The desire to have a sharp white smile has become an important issue to many people. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has estimated that the demand for tooth whitening has increased by 300% over the past decade. Tooth whitening is the number one dental procedure requested by people under the age of 20 and between the ages of 30 and 50. Initially, tooth whitening was performed in the dentist’s office and this might require several visits. The process has become simpler and is now offered as an over the counter product allowing people to perform their own tooth whitening.
Two companies, Procter & Gamble and Colgate Palmolive, dominate the market for over the counter tooth whitening products. As of 2003, these companies had about 84% of the market. Americans spent about...

Press Release: OJ Worse for Teeth than Whitening, Says Eastman Institute for Oral Health Researchers

This study allowed us to understand the effect of whitening on enamel relative to the effect of a daily dietary activity, such as drinking juices.
“It’s potentially a very serious problem for people who drink sodas and fruit juices daily,” said Ren, who added that dental researchers nationwide are increasingly studying tooth erosion, and are investing significant resources into possible preventions and treatments. “We do not yet have an effective tool to avert the erosive effects, although there are early indications that higher levels of fluoride may help slow down the erosion.”
A Texas-based company, Beyond Dental and Health, sponsored the trial in part by providing the 6 percent hydrogen peroxide.
In the meantime, Ren advises that consumers be aware of the acidic nature of bev...

Cosmetic Dentistry: What is the Perfectly “White” Smile?

A bleach-white smile doesn’t look sensational on everyone, according to a study in JADA titled, “Assessing the Influence of Skin Color and Tooth Shade Value on Perceived Smile Attractiveness.”
By altering skin tone and tooth brightness on photographs of smiling women, researchers created a way to test how people perceive beauty in regards to tooth enamel color. Seventy dentists and 70 laypeople answered questions about the photos. The findings show that skin color affects the shade that is attractive on teeth.
According to the report:
“Dentists and laypeople did not perceive the brightest tooth shade to be the most attractive, and they did not perceive all skin colors to be equally attractive with bright white teeth. Respondents perceived dark skin with bright white teeth and fair ...

Home Teeth-Whitening Systems Could Use Some Touch-Up

A new study shows that a tiny amount of enamel decalcifies after application of home teeth-whitening products. Teeth can recalcify after minimal enamel loss, and fluoride assists in remineralization. So basically, the five brands of home whitener* that were evaluated are still considered safe.
What’s the point, then? The study’s findings provide reason for manufacturers to tweak home whitening systems and improve future generations of the products.

While other studies have tried and failed to measure enamel loss, this recent study by researchers at The Ohio State University measured enamel reduction to the billionth of a meter using a nanometer scale, rather than in microns, which measure to a millionth of a meter. Enamel loss ranged from 1.2 to 2 nanometers after home te...

Tooth Whitening Shops - Are They Practicing Dentistry?

Nicole Linker, left, an iSmile technician, checks on Katie Blood during her whitening treatment.
Why would anyone think this is NOT practicing dentistry, despite the lame excuses the iSmileXpress company gives?
The California Dental Board will currently go out of business on July 1 of this year, thanks to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger so the enforcement of California law has probably been lax. Also, Jerry Brown, the uber liberal former Governor ond now the Attorney General is too busy suing county governments and President Bush over global warming to bother.
Let’s see why should these companies be regulated?
1. The treatment is worthless - mostly dehydration of the teeth and hence a fraud
2. A patient actually may be harmed by the materials and how would the technicians (...
