ICD-10 implementation is a problem that affects how physicians will practice medicine. But just how to you persuade them that they need to get involved in the training and planning now?
The first thing you do is put a physician on the ICD-10 steering committee. That physician is going to be your champion who gets his or her peers to understand and support the changes needed.

Perhaps the greatest documentary ever made is 'King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters'. It tells the incredible story of video game newbie Steve Wiebe's quixotic quest to break the 25 year-old Donkey Kong world record score held by the greatest gamer of all time, Billy Mitchell. It is also a brilliant depiction of psychopathology. (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

A Recovery Book
In this highly entertaining and literate book, Shawn Christopher Shea takes us on a provocative journey into the world of practical philosophy, applied spirituality and everyday psychology. Calling upon more than twenty years of clinical experience, fifty years of navigating life’s ups and downs, and an array of thinkers and pop icons – from Alan Watts to Albert Einstein, Billy Graham to Bob Dylan, the Dalai Lama to the English mystic Julian of Norwich – he weaves a gentle compassion and a tart wit into this compelling look at human nature and our never-ending quest for happiness.
Not content with traditional stereotypes of happiness, Shea is on a search for a tougher happiness that is present and revitalizing even during times o...

What Is The Biggest Priority For PhRMA’s New CEO?

For those spending all their time following the Avandia controversy, you can be forgiven for not realizing that PhRMA named a new ceo yesterday to replace Billy Tauzin. This would be John Castellani, who spent the past nine years as chief executive of the Business Roundtable, the pro-business lobbying group that is chock full of chief executives (see here).
He arrives at a precipitous time for the pharmaceutical industry - a collective pipeline thinner than a terribly clogged artery; an historically contentious relationship with Democrats in Congress; a reputation among the public that may rival Toyota (but probably not BP), and a work force that is now devoid of who-knows-how-many scientists, the very type of employee that Lilly ceo John Lechleiter last week wrote this country needs more ...

And The Head Of The PhRMA Trade Group Is…

Well, he isn’t a former member of Congress. Instead, the PhRMA board chose a different kind of insider - John Castellani, who spent the past nine years as chief executive of the Business Roundtable, the pro-business lobbying group that is chock full of chief executives.
The move comes several months after Billy Tauzin resigned amid bickering over the health care reform deal he orchestrated with the White House. Tauzin, a former Congressman, argued that pursuing a bipartisan approach to the issue - and the Obama administration - was likely to yield more benefits. But that alienated some PhRMA members, many of whom have traditionally backed Republicans (back story).
By tapping Castellani, PhRMA gets a known quantity who understands what chief executives want and the power of lobbying....

Chapter One: Baseball
Opening Day for Major League Baseball is April 5, which dovetails nicely with the beginning of this series. It’s also a good starting point because baseball has always induced the nostalgic sandlot memory-lane-strolls of aging white men like Doris Kearns Goodwin. And the season goes on for-freaking-ever, so you can knock all three books out of the park by the All-Star break (July).
The Natural by Bernard Malamud
The Stats: For all the ink spilled about America’s “national pastime” (the one the NFL usurped about 30 years ago), there are very few great baseball novels. The Natural is one of them. You’ve seen the movie; you know the story. A 19-year-old prodigy, Roy Hobbs, gets shot by a mystery woman, drops out of sight, then magically reappe...

This comes as no surprise to anyone, but in the heat of a rugby match the other day in Australia, Storm fullback Billy Slater’s allegedly taunted the Knights forward Cory Paterson with the words, “go to your room and have a cry.” This referred to Paterson’s battle with depression over the past two years, keeping him off the playing field all of last season.
In sports, one would expect a certain level of smack talk on the playing field. Most of it is meant to incite the other team’s players, so that they react and play more emotionally. A player who plays from anger rather from their rational mind is likely to make more mistakes, so goes the common wisdom.
Where do we draw the line on the playing field?
Nobody would think about insulting another player because...

By Robin Strongin | February 13th, 2010
Immediately after the snow stopped falling in Washington DC this week, another news story took DC by storm–the resignation of Billy Tauzin, effective June 30th.
Mr. Tauzin’s departure comes at a critical time for those involved with health reform efforts, not to mention PHRMA’s own thick portfolio of issues that include patents and trade, the economy, taxes (think offshore), and shrivelling pipelines, just to name a few.
The job pays well, but the applicant will surely inherit a daunting to-do list…

After five years heading the pharmaceutical industry lobbying machine in Washington, DC, Billy Tauzin has resigned from PhRMA amid bickering over his deal with the White House over health care reform. The former Louisiana congressman, a 66-year-old cancer survivor who was paid $2 million a year, will formally leave on June 30 (read the bio).
His departure was precipitated by his calculated move that industry would benefit by working with the Obama administration, which alienated some PhRMA members and many Republicans, who have traditionally received industry backing. Under his tutelage, for instance, the trade group increased support for Democrats in an effort to become more of a bipartisan organization.
The deal he helped broker had drugmakers contributing $80 billion over a decade to he...

What a difference a few years can make. Drugmakers want a provision of the healthcare reform legislation, which offers 12 years of exclusivity, to remain intact because it offers market exclusivity by delaying lower-cost competiton. However, the White House and Henry Waxman, who chairs the House Energy & Commerce Committee, are jockeying to lower that to anywhere from seven to 10 years, the Associated Press writes.
And so the industry is threatening to bolt. In an e-mail obtained by the AP, PhRMA told its board members that “we could not support the bill” if the industry is given less than 12 years of competitive protection for the expensive products. “Please activate immediately all of your contacts,” said the e-mail from Billy Tauzin, the group’s presid...

The Web was buzzing after Billy Mays was found to have a mix of drugs in his system that included three different pain killers and cocaine. Because cocaine was in this mix, it led many to wonder if perhaps Mays was abusing prescription drugs, as well as the illegal drug of cocaine. So would a doctor really prescribe hydrocodone, oxycodone, and tramadol to one patient?

In a word, yes. It can happen with chronic pain. One source says that a:
“doctor might prescribe one medication to treat chronic, baseline pain and another one for a more acute pain that the first drug couldn’t prevent. In unusual circumstances, a third medication might be used to treat another “breakthrough” pain.”
The issue of three medications in Mays’ system probably would not have bee...

I have to say, I’m shocked at the news that Billy Mays had been using cocaine. For some reason, that TV pitchman that was so well-liked and so recognizable represented something down-to-earth and homey to me. I trusted his opinions and when he sold something, it made me stop and take a look at what he was pitching.

So the recent news that he had used cocaine “just days before his death” is shocking to me. The autopsy results having concluded that the cocaine use contributed to his heart attack.
It just goes to show that we can’t abuse our bodies and expect there to be no long-term effects. Granted, I’m shocked at some of the rock stars who are still around and yet have abused their bodies for years. Billy Mays’ body obvious couldn’t take it. He wa...

Several public figures passed away last week, including Ed McMahon, Billy Mays, Farrah Fawcett and of course, Michael Jackson. Each of them made a difference for people and we don’t have to go into how they were important. The point is, they were and will remain important for years to come.
When I consider the tragic life that Michael Jackson led, and how he told his former wife, Lisa Marie Presley, that he was afraid he would die the way her father Elvis did, one wonders how many other people have had the internal struggles that Jackson did.
People get addicted to innumerable things. Alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, sex, shopping, video games—each is problematic and each can lead to destruction. But in Jackson’s case it was a combination of problems. He struggled with self-este...

You know those awful commercials with the man shouting at you to by Orange Glow or OxiClean? That man, Billy Mays, died this morning at the age of 50.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it seems like the cause of death may have been a blow to the head by an object the day before. According to CNN, Mays was a passenger on a plane that blew a tire on landing. While everyone was safe, the overhead bins did open and objects spilled out:
According to a local Tampa TV station, Mays said: “All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”
Of course, many people are becoming more aware of head injuries due to Natasha Richardson’s untimely death after hitting he...

Midweek Mental Greening
I wrote an article at Celebrity Psychings yesterday musing on the effects advanced technology has on our mental health. The article was a culmination of two things: Watching the MTV interview in which Billy Bob Thornton reveals he has agoraphobia and stumbling across an opinion piece in an online version of St. Cloud State University’s newspaper.
The entire post basically deals with how advanced technology is allowing us to isolate ourselves more and more from society and create our own artificial environments, even with the power it gives us to communicate faster and more frequently than ever.
Here, though, I’d like to play devil’s advocate and talk about some of the ways these technological advancements can actually help our mental health. These advancem...

With a liberal supermajority in Washington increasingly possible, business is trying to buy up protection, in the hope that Democrats will go easier on them. Henry Waxman is no doubt grateful for this offer of the rope with which he will hang them. Most notable is the drug industry's $13.2 million ad buy to prop up 28 Congressional candidates, many of them vulnerable and all but three of them Democrats. Funded by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the industry trade group, the spots salute politicians who supported last fall's unsuccessful $60 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (Schip). Democrats failed to override President Bush's vetoes, but they'll prevail on their next try -- then continue on their march to national health care.More...

The ‘cagey Cajun,’ who once chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee and now heads the PhRMA trade group, says he has been spending some of his time tutoring ostrich-like ceo’s on the fine points of making favorable impressions on an angry Congress.
“Your house is on fire, and you’re still smoking in bed,” he says he warned pharma execs in a conference call earlier this year. And so, says Tauzin, the industry is paying for past mistakes. “It’s an accumulation of things some companies did over the years, Now, it’s death by a thousand cuts.” And somehow, “we gotta stop the bleeding.”
Unfortunately for Billy’s clients, they have yet to develop a pill that can generate trust.

The position by the trade group is revealed in a letter written by Billy Tauzin, PhRMA’s ceo, to Essential Action, one of several advocacy groups that are pushing drugmakers to disclose their global contributions. The reason? Concern that charitable and educational donations result in off-label marketing by groups receiving funds; mask the agendas of public policy groups that debate policy issues, and allow researchers to circumvent normal disclosure requirements.
Two months ago, the groups wrote the ceo of each drugmaker and large trade group asking them to commit to full disclosure on a worldwide basis. Since then, Lilly agreed, expanding an earlier promise to reveal all US donations. But the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations declined, saying dis...

Well we all don't have super-risky mobster lifestyles to induce depression like Paul Vitti's, but according to a new study of depressed type 2 diabetics -- depression has a negative impact on blood sugar control.
Researchers treated 93 patients with type 2 diabetes and depression with the antidepressant bupropion (Wellbutrin). They chose the drug because it is capable of reducing depression and weight simultaneously. The hypothesis behind the treatment was mood enhancement and weight reduction would, in fact, improve blood sugar control. (Always a gold star day in my book!) The results were documented in the March issue of Diabete...
