Ah, men. Can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em, right? Well it also seems we can’t get a good night’s sleep with them either. A survey conducted by the British Lung Foundation found that 41% of women cite their male partners’ snoring as the main reason they are kept up at night, resulting in sleep deprivation. According to the figures, this translates to a third of all women losing an average of three weeks’ sleep every year. I usually enjoy being kept up at night by my man, but this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind (wink wink). Luckily, there are ways to still get your shut-eye and save your relationship, without shaming him to the couch.
Get him to a doctor: medical experts warn that snoring is usually symptomatic of larger hea...

If you like food, nutrition, and helping people live well you should be at FNCE!
Day two (Sunday) was so much fun! I love nutrition, talking about nutrition, and I really LOVE hanging out with other people who do too. My day started off with a wake-up workout with my two counterparts in my Peer Support Group Wendy Jo – Fuelin’ Roadie and Leslie Schilling. Now, these girls are married to some seriously athletic men. One is a Navy Seal and the other is a top exercise science speaker and professor. Bottom line: They know their way around a weight room. They gave this runner a serious butt-whooping.
We then headed for a full recovery breakfasts – eggs, bacon, toast, juice. It was so filling — and thank goodness because my lunch ended up being tiny exhibit floor tastes...

When you think of naturally, ahem, big-boned animals, we bet elephants leap to mind first. Have you ever seen a skinny elephant? No, because they don’t exist. But zookeepers in Fresno, California put two elephants on a strict diet to help them lose weight and live longer. And together, these Biggest Loser bruisers have lost 2,175 pounds. (News that would no doubt bring Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels to tears.)
The zookeepers didn’t know that the elephants were overweight until they had enough money to buy a scale. Now, these formerly pudgy pachyderms eat healthy foods including fruits and vegetables, and keep to an exercise routine. While we wouldn’t call the tusked behemoths shapely (that’s just weird, Seattle Times), these guys most likely have ...

With season nine of The Biggest Loser wrapped up, you may be wondering where you can get your latest BL fix. Cheryl Forberg, RD, the show’s dietitian, has a book out — Six Weeks to a Healthier You — which focuses on quality foods that provide a powerhouse of nutrients for the calories.
In this video, Cheryl shares one of her recipes from the book, a Grilled Shrimp Salad with an Avocado Aioli The avocado aioli has over 20 vitamins and minerals and the “good” fats – heart healthy, unsaturated fats. With help from avocados and greek yogurt, the luscious and creamy quality of the aioli gives you a nutrient dense alternative to the typical bottled creamy dressing high in saturated fat.

As a dietitian, I am well aware of where people get their health information. By and large, people search the Internet, read blogs (like this one), watch the news, and read books and magazines. There is no shortage of information available and books especially seem to carry a layer of credibility. That’s why I think it is crucial that when I find a book I love, I need to shout it from the rooftops! The Biggest Loser Simple Swaps, by the show’s dietitian and chef Cheryl Forberg, is one such book. In this post, I’ll share why you should run (not walk) to pick up your copy today.
Next Best Thing to Being There

As a dietitian, people always want to know what they can do to eat well. Healthful eating is easy if you focus on choosing foods that have good nutrition for the calories. By filling your shopping cart with a variety of vegetables and fruits, you can be sure you are getting a good nutrition “bang for your buck.” I love avocados, with nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in a one-ounce (3 slice) serving, and I’m excited to be working with Avocados from Mexico.
Watch this video to learn why avocados are tops on my “nutrition list” and get a few ideas for including avocados in easy to make meals and snacks.

I am dedicating my blogs this week to tips for how you can get The Biggest Loser experience at home. As the experts behind the show explain, one of the reasons the people lose so much weight consistently is because of their new environment. But you can change your environment at home, too. Biggest Loser success is within everyone’s reach. Earlier this week, I blogged about how you can change your nutrition and exercise environments, today I’m going to review a series of important behavior changes that will help you lose weight with the contestants.
Since the first season, experts behind the scenes of the show found the contestants shared many characteristics, which I listed below along with tips for changes you can make along with the contestants:

One of the things I think makes this show unique is that more people watch it for inspiration rather than entertainment. As a nutrition and fitness expert who tunes in religiously, I get tons of questions about my impressions of the show. My favorite is the epiphanies and “a-ha” moments people experience on camera. You can tell they’ve reached the point of no return. The new behaviors they pick up on the show help them add years to their life and life to their years. Could there be a better “prize” than that?
What’s so special about “the ranch” that allows the transformations to occur? In a word, environment. One of the reasons the people lose so much weight consistently is because of their new environment. All the barriers that usually exist to behavior change (job, life s...

Once again contestants are being screened and treated for obstructive sleep apnea.“I have put in place a new policy that all contestants need to undergo a sleep study in future seasons,” the show’s medical expert Dr. Rob Huizenga said in a Philips Respironics statement. “The results have been astonishing after two seasons of testing.”All 16 contestants were diagnosed with sleep apnea during preparations for the new season.
Fans of ‘The Biggest Loser’ reality series looking to lose weight will be pleased to hear that the doctor behind the program, Dr Robert Huizenga, has written a book “Where Did All The Fat Go” to guide them on their weight loss.
But if you plan on following his action plan, be ready to sweat.
Huizenga’s weight loss program focuses on large quantities of jogging daily and a strict balanced eating plan. According to him, the body has to work at 120% 7 days a week in order to lose the fat. To do this, anyone looking to lose weight needs to exercise at least 2 hours a day.
There is no time to rest.
As for the type of exercise, the book focuses primarily on walking and jogging as the two best ways to lose the fat.
It’s a program that has merits but be advised, it’s not suitable f...

Mandi Kramer
I am thrilled to bring you this interview with “mom” (and former Biggest Loser contestant) Mandi Kramer. Ever feel like you are superwoman? Trying to juggle the needs of your kids, spouse, friends, and other family members? It’s a wonder you get ANY work done. Exercise and eating healthy seem more like a pipe dream. Of course you “want” to do it, but who has the time? You put yourself last over and again and sooner or later your behaviors catch up with you… and you’re frustrated, scared, or worried that things have spun out of control and you’re not sure how to get your life back.
Chances are, if this is not you, it is someone you know. So make sure they get to read this interview with Mandi Kramer. You may remember from the fina...

During the Finale Episode for Season 7 of The Biggest Loser we continued to watch the weight loss and transformations in awe. These contestants, who broke records on set starting with Day 1, lost a combined total of 2763 lbs in 18 weeks! On average, contestants lost 37.2% of their body weight, decreasing their risk of diabetes and heart disease. According to Dr. Huizenga (MD on set), each one of them added years to their lives.
The winner was selected based off of “percentage of body weight lost”. At age 63, Jerry was named the At-Home champion, after losing 47.97% of his body weight (177 lbs) – with only two weeks on the ranch! At age 48, Helen was the Season 7 WINNER, after shedding more than half of her body weight (54.47%, 140 lbs) and showing up at a mere 117 lbs.

So I’ve been thinking about The Biggest Loser and its impact on American culture for some time. I can’t help but notice all the efforts in government and healthcare to inspire change and how little really gets done. Cross that with The Biggest Loser and you have to ask – is The Biggest Loser scalable to the population?
What I am most impressed with is the “short timer success”. Estella was only on the ranch for a week and at her age all the odds were against her. I mean, only young males lose weight right? It’s too hard to teach an old dog new tricks… maybe not!
Estella started at 242 and weighed in at 159# losing 83 pounds, 34% of her body weight.
Jerry at 63 years old started at 369 and weighs 192# now losing 47% of his body weight. He passed ou...

In this post, I’m going to talk about what I don’t Like About “The End of Overeating” by DAVID A. KESSLER, MD.
Even as I type I am annoyed with myself because I hesitate to give the book any press – even bad press! But I can’t keep these opinions bottled up. Of course, I would love to hear other opinions and see if I can’t be influenced by something else.
I will admit off the bat that I have not read one page of this book. But I’ve seen what I need to see from the media stories and PR pitches flooding my inbox.
My main “beef” with the book is that it positions the food industry as pure evil villains and consumers as powerless victims while he is the vindicator (a credible doctor we can trust) coming in to save us all with this boo...

Bernie Salazar is a MAJOR LOSER! Hs is probably one of the BIGGEST LOSERS I know… and that’s why anyone with ears should listen to what he has to say about achieving lasting health and wellness.
You see, Bernie used to have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and pre-diabetes. Then he shed 130# on the reality show The Biggest Loser (season 5) and now he runs marathons. While he may not win them (don’t worry Bernie, I don’t win either), he still fiercely competes with the only opponent that matters - himself.

I’m watching The Biggest Loser. I have to say I love this show. Always have. Props to Cheryl Forbery, RD the show’s dietitian. I wish she got more screen time.
I was surprised (and not at the same time) with the contestants being clueless to the calories in the “super bowl foods”. The guesses between them for 7-layer-dip varied from 800 to 4,500 calories!
I though the celeb chef segment was excellent. He focused on flavoring healthy foods — without fat! He took 900 calorie chicken wings and converted them to a 200 calorie dish. He spent a day with one contestant, took him to the grocery store and cooked with him.
These small changes give big reactions! The contestants realize that the fatty foods aren’t worth the calories and hard exercise especially w...

Pages: 1 2 Next » Single Page Earlier this month, the biggest weight-loss show in America — and perhaps abroad, airing in over 90 countries — “The Biggest Loser: Couples” debuted, just in time to motivate us to continue our own weight and fitness resolutions.
The Biggest Loser demonstrates that you can lose large amounts of weight and lead a healthier lifestyle without the help of surgery. That all it takes to achieve an optimal weight is hard work, sweat — and lots of tears.
It also shows us precisely how to reach short-term weight-loss, leaving us captivated with the contestants and excited to see the final results. And our excitement shows: The Biggest Loser is a ratings success and an advertiser’s dream, spawning cookbooks and workout DVDs ...

Talking about dieting and hunger in the same sentence somehow doesn’t seem right.
But what if you could lose weight and help feed the hungry at the same time?
That’s the idea behind a new campaign created by General Mills, NBC’s The Biggest Loser and the non-profit organization Feeding America.
It’s called the Pound for Pound Challenge because, for ever pound you lose, General Mills will donate 10 cents to Feeding America. That’s enough, apparently, to provide one pound of groceries to a local food bank.
Imagine all those 10 cents added together - just think of how many pounds of groceries Feeding America could provide for those without food.

All you have to do is take the pledge, start dieting (and of course exercising) and watch your lost pounds convert...

In the most recent Dental Heroes Poll, I’ve asked you to tell me whether you prefer manual or powered toothbrushes. So far, the manual brush lovers are holding a slim lead. The fact that the majority of my readers still use manual toothbrushes could be due to a number of factors. For example, manual toothbrushes are easy to use, inexpensive, comfortable, virtually cleanup-free, etc. On the other hand, most powered toothbrushes are a pain to charge, expensive, uncomfortable in the mouth, and messy. It’s easy to see why most of you prefer manual toothbrushes - heck I do even. In fact, until recently I had convinced myself that there wasn’t a single powered toothbrush on the market that would convert me to using powered toothbrushes. Well, after using the Oral-B Vitality™ ...

Any The Biggest Loser fans out there?
Did you see the October 7th episode (see video here) when trainer Jillian Michaels presented Coleen, who was minus a workout partner, with a Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD headset complete with a Motorola Wireless Workout programmed in?
Looks like a pretty nifty tool. Lighter than most sunglasses, the headset is not only stable fitting (a absolute necessity during a workout) but also has a discreet, behind-the-head-wearing style. In fact, if it wasn’t for the the high-definition surround sound music playing, you could easily forget it’s there.
It’s the perfect wireless solution for those on the go. Wherever you are, the Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD headset will keep you connected to your mp3 (or iPod) and cell phone all at the same time via B...

If you love eating out but are worried about sticking to your diet, then check out what Bernie Salazar has to say.
This ‘Biggest Loser’ reduced his body weight by 50% in six months through diet and exercise, so he can definitely ‘talk the talk’.
A Chicago Tribune reporter caught up with Bernie recently to discover how he manages to eat out once or twice a week and still manage to keep the weight off. After all, as every dieter knows, frequent restaurant visits can play havoc on your weight loss goals.
The trick, Bernie says, is to follow this tips…
- Pick the restaurant carefully.
- Don’t sacrifice taste. It doesn’t have to be bland or boring to be low in calories.
- Don’t feel guilty about what you do end up eating.
- Make smart decisions ...

Ali is the First Female Biggest Loser!

Well, we have a winner…and she’s female!
Moments ago, Ali became the first female winner ever on NBC’s The Biggest Loser. With a total of 112 pounds dropped in a 6 month period, Ali does not look the teensiest bit like her old self. She now looks fit, healthy and happy as can be.
The thing that strikes me most about Ali is her “In It To Win It” attitude. She said she was going to be the first female Biggest Loser, and by golly, she was. That seems to be a key to long-term weight loss. You have to become the person you want to be, instead of just thinking of becoming that person. To do so, of course, takes effort each day, one day at a time. Small things here and there add up to make a giant difference. And while it’s unlikely that the majority of us will...

Yeah, I’ve been watching. The Biggest Loser.
*disclaimer…the show is ok…the site…could be anorexic trigger or relapse city*
I was thinking: “Is this bad for me? They’re on a scale, they count calories…work out like maniacs….weight loss as a competition….oh_my_gawd”

I actually didn’t have much of a choice. A certain relative had become hooked on this show during the writers’ strike. So hooked, he took it upon himself to invite himself over for his “weekly big, hom...

Big day today on The Biggest Loser. Did you watch it? Here’s a recap of what happened:
* Roger set a record for the most weight lost on campus in the history of the show.
* Ali lost the most weight of any female contestant ever on the show.
* Ali and Kelly BOTH secured a shot at the top spot, making the probability of a first-time female winner quite strong.
* For the first time ever, viewers will vote who to eliminate this week, and it’s between Mark and Roger.
Lots of excitement this week, and definitely looking ahead as well. Every one of those contestants brought their A-game this week, shocking themselves and their trainers with the weight they managed to peel off so far along in the process. Truly inspiring and completely commendable.
So who do you think should be voted o...
