The MedLibs Round -as you may know- is a monthly blog carnival of blog posts on subjects pertaining to medical information.

Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est (And thus knowledge itself is power)
-- Sir Francis Bacon.

Welcome to the 21st edition of Scientia Pro Publica, the blog carnival devoted to nurturing and encouraging an online community of blog writers who communicate with the public about science, environment and medicine. Since it was the 201st anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, I think it is important to mention that writing about science for the public has historical precedent: Darwin and other scientists of yore wrote extensively about their ideas for the public. In this blog carnival, you'...

I've been a bad, bad organizer.

Poor Martin went through all that work to put together another bang up Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle (the 130th, to be precise), and I didn't publicize it. Well, hopefully better late than never. Go. Read. Learn.

Then don't forget that less than two weeks hence, on February 25, the 131st Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle will be held at Providentia. Guidelines for submission can be found here. So start getting your skeptical blogging going to produce yet another great edition of the Skeptics' Circle, which, believe it or not, has been running five years now. Finally, if you want to host, check out the schedule and drop me a line at orac@scienceblogs.com. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

Faster than a blink of an eye (well, not really, but it sure seems that way sometimes) another fortnight has flown by, meaning that it's time yet again for another meeting of that venerable blog carnival of critical thinking, the Skeptics' Circle. This time around, we have our first ever veterinarian hosting. I could make jokes about the Skeptics' Circle going to the dogs, but I'll exercise some rare self-restraint and refrain from doing so. (Oh, wait...)

In any case, this time around, the 129th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is being held over at SkeptVet.

Head on over and check it out.

Then join us in two weeks for the next installment in this ever-growing exercise in blogging about skepticism, critical thinking, and science, when it will be held at The Lay Scientist. If you're a blo...

It's amazing how fast two weeks can slide by, but the 129th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching and will be landing Thursday, January 28 at The SkeptVet Blog. Blog-specific instructions for submitting your best skeptical blogging can be found here, while general guidelines can be found here.

This is the first time we've had a skeptical veterinarian host; so let's try to get him some great material to help him do a bang-up job. And if you have some good woo related to veterinary or animals to send in, so much the better. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

I commend Dr. Sidorov for his selection of a new personal photo on his blog — very handsome, and certainly a better presentation than this earlier photo from his youth.

Well, it's finally happened. 2009 is now in the dustbin of history. It was a thoroughly awful year, which is why hope springs eternal that 2010 will be better. Given that it would be difficult for 2010 to be worse than 2009, it's a pretty sure bet that it probably will be better, but I never underestimate the power of the universe to mess things up worse than they already are messed up. In other words, whenever I start thinking that things can't get any worse, I remind myself that they most definitely can. On the other hand, as far as the ol' blog goes, 2009 was a fantastic year. After around two years of flat traffic, traffic in 2009 is up by around 50% on average, with November being the best month ever in the history of the blog. I have no idea why (I'm not really doing anything much di...

This time, it's the 124th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, and it's finally landed, late but still brimming with skeptical goodness at Beyond the Short Coat.

Next up, two weeks hence, on December 3, will be TechSkeptic at Effort Sisyphus. His instructions for submitting your work are here. General instructions for what we look for in a Skeptics' Circle entry are here. So, by the way, is the schedule.
It's almost here, and it's almost time!

The 123rd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching. This time around it will be here on Thursday, November 5. That means skeptical bloggers out there don't have much time to get their best recent work to Colin at Blue Genes for inclusion.

Guidelines for what we're looking for when it comes to submissions to the Skeptics' Circle can be found here. Instructions for submitting to this week's Skeptics' Circle are here.

Don't let Colin down! Bury him in submissions! (Not literally, of course, which would be hard. How do you bury someone in electronic text?) Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

I really have to apologize to the Young Australian Skeptics. I screwed up. I didn't do my duty as organizer of The Skeptics' Circle. The Aussies provided a bang-up edition of the 122nd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, and I didn't even promote it.

Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est (And thus knowledge itself is power)
-- Sir Francis Bacon.

As you know, the first full week of October is Nobel Prize week, the week when new discoveries and innovations that benefit humanity are celebrated on the worldwide stage. In short, this is the one week of the year when scientists get to be international "rock stars"! So in honor of the Nobels, I think it is appropriate to celebrate science by focusing on those who write about science, nature, medicine and technology for the public. The only blog carnival that does this is Scientia Pro Publica (Science for the People). I hope you en...

Yikes! How did I forget to plug the Skeptics' Circle? This time around, it's the Skeptics Circle #117: The Chiropractic Edition and it's here to readjust your subluxated skepticism. Or something. Either way, it's a hoot.

I do fear one thing though. Mike Meadon referred to the Skeptics' Circle as "venerable." Back when a blogger named St. Nate started this whole thing and then a few months later handed it off to me, way back in 2005, I never would have ever thought that one day the Circle would be referred to as "venerable."

God, I'm so old. Or my blog is. Or something.

In any case, next up on August 27 is The Evolving Mind. Be sure to get your skeptical brains working to produce the fodder for yet another in the venerable line of skeptical explorations that the Circle has become.

Welcome to the latest edition of SurgeXperiences, the fortnightly carnival of blog posts related to surgery.
This happens to be the 50th edition. Ironically the number 50 has acquired an altogether unwelcome significance this week due to the unfortunate and untimely death of Michael Jackson aged 50. Mr. Jackson may very well be the King of Pop to fans and music lovers, but to most of us in healthcare he is probably better known as the worst example of celebrity plastic surgery on demand or as a prominent plastic surgeon describes him, the most famous “nasal cripple.”

Don't forget to get your fortnight's dose of skepticism right here, as The Unincredible Hallq serves up the latest Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle. It's another tasty concoction of skepticism, critical thinking, and science.

Next up on July 2 will be a newcomer and first time host, Homologous Legs. If you're a blogger with a skeptical bent, start sharpening your pencils (metaphorically speaking, of course--who uses pencils to blog?), and be sure to send your best stuff for the 114th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle. Then join us here two weeks hence! Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

This is only the second issue of Scientia Pro Publica, but I am so pleased with its progress so far. Not only are friends and colleagues contributing their essays to this blog carnival, but there is an impressive influx of "new blood", too. Together, all of us are helping to promote the value of communicating science, nature and medicine with the public. Keep up the good work, everyone!

SurgeXperiences 219 « The Sterile Eye.

Now there’s a lot of really impressing and advanced medical illustrations available to students of anatomy and medicine today. But nothing appeals to me like the simple and effective lithographs that accompanied the early editions of the tome of anatomical knowledge that is Gray’s Anatomy. The 1918 edition is in the public domain, and is available in its entirety online. All illustrations here, relating to the submitted posts, are taken from this edition. So once again I present you with a very visual edition. Hope you enjoy it!

There are several noteworthy medical blog carnivals (Grand Rounds) around, but it is difficult to make (and thus take) an email/RSS feed to these carnivals, because the editions are hosted by different bloggers each time.
Recently Walter Jessen of the Highlight HEALTH Network has managed to make a feed to all important medical blog carnivals (based on [...] (Source: Laika's MedLibLog)

Another surgical dogma appears to be on the verge of biting the dust in the face of evidence from well-designed clinical trials. Moreover, if this trial is correct, if anything, it suggests that immediate feeding is actually better than the old way.

This news story of a retired hand surgeon in Virginia being charged by police for shooting a hawk that threatened an orphaned squirrel he and his wife had raised is replete with irony at many levels.

It's a little late, but better late than never! Skeptics Circle #106 finally landed last night over at Disillusioned Words. Jeff Stingerstein lays it all out in a "just the facts, m'am" manner that demonstrates that, for all the fantastically creative and wild formats that prior hosts have used to present the last fortnight's skepticism, sometimes the straightforward is just as satisfying--especially given the quality of this edition's entries.

Next up in two weeks will be Skeptics' Field Guide. Start revving up your skeptical keyboards and supply Jeff and Theo with the material they need to keep the tradition alive!

And, as always, I am always looking for hosts. Indeed, I've been amazed at how good Skeptics' Circle hosts have been and how rare it is for the Circle to be a clunker. Still...

Welcome to the first edition of “A Source of Inspiration: A Respiratory Therapy Blog Carnival.” It is my hope that this will become a tradition similar to the more notorious medical blog carnivals, Grand Rounds and Change of Shift.
My goal was simple: To find a few respiratory therapists, nurses, doctors, and even patients that have a true interest in respiratory care and urge them to contribute to the medical/respiratory blogosphere. My job would then be to organize all of these wonderful posts into a concise format that highlights the best of all things respiratory, in one location.
I’m certain you can judge the success of my endeavors in the following submissions.

In the days leading up to hosting this edition of Change of Shift, I gave a great deal of thought to the phenomena of the internet, blogging, Twitter, iPhones, Facebook, and the many technological advances that now keep us all connected and communicating. That said, as much as I love these manifestations of our Digital Age, I also see these forums as proverbial fish bowls in which we all stew ourselves in the waters of public communication, often rendering ourselves vulnerable and naked as the observing masses watch our every move.Over on Twitter, many of us now communicate in a "micro-blogging" format, using 140-word posts to get our message across to our myriad "followers". Twitter is, for all intents and purposes the newest digital fish bowl, and as more and more of us jump into the wate...

Sorry I'm late announcing it, but better late than never.

Right on schedule, the 104th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle has arrived at Space City Skeptics. In fact, it's the sort of thing that will test your mind and cleverness in that it's...well, a test. But don't worry. It's not one of those nasty tests that you took in school and perhaps later in college. It's a fun test. So go forth and enjoy.

And don't forget to join us again two weeks hence, when the 105th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle will be held at It's the Thought That Counts. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

If you are a blogger or read blogs often, you know that there are a good number of excellent blog carnivals focused on specific themes. If you are interested in medicine, you know what carnival to visit. Education, the same. Biology, neuroscience, nursing, birds, aging, philosophy...a variety of topics are very well covered in the blogosphere.
What you probably haven't come across is a high-quality "metacarnival" or "carnival of carnivals", where you can read the best blog posts ACROSS topics, subjects, disciplines.
This is why a few blog carnival "organizers" are launching next Monday a monthly rotating "MetaCarnival" to feature the most interesting posts from a variety of high-quality blog carnivals.
Participating blog carnivals so far, alphabetica...

My good friend Dr. Ramona Bates, plastic surgeon and quilter extraordinaire from Little Rock, AR, is the host of the latest edition of SurgeXperiences, the blog carnival of all things surgical.
She has done a great job (as usual) with posts that rival the weekly Medical Grand Rounds.
Suture for a Living: SurgeXperiences 208.

Welcome to the latest edition of SurgeXperiences! Fall is here in the northern hemisphere. The leaves are being to turn colors and the air is cooler. Perfect for a nice walk in the woods (don’t forget the hunter orange) with my dog. I’ll leave this “bounty” of good writing for you to read at your leisure. Enjoy!
I will be hosting Mendel's Garden #25 at evolgen. That's right: the carnival is back! Mendel's Garden is the original blog carnival devoted to genetics. Submit your genetics related posts to evolgen[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Because Mendel's Garden has been dormant for the past few months, I'll be accepting posts written from March through October. So, dig through your archives to find something good, and shoot me an email. Read the comments on this post... (Source: evolgen)

The latest episode of SurgeXperiences, the surgical blog carnival is up at The Sterile Eye a medical blog authoured by Øystein Horgmo, a Norwegian medical photographer and videographer.
SurgeXperiences 206 « The Sterile Eye.

The images in this edition are all microscopic photos of stained histologic sections and cytologic smears of different types of cancer. In all its horror, even cancer can at some level be beautiful. This edition of SurgeXperiences presents posts on both the beauty and horrors of the surgical world.

Many thanks for including my submission.
In an anatomically related post scanman Vijay presents some interesting CT images of colorectal malignancies. (Source: scan man's notes)

On Friday, I made an announcement about the Skeptics' Circle scheduled for July 31 in the light of having learned some very bad news, namely that the planned host, Jeff of Blue Collar Scientist, had recently been diagnosed with liver cancer. I wanted to verify that Jeff wasn't going to host (as I assumed he wouldn't; after all, it's only a blog carnival). Jeff finally got back to me and informed that (1) he is doing as well as can be expected and (2) he won't be hosting. Once again, let's all wish him nothing but the best in his impending battle against this cancer.

I was originally going to hold a drawing of some sort to decide whom to award the date to, including people who wrote me to volunteer and bloggers scheduled after July 31 who might want a chance to move their turn up a bit. He...

It's that time again.

Round and round the Skeptics' Circle goes, coming rapidly around to arrive yet again in less than a week. This time around, it's set to land on next Thursday, June 19 at Ionian Enchantment. Blog-specific instructions for submitting your pearls of skepticism, science, and critical thinking can be found here, and more general instructions can be found here. So, if you're a blogger who regularly likes to apply reason, skepticism, and critical thinking to dubious claims, get cracking and send Mike your best stuff before Wednesday!
I must admit that I was getting a bit worried. Morning came today, and there was no Skeptics' Circle. I went to work. Every so often throughout the day I checked again.

Still no Skeptics' Circle, at least as of early afternoon.

I got home from work around 8 PM, and to my relief, there it was in all its usual glory, a bright, shiny new edition of the Skeptics' Circle over at Jyunri Kankei. And, boy, after subjecting myself to all the idiocy of the "Green Our Vaccines" rally over the last three days, I sure did need a cool, soothing dose of critical thinking, science, and reason. So head on over and take a look!

Next up to host is Ionian Enchantment, in just two weeks on June 19. You all know what to do; so don't let our next host down!

In the meantime, if you want to host a Circle (and ...

Happy Hospitalist hosts this week’s edition of Grand Rounds, the medical blog carnival.
Grand Rounds Is Here, Turn Off Your Dang Cell Phone

Welcome one and all to my very first Grand Rounds. I was handed Volume 4 Number 37 by the one and only Nicholas Genes of Blogborygmi fame. Thank you Nick for this opportunity. It is an honor to present to you all the greatest the web has to offer this week, organized in my own Happy little way. As many movie do gooders have learned, all actors and actresses in this universe can be traced back to Kevin Bacon through a maximum of 6 movies. Aptly known as the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Well, Blog do gooders, I will show you how every brilliant blogger this week can be traced to Happy in six links or less.

In a couple of hours, I'll be en route to my favorite city in the world, a place where, although I lived there for but a brief three years, I felt completely at home.

Chicago, baby!

Yes, I'm on the way to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in Chicago. While there, I'll be checking out the latest and greatest findings from the world of cancer therapy. As any blogger would, I'm hoping not just to learn something but to find interesting blog material.

In the meantime, don't forget that the 88th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching on Thursday, June 5 at Jyunri Kankei. If you're a skeptical blogger, don't forget to submit the best stuff you've written over the last couple of weeks, and then both bloggers and readers should join us on June 5 to peruse the...

You know, after over three years of existence and nearly two years that I've been entrusted with the responsibility of organizing it, I thought I had seen pretty much every possible permutation of how the Skeptics' Circle could be hosted. We've had cartoons, soda machines, stories, raucous meetings in pubs, and a whole bunch of other cool ideas, mixed in with some "just the facts, m'am," straight ahead hosting. But there's one permutation we haven't had yet:

A Dirty Limericks edition. Now, thanks to Akusai at Action Skeptics, we do. Even better, it's the usual excellent crop of skeptical blogging showcased within the (sort of) dirty limericks.

Next up is G at Jyunri Kankei, where the 88th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is scheduled to land two weeks hence on June 5. And, believe me, aft...

Daniel Goldberg of the Medical Humanities Blog has posted the latest edition of the Health Wonk Review. Daniel puts a unique slant on his writing:
As I see it, the key role for a medical humanist – if they wish to be consistent with an ethos of medieval and Renaissance humanists – is to focus on the translation of theory into practice.
…and he throws in some humor to boot. Great reading!

In a mere two weeks, the Circle will once again meet, this time on Thursday, May 8. Start sharpening your skeptical pen to produce searing bits of skepticism appropriate to the host, and then join us in two weeks.
Our colleague Dr. Aniruddha Malpani, MD has posted a diverse and enlightening latest version of the Medicine 2.0 Blog Carnival.
Dr. M summarizes 4 major influences which will help patients to regain control over their healthcare:

1. Patients will keep their own medical records using a PHR ( Personal Health Record)
2. Information Therapy can be prescribed to them, tailored to their needs, based on their medical problems captured in the PHR
3. Web 2.0 technologies will allow them to form social communities to help and support each other
4. We can deliver this information to them 24/7 through their mobile, wherever they may be, whenever they need it!

I’m amazed how quickly creative and convergent thinking is crossing international boundaries.

The April Fool’s Day edition of the Medblogs Grand Rounds is up.
Rather, the many parts of Grand Rounds are up.
Starting at Grunt Doc, going through Dr. Val, the Health Business Blog, the guys at Medgadget, Dr.A, Dr. Rob and finally ending with Kim.
A great group effort. This is the best Grand Rounds that I have seen.
Update: I missed out Medgadget in my original post. Corrected now. Thanks to Ramona.

The most recent edition of the Carnival of the Spineless is now available for you to enjoy. The host, who is a pal of mine, asked me for a contribition, so I had to dig through my previous blog entries to find something that might be appropriate. I do what I can to support as many blog carnivals as possible, so you may or may not enjoy my meagre contributions ... you be the judge. But otherwise, do go there and support this blog carnival with your numbers and your comments! Read the comments on this post... Yes, indeed, my friends, it is Friday once again, and as usual, my pal, The Modulator, has amassed a pile of links to ANIMAL IMAGES for you to enjoy in the 180th edition of the Friday Ark.

Did you know that this blog carnival began as a way to create a less contentious atomsphere on the internet, which had developed due to political sparring all week long, week after week? Anyway, in an effort to take a break from the fighting and to create a more congenial atmosphere, the political pundits began a campaign where they lowered their verbal armaments one day per week so they could engage each other in "Friday CatBlogging" and then it expanded to include other animals because, afterall, the political pundits didn't want to be speciists. So the rest, my peep...

This year's a Leap Year, as it so happens, and it turns out that Leap Day is tomorrow. Unfortunately for "alternative medicine" mavens, conspiracy theorists, and lovers of woo everywhere, that means that the Skeptical Conspiracy to Suppress All Dissent--I mean, the Skeptics' Circle--is meeting over at--where else?--The Conspiracy Factory, where, just as woo-meisters have always suspected, skeptical bloggers everywhere are taking their instructions from their nefarious leader, who bears an uncanny resemblance to...well, you'll have to go over to the 81st Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle to find out.

Next up on the schedule to continue the conspiracy is Bing McGhandi over at Happy Jihad's House of Pancakes, who will be taking over the reins for the Circle for the next meeting, now scheduled ...

I know you all are sitting around this evening bored, with nothing to do, so let me help you a little bit. I am hosting another blog carnival, the Carnival of Cities. This is a fun little blog carnival that is surprisingly popular. It focuses on any aspect of cities; where you currently live, where you once lived, where you visited. For example, have you ever visited or lived somewhere that you've absolutely enjoyed? What made that place so special to you? A special coffee shop, pub or restaurant? The city's proximity to wild places, the beach or mountains? Lots of bike trails, parks or open space? A fabulous public library or public transit system? Or .. ?

I have been bugging everyone I know to contribute to this carnival, even my fellow Scibling...

Now that I have finished putting together the 69th edition of I and the Bird (*whew* that's hard work!), I now am focusing my energies on another blog carnival that I am hosting next week: Carnival of Cities. This is a relatively new (to my readers) blog carnival, but that is alright because the 20 February edition was just published for you to read. So even though many of you are not familiar with this blog carnival, you now have the opportunity to read the most recent edition and get some ideas for your own blog entries that you can share with all of us next week, on Living the Scientific Life (Scientist, Interrupted). The rules are that I can accept ONE contribution per blog, and it must be about ONE city, either a city you've visited, or lived ...

Hey everyone, I am once again asking you to send me submissions for my issue of the I and the Bird blog carnival. The carnival will be published here on 21 February at noon EST (unless the blog platform's scheduling feature is still screwy, which it might be, grrrr). I am seeking submissions about wild birds, your trip reports, photographs, essays, stories, song files .. whatever! According to this blog carnival's rules, I can accept only one submission per blog, and that submission can only be about wild birds, so those of you who own and write about domestic birds and parrots (like me!) will have to start your own carnival to share your stories about those birds with the public.
