo, we think it’s time to grow up and break these dating-rule dinosaurs:
1. Men Should Always Pay. We call bullshit. If someone – anyone – invites us to a specific restaurant or event, sure, we’d like them to pay. Same goes if we do the inviting. There’s nothing wrong with someone paying for your meal, but we b...

And so Betty McCollum, a Democrat from Minnesota, has introduced a bill that prohibits companies with a felony conviction from receiving any federal funding for five years after a conviction; prohibits corporate felons from making federal campaign contributions for five years, and limits the lobbying the corporation can do during that period to $1 million.
She calls her legislation the ACORN Act, or Against Corporations Organizing to Rip-off the Nation Act of 2009. Why? A significant target of recent Congr...

~ La Leche League co-founder Betty Wagner Spandikow passed away last weekend. She served as Executive Director of LLL for many years, and I was particularly impressed by this about her:
Betty initiated flex hours and a family-friendly workplace in the ’60s, long before they became the popular perks they are today. Business hours at the La Leche League International office were set to allow mothers to be home with their children after school. Betty’s ideas about work teams and home offices were also far ahead of their time.
Keep in mind that year-end donations to LLL are being matched by generous donors, so it would be a lovely tribute to Betty to make a donation in her honor.

She’s no Betty Ford.In 1989, Cindy McCain had back surgery for ruptured disks. By her own admission, she became addicted to powerful painkillers—Vicodin and Percocet. Mrs. McCain spoke openly on television about her addiction, which had culminated in 1992 with an intervention staged by her parents. She told Jay Leno on the “Tonight Show” that she wanted to talk about the experience as often as possible, “because I don’t want anyone to wind up in the shoes that I did at the time.” She also penned a column about her addiction for Newsweek in 2001, and did an interview for Harper’s Bazaar. As it turns out, however, Mrs. McCain’s openness about her addiction may have been the involuntary result of a yearlong DEA investigation into her drug use. Moreover, it is far from clear t...

These concerns followed multiple complaints from patients about side effects on the new formulation. In addition, all excipients and excipient quantities present in the new formulation are commonly used in medicines."GSK stated that"extensive testing and retesting by GSK has shown that the tablets should be safe and effective when used as prescribed"However in response to my communications Medsafe refused to discuss what...

Recent problems with Eltroxin in New Zealand raise memories of a landmark scandal involving the researcher Betty Dong. Eltroxin is the brand name for levothyroxine (also known as thyroxine) as produced by GlaxoSmithKline. First some historyIn 1990, Betty Dong, a researcher at UCSF was funded by Boots Pharmaceuticals to carry out research to compare Boots thyroxine (Synthroid) and generic alternatives of the same drug (thyroxine). She discovered that the Boots drug was no more effective than three cheaper competitor products available at that time. When she tried to publish, Boots threatened to sue. Dong withdrew the publication from the JAMA publication process under conditions of legal threats. UCSF failed to uphold academic integrity or to provide Dong with any support.
Normally my next post would be on Wednesday, but this one couldn’t wait. One thing survivors can do is unite! We do it for breast cancer walks, we do it to raise money for research, we do it to support each other and we can do it to nominate one of our own for “America’s Favorite Mom.”
Betty Yerkes is the mother of Amy Yerkes, the woman who invited us this past February to participate in her study at Adelphi University on the emotional impact of a breast cancer diagnosis. Amy nominated her mom, and Betty made it all the way to the semi-finals. Betty’s story is so like any one of our stories; she was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago and is a survivor for the most part because she opted for a mastectomy. Betty is also the creator of BirthRight and provided emotional and...
