I get emails occasionally asking if I’d give up some “real estate” on my site for advertising.
I used to accept advertising on this site, and it was kind of nice. I’d make a few bucks each month for a banner or a few links sprinkled in the sidebar, and nobody complained.
The common arguments potential advertisers give are “it’s really not that noticeable” or “why not make some money for your writing?”. The truth is, when it comes to working really hard towards something, every little bit matters.
When I redesigned this site a year ago, I spent months poring over many different iterations, and built the theme from the ground up. (Well, almost ground up. I used the Thesis theme framework. And yes, if you click that link it *could* make m...

This is a continuation of my last post on creating magnificent content. If you’ll remember, we talked about how the Internet is going through a rough patch, with content farms are springing up and creating one-off bits of Internet scrap that rank highly for dinky keywords. It’s a game of quantity versus quality.
This is called the relying on the “Long Tail“, or getting all those shoddy pages to rank highly for non-competitive keywords.
The Long Tail
For those of you who don’t know what this mythical Long Tail is, it’s a term coined by Chris Anderson of Wired. Anderson’s book The Long Tail was meant to show that businesses like Amazon were making tons of money selling tiny amounts of tons of products. Smart people have already pointed out that the l...

List blogging is nothing new. In fact, it’s origins come from magazines. Go peruse the local magazine rack and you’ll find tons of helpful articles like “10 Ways to Lose 20 Pounds” all over the shelves.
People have argued that things like bullet points, breaking up text into tiny paragraphs, obligatory number in the title, and tons of other factors.
I have made (and still do to some extent) a good portion of my income writing list posts for various websites and the truth is this: lists work for grabbing attention. Always have, and always will.
The thing to remember is that lists aren’t evil; they’re only a format.
And there are other really effective ways to build traffic and community, without conforming to an unwritten standard.

How much time do you spend on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites? It’s estimated that Robert Scoble spent over 2,555 hours on Friendfeed and Twitter in 2008, which is way more than a normal full-time job (2,000 hours).
Robert has essentially worked a full-time job with overtime for these two companies, pro bono. And don’t kid yourself into thinking that he’s the only one either.
But here’s the kicker: people like Mr. Scoble spend a lot unhealthy amounts of time building up profiles on sites they don’t even own.
Those of us who have spent enough time around the web realize that sites and services come and go, and to trust that one will be around forever is absolutely bonkers. Friendfeed, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter...

The proliferation of blogging has captured the online community. As blogs originally were most popular during political campaigns, there are now blogs dedicated to pretty much any topic under the sun. If you’re new to the blogging community or are looking to improve your current blog, you should try to make your blog stand out from the rest of the pack as much as possible. The only way you’ll generate steady traffic to your site is if it offers something that other blogs in the same genre don’t. Here are a few tips to consider as you try to develop a niche audience for your blog:

Produce new material. If you’re simply regurgitating what’s already available on the web then you’re going to have a small audience and nobody will link to your site. Offering a unique perspective on ...

Blogging For Traffic Tip #1 - Create Original Content Of Significant Value
Content is king. If you have been in the Internet marketing scene for any period of time you would have heard this saying day in and day out. Every Internet marketing manual has this as it’s mantra and rightly so.
One of the biggest problems people have when blogging has nothing to do with the lack of traffic coming to their site. It’s a symptom of something more sinister. Bad content. Even worse then poorly written original content is content that is not original at all. This is the death bell for all blogs that want to be taken seriously.
You HAVE to have unique content. It is the lif...

A great way to expose your article on the search engines is to optimize your articles or blog posts as if they were pages on your website.
Here’s how you can get an article ranked well and generate tons of traffic:
1) Go to Google Adwords’ Keyword Suggestion tool and type in some general keywords in your niche. Look for a good Search Volume and copy those keywords into a spreadsheet or text document.
2) Search for those keywords in quotes on Google. For example, if your keyword is “dog training tips”, that’s
exactly how I would input it in Google. Look for results of less than 2,000,000. These search terms are relatively easy to rank well for.
3) Write an article, optimized for those keywords.
4) Submit your article to the directories.

Social Networking comes in many shapes and forms, but the good thing is that it’s easy to dabble in and I’ve, personally, seen great results with little effort.
It’s free to try, so there are no excuses.
Here’s how it works. You sign up for one or more of the programs below (all are free).
• StumbleUpon.com
• Digg.com
• Reddit.com
(You can search Google or other search engines to find hundreds more. This is just for starters.)
Next, update your profile on each site you’ve joined, including your URL and photo.
Then, the next time you post something of interest on your blog (or see something on a friend’s blog), you just submit it to the sites above.
Many of these Social Networking sites expect you to be an active participant. You’re expected to rate and comment on other ...

How to fight trackback spam in your WordPress blog?

A trackback feature of many publishing software/programs like WordPress, Moveable Type, TextPattern, etc. or even free hosts like Blogger, enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and referring to their posts. It has been considered as “communication” among blogs. Linking to other websites, which will automatically be called trackback, means several things:
1. It shows appreciation and acknowledgment.
2. It indicates worthiness of the article linked.
3. It’s one way of expressing your reaction to another blogger’s articles.
4. It’s one way of getting comments. If you send trackbacks to other blogs, there’s a great possibility that the blogger will compliment you through commenting to your post.
5. It’s one way of building inbound links. Inb...

5 things I learned from fellow bloggers on increasing my feed subscribers

This blog has been online for over a year but I have not received enough number of feed subscribers to boast. I only got around 10 subscribers. Recently though, I saw how my feed subscriber count went as high as 51 (as of this moment). This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of articles I read from other bloggers.
When it comes to increasing your feed subscribers, I found these great tips helpful:
1. Always provide good and helpful content. This has been overly emphasized in every blogging tips about increasing feed count. Of course, this is vital in attracting visitors, and potential subscribers as well. This has two benefits: getting new subscriptions and preventing unsubcriptions.
2. Adhering to frequent posting or not? There has been a debate going on in the blogosphere...

Avoid WordPress comment spam in two steps!

For months now, this blog has been freed from comment spam I used to experience before because I found out the most effective ways to avoid WordPress spam.
1. Deactivating Akismet. Previously, I was getting at least 200 spam comments per day. I had to scan them one-by-one because some comments were filtered as spam by Akismet. Out of frustration, I deactivated the plugin with thoughts of completely avoiding these spam messages. True enough, I have not received spam comments since then.
Note: Do not delete Akismet from the plugins directory because you’re blog may experience another spam flood.
2. Install a spam blocking plugin. Currently I am using Matriphe Keycode, one of the best anti spam plugins I’ve ever used. (Source: Jammed: Full into Capacity)
