We’ve all had days where it seems as though nothing gets done. For those times when I seem to be spinning my wheels, I keep a list of things that I can do every day, even when I have no extra time, money, or energy to spare. I sometimes forget to write in my one-sentence journal and I don’t always make it to the gym, but I do try to make sure I hit all these items.
That way, even if I feel like I had a day when I got nothing accomplished, I can comfort myself, as I climb into my smooth, tidy bed, “Well, at least I went for a walk. I ate an apple. I hugged my daughters.”

Every day, I…
1. Make my bed.
2. Wear sunscreen (well, most days).
3. Wear my seat belt.
4. Jump up and down a few times.
5. Pick up one object that’s in the wrong place and put it away.
6. Go for a ten...

Punishment: A Cultural Phenomenon

We are a culture that believes in punishment. Not just for the criminal or the misbehaving child, but in almost every interaction we have, from our intimate partners to our global enemies and friends.
We don’t just see punishment as a deterrent. We think punishment works to change another’s behavior. Just look around. Take a closer look at how you approach a difficult conversation. We all do it. We use punishment all of the time. We don’t even think about it.
Punishment is a completely ineffective way to change anyone’s behavior.
Punishment simply breeds punishment-avoidance — and what we resist persists.

In spite of ongoing and frequent evidence to the contrary, Americans rely on punishment to effect positive change in all areas of our lives. From our child-rearing prac...

In an effort to spread the wealth - or perhaps the pain - Eli Lilly is now calculating employee bonuses based, in part, on the progress of its product pipeline. Specifically, the drugmaker added what it calls a “research metric” to measure “output and sustainability.” This includes product approvals and new molecular entities that enter Phase III clinical trials during the calendar year.
“Pipeline sustainability is measured by tracking each project’s progression toward its next milestone and by an evaluation of pipeline quality,” according to a filing late last week with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (see page 37). The changes also include measuring financial performance against company goals instead of the competition, and they went into e...

Here is it. The last day of August. When you think back to the last three months of summer, how do you feel?
Did you get to do everything you wanted to do? Read every book you wanted to read? Spend a few days relaxing and doing nothing too?
Sometimes we get sucked into this “I need to accomplish everything and be perfect” hole. And when we’re there, we don’t know how we winded up where we are or why we wanted to be there in the first place.
There’s a theme in this week’s top posts that have to do with perfectionism and also truth. I think we all strive to seek truth, what’s true for us and how to accept ourselves and be comfortable with who we are. Yet, there’s this crazy sense of push and pull between who we are (what’s true) and who w...

Why Limits On Banker Bonuses Are Meaningless

By Jeffrey A. MironThe European parliament has just approved a measure that would limit bonus payments and other aspects of compensation for bankers. National finance ministers are expected to approve the measure next week, and it will take effect Jan. 1. The goal of the legislation is to limit banker incentives to take risk, since this was allegedly a major cause of the recent financial crisis.
The key question about compensation limits is why shareholders and creditors have not imposed these on bank executives already. If the possibility of large bonuses indeed generates excessive risk-taking, then bank stakeholders have ample incentive to adopt such limits without government coercion.
The answer is that bank risk-taking was not necessarily excessive from the perspective of the bank s...

The weather conspired against us this week in North Carolina. A state that does usually see at least one major snowstorm a year, we still have no idea what to do when it actually happens. It snowed last Friday night through the day on Saturday and as a result, my university was closed on Monday, and had delayed openings on Tuesday and Wednesday due to daytime snow melt refreezing on the roads at night. Consequently, our counseling clinic was an absolute hive, with all 31 of us taking turns on the one clinic phone, trying to call our clients to reschedule canceled appointments. As if anticipation for seeing your first client isn’t bad enough — most of us had to wait a few extra days!
I, myself, had originally scheduled three clients for Monday. Luckily, it worked out that all three ...

For their work on acquiring and planning to integrate Wyeth, Pfizer cfo and senior vp Frank D’Amelio (pictured left) and Ian Read, senior vp and group president of the biopharma biz (pictured below), were awarded big prizes. The board gave D’Amelio $1.2 milllion and Read gets $1 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The awards have three components - half of the value was paid in cash on Oct. 26, 2009 and is subject to repayment if their employment is terminated for cause or either quits before Oct. 30, 2010. And 25 percent will be paid in the form of restricted stock units, or RSUs, to be granted on Oct. 30, 2009 based upon fair market value of Pfizer common stock on that date (further details are in the filing).

A recent New York Times article highlights to the growing nursing shortages around the world. Seems an understaffed Prague clinic has been offering liposuction, breast augmentation, and tummy tucks as incentives to get nurses to work there.
All they have to do is sign up for three years and they can have the plastic surgery of their choice - for free.
Interesting incentive plan. And apparently it’s working. According to the clinic manager, they are now fully staffed.
In fact, they had to reject dozens of applicants.
But it sounds more like providing a bandaid rather than a cure to the continuing nursing shortages.

The Wall Street Journal reports,
While Congress has been flaying companies for giving out bonuses while on the government dole, lawmakers have a longstanding tradition of rewarding their own employees with extra cash — also courtesy of taxpayers.
And at the very time that Congress was mishandling the financial crisis and trying to direct popular outrage at Wall Street, not Washington, the bonuses were getting bigger:
Capitol Hill bonuses in 2008 were among the highest in years, according to LegiStorm, an organization that tracks payroll data. The average House aide earned 17% more in the fourth quarter of the year, when the bonuses were paid, than in previous quarters, according to the data.
LegiStorm is a pretty scary website for congressional staff members and privacy advocates. It ma...

But when I saw a posting by Paul Land on the popular NextGen Yahoo Users Group, I knew I had to write something.
Turns out that FDA allows drug manufacturers to reuse NDCs, or National Drug Codes. This means if Potassium Chloride prescribed for me last week. it could now have the same NDC as Oxycodone HCL. Further, if my EHR record is using the NDC as the identifying key for medications, my medical record could suddenly change from Potassium Chloride to Oxycodone HCL. Even worse, now that Medicare is pushing e-prescribing, my refill request for Potassium Chloride could turn into a bottle of Oxycodone. That’d be a surprise!

It turns out that whoever said money can’t buy you happiness was wrong.
Money can buy you happiness, as long as you give some of the money away.
Dunn and colleagues (2008) conducted three studies that examined the relationship between Americans’ spending habits and their self-reported happiness. The first study was a national survey conducted on 632 Americans that asked to detail their income and spending habits. The participants were also asked to rate their general happiness level.
The researchers found that two things were correlated with greater general happiness levels — higher income (naturally) and spending on gifts for other people or money given to charity.
One could argue, well, hey, of course having more income can make you happy… But maybe it&#821...

The 11th edition of the ICP is now available at Living in the Bonus Round. Please visit, browse and leave feedback for the contributors and host. If you have a blog and can pass the word along to your readers, I would be grateful. As usual, I am still seeking hosts for editions post-August 2007 and participants for any edition. You do not have to have HIV/AIDS to show your support. For an example, be sure to check out Miss Money's entry. What a positive attitude for a beautiful soul and she contributed just to support us. Her voice is beautiful too...be sure to listen to some of her music.Categories: HIV AIDS HIV/AIDS blog carnival blog+carnival International+Carnival+Of+Pozitivities ICP Living+In+The+Bonus+Round (Source: 2sides2ron)
