In the middle of January, like now, it is very easy to get into the mindset that this gray weather is going to last forever. Since I am a (very) amateur birder, though, I also know that the spring migration is about to start probably within the next couple of weeks.
The birds won’t hit our continent for a while, though. Entirely self -propelled animals. Actually, come to think of it, humans are the only animals that can travel in non-self-propelled ways. Still have respect, though, for flocks of millions of tiny birds propelling themselves across the Gulf of Mexico to summer in our back yards.
Renewed resolutions to haul myself around the thickets of Boulder Creek or up in the mountains near Nederland.

WiFi in Boulder is a wondrous thing. Not only is it omnipresent and often open, the networks’ names themselves are often amusing, or at least different. Just found a network at this sitting named The Nihilists.
Unfortunately, it is password protected. I may never know why it’s named what it is. I feel so pedestrian, merely being on the Kitchen Guests network.

The air is lighter and cleaner here. I feel healthy just walking down to my favorite coffee house.
Actually, my favorite coffee house here is one of about four different ones around here. Five, maybe. Everyone has a favorite.
The plains intersect with the mountains right here. I can drive for ten minutes into the Front Range and be a thousand feet higher than I am sitting here in our home.
Two environments — plains and mountains — and several different coffee houses.

I took a walk this evening across the street to our local park here in Boulder to walk off the nerves that have accumulated mysteriously since I had my port removed a couple of weeks ago. We have had sunny weather ever since our arrival; if it rains, the clouds pass quickly. The Front Range keeps any weather pattern from hanging around forever, as it is in Cincinnati.
I had forgotten that the Farmer’s Market would be open, but it was/is. I had also naively assumed that Farmer’s Markets are only open in the early part of the day. Fortunately, I was wrong: the booths were open and filled with freshly raised broccoli and salad greens and grass-fed beef. Hundreds of people were there at the height of dinner time, including many families with small children. Everyone was spread out ...

Again and again. I love traveling, but hate the suspension of normal reality while it occurs. But we are here, nevertheless, as you see by the last post of beautiful Boulder Creek at almost-flood stage.
If only I could get the dog and the cats here somehow, we would be all set and have little reason to go back to Cincinnati, especially that now you can get Graeter’s ice cream shipped anywhere. Hmm, I’m talking myself out of Cincinnati as I type.
Benefit of staying here forever: I never have to drive through Kansas again.

I was right this minute checking out what events there are to do today in and around the Boulder, Colorado, area. A theme has just occurred to me: notice with me, if you will, exactly what percentage of self-help seminars use the word “empower” when describing what it is that the seminar is about. Time to look this up in the Apple dictionary…
empower |emˈpou(-ə)r|verb [ trans. ]give (someone) the authority or power to do something : nobody was empowered to sign checks on her behalf.• enable (someone) to do (something) : cryptography will empower individuals to control their information.• [ trans. ] make (someone) stronger and more confident, esp. incontrolling their life and claiming their rights : movements to empower the poor.

I am blogging to you from a very rainy downtown Boulder. It should be sunny. Sunny is what I signed up for. Maybe a cloud or two when it snows. Not this chilly damp, which I thought that I left at home in Cincinnati.
However, here I am, trying another independent coffee house which offers free WiFi. There are many of these in Boulder, each full of people like me drinking lattés and staring intently at glowing screens. It being Boulder, most of the screens bear an Apple logo. Boulder is that sort of city, which is very fine by me.
Current coffee house is called The Cup. It is independent, as are Saxy’s and The Laughing Goat, both of which I also frequent. It is a bit frowned upon by the local intelligentsia to go to a chain coffee house. The work of one’s hands (which one assum...

It is the start of fall, and all changes in season bring changes everywhere. But not all changes are due to the seasons, I figure.
Our windows in Boulder look out upon the windows of the condos in another building, who have a good view of us. One learns about one’s neighbors, habits if not names. To my sadness, the Old Ladies With the Cats, who lived directly opposite us, are no longer there, and neither are the cats. Their place is now home to people roughly of the same age as my son. Sadness at the loss of two nice ladies, and two happy cats.
Also, they really have to keep the noise from the parties down. Whiny drunk girls sound even less attractive than even they think.
If the rain lets up, which I think it won’t, I’ll get out to see the ducks on the creek.

Here’s another GM issue that’s being close followed, and this time it’s a local (US) issue.
Six farmers from the Boulder County in Colorado asked asking permission to plant genetically modified sugar beets on open space land, which are areas of protected or conserved land on which development is indefinitely set aside. The farmers argue that they need to plant GM sugar beets in order to be competitive and stay in business. This year, 95 percent of all sugar beets grown in the US are Roundup Ready, which have been modified to resist the herbicide Roundup. Overspraying with herbicides usually kills both weeds and crops, but the biotech beets can be sprayed with Roundup to kill the weeds and the beets will stay unharmed.
After strong arguments from both sides, the Boulder County Food...

Even before I read Kate Dailey’s Newsweek post, “From Excess to Exercise: Group Helps Men and Women Live Sober Through Sweat,” I was a firm believer in group exercise as a way to treat addiction. For a variety of different reasons:

The bond and community element is much like those that form in 12-step groups,
The exercise itself has an antidepressant effect: the dopamine release can help to minimize the craving for alcohol and drugs,
A kind of discipline is learned that will benefit the recovery from addiction,
A sense of empowerment is achieved.

I relied on group exercise just as much as my meetings when I was newly sober. A few of us would take long bike rides on the weekends that helped me grieve the loss of my best friend (liquor). I look back with fondness on thos...

Supporters and opponents of GMO have been clamoring from a support from the Vatican, for the obvious reasons of elevating GMO into a moral issue.
Well, a study from the Vatican strongly endorses genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as providing “better food security” and safe and healthy foods, reports the National Catholic Reporter this week.
Although the Vatican itself has not issued an official statement, the Pontifical Academy for Science met this week to discuss the merits of GMO and participants unanimously agreed to endorse GMOs. Unfortunately, no Catholic critic of GMOs was invited to the conference so the endorsement has been viewed as totally biased.
In a related news, Boulder County Colorado farmers may now plant genetically modified sugar beets on government land, acco...

You might not have noticed it, but I have been writing furiously these past couple of days.
Well, I must admit that the reason you haven’t noticed this is that I have been doing the writing in an unusual manner. I have been using a pen (sometimes a pencil) to do the writing with, on actual sheets of paper. True, I’ve found many programs that one can use to keep a diary with on the laptop. Some of these were even specifically written for the purpose, with file encryption and everything.
But a friend of mine out in Boulder, whom I visited on our last trip, had said that she has been writing a lot too, and by hand. I came to agree with her, and for the same reasons. If one has one’s laptop with one at the coffee house, and if the coffee house has WiFi, as they mostly do nowa...

It turns out that we had way more than ten inches of snow yesterday and last night: we had sixteen. Even in Boulder, that calls for places to shut down and people to stay at home until paths can be made through the stuff. Still none of the common Cincinnati attitude of “We’re all gonna die!!!” Refreshing.
Today’s sunny weather has rapidly been processing the snow back into water, which is convenient, except for the puddles around the snow-blocked street drains. It’s good to have waterproof walking shoes. Come to think of it, I don’t believe that anyone in Boulder owns shoes inappropriate for this kind of weather situation. There were no sparkly strappy sandals out today, not even on the feet of young college men who love to wear shorts and tee shirts in ...

Today in Boulder, the city shut down for about ten inches of snowfall. Unlike in Cincinnati, people here do not immediately decide that they are going to die as a consequence. There was nobody running around in a frenzy, heading out to the nearest grocery store to buy several bags of flour that, on more sober consideration, they have no idea what to do with.
We ventured out in the afternoon. Most places were closed, including the local Starbuck’s. If Starbuck’s is closed, you know it’s bad. Places that were open: a shoe store, the Boulder Café, the Boulder Book Store, though that last one was closing early due to the snow.
They are plowing the snow off of the streets now. It is night after this day of snow. The crunching of the snow underneath the tractors sounds like fi...

Congratulations! We have made it to the first day of Spring! I feel that this is rather a day of liberation because winter seemed particularly insistent this year. Unpleasant weather, regardless of how long it lasts, always seems particularly insistent and intrusive. If I had any sense, I would move to Florida or Hawaii and have done with it.
As it is, I am sitting now in a place more famous for its winter weather than Cincinnati is: Boulder, Colorado. Yes, I can now witness the Flatirons of the Front Range thawing out in the sunshine.

Some ducks wandering around in Boulder Creek today.

In celebration of this event, I took a walk outside, and photographed some ducks on Boulder Creek. Here are a few of them climbing stones in the stream.

As always, arriving in Boulder feels the same as arriving at home. A dusty home with a few dead flies in it, but those things are easily fixed.
The ice rink is up across the street from our home, and the kids are constantly taking their parents out to skate. The closest ski resort is only 45 minutes away, and I am tempted to learn to ski.
Some people need the ocean. I need trees, and trees on mountains, like here, are a lovely extra bonus.
We went to Sushi Zanmai last night for dinner. They have a lovely Kobe Beef sushi that I dream about, it’s so good. That has to be the best sushi place here in Boulder.

We’re off to Boulder Colorado this morning, waiting for the flight to Denver to be called. It’s chillier there than here, but less moisture in the air. There is also a lot of sunshine, while in Cincinnati, we get doom and gloom now until almost March.
This is the last relaxing time that we will have before what I envision to be the Christmas rush. I have shopping to do, and I mean to do it. I mean to visit lots of friends, too. I may even take up skiing, but that has a probability that is very close to zero.

One thing that I have learned this past week, when I have been busy not posting to the blog, is that Boulder has to be the capital of sushi-making in the world. I think that we here have to have more sushi restaurants per capita than, say New York City.
Our current favorite sushi restaurant is Sushi Zanmai. We have been there for dinner the past two nights. They make a lovely Kobe beef sushi, and I must have eaten them out of their stock of Kobe beef. We sit at the sushi counter so we can keep an eye out on our food while it’s being made.
I also love this city because I’m believing this place is imbuing me with health. I look and feel healthier than I looked and felt before the cancer diagnosis. I figure that that’s a good thing no matter how you look at it.

If this is Tuesday, then I must be in Boulder, right? Right. The land of Yoga.
Last night, Buck and I went to what we thought was going to be a beginner yoga class. Well, it wasn’t a beginner’s class, but I did manage to last the whole way through it. Therefore, I am totally pleased with myself.
Even if it means sitting here with aching muscles — it’s a good ache. Therefore, today’s lesson is: when making a reservation in a yoga class, make sure that your definition of “beginner” matches that of the person signing you up for it.

I did not go for my nature outing today, but stayed in bed for what seemed a very long time, then went to the Kitchen for lunch. I read the whole entire of a mystery book today. I feel deeply pleased with myself for finishing a book, even after all those books I never got around to finishing. And here I am, finishing ordinary books. I don’t do Shakespeare any more, so it seems. That’s a pity.
I will miss this place until August, and I will still feel reluctant to leave the cats, even with their cat-sitter. I love having two houses, but I hate the transition between.

Visit the original article at http://www.white-pebble.net/?p=4128.This week in Boulder has been strangely productive for us. “Strangely” because usually we’re here for a vacation, and end up sitting around or taking all sorts of fitness classes (that’s Buck).
But no, we went to Denver yesterday to see it. The last time we went to Denver was when we were here with Peter, looking at schools. Today, we see a field of prairie dogs when Buck comes back from his run. Evidently, the babies are so unafraid that they come up to people to explore.

Visit the original article at http://www.white-pebble.net/?p=4123.Sometimes, it seems like I have two lives: one here in Boulder, one back in Cincinnati. I smoothy take up the reins of each as I arrive there. This is a very strange sort of double life.
But my memory has played tricks on me. I remembered to bring all of the camera’s cords and rechargers, just forgot the camera. I’ll rely on my trusty iPhone.
Last night, heading up the elevator, some people asked us if we’d had fun in our journey somewhere else. I was ready with an explanation, but Buck said we only really lived here part time. We’d live here more often if the animals were the transportable sort. Ask Barbara, I dare you, what happened when she tried to get our dog into her car...

(FYI: No Baby Dolls were harmed during the taking of this infant massage teacher graduation photo)Well here at Liddle Kidz we have been on a whirlwind since we left Los Angeles, and I know you’ve been asking for an update, so it goes. Here’s a little blow-by-blow of what we've been up too.Well we started off with a fantastic Certified Infant Massage Teacher Training in Los Angeles at ‘Creative Seeds’. What a welcoming creative space to host our group. And a wonderful group it was – turning out brand new infant massage teachers from all over Southern California & Arizona. After L.A., it was off to the bright lights of San Francisco. Here we were welcomed by ‘It’s Yoga Kids’ located right inside the Lombard Gates of the Presidio. If you haven’t been there, the Presidio i...

We had a flurry of activity early this morning, with a visit to the Kitchen, and toffee french toast for all. I managed to eat about half. Then we bopped around Target a bit, because I forgot to bring my underwear. We ended up buying a lot of food, too, and we just ate some lovely spaghetti with tomato and garlic sauce.
I’ve spent the rest of the day in sedentary fashion, and I feel like I am a disappointing host. Hostess. Tomorrow, the Dushanbe Tea House. I think that they have brunch there.
I wish I knew if this level of activity of mine is my “new normal.” And I wonder if it can be reset higher.
Now it is technically Sunday so this makes today’s date wron...

I have no idea of the added flavors do anything for it, but y’all know, you’ll be the first to find out, unless my neighbors here at the Laughing Goat here me cursing at a drink bottle.
Sunshine yet again today here in the People’s Republic of Boulder. (and my kombucha exploded on opening ) Too much energy to stay at home. Gonna get me some writing done! Besides blog writing, that is.

Visit the original article at http://www.white-pebble.net/?p=4042.Of course, I now realize that one very effective way of dealing with the frustration and claustrophobia that winter brings to us here in southwestern Ohio is escape. One tried and true escape in winter has always been to a warm place like Miami Beach, which was the traditional place of escape for my own family.
Ah, but there is indeed a second type of place to escape to: somewhere where they know how to do winter right. Some place like Boulder, Colorado. That is, in fact such a good idea that we will be there by late dinner time, tonight.
Yes, it does really matter just what place you veg out in. Location, location, location, etc.

Visit the original article at http://www.white-pebble.net/?p=3984.In Boulder here, there is right now very little overt talk of “global warming.” This probably has much to do with the piles of slush that dot the downtown areas. It is still so very easy to see the world only in our own very limited terms: if we are cold now, then global warming must be a long ways off yet.
I don’t think global warming is a long way off, but I also don’t trust most media further than I can control them.
All this is by way of saying that today was sunny and warm here in Boulder. Hats off to mother nature, et al.

Visit the original article at http://www.white-pebble.net/?p=3983.One thing that an outsider in Boulder has to notice is the actual human rights that pedestrians have. If you attempt to cross the street, the cars will actually stop for you, and wait patiently for you to cross.
This fascinates me to no end! In Cincinnati, it’s a bit dangerous to try crossing without the walk light being on. In Manhattan, of course, you’re considered fair game whether or not you have the walk light.
Upon thinking of all of the above for a few minutes, I have come to the realization that I could get used to the pedestrian lights here. In Cincinnati, I might actually walk out into the street without looking, next time I have a walk light.
