We are, pretty much, in limbo. (If someone out there has a minute could you please just sort out the frankly insane English house buying won’t-dignify-it-by-calling-it-a-system? Ta.) Alan, Joy and I are living with my parents, a temporary situation that has now been going on for so long (we’re into the 5th week) that I’m starting to forget that we are meant to be buying a house. It’s an odd situation, and much to my parents’ credit, I think, that we are all managing pretty well, even though their home has been invaded by 3 extra people, 2 extra cats (and therefore a couple of extra on-the-way-to-dead-but-still-some-playtime-in-them mice) and all of the stuff that goes with us. Well, not all of the stuff. Most of it’s in store: but still, there are severa...

You may have noticed a certain drive-by quality to my blogging over the last few days.
Obviously, the family and I have been Very Busy buying a house, and doing everything that goes with it: driving up and down to Northumberland, seeing lots of houses, talking about houses, talking about how lovely our new house is, bursting into tears in our new bedroom in our new house because it feels so utterly just us(OK, that was just me), and all that.
But I’ve mainly been busy on the book. For the last 10 days or so I’ve been in the final throes of writing ‘Thinking, Laughing, Living, Dancing: how I said Bah! to cancer’ and it’s absorbing my attention in a pretty intense way. It’s not that I’m writing 24 hours a day: it’s more that because I’m ...

Book Reviewers Wanted

Do you like to read (especially self-help or other non-fiction books)?
Do you like to share your opinion with others?
Would you like to make a few dollars for sharing that opinion about a specific book?
If you answered yes, consider becoming a Psych Central book reviewer. All it takes is excellent writing skills (sorry, that’s a must), a penchant for reading, and the ability to read a book in a timely manner and synthesize it into a cohesive, helpful review.
If this sounds of interest, please check out our current book review list as well as our book review guidelines. If you ask for a book to review, we expect you to complete it within 3 weeks’ time (both reading the book and writing the book review). Book reviewers get to keep the book they are reviewing, and will receive a s...

Writing, Anyone…to Relate an Alzheimer’s Journey?

If you or your family members entertain thoughts of writing, either for pure fun, to write stories for school lessons, or to record your thoughts about Alzheimer’s caretaking, you might enjoy the series I’ve begun at One Book Two Book, Mary Emma’s Writing Tips. Although the weekly tips, prompts and activities are slated for young writers, they will work for anyone.
These will appear at One Book Two Book each Sunday. I also will suggest books and web sites where you can find help and inspiration, too.
I’ve often written about my journey through Alzheimer’s with my mom and aunt in hopes of giving others encouragement. Simply writing down your thoughts in a private journal often helps you cope with the frustrations of this time in your l...
