By Steve H. HankeThe public has finally started to give President Obama’s economic policies a big “thumbs down”. This shouldn’t surprise anyone who is familiar with the Misery Index.
While President Obama sings the glories of big government, it is ironic that he has been marked by the curse of government failure. One metric that measures how this curse will affect the President’s performance is the Misery Index (see the accompanying chart).

The Index is calculated by adding the difference between the average inflation rate over a president’s term and the average inflation rate during the last year of the previous president’s term; the difference between the average unemployment rate over a president’s term and the unemployment rate during the last month...

State Debt Doubles

By Chris EdwardsCNNMoney.com reports on how state governments are digging themselves deep into debt. The story points to Moody’s Investor Service data on “tax-supported” debt, which is bond debt that state taxpayers will ultimately have to pay back.
The article shows the large variations in government debt across the states, and notes that “not every state is ratcheting up its borrowing. Many states have strict laws governing their debt issuance. Some places, such as Nebraska and Wyoming, have virtually no debt.”
I’ve argued that all state governments ought to follow the no-debt approach to state finance. With good planning, capital expenditures can be financed “pay-as-you-go” or out of current revenues. Debt creates bad incentives fo...

In a remarkable vote on the Senate floor this afternoon, U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) made clear that despite rising federal deficits and a record national debt, she still stands firmly on the side of more wasteful Washington spending. Lincoln today helped defeat an amendment, offered by U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), to the annual transportation appropriations bill that would end taxpayer subsidies for the John Murtha Airport, a little used 650-acre facility in Johnstown, Pennsylvan...

It was not until physics class at college, that I started to understand physics formulas, because our professor gave practical examples from real life, i.e. he made me understand why the sky was blue.
From being the ultimate Bond poster girl to speaking up about osteoporosis, actress Ursula Andress has come a long way.
Ursula Andress
Ms Andress, born in Swizterland in 1936, was one of the major sexy women and actresses of her time. If you look at her now, you’d hardly believe she’s in her 70s. But, despite taking good care of her body and her physical beauty, time has ravaged her bones, resulting in osteoporosis.
As a result of her diagnosis with osteoporosis, Ms Andress agreed to become a spokesperson for the disease, teaching women about the importance of osteoporosis prevention and treatment.
To do this, she became involved in the “Timeless Women Campaign ,” an undertaking of the International Osteoporosis Foundation .
According to the website, Ms Andress says...

Well, one day last week it was 60 degrees here in New England, and then a few days later it’s snowing. It must be March.
And if it’s Friday, it must be time for another Friday Flashback while I’m attending the annual SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. Yes, I’ll eat some BBQ for you.

Detecting Deception
A decade ago, I wrote about the research to-date that demonstrated how lousy human beings are in detecting deception in others — to catch another person in a lie. “The conclusions from this research are obvious — trained professionals and untrained laypeople, in general, cannot tell when a person is lying.”
A decade later, our ability to detect deception has increased slightly and 4 years ago, we noted Paul Ekma...

The summer will be winding down soon and I am hoping to get back on track with posting.
There is an interesting paper from David Milstein (Weizmann Institute of Science) in the August 10th issue of Science describing the synthesis of amides from alcohols and amines. The method employs a special Ruthenium catalyst that effects the removal of two equivalents of H2, as shown below, in order to form the amide group. What makes this method attractive is that it requires only a small amount of catalyst, 0.1 mol%, and is stoichiometric for both the alcohol and amine starting materials. Nonetheless, it might be hampered by the fact that the catalyst must be handled under strictly controlled Argon-atmosperic conditions (Glove box) and so far has only been demonstrated on millimolar scale reacti...
