Photo CreditIf you are living with diabetes, a lot of your energy and time goes to planning, selecting and deciding what to eat.

That, and considering that you don't want to eat the same thing over and over again. Of course you don't want to ditch the nutritional value of your diabetes-friendly food.

One thing that can help you is a diabetes cookbook. Like some idea? There's a new one featured at Diabetes Daily called A 7 Day Meal Plan with Diabetes.

Many of you are probably familiar with the recent sale of Wellsphere, a health blog aggregator, to HealthCentral Network this past week. This sale has thrown the medical blogosphere into protest mode, though I think it is undeserved.Dr Val Jones reports the saga very completely on her new health blog, Better Health (also see post from Hippocrates). Last year, medical bloggers were inundated by doting emails from a Dr. Geoff Rutledge. Mine began like this:Hi Drs "My three shrinks". ,I was on a search for the best medical blogs, when I found your Shrink Wrap blog at http://psychiatrist-blog.blogspot.com/. I think your blog is great. Dinah's post on True Emotions struck a chord (My emotions aren't Italian, either), and your iphone edition grand rounds was remarkable. [links added]I...

Here's another one from the mail that you guys should check out:

Hi Gloria,

As someone who blogs about health-related topics, I thought you might be interested in some new, free web-based public dashboards that cover a variety of health-related topics. Tomorrow, December 9, we will be introducing three new public dashboards: 1) Health Insurance Dashboard; 2) Public Health Dashboard; and 3) Life Expectancy Dashboard.

You can view a copy of the press release, and interact with the actual dashboards, at www.PublicDashboards.com.

If you get a chance to check these out, we would love to hear your thoughts and opinions! You can reach me at bob@visualcalc.com, or by phone at 916-939-2020. I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Bob Bennett

Her prize package included a trip to the LCA campus in Sedona, where she attended a "diabetes bootcamp" from October 5 to October 17. She will now undergo remote counseling with LCA consultants for an entire year with the goal of treating her diabetes.

Jeannie has also been given a video camera which will be used to record her experiences for the video blog.
This post from podcasting guru Jason Van Orden leaped out and grabbed me by the eyeballs.
If you look at the date of this post…and the date of my last one, I think the reason will be obvious.
Podfading, or postfading, or whatever you choose to call it, are very real issues for medpros. In MEDicine, the tendency is to be hyper diligent, and as a PROfessional, you want your output to be polished, and assume that your audience expects the same.
Add that all up, and you can get some pretty long gaps between your posts. And your show can disappear entirely, if you’re not careful.

Rambo Was Right
Jason — and the relatively large number of people who commented on his post — touched on a perennial danger for both bloggers and podcasters.

At the beginning of this year I had this idea to read as many medical student blogs as I can. So the first thing I did was to search for those medical student bloggers. As I said in an earlier post, I found more than a hundred blogs. To keep track of them I subscribed to all of them. I used to read some blogs more than others. There was a huge difference in quality and writing talent among bloggers. Some with no doubt could write for magazines. Some are just having fun. And some blogs were no more than an electronic public diary.Yesterday I made up my mind and decided to let go and un-subscribe to the blogs that there was no more use for me to follow. From about 150 feeds in my reader, now I only have 60.I will not list the ones I read or the ones that I wont be reading regularly anymore bu...

Is it flashy? Is it full of Web 2.0, AJAX-y, or Flash animation goodness? Hell no, cuz that’s just not the way Gruntdoc rolls. Short, sweet and to the point–we need editions like these just as much as the envelope-pushing ones, and if I do say so myself, completely apropos for the nostalgia of the first ever 6-peat host.

Members of stablebloodsugar.net have access to tools such as an insulin calculator, a blood glucose monitoring log and a food database that provides the carbohydrate content of common food items.

The website has been live since April. The response to the website has been positive among her colleagues and some of her blogs have been published by several ezines.

Right now the website is one penny for the first 100 members who sign up.

Went out to a park the other day to shoot some wildlife. Uploaded a pic to Flickr, and now I’m seeing how it embeds in the blog. Heeeeere goes:

I could delete this if it works, but I should probably leave it up just ’cause. There aren’t any other pics in my photostream yet, but that will change soon.
Ok, onto the next post…
(Update: Ugh…how do I get the text NOT to float on the right? Small potatoes for now…how do I get the pic to specifically link to the “Large” version on Flickr? Perhaps that’s a blogging software limitation. I’ll try it by hand. And why am I typing “out loud” for testing purposes? Probably to show that even though I may not post every week day, I still think about it. ) (Source: Mexico Medical Stud...

Sid Schwab posted an entry the other day about EM blogs (I’m including nurses in what I write here) and their penchant for not only being right-of-center politically, but “vitriolic.” I want to say off the bat that I’m not here to defend his remarks point-by-point, but what he said about his post not being directed at any one blogger in particular and specifically that it was written months ago is absolutely true. In fact, he shared the draft with me in November of last year. The draft then is very close to the post of the other day, down to the same witty ending. In that sense, what is written really is representative of how he feels, not some knee-jerk rant.
But why did he share the draft in the first place? Because I said that I was going to post about that very ...

Blog Updates:
I’m happy to report all is well. The blog software is updated, making room for all the “current” plug-ins, themes, etc. and most importantly, the security fixes applied so that I don’t get h4×0r5 hijacking the site to something hideous and embarrassing like an online yarn shop. I’d never live that one down. Regarding the slick black theme: yes, it’s understated, and surprisingly, yes, it’s pretty much done. I downloaded it of course, because I can’t create much of anything, but I can always edit and tweak. (which I need to do because I want my links underlined and my blogroll subcategorized) However, I really like the minimal, clean look. Maybe in a month or two I’ll think to add a graphic here and there, but the day ...

Tonight I plan to upgrade this site to Wordpress 2.5.x. I’ll also be applying a new theme, though I’m not 100% sure which one it will be. I can say, however, that it will NOT be a completed task anytime soon. I’m not a web designer and I don’t want to waste time making things purty. I care more about functionality and such and will be adding a few new plugins as well. So, if there are a few glitches y’all notice over the next 24-48h or so, please PLEASE let me know. Letting me know what you think of the new semi-temporary look and feel as well would make me verrry happy.
I may yet continue as a Mexican medical student at another school, so I haven’t given up the domain yet, but it’s time for some serious housecleaning around here. If your blog is n...

Just a ping (“One ping please, Vasili?”) to let everyone know that I’m clawing my way back into the blogosphere. I just fired up my newsreader and counted the thousands of posts since I last ran it over a month ago. SHOCKING! Most friends had 20-30 posts, and not a small few had quite a few more than that. I am so ashamed.
So, given the above, I’m sorry to admit to my peeps that even though I’d like to, I almost certainly won’t get to read all of your posts. If your magnum opus was much before last week or so, chances are I won’t see it unless you tell me.
As for me, well, I’m doing better in some ways and worse in others, all to be shared soon. I know, you’ve heard that before, but this time, I’m motivated by something coming up...

So Dinah, Roy and I ventured down to Washington DC to the American Psychiatric Association conference to talk about the use of computers in psychiatry. I was hoping to get a picture of our feet under the panel table, but that didn't happen. What did happen was that various Shrink Rappers met a couple Shrink Rap readers, and we appreciated the feedback you gave us. I hope our fellow psychiatrists enjoyed all the presentations at that session as much as we did. I personally enjoyed hearing patients talk about how online discussion boards helped them get better. That was pretty cool, and not something you hear every day. I thought it was pretty brave of them to put their histories out there in public, and I appreciated their willingness to do this for the education of psychiatrists. Thanks aga...

One of our favorite blogs (in fact, one of the ones we named “Best of the Web” in the Depression category) is back — depression introspection.
I very much like her response, Response to “Mental Health Blogs Going Bye-Bye?”, to Philip’s Furious Seasons’ entry about where do mental health blogs go to, since it seems like they come and go with a fair amount of regularity (even amongst the professionals).
Here are a few of my own observations, which echo some of Marissa’s thoughts…
	1. Blogging well is hard. Blogging poorly is easy. Having a blog that is nothing but links to news stories (as some medical blogs I follow do) is easy. Commenting on those links with some intelligence and insight and more than 10 words is hard. Blogging intell...

I’m back!! I missed blogging tremendously with so many times thinking in my head, “Oh, I gotta write/share that!” but I made a commitment to let things settle down to a dull roar before I started posting again, not wanting to have this start/stop bad mojo on the blog. Thankfully, I think I’m finally at the point where I can say things are calm enough and look like they’ll remain so, at least as much as I can expect. So much to tell, so much I’m glad is in the past, so much to look forward to–all in good time.
For now, here’s a small list of some general comments to catch you up, in no special order (some of which will be expanded on later):

Hello…thanks for still checking in! It seems odd to have a post entitled “Hiatus” when I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks, but I felt at least y’all deserved to know that it will still be a bit before anything really moves on here. Things have not been settling easily, though. Every significant step forward seems to have at least an equal or greater step backwards. For example, our stuff got through the border–and we saved over $2500 compared to the cheapest quotes we were getting in GDL, all things being said and done. Except things at my parents’ house weren’t working out, so we moved to my father-in-laws. Like I needed any more moving. At least we’re talking the original stuff we had in the cars only–the big stuff went strai...

In this blog, if you search "Alzheimer's disease", there will be more than a couple old posts that will come out.

And that's because scientists have been discovering evidences that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type 3 diabetes.

I don't have any breakthrough on the matter, it's just I want diabetes readers (in this blog or somewhere else) that the Hart Empire-Network is looking for a blogger for its existing AD blog called Battling Alzheimer's (and Battling Cancer too!).

Check out the link and forward to people you know who might be interested.

It’s gameday once again for my Green Bay Packers, this time for the NFC Championship and a trip to the Super Bowl. The New York Giants, proving themselves a team to take seriously in Dallas’ defeat last week, I’m afraid to say is too beat up and inconsistent to be a match for the green and gold. I’m not a superstitious person, so I have no “jinx” worries by typing this before kickoff.
The big story on the game is the weather. The 3-day estimate for kickoff was 4 degrees. I just checked online about 45 minutes ago and found this:

That’s for about 1pm local time; kickoff is at 5:42pm, so you can be sure it’ll probably be a bit colder, certainly dipping lower as the game progresses into the night. The temperature situation is serious enough t...

After being dormant for a while, I’ve decided to resurrect the barkada blog in order to kindle their interest in blogging. I’ve chosen to just get a free blog because I thought it may be easier for the newbies (two of us in the barkada are already blogging) to learn.
Please visit our barkada blog, Cyber Sabeerday! Don’t forget to read the history of our barkada! It’s still a tad bare, but eventually we’ll put some more improvements. (Source: Prudence and Madness)

Over at the Hart Empire Network (where I maintain a Battling Arthritis blog), the Battling Diabetes blog has recently been took over (from Hart) by a new writer: Julie E. Fletcher.

In her first post, Julie wrote:

My own personal experience with diabetes began when I was seven years old. My mother was thirty-two and had just been informed that she would need to take insulin shots to control her sugar levels. I remember watching her uncap her needles and asking her why she needed to take a shot. It was fascinating to a child that age to watch someone give themselves an injection.

I want to share my knowledge, offer insight for other caregivers, and inform you of innovations on the medical front against diabetes. I sincerely hope that you will join me in this battle against diabetes and ...

I've been surfing the web (i can't remember which website originally) and landed on new diabetes blogs that are really great, with more personal stories - which i regret not having found earlier.

First one is the blog named Your Diabetes May Vary and is a blog about the musings of a family with type 1 diabetes. This blog is written by Bennet, who I guess is the father and head of the family. I am telling you, definitely a good read!

Your Diabetes May Vary brings me to the second good find: Children with Diabetes Online Community - the online community for kids, families and adults with diabetes. I am pretty I blogged before about this online community. I just can't remember what and when.

Last but not least is another online community for parents of children with diabetes...

Here are a list of blogs I recently found which I highly recommend to be bookmarked and linked to by you, readers of this blog.

First of all, is the new CW blog under the Family and Home section: Next Nine Months. If you haven't found it yet is all about pregnancy, written by CW veteran blogger and a good old friend of mine, Ruth Schaffer.

Second is the newly re-launched pain management blog at b5media's Science and Health Channel: Help My Hurt. It's something that you and me should regularly visit, wonderfully written by its new author Marijke Durning, RN.

Third is my Battling Arthritis blog under the Hart-Empire-Network. You don't know yet that I am blogging about arthritis as well? Almost three months by now, go visit and please...do not forget to bookmark it or inc...

There is a call in number that will be available for you, the listener to call in and get a chance to participate.
Being a follower of the show and having been on the ‘air’ before as a caller, I can definitely say that participating in the chat room, available only just before the time of the broadcast (and lasting until sometime after) is just as fun as listening, like a running commentary while the show is going on.

This is the second time I have had the privilege of hosting, and for that I’d like to thank Dr. Nick Genes who has seen fit to give me the nod for this week’s edition and keeping the Grand Rounds tradition going. Without further delay, let us begin…
Prelude:
Thanksgiving is two days away in the USA. This will mark the 3rd Thanksgiving in a row that I am not home to spend with the rest of my family. Perhaps I’m just a little nostalgic for home right now, but I really wanted to incorporate the holiday here in a way besides references to turkey, pie, and football (Go Packers!).
www.mycareconnect.com was created by Pam Henry in order to monitor her daughter Sarah's diabetes while her child is in school.

Sarah Henry was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes five years ago.

Said Pam Henry:

"A child with diabetes might test themselves with a finger poke 10 times on any given day. They have to record the food (and) the insulin they give themselves.

It gives me peace of mind. I've got everything in one central location. I get a text message or e-mail every time activity happens when she's not with me."

My Care Connect is the website that provides instant monitoring and communication between a child's family, doctors and school nurses.

Just under 25 hours left to get your submissions in! I was getting worried when Friday I had probably only 12-15 entries. Let’s just say that the flood began early this morning…perhaps everyone was waiting to get off of work. Nevertheless, there’s always room, so get yours in!

I will be hosting Grand Rounds next Tuesday, November 20th! There is no theme for submissions, though I will hint that the fact that Thanksgiving (in the US) two days later might have something to do with the edition. Nevertheless, feel free to send me whatever it is you’d like to be included.
Some relevant info:

Send your submissions via email to enrico-[at]-mexicomedstudent.com with the subject “Grand Rounds” and the URL of the post for inclusion in body of the email, along with just a sentence or two of a summary. The summary helps when I look back through my mailbox and I can match the post in my mind with the URL.
Most importantly, all posts must reach me by Sunday, November 18th at 5:00pm CST (6:00pm EST). Sorry for the Sunday, but I’ll need a little extra t...

Hi everyone! It’s round two for being Grand Rounds host here at Mexico Medical Student next week. Wheee!
Because this week’s illustrious host, Dr. Anonymous, has pulled a fast one (and a very cool one, I might add) by unveiling GR 4:08 live on Internet radio the night before, my little submission guidelines post is a bit, um…behind because I participated in the radio broadcast. But I’ll replace this placeholder with the real content in the morning, I promise. Right now I’m need…sleeep…..
So, welcome Dr. Anonymous’ readers, and congrats to him for both hosting this week and breaking new ground w/Grand Rounds (no easy feat, given the incredible editions as of late) by incorporating LIVE RADIO. Awesome! Hasta mañana for a complete wrap up from...

I hope you guys enjoyed your weekend.

Meanwhile, check out the following interesting blog entries on diabetes from my favorite blogs...

From The Biotech Weblog:

In animal trials, a compound called m-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) which triggers serotonin receptors in the brain has been found to improve glucose tolerance and lower insulin levels in obese and diabetic mice.

The findings suggest a new strategy for treating type 2 diabetes via targeting the so-called serotonin 2C (5-HT2C) receptors.

From Diabetes Notes:

"You feed your kids rubbish - that's what most people think. It's ignorance and it's understandable, but it's quite hurtful. Having Type-1 diabetes has got nothing to do with diet. We don't have a family history of diabetes - there's no rhyme or ...

So after I type my last entry about lack of feedback, etc., I received an overwhelmingly positive response from you, my dear readers. As would be my luck, the day after posting it, feeling genuinely appreciative and inspired to be more consistent with writing, I got sick. And I mean sick.
I woke up with, uh, let’s be kind and say GI distress. No biggie, yet I hadn’t eaten anything out-of-the-ordinary, food from a different place, etc. Moreover, Claudia had no sx whatsoever, so I wasn’t concerned. By early afternoon, I knew something was amiss because I had been awake probably <1.5h since I woke up. Going back to sleep was such an involuntary response, I don’t even remember going back to bed from my room.
That’s when I noticed I was freezing. Anybody who kno...

It seems that all big and growing blog networks have a diabetes blog. While it is bad news that Weblogsinc's The Diabetes Blog has been recently retired, including all of the said network's life science blogs.

OR maybe it is good for the other blog networks because it is one less competition for traffic and an opportunity for growing blog networks to take up a diabetes blog? - such as the new Battling Diabetes blog from Hart-Empire-Network.

Anyways, I believe each and every diabetes blog has different approaches that most readers will find them all equally important as an online resource for diabetes.

I just started blogging for Hart-Empire-Network's Battling Arthritis blog, that's why I found out about Battling Diabetes

That’s how I feel about this site right now. Of the handful of regular readers I have, a small percentage actually comment. Both the comment % and total traffic here is steadily diminishing, and there’s no really good reason why. I don’t submit to Grand Rounds weekly like so many other bloggers do, because I actually have a personal standard that I maintain before I’d think someone else should feature my writing, but that’s another topic. Because of this, I don’t have that near-weekly resurgence in traffic and exposure that many other medbloggers take for granted.
Med blogs are popping up left and right, but there are also many that are dying on the vine, their authors obviously too ...

I just upgraded my blog to Wordpress 2.3 from 2.2.1 (yes, I skipped 2.2.2). I kinda like things not to be broken, so I don’t run the “bleeding edge” builds (betas, RCs, etc.) but I did start using Subversion to manage the source tree so that I could do updates way easier. I am a dyed-in-the-wool user of CVS (no, that’s not the pharmacy chain) and using Subversion took a lot less getting used to than I thought, certainly from a client-only POV. The main thing I’m looking forward to in this release is native tagging. Yes, I know there have been plugins to do this, but I am glad I procrastinated, because now it’s something I don’t have to worry about converting. (who says procrastination doesn’t pay?!)
So, if things don’t work for whatever...

I was refreshing my newsreader, and I started reading some blogs I usually don’t get to, but I also have found myself commenting on certain sites that I usually don’t comment on. I then realized there were quite a few sites that I read far more often but don’t comment on with the same frequency. All in all, I’ve been writing on others’ sites more than my own. That has to stop if I’m gonna keep a blog. I don’t have that much time!

From the Payperpost Blog:We now have data from over 40k bloggers and 8k advertisers to prove the naysayers wrong. The truth is that not only do people click on sponsored posts, on average they click through at a higher rate than any other media I am aware of. 10.545% average CTR to be exact (this is an average over all opportunities, obviously some will be much higher and some will be much lower). My experience in buying Google AdWords is to expect an average of somewhere between .5-1.5% CTR. Sure, I have had keyword campaigns that might have hit as high as 5% or 6% in extreme cases (like buying the keyword "payperpost"), but that is few and far between. I also know that a good campaign on MySpace might deliver a .05% CTR and that other campaigns I have run through Adbrite and similar media...

I’m late on this, but only because I wasn’t paying attention to my feeds and my WP trackbacks. Earlier in the week, Fat Doctor tagged me as being one of her “Schmoozer” awardees. I was shocked, actually, because to me, I am anything but a schmoozer (at least not when I think of the word)–I certainly don’t have that “salesman” type social personality, nor can I initiate small talk with ease. However, this is the description given in the previous link:
As it goes, schmoozing is the natural ability “to converse casually, especially in order to gain an advantage or make a social connection.” Good schmoozers effortlessly weave their way in and out of the blogosphere, leaving friendly trails and smiles, happily making new friends along ...

No, I don’t get a new Tag Heuer watch (I am partial to Movados, myself), but I have been tagged by Dr. Rob over at Musings of a Distractable Mind. So the meme is “8 Random Things” whereby I list 8 random things about me and tag 8 more people in chain-letter fashion.
So, in random order, here they be:

This is the first official “tag”/meme I’ve actually been asked to participate in. I feel like one of the “popular people” now.
A few days before Dr. Rob posted this, we got our local cable guy to disconnect us.
We have not had a functioning idiot box in the house for a week now!
Arunn and Lakshmi deserve a big thank you for inspiring us to do this.
I don’t know if it has been a change for the better.
I miss the morning news that I used to see while having my breakfast, but not much else. My wife is going to bed earlier than usual, not staying up to watch the infinitely rerun movie jokes and songs.
My daughter is definitely spending more time talking to us and playing with her one friend in the apartment block and her dolls. Yesterday when I reached home for lunch (late as usual, at around 3pm), the two of them had set up their kitchen sets in the corridor and were running an outdoor catering service.
As foretold in Revelations, the apocalypse draws nigh; two highly-read blogs have gone down. Although I did realize what was happening at the time, “Black Wednesday” was literally the day before I was preparing to leave back to Texas for my most recent trip (below) and had no time to comment on it. At the risk of being pointlessly late, I do want to offer a few comments and points of view.
Fat Doctor, a family practice physician, closed down her blog (although it seems to have the potential to spring anew) as did Flea, an anonymous pediatrician on the East coast. I read FD’s blog religiously, and I never once saw a post that was mean-spirited towards anyone. Sure, she’d go off on a rant about things that annoy her–which may have included a co-worker’s ac...

I primarily use ecto on my Mac(s) to compose blog entries. I’m not writing about the program (though it’s best strength IMO is its customizability when you want to get under-the-hood of the markup code) per se, but one thing that always surprises me when I fire it up, thinking of a new topic to post about, is the sheer amount of drafts waiting to be completed. There is an unmistakable, lopsided ratio of drafts:posts.
Part of the problem is that I get interrupted. A lot. With a 10-month-old, this should come as no surprise. Another problem, and perhaps more relevant, is that I’ll get all fired up about something, scribble down a good bit, but know it’s not polished for public posting. It’s definitely comprehensible, not just stream-of-consciousness babble, but...

Appropriately themed with Sir William Osler, this week’s Grand Rounds is hosted by Dr. Samuel Blackman at Blog, MD. My post being mentioned aside, I really love it when the host–as is with this week’s edition–comments a bit on the article and the author from their perspective. It’s nice to have a context before you go read the linked article, and the personalization of each link also speaks about the host as well as the given author.
